In our second and last holiday mini-episode of the season, we wonder how a sore-armed Yankees pitcher went on a crash diet, then turn to Kid Gleason, manager of the 1919 Chicago White Sox, for a little lesson resilience. Featuring a baserunning tale that isn't true, but it ought to be.(Drum Roll Please.wav by Scheffler) The Infinite Inning is a journey to the past to understand the present using baseball as our time machine. America's brighter mirror, baseball reflects, anticipates, and even mocks the stories we tell ourselves about our world today. Baseball Prospectus's Steven Goldman shares his obsessions: history from inside and outside of the game, politics, stats, and Casey Stengel quotations. Along the way, we'll try to solve the puzzle that is the Infinite Inning: How do you find the joy in life when you can't get anybody out?
On this Make A Difference Minute, we highlight Rocket City Adapted Athletics and a milestone moment for the Rocket City Rockets. Most people chase performance by training the mind and pushing the body. Dr. Jerry Lynch has spent decades proving that's only part of the equation. Because when pressure hits—when fear shows up, when doubt gets loud, when the moment gets heavy—mindset won't carry you if your inner foundation is empty. What separates the best isn't just mental toughness. It's what champions can access when the stakes are real: meaning, courage, connection, and the soul behind the performance. In his fifth appearance on The Athletics of Business Podcast, Jerry joins Ed Molitor to explore what truly sustains excellence in sport, leadership, and life. Anchored in Jerry's 20th book, Unlocking the Champion's Soul, the conversation reframes performance as something rooted not just in the mind or body—but in the soul. Together, Ed and Jerry unpack defining moments, championship environments, and the inner work required to lead and compete with purpose—from fear versus love, to relationships as the ultimate performance multiplier. If you coach, lead teams, work with people, or are committed to becoming a better version of yourself, this episode offers a powerful shift in perspective. Meet Our Guest: Dr. Jerry Lynch Dr. Jerry Lynch is a performance coach, author, and PhD in psychology who has spent decades helping athletes, coaches, and leaders access what he calls the champion's soul—the inner foundation that drives how we show up when it matters most. Jerry has supported more than 130 championship teams across professional and collegiate sport, and his work is known for going beyond traditional sports psychology. While mindset and mental skills matter, Jerry's approach centers on something deeper: meaning, purpose, courage, love, and the lived values that shape performance under pressure. His perspective was forged early—not just in locker rooms, but through years as a runner in Colorado, where long mountain runs became a training ground for philosophy, self-awareness, and the kind of inner work that competitors often avoid until life forces it. Jerry is also the author of 20 books, including Unlocking the Champion's Soul, which brings together his lifetime of coaching, research, and lived experience into a practical path for anyone committed to becoming their best—on the field, in business, and in life. What You'll Learn in this Episode: Why performance starts with belonging, not pressure Why relationships are "the business of the soul." How sport builds "spiritual shape," not just physical shape Why "feelings equal function" in leadership, coaching, and culture How to create a safe environment where people feel free to fail and grow How sport accelerates self-discovery and reveals who we are under pressure How fear and love shape decision-making, performance, and relationships The RIVER Effect: the five feelings every person craves in a team culture Resources & Links Dr. Jerry Lynch Website: www.wayofchampions.com Jerry's LinkedIn Grab your copy of Unlocking the Champion's Soul More of Jerry's Books Listen to more of Dr. Lynch on The Athletics of Business Podcast: Episode 203: Lead with Love Episode 195: The Champion Sports Parent ft. @1QLeadership Question: What exactly is the problem in college athletics? Sean Frazier, VP of Athletics and Recreation at NIU, discusses how and why the Huskies is restructured its conference affiliations, and also explores how new financial models can help sustain athletics without burdening the institution. Frazier explains NIU's strategy to "decouple" football from its traditional all-sports conference, moving football to the Mountain West, Olympic sports to the Horizon League, and wrestling to the Pac-12 to reduce travel costs, increase media revenue, and better align regionally while maintaining academic and athletic standards He describes the financial and strategic logic behind this model, including regional scheduling savings, expanded media markets, and using new conference affiliations to enhance both the university's athletic profile and potential academic and research partnerships The discussion also explores private capital and private equity in college sports, distinguishing capital from equity, examining venture-capital-style investment, and emphasizing the need for entrepreneurial thinking and stronger governance to address new expenses like revenue sharing and NIL without