E80: Weeding Out The Myths Of Cannabis & Making Room For CBD In The NFL with Cottreezy

Good Dudes Grow

Ever been told that professional sports and cannabis don't mix? Stigmas are hard to break, but CBD may well be a better way to manage physical and mental stress for competitive athletes than traditional treatments--and may even be on its way to more widespread acceptance in the NFL, thanks to advocates like Cottreezy.  Cottreezy was born into a football family with a father and uncle who both broke barriers as Black athletes in the NFL. He played for the Minnesota Vikings, the Frankfurt Galaxy/ RHEIN Fire, and the San Diego Chargers. Over the course of a physically-demanding career, Cottreezy's experiences managing injury drew him to explore the benefits of CBD for athletes. Today, he's an expert on cultivating cannabis and is focused on educating people about its benefits and writing and releasing his own music.  On this episode of Good Dudes Grow, Cottreezy and Gary break down the stigma around cannabis to reframe the way we think about sports medicine and athletes' well-being. They discuss how CBD can support health and promote productivity on the field and in other workplaces, and how Cottreezy is leading conversations that he hopes will bring policy reform and culture change to the NFL, and help athletes in every sport thrive. Listen in for an episode that will debunk everything you thought you knew about cannabis in professional sports.    What You'll Learn: How CBD can support athletes (and anyone) with pain reduction, injury recovery, PTSD, and anxiety--without clouding your mind  Why the NFL's double standards for substance use (think opiate prescriptions and alcohol sponsorships alongside the league's strict bans on cannabis use)--do more harm than good  What Cottreezy is up to today--from his work uniting Black and indigenous cannabis growers to protect the planet, to standing on the frontlines of the BLM movement and indigenous community issues, to releasing new music in 2021 (and why his forthcoming LP is worth the wait)  And much more!   Favorite Quote: “The stigma of [cannabis use] that people have to understand [...] is that the CBD aspect of it is 100% what you would need [in high pressure situations] because it doesn't relax you. It keeps you sharper. Hell, it even clears you out. The first time I had really good CBD [...] my eyes lifted up. [...] It literally cleared me off. [...] It made me feel like ‘I'm back.'”   Connect with Cottreezy:  Instagram  Instagram #2    How to get involved:  Gary Roberts, the host of the Good Dudes Grow podcast, is the founder and CEO of Pure Body Zen, a company based not only around creating and selling high-quality CBD products, but one that is on a mission to change the landscape on how mental health and addiction are treated. Miami Dolphins Tales From The Deep Cleo Lemon's unlikely odyssey from camp casualty to South Florida hero culminated when he forever etched his name on the hearts of Miami fans with a game-winning, overtime TD pass to Greg Camarillo, lifting the Dolphins to their first and only win of the 2007 season. Despite a prolific career at Arkansas State, the Greenwood, Mississippi native went undrafted in 2001 and spent two years out of football before finally landing with the San Diego Chargers. Three seasons in San Diego came to a halt in 2005 when Lemon was traded to Nick Saban's Miami squad, where he would enjoy the most significant playing time of his NFL career. In The Tank, Cleo reflects upon his childhood in Greenwood (7:49) and the circumstances that led him to don a Red Wolves jersey (12:44). He then candidly details an incredible two-year journey that would have forced many out of football (15:26) and included stops in the AF2 League (21:54) and a University of Memphis Pro Day before finally landing a workout with the Chargers (22:48). Cleo goes on to share details on a Bolts quarterbacks room featuring Drew Brees, Doug Flutie, and Phillip Rivers (26:27) and makes the team after figuring out in the fourth-team huddle that an undrafted rookie basketball player turned tight end named Antonio Gates should see the ball often (27:32). Lemon discusses his unique connection to Cam Cameron and where things went south for Miami in 2007 (29:14) and opens up about the responsibilities and challenges for Dolphins quarterbacks since Dan Marino retired (35:19). Of course, Cleo recalls that fabled touchdown toss against the Baltimore Ravens to “save” the 2007 season (37:54), explains his transition from playing, to coaching, to the corporate sector (45:24), and steps to the line and executes the perfect Fish Tank Two-Minute Drill (50:19). I wrote a couple dispatches and met some interesting people, including former NFL linebacker Donnie Edwards, who played for the Kansas City Chiefs and, at the time, the San Diego Chargers. He now runs Best Defense Foundation where he brings World War II veterans back to their battlefields. Donnie introduced me to Neal. At the time, I was only privy to Neal's background as a US Marine having served during the Battle of Okinawa during World