Men's Soccer student-athlete Chris Nicola & Natalie Forbes, Senior Director of Student-Athlete Personal Development provide insight on the THRIVE student-athlete mental health program. Chris shares his experience being sidelined as a result of multiple injuries, the impact of isolation associated with injuries and COVID-19, and the positive impact his involvement with THRIVE had on his mental health. They both provide tips to help support student-athletes, including the Hokies Helping Hokies program that connects injured athletes and CAMP (Counseling and Athletics Mental Performance).
Brandon Flowers, two-time Virginia Tech All-American and NFL veteran, and former Hokie volleyball standout, Jaila Tolbert, discuss the Black Lives Matter movement and the role social justice plays in college and professional sports. Jaila will share her personal experiences standing up for social injustices by kneeling during the National Anthem her junior year on the volleyball team and Brandon will share what it was like seeing the "Colin Kapernick movement" happen in real-time as a member of the San Diego Chargers. They will also discuss resources to support black student-athletes.
