What did you think of this episode? Send me a text message and let me know!In this episode, I get to bring you a very special guest, someone whose work has transformed my whole practice, and who has been helping people heal their relationship with food and their bodies through intuitive eating for three decades! In this conversation, Intuitive Eating co-founder Evelyn Tribole shares why this compassionate, research-backed framework is more relevant than ever—especially during menopause. We explore how symptoms like sleep disruption can throw off hunger cues, why decades of dieting create a fear of "losing control," and how that fear is actually your body trying to protect you. Evelyn breaks down the biology behind these patterns and offers a deeply freeing perspective for anyone tired of blaming themselves. You'll also hear why intuitive eating works even with midlife health conditions, and how shifting from restriction to "nutrition by addition" can make food feel joyful again. OBS. Do you ever feel like you have an angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other shoulder, and both are constantly talking in your ear telling you what you “should” and “shouldn't” do with food? Even if you've never thought of it in the angel/devil sense before, there's a good chance that you have experienced some type of inner dialogue or food police that has a long list of rules about which foods are “healthy,” which foods are “junk,” and how you shouldn't eat past 8pm. (Cue the guilt when you break one of these rules.) In this episode we're going to talk about how to identify the voices that you're listening to with your eating, and how to connect with your True Self and your body's inner wisdom to tell you what you need. Make sure you stick around until the end because I have a really powerful journaling exercise that I want you to try that is going to help you figure out what your True Self sounds like, and how to let that voice be your guide. Episode Highlights -Identifying the voices of angel and devil on your shoulder, as well as your inner food police, and noticing how they keep you disconnected from your body -How to discover the wisdom of your True Self when it comes to your eating, which allows you to listen to your body, enjoy food without guilt, and honor your health. -A journaling exercise that will help you get clarity on what your True Self wants and needs, and how to silence your inner food police. In today's 200th episode, I pick up where we left off last week and clearly define and describe the remaining 8 principles of Intuitive Eating as outlined in the book Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Anti-Diet Approach, 4th edition, by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch. Last week I spent a lot of time on the first two principles in great detail as they lay the foundation for the remaining principles. There is a lot of great information in this book and as I have said, I like the theory of Intuitive Eating and for those who have not had a surgical procedure to treat their obesity and for people who don't have a complicated mess of a relationship with food … however few in number they may be… intuitive eating is a great way to have a healthy relationship with food! Listen in… take what you like – and leave the rest! Let's get started! Last week I had a fun discussion with Shea Quinn, the newest peer mentor for the full BariAftercare online program. Shea and I discussed intuitive eating and how this eating theory fits, or may not fit, persons who have had a surgical procedure to treat the disease of obesity. I got questions from listeners after the podcast dropped, asking what, exactly, intuitive eating means. Oops – apparently we forgot to clearly define intuitive eating! Because intuitive eating is a prominent topic for those who have been chronic dieters, I decided it would be a good idea to clearly define and describe the principles of Intuitive Eating as outlined in the book Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Anti-Diet Approach, 4th edition, by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch. In this episode I'll highlight the first two principles of Intuitive Eating described by the authors. This information is relevant to anyone who has hopped on and off the dieting bandwagon for years or maybe even decades! So share it with those you know who fit this description! Let's get started and next week, I'll review the remaining principles of intuitive eating.Resources:BariAfterare: www.bariaftercare.comConnie Stapleton PhD website: www.conniestapletonphd.comBariAftercare website: https://www.conniestapletonphd.com/bariaftercareBariAftercare Facebook page (for members only): https://www.facebook.com/groups/BariAftercareKevin Stephens: Your Bariatric Buddy https://www.facebook.com/groups/yourbariatricbuddy/peopleInstagram: @cale101 (Caleshia Haynes)Instagram: @therealbariboss (Tabitha Johnson)Instagram @drsusanmitchell (Dr. Susan Mitchell)Instagram: @lauraleepreston (Laura Preston)ProCare Vitamins (10% off with code ConnieStapleton)Shea Quinn: www.growwithsheaquinn.comTikTok (@growwithshea) Intuitive Eating, 4th Edition: A Revolutionary Anti-Diet Approach by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse ReschPlease subscribe to the show and rate it on Apple Podcasts, download free information at www.conniestapletonphd.com, and follow me on Twitter (@cstapletonphd), Instagram (@cstapletonphd), YouTube, LinkedIn, and on Facebook.

