Devil In Disguise: John Wayne Gacy Review

This week on The Commentary Booth, Jamie Apps and Corrina Mabey dig up the past to unmask one of America's most terrifying killers — John Wayne Gacy. The duo dive into Devil In Disguise: John Wayne Gacy, the chilling true-crime drama that pulls audiences deep into the grim 1970s Chicago underworld where the “Killer Clown” hid in plain sight.Across eight tense episodes, the Peacock miniseries traces Gacy's horrifying double life as a local contractor by day and serial murderer by night. Jamie and Corrina unpack everything from Michael Chernus' unsettling portrayal of Gacy to the show's raw, gritty style that captures the era's claustrophobic fear. They also discuss how the series resists glamorising violence, instead focusing on the victims and exposing the failures of a homophobic justice system that allowed Gacy's crimes to continue for so long. The hosts debate the show's time jumps, reflect on the haunting realism of its cinematography, and explore why this series feels more Mindhunter and Dahmer than Ed Gein.Highlights Breakdown: - A Victim-Centric Masterpiece: Discover why this series stands head and shoulders above other serial killer dramatisations (looking at you, Monster: The Ed Gein Story!) by placing the victims, their families, and the lasting trauma at the forefront. - The Performance of a Monster: Our take on Michael Chernus's terrifyingly accurate portrayal of Gacy, capturing his chilling instant switch from charismatic public figure to menacing killer. - Gritty 70s Authenticity: How the show's raw, unglamorous style and clever editing choices create a gripping and respectful tone, reminiscent of fan-favourites like Mindhunter and Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. - Societal Failures Exposed: A deep dive into the homophobia and systemic police failures that allowed Gacy to prey on marginalised young men for far too long. - The Final Verdict: Is the series flawless? We discuss the pros and cons, including some divisive time-jumping narrative choices in the later episodes.Whether you're fascinated by true crime or drawn to stories that confront the darkest corners of humanity, this episode delivers a gripping, reflective discussion about this heavy but essential watch for true crime aficionados. There's a disturbing pattern in America's justice system — one that stretches from the past into the present. From the John Wayne Gacy investigation of the 1970s to Aaron Spencer's prosecution today, we keep coming back to the same haunting question: Why does the system protect predators and punish those who fight them? In the first half of this episode, Defense Attorney Bob Motta — host of Defense Diaries and BURIED: Inside the John Wayne Gacy Investigation — takes us deep inside the newly remastered Gacy Tapes: never-before-heard recordings of Gacy speaking with his defense attorneys, including Bob's own father. For decades, those tapes sat in darkness. Now, with enhanced audio and new detective interviews, BURIED exposes how the Gacy investigation really unfolded — revealing police shortcuts, ignored victims, and the desperation that finally cracked the case. It's a chilling reminder of how often the system gets it wrong — even when it's trying to get it right. Then, in the second half, we shift to Lonoke County, Arkansas, where a father named Aaron Spencer is facing second-degree murder charges after allegedly shooting a known predator he found with his 14-year-old daughter. The twist? Spencer is now running for sheriff — against the very department that arrested him. His slogan: “Restoring Trust.” To some, he's a hero. To others, a vigilante. But to many, he's proof that faith in law enforcement has been replaced by something darker — a belief that justice only comes when you take it into your own hands. From Gacy's crawl space to Arkansas courtrooms, this is the connective tissue of true crime: the failure of systems built to protect us, and the people forced to fill the gaps. Now, they've been restored with pristine clarity — revealing not just Gacy's chilling words, but the inner workings of the investigation that brought him down. We dig into the revelations that shook even the detectives who worked the case — shocking admissions, hidden police files, and details from evidence logs that tell a different story than the official narrative. BURIED isn't another Gacy biography — it's an investigation into the investigation itself, uncovering how systemic bias, bad assumptions, and desperation shaped one of the most infamous manhunts in American history. If you've seen Devil in Disguise on Peacock, this conversation goes even deeper — beyond the horror, into the human failures that let Gacy kill for so long. This is justice under a microscope. How does a person live two completely different