Was Jesus actually born in December? If not, why do we celebrate it then and not his actual birthday? Does celebrating it in December along with the traditional things that are a part of it have pagan roots? If so, does that mean Christians are wrong for celebrating Christmas? Does having a Christmas tree and other items as part of our celebration violate rules in Deuteronomy or other Bible passages? What happens when someone claims they were possessed during a crime? In this episode of Journey to the Fringe, we explore the strange collision of demonic possession, criminal law, and insanity defenses. From the chilling Ossett murder case in England, to the infamous “Devil Made Me Do It” trial in Connecticut, to the Son of Sam killings and the execution of Sean Sellers, we uncover how courts wrestle with claims of the supernatural. Along the way, we examine the blurred lines between psychology, belief, and responsibility—and how possession defenses reveal society's deepest fears about evil, madness, and free will.–––What happens when the defense in a murder trial isn't insanity, self‑defense, or diminished capacity—but demonic possession? In this episode of Journey to the Fringe, we explore the eerie intersection of criminal law, psychology, and the supernatural. Courts don't recognize demons as legal entities, but history is full of defendants who claimed they were compelled by otherworldly forces. Judges and juries are then left to decide: was it psychosis, manipulation, or something darker? We examine some cases where possession collided with the justice system:The Ossett Murder Case (1974, England): An exorcism that ended in tragedy.“The Devil Made Me Do It” Trial (1981, Connecticut): Arne Cheyenne Johnson's shocking defense that inspired The Conjuring franchise.David Berkowitz, the “Son of Sam” (1976–77, New York): A serial killer who claimed a demon spoke to him.Sean Sellers (1980s, Oklahoma): A teenager who blamed Satanic possession for murders.R. v. Parks (1987, Canada): A case where sleepwalking, automatism, and criminal responsibility collided in unprecedented ways.Through these stories, we uncover how possession defenses reveal society's deepest anxieties about evil, free will, and accountability. The legal system may not validate the supernatural, but it cannot ignore the chaos such claims unleash in courtrooms and communities. ORIGINAL AIR DATE: OCT 26, 2018“Samhain” (pronounced "sow-in," with the "ow" like in "cow," or “sow-een,” with “ow” as in “glow”) is an Irish Gaelic term for the time of "summer's end,” as well as a festival to mark the end of the harvest season and the onset of winter which, in the Gaelic / Celtic calendar, marked the beginning of the year. Because the Celtic day began and ended at sunset, not sunrise, the festival was traditionally celebrated from October 31 to November 1. Sanhaim is the ancient backdrop to Halloween, not only in terms of the calendar, but also in terms of basically all the modern elements of that holiday. This episode investigates the history of Samhain and its curious links to the ancient biblical worldview of demons, giants, and the realm of the dead.Articles for this episode:In public domain, via archive.org, from Hastings' Encyclopædia of Religion and Ethics (ed. The bumper music for this episode, chosen by our Presbyterian producer, comes from the 1964 comic rendition of an Anglican homily by Alan Bennett ("My Brother Esau, Beyond the Fringe"). The subject discussed by pudcast co-hosts, Korey Maas (Lutheran), Miles Smith (Anglican), and D. G. Hart (Presbyterian) may be the same -- Anglicanism -- but the approach is not comedic. Anglicans around the world have been in the news, from the appointment of a new (and female) archbishop of Canterbury, to the decision by a prominent Baptist historical theologian to join ACNA. All the recent news deserves way more than roughly 55 minutes of banter. But with the help of our resident Anglican, Miles Smith, we learned about the choppy water in which the bishops, clergy, and laity find themselves.