Get unstuck if you're feeling lost or confused with intuitive eating! Given that intuitive eating is an approach towards food that's much different from dieting because it doesn't include rules to follow, it's easy to feel like you're floundering like a fish out of water, or that you don't know what you do. Rather than winging it with food, I am going to show you how to regroup and refocus your energy on the things that are going to help you master the skills of intuitive eating like a seasoned pro. To do so, we are going to use Principle 6 of intuitive eating, “Discover the Satisfaction Factor,” as our North Star to help all of the other Principles fall into place. I'm also going to show you how having structure with food is going to HELP you eat more intuitively (and yes, this might sound counter-intuitive, but hear me out). I'll be teaching you how to approach eating intentionally each day, so that your body gets what it needs, and it doesn't become a free-for-all with food. Key Takeaways 1. Satisfaction as the “hub” of intuitive eating: Why you should focus on this if you're feeling lost or stuck 2. Importance of having a consistent eating schedule: This is going to help you tune into your hunger/fullness, and it's going to help your body know what to expect 3. The 3 questions to ask yourself before you eat: This is going to help you honor your cravings AND your nutritional needs Episode Highlights Focusing on Principle 6 of Intuitive Eating, “Discover the Satisfaction Factor” will help you implement all of the other principles with more clarity Just because you feel stuck or worried that intuitive eating won't work for you doesn't mean you should give up. What I would tell you in the very beginning so that you can implement intuitive eating the right way, without getting lost, stuck or way off base! This episode goes hand-in-hand with the next episode, #140: How to Refocus If You Feel Lost or Stuck With Intuitive Eating. You can think of these episodes like sisters or besties, so make sure you listen to that one next! Looking back, I wish someone would have told me a few things when I was first getting into intuitive eating and healing my own relationship with food. Even as a dietitian, there were things I didn't know and things I didn't realize in the very beginning. In this episode, we'll dig into Principle 3 of intuitive eating, which is called “Make Peace With Food,” you're going to see that having peace with food doesn't just mean eating whatever the heck you want, whenever you want it. If you've been trying to figure out how you can ditch dieting, embrace intuitive eating, and make peace with food, today's episode is exactly what you need to hear! I'm going to share the mindset shift that completely changed how I approach my eating, and it is something that has given tons of my clients their own “ah-ha” moments as well. Key Takeaways 1. Neutralizing your judgments about food: You can't truly have peace with food if you're still labeling it as good/bad or healthy/unhealthy 2. Intuitive eating vs impulsive eating: Eating “whatever you want, whenever you want” isn't going to get you where you want to be. 3. Peace with food means saying yes AND no to food: It's equally as important to let yourself eat what you desire, as well as being able to say no to food when you're not hungry or it doesn't meet your body's needs. Episode Highlights A deep dive into why Principle 3 of Intuitive Eating, “Make Peace With Food” is such a game changer. Saying “no” to food without it feeling restrictive Make sure you go listen to Episode 140 which pairs with this episode! If you've been consuming my content you hear me say this all the time. The KEY step to stopping binge eating and getting your period back without the pill is to let go of ALL food rules and give yourself unconditional permission to eat. What does this mean? Eating WHAT you want, WHEN you want, until you DON'T WANT ANYMORE. What's the purpose of giving unconditional permission to eat? To provide your body with the calories it needs to heal from under eating and overexercise To psychologically “habituate” to your fear foods so you can stop obsessing over them To release all fear and anxiety around food and learn to trust your body However, doing this is NOT easy. There are a lot of fears and struggles that come up when trying to eat freely after years of being governed by food rules and feeling out of control. In this episode I am troubleshooting these common struggles for you: ➡️ Binges getting worse ➡️ Telling the difference between binging and extreme hunger ➡️ Feeling sick to your stomach or extreme digestive issues ➡️ Feeling so distressed, guilty, upset, overwhelmed by how much and what you're eating ➡️ Feeling physically lethargic, bloated, depressed, bad body image ➡️ Eating so much “unhealthy food” and thinking “this can't be healthy” ➡️ Not feeling satisfied Let me know any feedback/questions by contacting me: Email is elena@elenakunicki.com DM me on Instagram at @elenakunickird Learn more about my 1:1 