This week it was revealed that high-ranking Canadian Cardinal Marc Ouellet is one of more than 80 members of the clergy facing allegations of sexual abuse in a class-action lawsuit in Quebec. Following that news, the Vatican said a preliminary examination it did into allegations against Ouellet found the case doesn't warrant further investigation. Ouellet has denied the allegations. Scholars Julie Hanlon Rubio and Paul J. Schutz of Santa Clara University just released a report called Beyond Bad Apples: Understanding Clergy Perpetrated Sexual Abuse as a Structural Problem & Cultivating Strategies for Change. They join guest host Megan Williams to talk about the factors that enable abuse in the church and the structural change needed to combat it.
Years ago when I was in the military, I had the privilege of serving with some of the finest people I will ever know in my entire life. It's not a cliché. Many of my brothers in arms were incredibly honest, hard working, dedicated, loyal, intelligent, creative, courageous, and more. And yet, if I'm being brutally honest, I also have to acknowledge that I also served alongside quite a few scumbags. I remember one enlisted soldier in my unit who was arrested by Secret Service agents one day because he had been counterfeiting $100 bills on a Laserjet printer. (He should have been a central banker instead.) Others routinely beat their wives and children. Others were petty criminals and kleptomaniacs. It was a small number, for sure. But there were certainly plenty of bad apples in the military. And there are always going to be bad apples in any large organization-- whether it's the Army, or the entire federal government. This is important. Because we live in a time when apparently the solution to EVERYTHING is MORE GOVERNMENT. Bigger government. And more expensive government. This week, just like that… poof. The government became much bigger. Politicians are cheering this legislative ‘victory' as the dubiously-named ‘Inflation Reduction Act' was passed and signed into law on Tuesday. As I've said before, the bill will probably make inflation worse. But even more, the bill aims to expand the size and scope of the federal government… as if it weren't big enough and powerful enough already. And this takes me back to bad apples. There are already millions of people who work for the federal government. Even if just the bottom 10% are bad apples-- people who abuse their positions and power for personal gain, or because of their ideological fanaticism, then a lot of terrible things can happen. The IRS is going to potentially hire tens of thousands of people. If even 10% of those are bad apples, the damage they'll cause is incalculable. Exhibit A: Just take a look at the CDC. This week they admitted, rather sheepishly, that nearly everything they did during the COVID pandemic was wrong. The CDC acknowledged being plagued by a horrific culture of selfishness, bureaucracy, fear, careerism, and ineptitude, and that they need a “reset”. “It's not lost on me that we fell short in many ways,” said CDC Director Rochelle Walensky, in an honest assessment of her agency's response to COVID. Of course there are some smart, good-natured, intelligent people who work for the CDC. But with such a toxic culture, the entire organization became a Bad Apple within the government. And the consequences that resulted will be felt for years to come. Thanks in part to the CDC's response to COVID, the US economy ground to a halt. The supply chain broke down. Mental health, substance abuse, and domestic violence problems skyrocketed. Censorship and cancel culture reigned. And trust in major institutions, including the medical industry, plummeted. Constantly expanding the size and authority of government only increases this risk of terrible consequences. Yet it seems to be the only solution that politicians can ever come up with. This is the topic of our podcast today: bad apples… and why having a Plan B is really so important.
This week, FBI agents conducted a search at the Florida residence of former President Donald Trump. We'll leave it to others to speculate on the justifications, causes, and ramifications of the unprecedented law enforcement action, but should the historical record of the FBI itself provide a cause for increased scrutiny or increased trust in the propriety of the search? Joining me to discuss the FBI's complicated history is my colleague Ken Braun, who recently wrote a history of the “G-Men” for InfluenceWatch and CapitalResearch.org. Ep 125 Stephen Mintie - Hot Butter Steve - https://www.youtube.com/c/HotButteredProductions Personal Bio: Air Force Brat. Went to high school in Minot, ND. Was a computer and book nerd growing up and wanted to get into science and engineering. I took an Aeronautics class in high school and took the controls of a Cessna. Also would compete in self propelled balsa wood aircraft building and while my peers would buy kits, I always designed my own and of course never won because of that! I was always more of a rocketry type person. Life took a 180 and I ended up going to the University of Minnesota for 7 years studying jazz performance and music education with the goal of becoming a teacher. I'm a jazz and classical pianist, and I've done a lot of work with steel drums. I don't do much music work anymore, but I do play in a classic rock style band. After college, I did a 180 again and worked for and eventually became a superintendent of a large and busy funeral home and cemetery. While there I skydived for the first time with a coworker who had terminal cancer. I ended up breaking my tailbone on landing. It was a great experience to share though and I actually personally dug her grave and buried her myself. I currently am the account director and Google SEO analyst of a restroom and shower trailer company. My current work has been extremely supportive of my endeavors in ppg and because I can work remote too, they allow me to fly just about whenever I want, and travel often for gatherings. In general I'm kind of all over the place. I read a lot of science, history, astrophysics, and world event type stuff. I used to raise chickens and was into guerrilla gardening (basically planting huge green things all over the place). Ppg