War II. But after speaking with him on numerous occasions, I later learned Neal had accomplished far more than I initially perceived. After World War II, Neal became one of the very first Sky Marshalls in the 1970s in an effort to combat the growing problem of plane hijackings so he helped enforce new anti-piracy laws. We also briefly cover Neal's 20 years as a criminal investigator for US Customs — you can read about his big cases (which, a link will be in the description) as well as Neal's government work with the US State Department in the 80s in Russia. “Never rob a man of his pain or his gold because both will serve him equally well.”Super Bowl champion Aaron Taylor reflects on a journey to emotional freedom that continues far beyond his accomplished career in the NFL. For every feeling he'd been pushing away, Aaron came to find that “on the other side is infinite possibility.”Join Aaron, Brett, and Joe as they talk about performance anxiety, feelings in the locker room, and how faith affects decision-making. They touch on the nature of accomplishment, how to raise children who hear their own voices of approval, and the value of having our identity shattered to pieces. Aaron shares a tearful moment with his absent father that produced an unexpected gem of gratitude. The episode closes with the story of a critical choice Aaron made at age 15 that changed his life.“At the end of the day it doesn't matter what we do, it's about who and what we become in that process.”Links and references from the episode:Mentalhealthbestpractices.comCheck back in 16 years for a follow-up interview with feedback from Aaron on the referenced conversation with his son.About Aaron:CBS Sports Analyst and College Football Hall of Fame inductee, Aaron Taylor, has a "larger than life" personality, but its roots may surprise you: the former Super Bowl Champion credits his success to the principles of Gratitude, Service, and Teamwork.Instilled from an early age, these principles became the inspiring foundation for the creation of college football's only non-individual award, the Joe Moore Award, annually recognizing the Most Outstanding Offensive Line Unit in College Football. Through the Joe Moore Award, Aaron set out to not only preserve the legacy of his coach but also to shift the focus from a “Hey, look at me!” mentality to a culture of teamwork, of putting the greater good above ourselves in society at large.Aaron was a decorated offensive lineman at the University of Notre Dame from 1990-1993, earning unanimous All-American honors both his junior and senior years. In his final season in South Bend, he won the prestigious Lombardi Award, annually given to the best interior lineman in the country. In an incredible culmination of his childhood dream, Aaron was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the first round of the 1994 NFL Draft and was a member of the Packers' Super Bowl XXXI championship team. After a two-year stint with the San Diego Chargers, Aaron was forced to retire due to injuries after the 1999 season.Off the field, Aaron is a moving and inspirational speaker. His candid approach and sense of humor make him an effective storyteller who is able to weave a powerful message of resilience, perseverance, and the importance of having a championship mindset. Behind the winning smile and accolades, Aaron finds meaning and feels “most alive” when being of service or bringing value to others. Shortly after retiring from the NFL, Aaron established the Aaron Taylor Impact Fund and recently co-founded The Foundation for Teamwork, dedicated to fostering the most essential aspect of all societal endeavors: Teamwork.Aaron currently resides in Southern California and New York with his wife and three children.

Legendary sports radio and NFL play-by-play icon, Lee “Hacksaw” Hamilton joined for a wide conversation about his career, the San Diego sports media market, the San Diego Chargers and more. Hacksaw and the History of Sports Talk Radio Lee shared his Long Island roots and the start of his radio news/DJ career in his college days on a radio station in Appalachia.  After a great run broadcasting pro hockey in Cleveland, he took his talents to the desert to announce Arizona State football and basketball. Hacksaw also hosted a sports talk show on KTAR in Phoenix shocking the locals with critical comments of ASU's football suspension, the Suns getting blown out in the first round of the 1981 NBA playoffs, and the ineptitude of Bowie Kuhn during the 1981 MLB strike. This was the start of the “Best 15 Minutes in Radio.” This was the start of “Putting Topics on the Table.”  “React!”  Lee was determined to grab his listeners by the throat and hold them for 4 hours of compelling sports talk radio. Hacksaw's reputation in Arizona led to a 1986 phone call from the Noble Broadcast Group in San Diego to be the San Diego Chargers play by play guy and start a sports talk show on the Mighty 690.  At the time the station was broadcasting rock n roll and Wolfman Jack. Little did they know that things were going to radically change in the next few years. Lee was the only sports guy in the entire station, and he started with a blank slate.  