In today's episode we're going to talk about about a common concern I hear from women before they start focusing on eating for fertility: What if this morphs into unhealthy obsession/disordered eating? It's a great question and a fair concern. How do we balance the importance of striving for a consistently healthy diet while also maintaining a healthy relationship with food? In today's episode, we're talking all about intuitive eating, and how it can actually go hand-in-hand with eating for fertility. Here's what I break down:Why so many women are afraid that having nutrition targets will automatically turn into food obsessionWhat Intuitive Eating actually is, including the 10-principle framework created by dietitians Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch for eating disorder recovery, and why it wasn't specifically designed to regulate cycles, treat PCOS, or improve fertilityWhy intuitive eating and fertility nutrition are not opposites, but why nutrition education often needs to come firstHow our cravings, “healthy meal” ideas, and food rules are shaped by upbringing and diet cultureWhy many gut-health habits, like eating enough fiber or fermented foods, are not naturally intuitiveWhy extreme calorie restriction can slow your metabolism and negatively affect ovulationWhy ignoring hunger cues can damage trust with your bodyWhat “making peace with food” really means to me, including letting go of “good” and “bad” food languageHow I personally had to learn to honor fullnessWhy your hormones respond to consistent patterns over time, not one imperfect mealWhy women with PCOS are at higher risk for eating disorders, and the red flags I want you to watch for, like anxiety around social meals, skipping events, compensatory exercise, or obsessive trackingThe difference between intentional, flexible nourishment and punishing, rule-following eatingHow to adjust protein and blood sugar targets when life is hectic without falling into all-or-nothing thinkingAnd why your nutrition plan should calm your nervous system, not stress you out+so much moreConnect with Lauren:Get my FREE PCOS Guide hereJoin the Empowered Path to Pregnancy hereInstagramWork With MeThank you so much for listening to the About Health and Hormones Podcast! Send us a textHave you heard of mindful eating?Maybe you struggle with the idea of eating a piece of chocolate 'mindfully' and perhaps it is even reminiscent of your dieting or disordered eating days, where you savoured each mouthful and ate as slowly as you could to try and convince yourself you were having 'enough' food. But as Ela tells us, mindfulness, mindful eating and movement is about so much more than that. Have you ever felt that tiny bit of excitement about breaking a “food rule?” Like finally getting your hands on the “forbidden” chocolate cake, only to inhale half of it and immediately promise yourself you'll “be good” tomorrow? Yeah, we've all been there. But what if that intense food drama could just… disappear? No guilt, no shame, no last-supper mentality—just food, doing what food is supposed to do: nourish and satisfy. So, if you've ever felt trapped in food rules, if “cheat days” have ever dictated your weekend plans, or if you're just curious what the next step in healing your relationship with food looks like—this episode is for you. Tweetable Quotes "Maybe for the beginning, you might eat more of something that you have previously restricted, but it takes its place because it's no longer forbidden." - Elyse Resch "It's not like we're ruining the enjoyment of food, it's just that we don't have that charge anymore of, ‘I'm going to get my hands on this and I'm going to be so good tomorrow, I'll just eat it all right now.'" - Elyse Resch "It's all about healing. I never talk about recovery. I talk about the healing process." - Elyse Resch "So every one of us who makes a change in that kind of thinking [ weight stigmatization] is actually bettering the world." - Elyse Resch "Children are listening. OBS. In today's 200th episode, I pick up where we left off last week and clearly define and describe the remaining 8 principles of Intuitive Eating as outlined in the book Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Anti-Diet Approach, 4th edition, by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch. Last week I spent a lot of time on the first two principles in great detail as they lay the foundation for the remaining principles. There is a lot of great information in this book and as I have said, I like the theory of Intuitive Eating and for those who have not had a surgical procedure to treat their obesity and for people who don't have a complicated mess of a relationship with food … however few in number they may be… intuitive eating is a great way to have a healthy relationship with food! Listen in… take what you like – and leave the rest! Let's get started! Last week I had a fun discussion with Shea Quinn, the newest peer mentor for the full BariAftercare online program. Shea and I discussed intuitive eating and how this eating theory fits, or may not fit, persons who have had a