coaching, single sessions or my group program via this link: bit.ly/elenakwebsite Resources Referenced in this episode: Intuitive Eating by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch Food Habituation Research: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S003193842100202X Episode 175 Daily Meditation and Journaling Routine for Binge Eating & Period Recovery. In this episode of Embracing the Gray, hosts Vic and Kels delve into the concept of recommitting to your journey. They emphasize that recommitting does not mean resetting, but rather continuing with renewed focus and determination. After listening to the podcast, take time reflect on the following prompts: What specific goals did you set for yourself in 2024? Do your current actions and values still align with your 2024 goals? If yes, what reinforces this alignment? If no, what has changed? Identify something you want to recommit to. How can you break this recommitment into manageable daily actions? Imagine having successfully recommitted to your goal(s). How do you want to feel? Use phrasing like, "I am so glad that I feel..." to describe your emotions as if it has already happened. Today I'm talking to Ronni Robinson, eating disorder recovery coach, author, free-lance writer and public speaker. Ronni has 16 years recovered from 30 years of binge eating and compulsive eating, starting at the tender age of 9 years old. Ronni also experienced an 8-year abusive relationship whilst struggling with an eating disorder. She has written a book about the entire journey called, Out of the Pantry: A Disordered Eating Journey, which came out in 2020. The book's purpose is to help support her own recovery going forward, and to act as a helping hand to reach, as she calls it, back into the "fire" and to help pull others out. Ronni was on the podcast back in February 2023, telling her story and the journey she has been on to being a recovery coach today. Do go back and listen to this episode if you'd like to. There's lots of personal sharing about her journey and it's an inspiring story about what's possible in recovery. The link for that episode is in the show notes. Today, we're going to dive into what really helped Ronni in recovery. Ronni is going to talk about her process in recovering from binge eating and compulsive eating. She is going to share skills and strategies that will give you a deep insight into what is involved in healing a relationship with food and yourself. I hope that you enjoy the conversation. CW: Talk about eating disorders, bulimia, binge eating disorder, restricted eating, purgingI'm so glad to be back in front of the microphone with you all because I recorded so many episodes before going on an African vacation that I feel I haven't reached out in a very long time! It feels good to connect again. I had a wonderful trip and you'll hear a little more about it in this episode. My guest today is Helen Bennett. She's a certified health and addiction recovery coach who specializes in helping people break free from compulsive eating and is the founder of BulimiaFreedom.com. Helen and I have just an amazing, honest, beautiful conversation about disordered eating, sharing stories from both our journeys. Helen truly understands the guilt and shame feelings as well as the challenges that come with an eating disorder and how a peaceful relationship with food can be reclaimed. This is a tough subject, and triggering, so if this is a trigger for you please practice self-care as you listen.Helen shares her personal experience with bulimia, detailing how she started the cycle of binging and purging at the young age of eight and why. It led her to what she calls “a 20-year, nightmarish battle of being caught in this horrific cycle” between restriction, overeating, binge eating, and purging. She calls it an addiction quite deliberately. She eventually found things that helped her fight her way out of the cycle and now she uses her experience to help others get free as well. Helen and I talk about the intense shame and guilt eating disorders bring with them, how hearing somebody else be open about their struggle can be such a lifeline, and we share all the struggles we each experienced in our own journeys. Helen sheds light on exactly what drives disordered eating and what fuels the addiction. We talk about what tools helped her and why they worked. There's so much information, compassion, and understanding in this episode, it moved me and made me realize how useful open communication like this is so we stop feeling isolated in our struggles. I hope you find Helen's story and knowledge as beautiful as I did.__About Helen Bennett:Coach Helen Bennett specializes in helping men and women break free of compulsive overeating. Having secretly battled bulimia for two decades, Helen has first-hand experience of the guilt, shame and frustration that comes with feeling out of control with food. She also understands the unique challenges of reclaiming a peaceful relationship with food and offers practical (and often quirky!) tools to help individuals eliminate compulsion and find lasting food freedom.Helen is a certified Health Coach and Addiction Recovery Coach and is the founder of BulimiaFreedom.com__Resources mentioned in this episode:BulimiaFreedom.comSelf-Compassion with Dr. Kristin Neff“Intuitive Eating, 4th Edition: A Revolutionary Anti-Diet Approach” by Evelyn Tribole, MS RD and Elyse Resch, MS RD FADAGabby BernsteinTommy Rosen, Recovery 2.0__Learn more about Helen Bennett:Website: HelenBennett.coInstagramFacebookYouTubeTiktokLearn more about Dr. Michelle Tubman and Wayza Health:Website: www.wayzahealth.comFollow me on Facebook and Instagram