How in the hell was he going to pull this off? He started by creating a 9-hour NFL Sunday broadcast with a 2-hour Countdown to Kickoff pre-game show, the live game, and then a post-game show with caller participation. The Mighty 690 Sports Talk Radio Meanwhile, every afternoon drivetime Hacksaw hosted his talk radio show using many of his provocative techniques to drive listenership. Lee was a sensation bringing sports facts, stats, and opinions in the late 1980s. He was the internet before the internet was a thing. After a brief transition to sports and news talk, the station went 100% sports starting in 1989. The Mighty 690 was the 3rd radio station in America to go all sports, and the first on the west coast. 690 had a “blowtorch signal” that carried Lee's show from “Baja to the Canadian Rockies” As 690 went all sports, many new voices took the microphone to create a wide variety of opinions and styles on sports talk: Jim Rome came on board to start his Scrub Saturday show. He later got the night shift right after Hacksaw's show, working on developing his style, his smack, and his clones. Rome later went on to national fame, but did you know Hacksaw was first offered the national gig prior to Rome but he turned it down. Steve Hartman joins the station and with Lee's recommendation he was paired up with former Monday Night Football producer Chet Forte.  Two loudmouth guys: one young, one old, one west coast, one east coast.  It was perfect. Steve Mason and John Ireland took on the morning show and later saw their careers take them to new places. Scott Kaplan and Billy Ray Smith joined the station creating a strong show and a loyal listening audience of Great Friends. The Coach John Kentera joins the station sharing his wealth of knowledge of local high school sports, plus offering his commentary on the San Diego pro and collegiate sports teams. Hacksaw on the Chargers: I root for Herbert to Win, but Spanos to Lose As a long time voice of the San Diego Chargers play-by-play, and as an NFL junkie, Hacksaw was right at home broadcasting the Chargers every Sunday. We retrace some of the magical moments of the Chargers Super Bowl season including stories about Bobby Ross, Stan Humphries, Stan Brock, Tony Martin, Dennis Gibson, and the playoff run against the Dolphins in Steelers. We reminisce about the good vibes as both the team and the community both came together in a very special way. After the 1997 season The Mighty 690 lost its broadcast rights to the t...

In addition to a busy speaking schedule, Neal serves as a speaking/teaching minister at the 28,000-member Prestonwood Church of Dallas, Texas, where he has served for over 25 years. He and his wife Sheila live in the Dallas area and have three grown children. His new book, If I Can, Y-Y-You Can! is available nationwide and at info@nealjeffrey.com We live in a world where nobody wants to live under authority. Truth is, if I'm left up to myself, it's not going to be good. I'm self-serving. I have appetites that can lead me to a place where the world says you ought to go, but if you go there, it's going to be a disaster! How do you learn to live under authority? It helps to have an older man model living under proper authority. For some, it may be their biological father. Others might see this and learn these principles from a good coach. For everyone, learning how to live under authority from God's Word is available. It is valuable to learn to live under authority before you are placed in a position of authority. Living under the authority of God means that you say “Yes, sir” to whatever God has for you. You can trust the goodness and plan of God for your life - and you can find out more about God's will for your life by spending time reading God's Word. To read more about the faith of the centurion, read the passage found in Matthew 8:5-13. One of the greatest ways that a man can honor God is to honor his wife, to cherish her, to love and care for and provide for her. You have an authority in heaven that you will answer to. Men, you need to have others around you that you will listen to as you make important decisions in life. We all need someone that we allow to hold us accountable, to speak truth into our lives, to “slap us upside the head” and bring a sense of clarity to a situation. What about the guy who has been under “bad” authority? God isn't a bad authority, but a loving and perfect authority. God can help you forgive and move past the experiences of bad authority by the power of His grace. Compare the self-sacrificing example of Jesus to the self-serving actions of others. Jesus led by serving others, even the “least of these.” That's an “authority” that you can place your trust in and delight in. Two take-aways: If you're not under authority, you need to consider coming under the loving authority of God. If you're in a position of authority, are you using your position and power in a self-serving fashion or are you leading by example, serving others, working to make those around you better?