Det er ikke mange av de. Tror kanskje bare det er to, muligens tre. Komikere som har startet i England og gjort en karriere som standuper. I en av de tre største byene for standup. I verden. The story I told in episode 19 was based on two different visits to Chicago. I was the one with the shirt who did nothing. My 12 year old daughter, Addi, was the one who made the care package. That 12 year old girl will be 23 in less than a month, and she is not the same person she once was. Happy Halloween -- but also, give this a listen any time of year if you're a fan of cosmic, existential horror and esoteric spirituality! To help celebrate this year on The Fringe FM, Joe Rupe of Lighting the Void invited me to read a short story of my choosing, and the first one that popped into my mind was this lesser known Lovecraft story that has always been my favorite. Not only do the events of the story occur on the day before and of my real-life birthday, but they also speak to every part of my artistic sensibilities: horror, unease, mystery, spirituality and philosophy, mad science, and unexplainable phenomena! In many ways this story has heavily influenced the notions that boiled over and became Black Hoodie Alchemy. This story is as beautiful as it is eerie and haunting, with even a Hills-Have-Eyes sort of flare to it that could potentially upset the staunchest of social justice warriors, but thankfully stops at the threshold of full-on xenophobia (something that cannot be said of some of Lovecraft's other stories.)In any case, I was pleasantly surprised to find that this story is also in the public domain at this point, so here it is for all your listening enjoyment! Happy Halloween and salutations to you year-round horror fiends listening to this out of season! Nothing is as it seems this week because it's just the two of us - no special guest! We discuss the return of Porcupine Man from “The Transformation” and how we feel about how he is handled. We agree that it isn't necessarily a highlight episode and we point to a scene especially that seems a bit contrived. We also voice some frustrations about the leaps in logic that this episode makes, but don't worry, this is still Fringe, though, so we definitely also have plenty of good things to say! Farmers and ranchers are in a particularly vulnerable spot amid this protracted shutdown of the federal government. President Donald Trump's erratic trade policies have driven up the cost of doing business, and complicated access to international markets, even as crop prices have come in below profitable levels. Trump's push prop up Argentinian President Javier Milei, an admirer and populist ally, through direct cash bailouts and quadrupling the beef imports from that country have also made life difficult for North Dakota ranchers at a time when farm and ranch bankruptcies are soaring. Also, farmers and ranchers, who typically don't have access to employer-backed health insurance policies, are major users of the insurance marketplace created by Obamacare. Federal subsidies for those plans are the primary bone of contention between Democrats and Republicans during the shutdown. North Dakota Insurance Commissioner Jon Godfread has warned that if Congress doesn't renew those subsidies soon, those who get their insurance from the marketplace will face dramatic premium increases. It is in this environment that the North Dakota Farm Bureau, one of the largest and most importance agriculture advocacy groups in the state, is set to elect a new leader. Val Wagner, one of the candidates for that position, joined this episode of Plain Talk. "I personally just feel like the best way to have people understand where their food comes comes from, and for them to care about where their food comes from, is to talk to them about it, to have a relationship with them, so that they understand this isn't just some name on a box somewhere," she said. "That it really is a family that's behind all of this." She also addressed the complex politics around agriculture issues, particularly at a time when much of the pain farmers and ranchers are facing is being caused a president rural Americans voted for overwhelmingly. Wagner says that she wants to make the group less ideological than it has been in the past. "I really think that's our biggest thing, is that we need to re-engage those members that we have started to not hear from because they feel like sometimes the fringe is getting more attention than they are," she said. ORIGINAL AIR DATE: APR 2, 2016Biblical scholars know that Paul subordinates the Law to Christ (Gal 3:1-18). He writes about how the Law could not result in the fruition of the promises given to Abraham (and, by extension, to all nations; Gen 12:1-3). Paul then asks “Why then was the law given?” He answers that it was “added because of transgressions” (Gal 3:19). The most common assumption is that this (somehow) means the Law was a response to Adam's sin, or human sins. But Adam sinned only once so far as the Bible tells us.Opting for the law being added in response to human sins doesn't address why humanity became so wicked that it needed the law. Most Christians would defer to Adam's transgression at this point, but there is no Romans 5:12 in Galatians (Romans is a later epistle). This episode takes a minority view of Paul's statement about the addition of the law—at least among Christians. This view, however, reflects the viewpoint of nearly every Second Temple Jewish text (Paul's era) known to exist that comments on human depravity: that the Law was added to restrain human evil, which proliferated not because of Adam, but because of the sin of the Watchers in Gen 6:1-4.

RHLSTP #584 - Eleven Holes? - It's approaching the end of the Fringe (for Rich at least) and his guest is, I think we can all agree, at least his equal as a ventriloquist, Nina Conti. They talk about her fantastic new independent film, Sunlight, how it's a dark love story about a suicidal man, a woman in a monkey suit and an attempt to dig up a grave to recover a $20,000 dollar watch, but so much more than that. How the idea and the real life love began in the middle of a 50 hour improv session, the dangers of going under water in a monkey suit, how the film might appeal to Furries, how it could never be written by AI and why you should definitely see it. Plus how Nina ended up in Spinal Tap 2 and a good indication of why Richard didn't, how ventriloquist dummies become their own people (or monkeys), the dark past of ventriloquists and whether Nina resents her monkey.Nina's directorial debut film 'Sunlight' will have a UK theatrical release from 18th October 2025 (screening details here), or you can pre-order it on Apple TV here (UK) and here (Ireland) - available digitally from 28th November 2025.Nina Conti has a UK tour extension of her hit live show 'Whose Face Is It Anyway?' from 30th September - 30th October 2025. George Bernard Shaw said, “The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.” Communication is tricky. On one hand, we are all communicating something, verbal or non-verbal at all times. On the other hand, I think most of us have significant room to grow in this area. I think most communication issues arise not from things said, but from things unsaid.
