There are concerns high wages paid to casual medical staff to plug gaps in the health system are discouraging doctors from taking full time positions. Te Whatu Ora said its forecast full year spend on contractors and consultants is 477 million dollars or about 4 percent of its annual internal personnel budget. But it can't say exactly how much of that is for locums or doctors who plug roster gaps. Dr Lisa Ten Eyck spoke to Lisa Owen.

The NFL Diversity in Sports Medicine Pipeline Initiative launched in 2022. The league-wide program aims to increase and diversify the pipeline of students interested in pursuing careers in sports medicine and, over time, help to diversify NFL club medical staffs. Students from 21 medical schools were matched with NFL clubs across the league for one-month clinical rotations focused on primary care sports medicine and/or orthopedic surgery. The rotations provide students with the opportunity to learn from and work directly with club medical staff as they deliver care to players across the league. Student clinical rotations began as training camps opened for the 2024 NFL season. Marquisha Myles from MSU's College of Human Medicine is one of the students who participated in the initiative, and she joins me on MSU Today. Conversation Highlights: (1:13) – What's your background, and why did you choose MSU for medical school? (2:45) – Did you always know you wanted to go into medicine? And why orthopedics? (4:26) – Tell us about this cool program in which you participated. (6:15) – Talk about the burgeoning healthcare footprint in Detroit in which MSU is a major player. (7:11) – Why is diversity in medicine important to you? (9:40) – What's your advice for students considering medical school? Listen to MSU Today with Russ White on the radio and through Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and wherever you get your shows.

Jane Couper is a working mum, a woman on a mission, with a passion for making things better.Jane initially worked for a local nursing agency, that supplied nurses to hospitals, care homes and ran a domiciliary care service. She then went to work for Medacs, who were part of the Impellam Group at the time, one of the largest recruitment groups in the UK and now an international provider of Managed Services. In 2020, just before the pandemic, Jane purposely chose to join a local company that brought her closer to home and more able to manage the challenges of being a working mum to 2 young children. Today on the Pod we chat with Kate. We hear her harrowing story about her daughter Phoebe. Phoebe became seriously ill in a matter of a few hours. The paramedics who were called treated Kate and Phoebe with disdain and contempt. That behaviour followed them in to the emergency department where Kate was treated like hysterical mother and her concern that Phoebes condition was, in fact, meningococcal, were not taken seriously. They were told she had influenza B and sent home. Regardless of the fact Kate was begging them to admit Phoebe as her daughter was so ill. They went home, and a few hours later, returned. By this stage Phoebe was gravely ill. We discuss what happened. How important calling “Ryan's Rule” is. How Phoebe nearly died and the impact this had on her and the family. Due to what meningoccal does to a body, Phoebe required a kidney transplant. We chat with Kate about donating her own kidney to her daughter and the process around that. This is a gut wrenching episode that encourages everyone to stand up for your rights as a patient in a hospital. The great news from this Podcast is that Phoebe has just graduated university. She is happy and as healthy as she can be, considering the ongoing health monitoring she needs to attend and the anti-rejection drugs she will be on forever.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Check out Dave Tilley's brand new book, The Gymnastics Culture Cure, below!www.shiftmovementscience.com/gccImagine stepping into a gymnastics gym where every individual - from the coaches to the parents, medical staff, and support team - is fully engaged, thriving, and performing at their best. That's the kind of environment we're exploring in this episode, drawing inspiration from my book "The Gymnastics Culture Cure". Having been a part of both the positive and negative side of gymnastics culture, I've spent the last decade distilling the elements that contribute to a successful gymnastics environment.First up, let's tackle the often overlooked issue of aligning the coaching staff. You'll learn from my experiences about how to ensure your team is a good fit for each other, managing difficult conversations, and holding everyone accountable. But it's not just about the coaches. Parents are our partners in this journey, and by debunking misconceptions, educating them about the sport, and maintaining open communication, we can ensure they are fully engaged and confident. But that's not all. We'll also delve into the proactive integration of medical staff, not just as a reaction to injuries, but as part of the overall improvement of the athlete. Strength and conditioning professionals are increasingly playing a key role in shaping a yearly plan that tackles performance-based issues. So buckle up and get ready for an enlightening conversation that will leave you with a clear understanding of how to cultivate a harmonious, inclusive, and successful gymnastics culture. We appreciate you listening! For years and years, maybe even decades, the LA Clippers have had horrific luck with Injuries. Dating back to the 80s, early 2000s, Lob City, and even now with Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, they have not been able to consistently keep their players healthy.Even this past season, Paul George and Kawhi Leonard were both out in the playoffs against the Phoenix Suns. There has been a lot of chatter around the fan base about the medical staff and wether or not they are doing their jobs to the best of their abilities. Head Athletic Trainer Jasen Powell has been called out as a result, not to mention that he is the last remaining part of the Sterling Era. How much is he to blame? Is he being unfairly targeted? In this episode, Die hard Los Angeles Clippers Fan and Host Darian Vaziri asks the question of if the medical staff should be questioned and looks at examples of why they are in hot water with fans. He looks at past injuries and incidents preceding the 213 era and why targeting Jasen Powell is a bit unfair. He closes by giving his say on how the team can move past this discussion this season.