Life Lesson from Neal - the life of comparison is a losing game. If you aren't confident with who God has made you to be,  you'll never fully know all that God has planned and prepared for YOU! Out of high school, Welker was offered a scholarship at Texas Tech to play for the Red Raiders.  His amazing athleticism prompted Welker to win the Mosi Tatupu Award, given annually to the best special teams' player in college football. He was also named to the Sports Illustrated All-Decade Team as a punt returner.  Yet, after his senior year, Welker was not invited to the NFL Scouting Combine. Welker signed as an undrafted free agent with the San Diego Chargers.  After the Chargers he decided to sign with the Miami Dolphins where he was mostly used on special teams. Welker joined the New England Patriots beginning a lustrous five year career with the team.  While in New England, Welker led the league in receptions in 2007, 2009 and 2011.  He holds the four highest single-season reception totals in Patriot history, as well as four of the top ten receiving yardage totals, including the franchise record.  Welker was selected to the Pro Bowl, the All-Pro Team, or both, in every season of his Patriots career. In 2013, Welker signed a two-year, $12 million contract with the Denver Broncos. In his debut as a Bronco, Welker had nine receptions for 67 yards and two touchdowns against the Baltimore Ravens.  By week 11, Welker had more touchdowns than he had the entire previous season with the Patriots and as many as he had in any season with New England.  In January 2014, he earned his third AFC Championship win after he helped the Broncos defeat his former team, the New England Patriots.  In 2017, Wes became an NFL Assistant Coach for the Houston Texans and in 2019, he became the Wide Receivers Coach for the San Francisco 49ers.  He currently serves as the Wide Receivers Coach for the Miami Dolphins. This edition of the Life of Fitz podcast features host Tim Fitzgerald calling his friend Marty Miller, brother of former Kansas State quarterback and assistant coach, Matt Miller. On January 8, 2022, Matthew Lee Miller died peacefully at the age of 49 at the Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas, after an 18-month battle against prostate cancer. Matt Miller was a guest on last season's Life of Fitz, during which he shared his message about men's health and making sure men 45 and older regularly ask their doctor to check their PSA score, the strongest indicator of problems with the prostate. As you may know, Fitz also has stage four prostate cancer, but he was declared in remission last December after more than four years of treatment and monitoring. Les Miller, the father of Marty and Matt, died on January 5 shortly before Matt's passing last holiday season. Les Miller was a longtime player personnel director in the NFL, including stints with the Kansas City Chiefs and San Diego Chargers. Marty Miller has been a West Coast scout with the Jacksonville Jaguars for nearly 20 years, working out of Boise, Idaho. *** Tim Fitzgerald is a sports journalist who writes, does TV, radio and is a long-time podcaster. He has served as publisher of GoPowercat.com, a website that focuses on Kansas State sports, for nearly 25 years. Fitz also has stage four prostate cancer, so during the initial stages of the pandemic, his doctors have advised him to stay home and lay low. Now, Fitz is healthy and in remission, but his podcast lives on. Welcome to his life and the Life of Fitz podcast. Sign up for GoPowercat VIP access and get your first month for just $1! Hunter is a standout tight end in the NFL for the New England Patriots. Before making it to the league Hunter played college ball at the University of Arkansas. From there he was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft, where he was able to share a locker room with legends like Phil Rivers and Antonio Gates. After five seasons in San Diego, Hunter signed with the Patriots and had a strong first season in Foxborough in 2021. Hunter was a fun guy to talk to. Lighthearted and easy to hang with but also serious and reflective about what matters most to him. I don't know if I can pull for the Patriots, but I'll be rooting for this guy on Sundays this fall. Above it all, he's an incredible man, husband, and father. and it was an honor to host him on the show. DISCUSSION POINTS Hunter reflects on his childhood Faith, family, football How Hunter fell in love with football Finding what drives you From the locker room to the baby nursery Why Hunter went to Arkansas Mentors in Phil Rivers and Antonio Gates Other mentors in the league The importance of small groups How to support your wife with a new born baby Date night The best marriage advice from Hunter Navigating NFL free agency as a husband and wife What Hunter is the most proud of What Hunter wants his legacy to be LINKS Hunter's IG: @hunterhenry Wife's IG: @parkerhenry7

The Bellas had their brother JJ in town and went on a tasting tour of Napa with some great stops along the way and some new friendships. Then in a shocking development, Sister Sunday was almost canceled, but it was saved at the last minute when one of The Bellas committed to the tradition and made the decision to call a babysitter so the ritual could continue. Then Nikki & Brie introduce us to an exciting new game, “Buzzin' with the Bellas!” A drinking game with astonishing results for the audience. The Bellas face-off as they give illuminating answers to absurd questions and knock back a few glasses of wine. Antonio Gates was named to 8 Pro-Bowls and 5 All-Pro teams during his 16-year NFL career on the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers, and you'll know instantly what made him a great teammate on the field when he talks to Nikki & Brie about his approach to building an incredible career on the field and in the locker room. He breaks down his method to getting the most out of Brie as a dance partner on “The Real Dirty Dancing,” if he'd ever consider being an NFL coach, how he used the competition to learn to be a better dancer, experiencing breakthroughs, and his Super Bowl prediction. Watch Brie and Antonio on “The Real Dirty Dancing” Tuesday nights on Fox 9/8c. Follow Antonio Gates on Instagram Follow Nikki & Brie on Instagram for exclusive video content and join them Fridays as they go live on The Bellas Podcast Instagram page.