surgical procedure to treat the disease of obesity. I got questions from listeners after the podcast dropped, asking what, exactly, intuitive eating means. Oops – apparently we forgot to clearly define intuitive eating! Because intuitive eating is a prominent topic for those who have been chronic dieters, I decided it would be a good idea to clearly define and describe the principles of Intuitive Eating as outlined in the book Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Anti-Diet Approach, 4th edition, by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch. In this episode I'll highlight the first two principles of Intuitive Eating described by the authors. This information is relevant to anyone who has hopped on and off the dieting bandwagon for years or maybe even decades! So share it with those you know who fit this description! Let's get started and next week, I'll review the remaining principles of intuitive eating.Resources:BariAfterare: www.bariaftercare.comConnie Stapleton PhD website: www.conniestapletonphd.comBariAftercare website: https://www.conniestapletonphd.com/bariaftercareBariAftercare Facebook page (for members only): https://www.facebook.com/groups/BariAftercareKevin Stephens: Your Bariatric Buddy https://www.facebook.com/groups/yourbariatricbuddy/peopleInstagram: @cale101 (Caleshia Haynes)Instagram: @therealbariboss (Tabitha Johnson)Instagram @drsusanmitchell (Dr. Susan Mitchell)Instagram: @lauraleepreston (Laura Preston)ProCare Vitamins (10% off with code ConnieStapleton)Shea Quinn: www.growwithsheaquinn.comTikTok (@growwithshea) Intuitive Eating, 4th Edition: A Revolutionary Anti-Diet Approach by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse ReschPlease subscribe to the show and rate it on Apple Podcasts, download free information at www.conniestapletonphd.com, and follow me on Twitter (@cstapletonphd), Instagram (@cstapletonphd), YouTube, LinkedIn, and on Facebook.

Have you ever wondered why diets don't work? We're sitting down with sought-after nutrition therapist Elyse Resch, co-author of the acclaimed bestseller Intuitive Eating, and the nutritionist who cured Mary Alice's relationship with food to discuss the science and psychology behind the Intuitive Eating method. We'll break down why diets don't work and how reconnecting with our inner wisdom is the key to a healthy relationship with food. In this episode of SHE MD, Mary Alice and Elyse Resch discuss deprivation and eating disorders, including orthorexia, an unhealthy obsession with eating “healthily,” going on to challenge the emotional components that drive us to see food in the binary of good or bad. Resch highlights the concept of food habituation, suggesting that regularly eating previously forbidden foods can reduce their power over you. The conversation turns to how children are influenced by their parents' food choices and the best way to keep kids healthy without projecting or shaming. With over four decades of experience, Resch advocates that you can be healthy at any size and stresses that trusting your body and giving yourself permission to eat will lead to intuitive balance. What if you could do more to understand your risk of breast cancer? CW: Talk about eating disorders, bulimia, binge eating disorder, restricted eating, purgingI'm so glad to be back in front of the microphone with you all because I recorded so many episodes before going on an African vacation that I feel I haven't reached out in a very long time! It feels good to connect again. I had a wonderful trip and you'll hear a little more about it in this episode. My guest today is Helen Bennett. She's a certified health and addiction recovery coach who specializes in helping people break free from compulsive eating and is the founder of BulimiaFreedom.com. Helen and I have just an amazing, honest, beautiful conversation about disordered eating, sharing stories from both our journeys. Helen truly understands the guilt and shame feelings as well as the challenges that come with an eating disorder and how a peaceful relationship with food can be reclaimed. This is a tough subject, and triggering, so if this is a trigger for you please practice self-care as you listen.Helen shares her personal experience with bulimia, detailing how she started the cycle of binging and purging at the young age of eight and why. It led her to what she calls “a 20-year, nightmarish battle of being caught in this horrific cycle” between restriction, overeating, binge eating, and purging. She calls it an addiction quite deliberately. She eventually found things that helped her fight her way out of the cycle and now she uses her experience to help others get free as well. Helen and I talk about the intense shame and guilt eating disorders bring with them, how hearing somebody else be open about their struggle can be such a lifeline, and we share all the struggles we each experienced in our own journeys. Helen sheds light on exactly what drives disordered eating and what fuels the addiction. We talk about what tools helped her and why they worked. There's so much information, compassion, and understanding in this episode, it moved me and made me realize how useful open communication like this is so we stop feeling isolated in our struggles. I hope you find Helen's story and knowledge as beautiful as I did.