lives—one as a smiling neighbor, volunteer, and businessman, and the other as one of the most prolific serial killers in American history? In this special episode of Hidden Killers with Tony Brueski, we go beyond the crimes of John Wayne Gacy and into the psychology that made his double life possible. Gacy wasn't just a murderer—he was a master manipulator who weaponized charm, denial, and narcissism to create a version of himself the world would trust. We break down how Gacy's brain allowed him to compartmentalize—keeping the “good guy” identity separate from the predator underneath. Through psychological insight and documented facts, Tony explores how cognitive dissonance, moral disengagement, and grandiose narcissism all collided to form the mask that fooled Chicago for years. You'll hear how his early childhood trauma shaped a lifelong need for control, why he sought validation through community status, and how that craving for power morphed into something monstrous. This isn't a story about body counts or brutality—it's a psychological autopsy of deceit, denial, and domination. From his carefully crafted public persona to the chilling calm he maintained during his arrest, this episode dissects what happens when self-deception becomes a survival mechanism—and how even the most convincing façade eventually cracks. If you've ever wondered how someone like John Wayne Gacy could laugh with cops at a barbecue one day and bury a victim beneath his house the next—this is the story that finally explains it. Listen, reflect, and remember: evil doesn't always look like a monster. For decades, the story of John Wayne Gacy has been sensationalized, flattened into caricature, and spun into horror tropes. But in Peacock's new limited series Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy, that mask is coming off—and in this interview, we go behind the scenes with the team responsible for flipping the true crime genre on its head. Joining us are series showrunner and executive producer Patrick McManus, actor Michael Chernus—who portrays Gacy with terrifying subtlety—and criminal defense attorney Bob Motta, whose father was on Gacy's original legal team. Together, we dissect how the show avoids glorifying the killer and instead places the focus exactly where it belongs: on the victims, their families, and the systemic failures that allowed Gacy to operate in plain sight. This isn't a glorified biopic. There are no salacious murder scenes. No glamorizing evil. What you get is a chilling, grounded retelling that treats its subject matter—and its audience—with respect. We also dig into what it takes to play a predator without slipping into caricature, what it's like to listen to Gacy's original defense tapes, and why true crime needs to evolve beyond its fascination with monsters and lean into the wreckage they leave behind. If you care about accuracy, nuance, and storytelling with a conscience, this episode is essential.  #JohnWayneGacy #DevilInDisguise #PeacockOriginals #TrueCrimeSeries #MichaelChernus #BobMotta #HiddenKillersPodcast #TrueCrimeInterview #GacySeries #VictimCenteredStorytelling Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? What do you do when the monster lives next door? Between 1972 and 1978, John Wayne Gacy lured dozens of boys and young men into his suburban Chicago home under the guise of job offers, parties, and charm. He was a contractor. A volunteer. A political glad-hander. And at night, he was a killer—burying bodies under his house while waving to neighbors from the front yard. In this longform true crime deep dive, we unravel the full story of John Wayne Gacy—from his early life and chilling psychological profile, to the horrific details of how he targeted victims, how the system failed to stop him, and the legal process that finally brought him to justice. This isn't just another “killer clown” story. This is a story about how evil wears a mask. How a man with a camera-ready smile, a Pogo the Clown costume, and a reputation for charity work got away with 33 murders while police looked the other way. We dig into the psychological red flags, the forensic evidence, the survivor testimony, and the court case that exposed one of the most prolific serial killers in American history. Based strictly on confirmed facts and trial records, this episode is designed for a true crime audience that values depth, accuracy, and emotional clarity. It's a cautionary tale about power, manipulation, and what happens when predators know exactly how to blend in. This is the story of the man beneath the floorboards. This is the story of John Wayne Gacy. #TrueCrime #JohnWayneGacy #SerialKillers #GacyTrial #TrueCrimePodcast #CrawlSpace #ForensicPsychology #HiddenKillers #TrueCrimeYouTube #ColdCases Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video?
