(Spirit Rock Meditation Center) A day before the Fourth of July and two days after Canada Day, commemorating establishing Canada, we explore the possibility of connecting the vision of individual awakening and freedom and the vision of social freedom and justice. We look at the "shadows" of these visions, of how greed, hatred, and delusion, whether individual or collective, as well as other factors, stand in the way of realizing these visions. We point to the importance of staying connected to these two visions in difficult and challenging times, and of how they can be brought together. After the talk, we have a group discussion.

The Fourth of July often brings thoughts of festive celebrations like parades, picnics and fireworks, but what does honoring the nation's independence mean? What are our rights, but also our responsibilities to a healthy democracy? How do you reflect on what freedom means, and what's the best way for us all to move forward as a united nation? We discuss historical and philosophical context on our democracy and what freedom requires of us all on this next Talk of Alaska.
It's been an amazing Season 4 here at Hidden Track. We've had visits with an astounding array of inspired artists, ranging from local heroes to global greats; from a reigning Polaris Prize winner to a newly minted Grammy Award winner; from hip-hop to hardcore punk to homespun folk. It's been such a wild 2023! So wild, in fact, that we felt the need to do a special episode to wrap up the season. Given the daunting task of summarizing such an incredible season, Grant decided to call in a little help! For this year-end episode, Grant Stovel is joined by Hidden Track producer Scott Zielsdorf to help share some great stories and songs from amongst this season's 21 episodes. In particular, this collection of magical moments zeroes in on the idea of connecting to something larger through music -- whether that's connecting with family and friends, with community, with humanity at large, connecting with your own inner sense of humanity, even connecting with your true artistic self. That yearning to connect is often the catalyst that compels musicians to create, to express, to be part of something. Music can be a vector for connection in amazing ways -- as we hear in this episode! With memorable stories and songs from the likes of William Prince, Tanika Charles, Arlo Maverick, Wendy McNeill, Dan Mangan, F*cked Up, Young Fathers, Aysanabee, Andy Shauf, Kid Koala & Leilani, Alex Cuba, and July Talk. Thank you for being with us in 2023! And we thank all of our guests for being so generous with their time and their hearts. All the best for 2024, and we can't wait to share Hidden Track Season 5 with you! Even a full blown pandemic can't stop the music....On this episode, we've got a song in our hearts as we track the story of a band that refused to let the global pandemic let them connect with their audiences. It's time for 'July Talk: Love Lives Here'.The COVID pandemic of 2020 forced everyone to hit the pause button and take stock of their lives, even if they didn't want to. That meant that a band like July Talk who built their fan-base and reputation through their high-energy shows had to postpone an upcoming tour....but that wasn't going to stop them. This film chronicles the journey of band members Leah Fay and Peter Dreimanis as they plan a one-of-a-kind drive-in theatre show in August 2020.This one isn't just for fans of the band, but it's a testament to the drive and the creative spirit to keep creating and keep developing revenue streams where ever and when ever you can. We talk with writer/director Brittany Farhat about how she got involved with the band, chronicling the show and so very much more....July Talk: Loves Lives Here is available on all VOD platforms now,

In this 1on1, we speak to Farhat about creating safe spaces, communication through cars and the legacy of July Talk.

I'll be real with you: I'm incredibly biased when it comes to today's guests. But hand-on-heart, I do feel like they're one of the best rock bands in the world and their latest album has only further solidified that thought. They're called July Talk, they hail from Toronto and they deeply care about the human condition. Specifically, how can the multitudes and nuances of the human experience be expressed in rock music? If that sounds objectively heady to you, don't worry, these humans love to have some fucking fun; with a relentless energy that's awe-inspiring. This episode is a talk about how anger, sadness, confusion, joy, and connection can beautifully inspire a group of people to pour themselves into art. This is the story of Remember Never Before by my friends, July Talk. You can catch July Talk live across the states this April, be sure to visit julytalk.com for full tour dates.
Formed in 2012 by Peter Dreimanis and Leah Fay, Toronto's July Talk has spent the last ten years building up an incredible following based on an energetic live show and three stellar albums that won them the Juno award for Best Alternative Album. They have just released their fourth studio album, Remember Never Before, on Six Shooter Records. They are about to hit the road on a massive tour that begins with two shows at the legendary Massey Hall before crossing Canada and forging into the US! The two of them wax poetically about Leslie Feist's 2017 album Pleasure, an album that Leah and Peter would agree is almost perfection!
On today's episode I interview Jill Zimmermann. She's an award winning audio engineer that's worked with Three Days Grace, Alexisonfire, City and Colour, Silverstein, Alice Cooper, July Talk, Protest The Hero, The Trews and The Standstills to name a few! Albums she's worked on have been nominated for 12 Juno awards, winning 2 of them. http://jillzimmermann.com/ If you prefer to watch the episode instead of listen to it, you can do so on Youtube at: https://youtu.be/7IP-EeDFo3M Leaving a like, a comment, a review or subscribing would really help the podcast to gain momentum and be a source of positive content for as many people as possible! For a dozen years and four albums now, July Talk has been relentlessly working toward a more just, humane, compassionate world, via the medium of their uniquely cathartic brand of groove-laden epic rock'n'roll. Juno Award-winning band July Talk is Ian Docherty on guitar, bass player Josh Warburton, and double drummers (double Dani/Dannys, in fact) Danny Miles and Dani Nash. And at the centre of the maelstrom are lead vocalists Leah Fay Goldstein and Peter Dreimanis. Leah and Peter are on a unique and fascinating creative journey together as artists. Each of them grew up steeped in vibrant artistic environments and, from early on, became passionate about pursuing music and visual art. Peter grew up here in Alberta. He's from the Edmonton neighourhood of Riverdale, an artistic enclave where Peter came up alongside a whole wave of young musicians who've since gone on to become internationally celebrated. Leah comes from a family of renowned Toronto artists; a family whose artistic environment, aesthetic and story continue to inform her own artistic pursuits. In fact, as we'll hear, it's a legacy that's been massively inspirational and influential for July Talk's work. We'll hear these two insightful, funny, amazingly candid artists share stories of their roots, how they came together over a decade ago, what people so often get wrong about the whole July Talk project, and the way their artistic dynamic (and their voices) have grown together in astounding ways on Remember Never Before, July Talk's brilliant fourth full-length album, released via their own label, Danuta, on January 20th, 2023.