__About Helen Bennett:Coach Helen Bennett specializes in helping men and women break free of compulsive overeating. Having secretly battled bulimia for two decades, Helen has first-hand experience of the guilt, shame and frustration that comes with feeling out of control with food. She also understands the unique challenges of reclaiming a peaceful relationship with food and offers practical (and often quirky!) tools to help individuals eliminate compulsion and find lasting food freedom.Helen is a certified Health Coach and Addiction Recovery Coach and is the founder of BulimiaFreedom.com__Resources mentioned in this episode:BulimiaFreedom.comSelf-Compassion with Dr. Kristin Neff“Intuitive Eating, 4th Edition: A Revolutionary Anti-Diet Approach” by Evelyn Tribole, MS RD and Elyse Resch, MS RD FADAGabby BernsteinTommy Rosen, Recovery 2.0__Learn more about Helen Bennett:Website: HelenBennett.coInstagramFacebookYouTubeTiktokLearn more about Dr. Michelle Tubman and Wayza Health:Website: www.wayzahealth.comFollow me on Facebook and Instagram

Diets, and an obsession with weight, are so much a part of Western culture that it's hardly surprising our teens can struggle to understand how to eat well. When I researched the topic for episode 9, I discovered that many experts are using mindful - or intuitive - eating to treat patients who develop disordered eating patterns. Indeed, the Intuitive Eating Workbook, which is now in its fourth edition, is recommended on the website of the UK's premier eating disorder charity Beat. I reached out to Elyse Resch who is co-author of that book, because she has a long list of academic and industry accreditations, and decades of experience in dealing with eating issues. Even better, she's created The Intuitive Eating Workbook for Teens to help our kids at one of this vulnerable stage. I'm delighted that she agreed to help us unpick how we are talking with our teens about this tricky subject. CONTACT ELYSE RESCH: elyseresch@gmail.comhttps://elyseresch.com/EResch/DEALING WITG EMOTIONAL EATING:https://www.helpguide.org/articles/diets/emotional-eating.htm THE TEN PRINCIPLES OF INTUITIVE EATING:https://www.intuitiveeating.org/10-principles-of-intuitive-eating/• Reject the Diet Mentality. Throw out the diet books and magazine articles that offer you the false hope of losing weight quickly, easily, and permanently• Honour Your Hunger. Keep your body biologically fed with adequate energy and carbohydrates. Otherwise you can trigger a primal drive to overeat• Make Peace with Food. If you tell yourself that you can't or shouldn't have a particular food, it can lead to intense feelings of deprivation that build into uncontrollable cravings and, often, bingeing. • Challenge the Food Police. Scream a loud no to thoughts in your head that declare you're “good” for eating minimal calories or “bad” because you ate a piece of chocolate cake.• Discover the Satisfaction Factor. When you eat what you really want, in an environment that is inviting, the pleasure you derive will be a powerful force in helping you feel satisfied and content. • Feel Your Fullness. Pause in the middle of eating and ask yourself how the food tastes, and what your current hunger level is. • Cope with Your Emotions. Food won't fix any of these feelings. It may comfort for the short term, distract from the pain, or even numb you. But food won't solve the problem. • Respect Your Body. Accept your genetic blueprint. Just as a person with a shoe size of eight would not expect to realistically squeeze into a size six, it is equally futile (and uncomfortable) to have a similar expectation about body size. • Exercise—Feel the Difference. Shift your focus to how it feels to move your body, rather than the calorie-burning effect of exercise.• Honour Your Health with Gentle Nutrition. Remember that you don't have to eat perfectly to be healthy.Previous episode: https://www.teenagersuntangled.com/parenting-tips-9-how-to-help-your-teens-manage-their-screen-time-and-talking-to-them-about-healthy-eating-without-giving-them-an-eating-disorder/Support the showThanks for listening. Plans have changed and the ‘cult'ure series isn't wrapping just yet! Back after another long break, Candice shares why she's decided to keep at it; then she lays the foundation for this week's convo. Originally recorded as a Patreon bonus, Candice and wingwoman, Tracy Stamper, welcome special guest Tara Wike to the pod for a two-part deconstruction of diet ‘cult'ure. In Part 1, Tara shares a bit about her personal background, time spent teaching and training with ‘the Org,' and the wake-up call that led her into a path of recovery around disordered eating. Topics discussed include: healthism, orthorexia, intuitive eating, how systemic biases shape definitions of 'health', and how Tara is now bringing a Health At Every Size (HAES) approach to her personal and professional