compromising core academic values A frequent guest on 1Q, Frazier has always thought strategically, and creatively, about the intercollegiate athletics community and how to position all involved for success. - One Question Leadership Podcast - Tai M. Episode 126 of Tablesetters breaks down a stretch of offseason moves that didn't rely on shock value, but clearly revealed how several teams are positioning themselves for 2026. We open with Tatsuya Imai nearing the end of his MLB posting window with a January 2 deadline and, by his own admission, far less clarity than expected. Despite an elite résumé in Japan and interest from multiple clubs, firm offers have yet to materialize. We examine why interest hasn't translated into action, which teams remain involved, the importance of family and contract structure in his decision, and what it means if Imai ultimately returns to Seibu. From there, we move to Baltimore, where the Orioles re-sign Zach Eflin on a one-year deal. We break down what Eflin realistically provides coming off an injury-filled season, where he fits alongside Kyle Bradish, Trevor Rogers, and Shane Baz, and why this move stabilizes the rotation without removing the Orioles from the frontline starter market. The Athletics make their clearest long-term statement by locking up Tyler Soderstrom. We dig into how his extension reshapes the lineup, why his move to left field mattered after Nick Kurtz's arrival, and how a core featuring Soderstrom, Brent Rooker, Lawrence Butler, Shea Langeliers, Jacob Wilson, and Jeff McNeil gives the A's one of the deeper young offenses in the league as they build toward Las Vegas. Cincinnati's pivot away from the Luis Robert trade market brings the bullpen into focus. We break down the additions of JJ Bleday and Dane Myers, the pitching depth lost along the way, and why the Reds' roster decisions align with Nick Krall's stated priority of fixing a relief group that quietly became one of the team's biggest concerns. We close the Meat of the Order in Pittsburgh, where the Pirates sign Ryan O'Hearn to the largest free-agent position-player deal in franchise history. We discuss why O'Hearn fits PNC Park, how he complements Spencer Horwitz and Brandon Lowe, and why Pittsburgh's recent aggression has created legitimate momentum — including growing buzz around Kazuma Okamoto. Steve and Devin connect the dots across international markets, roster math, and team-building philosophy, focusing less on headlines and more on what these moves tell us about how clubs believe games will be won next season. ⚾️ Deadlines approaching, cores taking shape, and priorities becoming clear.

Warm, revealing and long overdue, this episode of "Mizzou Storytellers" shines a spotlight on one of the most influential people in Mizzou Athletics you don't see on the sidelines. Hosted by Loretta Jones, Dave Matter, and “Producer Steve" Sowers, the conversation with Sandy Matthew pulls back the curtain on two decades of leadership, loyalty and behind-the-scenes excellence. As the Senior Executive Administrative Assistant to the Director of Athletics, Sandy has served five athletic directors over 19 years, quietly becoming a constant through eras of change. In this episode, she shares how her journey to Mizzou began, what it really takes to support an athletics director at the highest level, and how college athletics—and her role within it—has evolved. Listeners gain a rare look at the operational heartbeat of the department, from navigating high-pressure game days to building trust across every sport and staff unit. The episode is equally personal. Sandy reflects on her Oklahoma roots, her recent adventure in Italy, life at home with her mom Ruth and dog Piper, and what Mizzou truly means to her. She's a gatekeeper, a trusted advisor and a steady presence through it all. More than anything, this episode makes clear why Sandy Matthew is considered the heart and soul of Mizzou Athletics — and why her story was one that needs to be told.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Aside from "The Babe," there's probably no more recognizable nickname in baseball than "Catfish." But Jim Hunter proved easy to catch and hard to keep for Athletics owner Charlie Finley 51 years ago this week, when Finley's negligence led to an arbitration decision that freed Hunter from his contract with Oakland. As baseball's first modern free agent, Hunter served as an excellent test case for ballplayers who were eager to see what their prices were on the open market, and the answer to that was: a lot! Mike and Bill look back at Hunter's career and the mistake that was an important mile marker on the road to the modern free agent era. Plus, happy birthday to John Anderson and Adolfo Phillips! And farewell to Carlos Lezcano, Terry Ley, Brian Dayett and Jim Marshall.

Welcome back to the Hangin' with the AD PodcastThis is a special episode for us, because we're joined once again by a familiar voice and a great friend of the show—Steve “Throney” Throne. Each year, we're fortunate to sit down with the current President of the NIAAA, and this annual conversation has become one of our favorite traditions. In 2025, that role belongs to Steve Throne, and today we're excited to reflect on his year of service, leadership, and vision for athletic administrators across the country.