On this episode, we explore the importance technology plays in business. The Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses' data shows fourteen percent of small firms say they are considering declaring bankruptcy or winding up their businesses. To break it down a bit better, the number of threatened businesses could be as high as 222,000, depending on how the coming months unfold, jeopardizing potentially, close to 3M jobs. There is no doubt that the pandemic has forever changed how we work and do business. We have become connoisseurs of technology and it is here to stay. This country is built on small businesses. Fun to be back in the Graventown Podcast command centre - and I was lucky enough to catch up with a singer songwriter who is literally always on the international road; Eamon McGrath. Eamon McGrath is a Canadian musician and writer from Edmonton, Alberta and is currently based in Toronto, Ontario. On his own, his raw live performances are most often folk-oriented, where McGrath plays songs from his deep catalogue on acoustic instruments, but with a band the live show takes on a much more high-energy, punk rock influenced vein. Having just seen him open for his pals July Talk a few weeks back, Eamon was very open and candid with me about some hard times he's been through recently and we got very deep about songwriting. Have a listen and do your best to stay kind at all times. Additionally she has played an important role as the engineer of 2 Gold Singles, a Gold Record and several Billboard #1 Hits while working with bands such as: Three Days Grace, Alice Cooper, City and Colour, Alexisonfire, July Talk, and The Trews. Having worked as a fulltime engineer made it possible to work with renowned Engineers and Producers: Bob Ezrin (Alice Cooper, Deep Purple, Kiss, Pink Floyd), Howard Benson (Daughtry, Santana, My Chemical Romance), Gavin Brown (Billy Talent, Barenaked Ladies, The Tea Party), Mike Plotnikoff (Three Days Grace, Hoobastank, BlessTheFall), Ian Davenport (July Talk, Wir Sind Helden) and David Bendeth (Paramore, Papa Roach, Breaking Benjamin).
As a teenager, Jason Dufour's musical purchases were informed not by the name on the front cover or the track listing on the back; instead, he looked to the liner notes. “I would walk into HMV and I knew the guys there,” he begins to recall. “I'd say, ‘I think this one dude worked on this CD, can I open it? I just want to see!' If I opened it and didn't see the name, I'm like, ‘I don't want to buy this!'” Two decades later, Jason Dufour is the name in the liner notes, wherever you may be reading them. A graduate of London's Ontario Institute of Audio Recording Technology (OIART), Dufour has gone on to have a hand in multiple Juno Award-winning and nominated records across a slew of genres, and is one of the Canada's most in-demand and well-rounded engineers today. His résumé is dotted with marquee names, including Lights, Three Days Grace, Tokyo Police Club, Donovan Woods, Protest the Hero, and The Tea Party, and is punctuated by a Juno victory of his own as 2017's Recording Engineer of the Year for his mixing work on July Talk's acclaimed LP Touch. Ever since he was in high school Jordan knew he wanted to be on tour and involved with the music industry. The common question “What are you doing next year?” Jordan replied with “I'm going on tour!”. One day he decided to build his own snare drum which then lead to building his own kit.; word got out and a few years later he created “YC Drum Company”. YC drum company has grown so much over the years that some of Canada's greatest bands (The Arkells, Glorious Sons, PUP, July Talk, USS, Blue Stones & so much more) use Jordan's YC drums. Oh and of course your host Melvin proudly uses YC drums. We talked baseball, touring stories, home made pizza and secrets used while in the recording studio. Follow YC Drums on Instagram and for more information on YC drums visit their website: www.ycdrumcompany.com To listen to the entire episode find us on your favourite podcast streaming service!