endeavors. And stick around to the end, because Tara's wisdom is timely. Candice expresses some in-real-time raw emotion, sharing a peek into her own disordered eating and revealing how Tara's honesty & openness has been a real wake-up call. Part 2 drops next week.Tara Wike (she/her) is an American expat living in Denmark with her husband and son. She is a leader in the design organization at The LEGO Group, and moonlights teaching Org-inspired movement classes, having recently left the Org after decades of practice. In both work and private life, Tara is passionate about creating inclusive products and experiences. Her recent recovery from disordered eating has inspired her to actively support body diversity and fight anti-fat bias, both in fitness spaces and in the broader culture.LINKS:Isabel Foxen DukeDear Sugars Podcast | Ep: Trust Your BodyThe Center for Body TrustASDAH - Health at Every Size (HAES)Diet Culture & Body Image - The Renfrew CenterWhy You Gain Belly Fat After Menopause (& Why It's Ok)Also referenced in this episode:We Have to Stop Thinking of Being ‘Healthy' as Being Morally Better, Aubrey GordonThe Body Is Not an Apology: The Power of Radical Self-Love, Sonya Renee TaylorConspirituality: How New Age Conspiracy Theories Became a Health Threat, Beres, Remski, & WalkerHealth At Every Size: The Surprising Truth About Your Weight, Lindo BaconIntuitive Eating, A Revolutionary Anti-Diet Approach, Elyse Resch and Evelyn TriboleSupport the showThe stories and opinions shared in this episode are based on personal experience and are not intended to malign any individual, group, or organization.Join The Deeper Pulse at Patreon for weekly bonus episodes + other exclusive bonus content. Hey Rebels! Today we are talking with one of THE co-authors of intuitive eating so you can understand it deeper than the over-simplified definition of "just eat when you're hungry, stop when you're full"... How can someone just listen to their body? How can someone just eat intuitively? How can someone just eat whatever they want? To start, Intuitive Eating is not just a hunger/fullness diet and after today's episode you will understand why. Intuitive Eating was first published in 1995 by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch. In 2020, they published the 4th edition. Evelyn explains what changed have been made and why they are important in this episode, as well as taking us through how the principles of Intuitive Eating even came to fruition back in the 90s. I know you're going to get so much value from this conversation, and it might just clear up some uncertainties you had about intuitive eating. ______ Check out Evelyn Tribole: Instagram: @evelyntribole Intuitive Eating Website _______ Connect with Bonnie on Instagram: @diet.culture.rebel Looking to take the next step in becoming a Diet Culture Rebel? On this episode we are going over the ten principles of Intuitive Eating, talking about Ayurvedic medicine, and tuning into natural approaches of health care. I'm weaving in my background in Public Health- teaching these principles and techniques to community; into an individual invitation to start to work with these ideas and notice where the programming and projections come from in our relationship to food and wellness. This episode is perfect for anyone who is struggling with their weight, their body, their food, or if you are someone who is just curious about exploring body consciousness in an intuitive way. I hope you enjoy this episode! As always- I love to hear your feedback! *Intuitive Eating was written by Elyse Resch & Evelyn Tribole @Wellness_Weaver
Let's stop criticizing intuitive eating. In a world where intuitive eating has become a buzzword, it's crucial to sift through the chatter and truly understand what it means. We're not here to entertain misconceptions or misinterpretations of intuitive eating—those are a whole different story. Instead, we're bringing you a discussion that revolves around the insightful critiques of intuitive eating from individuals who genuinely respect and comprehend its principles. In this episode, I am chatting with Elyse Resch (her second time on the UDE podcast, by the way!). Elyse Resch, MS, RDN, CEDS-S, Fiaedp, FADA, FAND, is a nutrition therapist in private practice in California, with over forty years of experience, specializing in eating disorders, Intuitive Eating, and Health at Every Size. She is the co-author of Intuitive Eating, now in its 4th edition, the Intuitive Eating Workbook, and The Intuitive Eating Card Deck—50 Bite-Sized Ways to Make Peace with Food. Elyse is also the author of The Intuitive Eating Workbook for Teens and The Intuitive Eating Journal—Your Guided Journey for Nourishing a Healthy Relationship with Food and a chapter contributor to The Handbook of Positive Body Image and Embodiment. She has published journal articles, print articles, and blog posts. Elyse does regular speaking engagements, podcasts, and extensive media interviews. Her work has been profiled on NPR, CNN, KABC, NBC, KTTV, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Associate Press, KFI