Employees of Edgewater Hospital arrived at work on the morning of December 6, 2001 to learn the hospital abruptly closed. But the hospital didn’t just close — it closed in a shameful, outrageous and deplorable manner. Some were in shock while others said they saw this coming. How did this happen? Who let this happen? And could something like this ever happen again? The hospital’s co-founder, Dr. Maurice Mazel, opened Edgewater Hospital in 1929 and remained at the helm until his death in 1980. He oversaw the growth from one to nine buildings that made up the hospital campus. You’ll hear from former nurses, doctors and administrators who worked at Edgewater, including Dr. Rogelio Maynulet. He shares his journey from Cuba to the United States and how he joined Edgewater Hospital as a surgical assistant and worked his way up to Chief of the Medical Staff. Changes in insurance during the ’80s led hospitals all across the country scrambling to reinvent themselves. Edgewater Hospital struggled and ultimately faced closing its doors or selling to a hospital consultant named Peter Rogan. The hospital board chose to sell to Rogan in 1989. While the hospital had a solid reputation for over a half century, what happened in its final decade would forever scar its legacy.
