Special Sermon - Anzac Day 2021 - Romans 5:6-10 by Allan Quak
Jesus the True Vine is the Only source of spiritual life. For us to know if we are a true disciple or a fake disciple we need recognise the difference between the Father bringing us through a difficult pruning process, or the Father cutting us off. Unfortunately, the first 3-4 minutes of this message was not recorded. We started by recognising that by this time in His ministry Jesus has healed many people, and even raised people from the dead – most of whom were strangers. However, Lazarus, Martha and Mary are not strangers, they are more like family. So when Martha and Mary send the message that Lazarus is sick Jesus surprisingly waits two days and He only travels when He knows Lazarus is dead. We then read John 11:17-37. We surmised that Martha and Mary would feel confused, disappointed, and perhaps a little cheated. Jesus didn’t turn up as expected and, even though he was four days away, He could have healed the same way he healed the servant of the Centurion. Finally, when Jesus does turn up, the disappointment, confusion and hurt can be found in the words of Martha and Mary Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died (vs.21, 32). Now keep listening to the message … You can read the written sermon here: https://www.sermoncentral.com/sermons/the-resurrection-and-the-life-allan-quak-sermon-on-resurrection-255356

When we confess the name of Jesus, the I am who is the Gate, we will always have a Saviour who will bring us to the pasture of life to the full, no matter which empty-promise pastures we have detoured to along the way. As the Light of the World Jesus takes us out of darkness and worldliness. Darkness and worldliness does not come because we are the worst we can be; it comes because we are following the distraction of Satan who masquerades as an angel of light. Stripping Jesus naked and gambling over his clothes is business as usual for the Roman soldiers. However, because the humiliation of Jesus is ordained by God for our redemption, we cannot treat the nakedness of our crucified Jesus in a business as usual fashion. Micah preaches at a time when there is spiritual lethargy. Micah’s nakedness is an indication of the lengths God will go to where He ensures that He gets our attention so that, ultimately, we fix our eyes on Jesus rather than having misplaced trust. In the midst of his suffering Job is able to continue to be obedient. Job recognises that the nakedness of birth and death is a lesson to all to measure their life by trusting the ongoing provisions of God, not by comparing our suffering to others. The first response after sin entered the world was that Adam and Eve instantaneously went from no-shame nakedness to shame-filled nakedness. Such nakedness caused them to hide themselves from each other, and also hide in fear from God. Loving our neighbour as ourselves means not looking for loopholes in the way we act towards our neighbours, but to live knowing that every part of Scriptures hangs off the commands to love God and love our neighbour. Our mind is our spiritual barometer. To love the Lord with all of our mind means making sure that the “mind” doesn’t simply justify what the heart loves and the will chooses, instead the mind makes the heart and will accountable to the written word. Our heart is the “vital centre” of our being – everything flows from our heart. In order to love God with “all our heart” we need to allow the Gospel to cut to our heart and bring our naturally deceitful heart into alignment with the heart of God. God has a plan for marriage which calls us away from manipulation, guilt-tripping and fear-mongering. In the first century idols were a prevalent and ordinary part of society, and they were a spiritual distraction for Christians. The antichrists are around all the time and many of them are very nice. If they are going to be saved our radically calling is not to be nice Christians, but sacrificially loving Christians. John teaches us how to do this You can read the written sermon here: https://www.sermoncentral.com/sermons/5-the-nice-antichrists-allan-quak-sermon-on-evangelism-248606?ref=SermonSeriesDetails
In Jesus our identity is to be children of God who are mature, or growing in maturity. This identity means that we are incompatible with the world, therefore we cannot love the world.
John encourages his readers to persist in their spiritual walk by confronting them with a social test. Do they love the adelphos (brothers and sisters) or do they hate the adelphos because they stumble and cause others to stumble?
God’s character is that He is light. This light calls all hypocrites to take off their masks and allow the light to reveal the truth.
John starts his letter with a declaration of authority and an invitation to know you have eternal life because you have heard, seen, looked and felt the touch of the Word who was from the beginning.
On Judgement Day the account of each person who ever lived on earth will be revealed and every person will realise that there is no one righteous. Our confidence in that moment comes when we know the name of the Jesus who will name us as his own.
When catastrophe, such as a worldwide pandemic, occurs we are heightened in our end-time awareness. Our sovereign Jesus uses catastrophe to shake us from the rocking rhythm of the ordinary life.
Persecution, and the emotions which come when we think about persecution, do not naturally cause us to feel blessed. Yet, when we stand firm in Jesus who calls us to be the servants who live the persecuted life which the Master lived, we can hold on in strength to Jesus who is sovereign when we are persecuted.