Bio: I got into ppg during a very difficult time in my life. Within a year's time frame, I got a divorce and walked away from my career which I had my entire self identity wrapped into. It absolutely killed me. During that time I followed Trent Palmer and thought it'd be neat to fly the way he did, but never would I have the budget to afford a bush plane. From there I started researching ultralights, and eventually found Tucker. I told myself if things improved, I'd take it up as I could do it safely, and fly without a cockpit which really interested me. Soon after, I found an awesome new job that paid me a lot more, appreciated me and gave me the freedom to pursue it. I trained in April of 2021 with my much younger brother. He wasn't even interested in ppg, he just wanted to share my adventure and turned out to be the best in the class. Training was tough because of bad weather, and I actually got lines in the prop my first take off attempt, and it was my personal wing too. After training, I didn't have a motor for over 4 months so I practiced ground handling the whole time which paid off when I returned to flight, because I didn't have to think about glider control not to mention I can easily launch in nil wind, or reverse in strong conditions. I ended up not returning to the first school and joined the Nebraska Paramotor community. My brother stopped pursuing ppg by that point. I've been flying regularly since last August and during that time I've flown at EFD, Salton Sea including the nearby canyons, Glamis, Arizona Flying Circus, Ak-Chin, AZ copper mine, Dauphin Island, the Florida panhandle, and Bad Apples. My current goal is to fly with purpose and practice and return to the fundamentals. Right now I'm working on landing accuracy and I'll end every flight with a 1000 foot climb up, motor kill, and spot land. Just recently started doing foot drags (which I told myself I wouldn't do, and now......... lol), big ears, and just starting to get into energy management a bit, barely scratching the surface though. Hope to work on my PPG 3 by early next year. I love flying and it's completely changed my life especially since I got into this as a destroyed person. I love the community to. I thought I was going to be a loner, but somehow someway managed to befriend a huge part of the community, by mostly just being my weird self. I'm pretty gregarious, I enjoy laughter and not taking oneself too seriously, and my personality ranges from a quiet active listener to a loud type A personality if I'm in the right environment. I started a Youtube channel prior, Hot Buttered Productions, which is a shared channel with my brother though he stopped making stuff. I enjoy making content because it can be a canvas for many things such as just being weird, funny, expressing something that means a lot to me without words, or creating a window into slice of life segments to show what it's like for someone that has struggled with this too. I openly talk about the struggles with the mental game, preflight anxiety, I was terrible at landings for a long while, just about anything so it's more relatable for your average person.

Back in the day, before there were refrigerators, people had to store their crop harvest together over periods of time in big batches. Something that they learned, sometimes the hard way, is that just one bad apple that's really bruised, rotting or starting to go bad gives off a gas known as ethylene. This gas affects the other fruit close to it by speeding up the ripening process and if left unchecked can eventually spoil the entire bunch. You've probably also heard the term “one bad apple” used in regard to people, meaning “Well, it's just one bad apple, the whole group isn't rotten”. Others have used it to say, “One bad apple is an indicator that there's probably more just like it”. Meaning a singular bad apple can affect the bunch with their negative behavior, demeanor, beliefs or attitude, creating the same or similar negative qualities that can affect those around them. Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we're talking about how what we surround ourselves with and what we allow within our own mind, has influence, whether that be for the good or the bad. This means we need to hold some level of vigilance over who or what it is we allow to come into our thoughts and into our lives. This extends to include the old stories and beliefs we hold in our mind. Is what we're telling ourselves helpful, healing, and loving - or - have those old subconscious stories become harmful and a hindrance to happy living? A good question to consider is… Is what we think and tell ourselves spilling out into the world around us to the point that we've become the bad apple? And if so, what am I going to do about it to pluck out that “moldy fruit?” KK's Takeaways: • Be Mindful (7:57) • I Was Going Through A Lot (14:36) • We Get A Say Now (22:55) • Plucking Out That Moldy Fruit (26:43) • Old Subconscious Programming (27:42) Karen Kenney is a certified Spiritual Mentor, Certified Hypnotist, writer, author, speaker, and the host of The Karen Kenney Show Podcast. In the early 1900s, the auto industry reigned supreme in Lansing. But another, more deadly industry was making moves in the shadows. Fruit. When two rival fruit companies owned by Italian immigrants with strong ties to La Cosa Nostra went to war, no one was safe. Using fruit stands as a front throughout the city, a secret battle raged for years- contract killings, bombings, murder, extortion. Lansing's Fruit War was among the Capital City's best kept secrects...until now.

Vincent Cannato, noted historian and Jonah's fellow deracinated New Yorker, returns to the Remnant for a nerdily random discussion of cops, neoliberalism, and latent Russophobia. With tensions rising between East and West, Vin believes we are in the midst of an “ideological Cold War,” but Jonah (whose pronunciation of “Pokémon” may distract from any serious points he raises) is less convinced. How will America's conflict with Russia and China unfold, and what strategy should the United States pursue? For that matter, is New York heading back to the ‘70s? What's fueling America's crime wave? And will safetyism soon destroy Vin's university from within?