Radio, USA Today, and the Huffington Post, among others. Elyse is nationally known for her work in helping patients break free from diet culture through the Intuitive Eating process. Her philosophy embraces the goal of reconnecting with one's internal wisdom about eating and developing body liberation, with the belief that all bodies deserve dignity and respect. She is a social justice advocate, a member of the Healer's Circle of Project Heal—Help to Eat, Accept, and Live, supervises and trains health professionals, is a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist and Supervisor, a Fellow of the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals, and a Fellow of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Tweetable Quotes “You have to look at what's happening in your life and adjust to that.” - Elyse Resch “We have to have compassion for everyone and meet them where they are and help them understand the place they're in.” - Elyse Resch “I move my body because it helps make me strong. I love it when I can pick up a box when I can twist the top off of a bottle that nobody else can. I love being strong.” - Elyse Resch “They have to do with cortisol, with our stress. If our stress is very high, if we don't know how we're going to pay our rent or get the food to pay to feed the kids or, not be able to go to a doctor because we don't have health care, the stress is so high. That is impacting our health far more than eating a ding dong.” - Elyse Resch Resources Intuitive Eating Research Studies Connect with Elyse: Instagram or check out her website at www.elyseresch.com/.

I just returned from two amazing weeks of camping, most of it out in Kananaskis in the Rocky Mountains here in Canada. I love Kananaskis: the beauty, the lack of tourists, the hiking and wildlife. Mostly I committed to not doing work while away. But on two days when smoke from the BC wildfires and rainy weather kept us inside our trailer, I did do a bit of work. I like being productive but also it helps to stave off that overwhelm of coming home to a giant pile of work that demands so much of you it's like your vacation never happened. While I was thinking about work on those days I realized I've never done an episode on what my coaching focus is, especially now that I've pivoted away from weight loss. And once I realized that I knew it was something I wanted to share. The common thread weaving through all my coaching programs is Intuitive Eating.I have three coaching programs on the go right now: Nourishment Lounge, Thrive Beyond Size, and Binge Free Breakthrough Program. They all focus on different aspects of health at every size but they are all rooted in Intuitive Eating. Intuitive Eating is essentially honoring your internal hunger and fullness cues instead of counting points or calories or using whatever other system is available. There are a lot of misconceptions about eating intuitively and I address those while also explaining how Intuitive Eating has positively affected my own life and health struggle. In the book Intuitive Eating, ten principles of the concept are outlined and I'm going to share those ten principles briefly in this episode to really help clarify exactly what it's about. I truly hope you gain some insight into a powerful way to approach food and eating and if you want to talk more about it or any of my coaching programs, please reach out to me. I'm always happy to answer your questions.Resources mentioned in this episode:“Intuitive Eating, 4th Edition: A Revolutionary Anti-Diet Approach” by Evelyn Tribole, MS, RD, and Elyse Resch, MS, RD, FADA—Learn more about Dr. Michelle Tubman and Wayza Health:Website: www.wayzahealth.comFollow me on Facebook and Instagram
This week we are talking to one of the co-founders of Intuitive Eating, Elyse Resch! Alongside Evelyn Tribole, Elyse developed and wrote the book Intuitive Eating, which has gained popularity for people who have been burned by diets and want to get back in touch with their body's intuition around food. However, this process is more complicated than it sounds. Elyse answers questions from our community and explains many of the nuances of IE for our listeners. Intuitive Eating: is it a method for weight loss? How does IE work if you don't have reliable hunger and fullness cues? Elyse reveals how she'd change up the principles for a future edition of the book What is “future deprivation”? Stef's favorite principle: Respect Your Body and how it applies to this work What about highly processed foods? How do you get to Gentle Nutrition (and/or Gentle Movement)? Interoception: what is it and how do you develop it? IE is not just instinct! It's “a dynamic interplay of instinct, emotion, and thought.” Different parts of the brain are present to give us different pieces of information. Community Question: What if I binged at night and I'm not hungry in the morning? Will my body think I'm restricting if I don't eat? Community Question: How to say No to food but not in a restrictive way? I feel sad when I have to stop eating Eating without distractions Did Elyse expect IE to get so big?
