This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit www.splitzoneduo.comVirginia Tech has an incredible fanbase and a history, in this century, as one of the best programs in the country. But those things only count for so much, and the Hokies are now facing an existential moment: Catch up in the financial arms race, or fade further from relevance. In this episode, Alex and Richard discuss:* Why Brent Pry failed* Why the concept of “fit” in this job is extremely hard to figure out, unless you are literally Frank Beamer's son. (And in that case, you have a conventionally better job.) * Tech's place in the ACC and why TV viewership is everything* The bells and whistles the Hokies have lacked* The questions any candidate will want answered* How much does an amazing game day atmosphere still matter?* “I do not think Michael Vick is going to get this job”* Verdict time: Good job, bad job, or circumstantial?Producer: Anthony Vito

The Monarchs came into Blacksburg and smoked the Hokies in an embarrassing low point for a once great program. While the program officially died last week against Vandy the Pry regime came to an end Saturday, a regime bookended by unexpected losses to the Monarchs. This week we close the Brent Pry era and start looking towards the future and whether the BOV and hiring committee can find a Lazarus Pit to bring this program back to life.

Hokies Talk on the show next as we are joined by special guest Brian to talk about our favorite head coaching options for Virginia Tech this year.
Three weeks into the college football season and there have already been two head coaches fired. UCLA's DeShaun Foster and Virginia Tech's Brent Pry are out. Neither coach had won a game this season. Andy Staples, Ross Dellenger and Steven Godfrey talk about where the Bruins and Hokies go from here in their search for a new leader. They also discuss who may be next on the chopping block. After struggling to begin the season, Florida's Billy Napier, Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy and Wisconsin's Luke Fickell are names to keep an eye on. Can these coaches turn it around and cool off the hot seat like some other coaches have done this year?Later in the show, the guys chat about a new trend in college football for how to revamp a struggling offense. The new philosophy is to bring over another school's offensive coordinator and his quarterback. Two successful examples of this, so far this season, are Oklahoma's OC Ben Arbuckle and QB John Mateer and Utah's OC Jason Beck and QB Devon Dampier. Andy, Ross and Steven discuss why this new trend is proving to be successful and if they think this will grow to be the norm. The 16th-ranked Utes have a big test this weekend as they host 17th-ranked Texas Tech. It will be a clash of offseason philosophies, as the Red Raiders focused on investing heavily in NIL to improve their team. Finally, the guys chat about why the ACC has everybody talking. This year they've rolled out a new level of transparency as they have decided to let you behind the curtain during replay reviews. This new level of insight has excited and intrigued many people in the college football landscape. Andy, Ross and Steven give their thoughts and discuss whether this could lead to even larger levels of access for the viewer in the future. All of this and more on today's College Football Enquirer.(1:39) - DeShaun Foster and Brent Pry fired(15:44) - Who may be the next head coach to go?(33:02) - The new OC/QB package deal philosophy (49:25) - ACC's new replay transparency on broadcasts Subscribe to the College Football Enquirer on your favorite podcast app:

Sam is back this week to help Pete break down Week 2 across college football. It was a weekend full of upsets - including a pantsing of the slightly favored Hokies in Blacksburg.
Vanderbilt and South Carolina kick off at 6:45 Central in Columbia, S.C., on Saturday night in a game shown on the SEC Network. Southeastern 16's Chris Lee and Brian Edwards make picks. Topics include: Vanderbilt's Diego Pavia has been the SEC's best quarterback, statistically-speaking, so far. The Commodores' offensive and defensive lines manhandled Virginia Tech in the second half last week, when Vandy scored the game's final 34 points in a 44-20 drubbing of the Hokies. South Carolina faced the same Virginia Tech team the week before and also won. The Gamecocks got a punt return touchdown in that one from Vicari Swain and then two more from Swain (one off a blocked punt) in last weekend's win over South Carolina State in a game that started late due to weather-related issues. Vanderbilt and SEC defensive player of the week Nick Rinaldi mounted a good pass rush last week, and the Gamecocks have struggled with pass protection. The Commodores lead the SEC in total defense, while the Gamecocks are last in total offense. However, South Carolina still has tons of talent; an offense led by La'Norris Sellers and Nyck Harbor seems due to play better while a running-back tandem of Oscar Adaway and Rashul Faison is a good one. The Gamecocks have dominated the series, winning 28-7 last season for their 16th-straight win over Vanderbilt. In this episode, Pete and Sam recap what they saw down in Atlanta as the Hokies fell to the Gamecocks 24-11. Along with multiple reasons for optimism, there was cause for concern as well. If the Hokies defense comes to play like they did on Sunday, VT could win a lot of games this year, but the offense is going to have to score some touchdowns. Up next is Diego Pavia and the Vanderbilt Commodores. They're coming to Blacksburg for a Saturday night tilt that will be a defining game for Coach Pry, win or lose. Let's hope the boys can regroup quickly and win a HUGE home opener.