Anne Poirier, the inspiring certified intuitive eating counselor, and body confidence coach, joins us this week to unravel the threads of body image and intuitive eating, sharing her journey from personal struggles to empowering others. As we navigate through Anne's story, we shed light on the destructive grip of diet culture and the societal pressures that perpetuate the "thin ideal," while offering the promise of her Body Joyful revolution.Body image isn't just about what we see; it's deeply intertwined with how we value ourselves. The "good gift/bad gift" analogy Anne presents helps us understand that our perceptions have profound effects on our behavior and mental health. Our conversation takes a critical look at the messages we've inherited, from family to media, and ponders the potential for creating a ripple effect of body positivity for future generations. Anne also introduces us to the intuitive eating philosophy, crafted by Evelyn Tribole, as a liberating escape from the confines of traditional dieting.Wrapping up our thoughtful exchange, we engage in the heart of intuitive eating principles, emphasizing the significance of trusting our body's cues over the noise of external diet dogmas. Anne challenges us to rethink health and weight loss, encouraging a shift towards well-being rather than numbers on a scale. This episode isn't just an interview; it's a call to join a movement that's rewriting stories about our bodies and our meals, led by a voice as influential as Anne's. Evelyn Tribole is a renowned and award-winning dietitian who is one of the two “founding mothers” (as Vic likes to say!) of Intuitive Eating. She has been featured on Good Morning America and is a best-selling author of 10 different books on Intuitive Eating (IE), which is an evidence-based, compassionate, self-care eating framework, rooted in dignity and respect for all bodies. Evelyn is one of the main reasons why IE has grown and evolved into an important cultural movement over the last 30 years. The holidays can be a very overwhelming time when it comes to Intuitive Eating, body image and self-acceptance, and this is the perfect episode to help you manage whatever comes your way! In this episode, Victoria and Evelyn talk about how mesmerizing and tempting diet culture is, how to pursue intuitive eating EVEN IF you're still not happy with your body, how to talk about food or respond to comments at Thanksgiving, and share so many helpful tips and mental frameworks that will give you the confidence you need to find peace with food!Website: evelyntribole.comRead: Intuitive Eating Workbook: Ten Principles for Nourishing a Healthy Relationship with FoodWork with a Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor: intuitiveeating.orgSponsored by:Vionic: Use code REALPOD15 at checkout for 15% off your entire order at www.vionicshoes.com when you login to your account. 1 time use onlyOak Essentials: Get 15% off @OakEssentials with the code REALPOD at oakessentials.com. #oakessentialspartnerLMNT: DrinkLMNT.com/REALPODAG1: DrinkAG1.com/realpodCozy Earth: Head to cozyearth.com and get up to 40% off sitewide when you use the code “REALPOD”Produced by Dear MediaThis episode may contain paid endorsements and advertisements for products and services. Hey Rebels! Today we are talking with one of THE co-authors of intuitive eating so you can understand it deeper than the over-simplified definition of "just eat when you're hungry, stop when you're full"... How can someone just listen to their body? How can someone just eat intuitively? How can someone just eat whatever they want? To start, Intuitive Eating is not just a hunger/fullness diet and after today's episode you will understand why. Intuitive Eating was first published in 1995 by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch. In 2020, they published the 4th edition. Evelyn explains what changed have been made and why they are important in this episode, as well as taking us through how the principles of Intuitive Eating even came to fruition back in the 90s. I know you're going to get so much value from this conversation, and it might just clear up some uncertainties you had about intuitive eating. ______ Check out Evelyn Tribole: Instagram: @evelyntribole Intuitive Eating Website _______ Connect with Bonnie on Instagram: @diet.culture.rebel Looking to take the next step in becoming a Diet Culture Rebel?
