In this essential episode, Bryan Orr sits down with Elliot, the residential install supervisor at Kalos Services, to unpack a critical issue that's causing confusion among HVAC technicians, electricians, and inspectors alike: the new standards for breaker and conductor sizing on inverter-driven equipment. The conversation was sparked by Elliot's frustrating experience of having two inspectors in the same county fail the same installation for opposite reasons—one for an oversized breaker and another for an undersized breaker. This contradiction led to a deep dive into recent changes in UL standards and how they affect everyday HVAC installations. The heart of the issue stems from the transition to low-GWP refrigerants and the updated UL 60335-2-40 Edition 3 standard, which replaced the 1995 certification approach. This new standard introduced more conservative calculations for electrical characteristics, particularly affecting equipment using A2L refrigerants. The result? Data tags now show higher Minimum Circuit Ampacity (MCA) ratings than before, even though the equipment itself hasn't changed—only the math used to calculate these values has shifted. This has created a puzzling situation where the MCA can be higher than the recommended breaker size, which seems counterintuitive to anyone familiar with traditional electrical principles. Bryan and Elliot clarify the fundamental rule that still applies: size your wire to the MCA and your breaker to the MOCP (Maximum Overcurrent Protector). The confusion arises because manufacturers like Mitsubishi are now including "recommended breaker" sizes on data tags that are lower than the MCA—a courtesy to contractors, not a code requirement. The higher MCA reflects conservative safety margins that account for extreme operating conditions, but in practice, inverter-driven systems have multiple built-in protections that prevent them from ever actually reaching these calculated amperage levels. The key takeaway is that contractors can safely install breakers at the recommended size without safety concerns, as long as the breaker's lugs are rated to accept the wire size required by the MCA. The episode also explores how inverter-driven equipment fundamentally differs from traditional PSC motors, particularly regarding locked rotor amps (now more accurately termed "inverter input") and voltage drop considerations. Unlike conventional motors that simply run slower with reduced voltage, inverter-driven compressors and ECM motors compensate by drawing more current to maintain performance, creating a potential compounding effect with voltage drop that installers need to understand—even though voltage drop itself isn't an enforceable NEC code requirement. Topics Covered: New UL 60335-2-40 Edition 3 standards and their impact on electrical calculations for HVAC equipment The relationship between MCA (Minimum Circuit Ampacity) and MOCP (Maximum Overcurrent Protector) and why they can now seem contradictory Recommended breaker sizes on modern data tags and why they may be lower than the MCA Handling inspector conflicts and failed inspections related to breaker sizing Differences between inverter-driven equipment and traditional PSC motors in electrical behavior The transition from "locked rotor amps" to "inverter input" terminology for modern equipment Voltage drop considerations with inverter-driven systems (NEC 210.19A and 215.2A) Why inverter-driven equipment draws more current at lower voltages compared to traditional motors Proper wire and breaker sizing for A2L refrigerant equipment (454B systems) NEC Section 440 requirements specific to air conditioning and refrigeration equipment Breaker lug ratings and ensuring they can accept the required wire size Practical advice for communicating with inspectors and resolving code disputes Read the tech tip on this topic HERE. We start things off with a bucket and a gritty sponge, with him helping to clean his Dad's yellow Mk1 Escort Mexico. We stay in that car for drives to the South of France, including knocking the exhaust off on the ferry with some frequency. There was a teacher at Barney's school with an RS500 Cosworth, and a sixth former with a Beetle. Naturally, as the CEO of Heritage Parts Centre, we spoke about how Barney got into VWs - it was the Bug Jam coverage on TV, which he saw at school that set the spark inside him. Elsewhere, there's mention of his Nans interest in British sportscars, and how she almost got a Morgan, but by the time her name came up on the waiting list, she was too old to get in and out of it!Find out more about Heritage Parts Centre here: www.heritagepartscentre.com or follow Barney online at www.instagram.com/barneyceoA big thanks to our new podcast sponsor Viking Covers. If you are looking for quality and customizable indoor or outdoor vehicle covers please go check them out. www.vikingcovers.co.ukWe'll be telling you more about these guys soon - stay tuned.Support the showWe'd love you to hear and share your stories, please tag and follow us on social media. www.instagram.com/mydadscar_podcastwww.Facebook.com/mydadscar podcastwww.buymeacoffee.com/mydadscarIf you'd like to support the podcast and are able to, you can ‘buy us a coffee' which will help towards costs of hosting and purchasing equipment to allow us to record guests in person, rather than just on zoom. In this Tax Tuesday episode, Anderson Advisors' Barley Bowler, CPA, and Eliot Thomas, Esq., tackle a wide range of listener questions covering everything from business structures to retirement planning. They discuss the pitfalls of investing in movie production under Section 1801, explain why commuting expenses aren't tax-deductible even for long-distance work arrangements, and clarify the new 1099-NEC reporting thresholds and the upcoming 1099-DA requirements for digital assets. Barley and Eliot break down Section 179 vehicle deductions and the advantages of heavy SUVs over luxury vehicles, explain the reasonable wage requirements and distribution strategies for S corporations, and provide guidance on structuring spec house construction businesses to minimize employment taxes. They also cover mark-to-market elections for traders, the tax consequences of below-market rent to friends or family, and the complications of placing a personal residence in an LLC. Tune in for expert advice on these topics and more! Submit your tax question to taxtuesday@andersonadvisors.com Highlights/Topics: "Any thoughts about investing in movie production for high-income earners?" - Section 1801 expires 2025, creates passive losses, not recommended for most. "I work for a local government agency in Cochise County, Arizona and live in Maricopa County, Arizona, approximately 215 miles apart. I commute in on Monday, stay in a hotel and leave on Thursday. I've been doing this every week since December of 2024. Is there a tax break deduction for this?" - No deduction available; this is considered commuting, not business travel. "Is the new 1099-NEC now starting after $2,500?" - Still $600 for 2025; increases to $2,000 in 2026 only. "Who needs to file this new 1099-DA digital asset form?" - Brokers must send to clients by February 15, 2026. "I'm a sole proprietor and would like to buy a BMW X7 to save the tax based on section 179. Is it covered?" - Yes, if over 6,000 pounds; 100% write-off available first year. "I'd like to know the proper ratio of distribution payments to salary within an S corporation." - One-third to 60% of net income is typical rule of thumb. "Can I pay myself quarterly out of my S corporation LLC?" - Yes, quarterly W-2 payments are acceptable and help avoid penalties. "What's the best way to structure a business to minimize taxes when building spec houses? I do the majority of the work on the houses, so it looks like a lot of profit on my labor, which is not good. I'm currently structured as a pass through LLC and purchase the house lots in a different LLC from my construction LLC." - Use S corporation for labor; sell land separately at capital gains rate. "Is it too late for a mark to market election for 2026?" - No, must file on 2025 return by April 15, 2026. "Is mark to market a good tax deduction?" - Only if trader status qualifies; creates ordinary losses on unrealized gains. "I'm renting to a friend for $300 a month. Fair market rent would be over $1,500. Any tax consequences?" - Deductions limited to income received; cannot create rental loss at all. "How can I have an LLC for my personal residence if the house is the residence of both my son and I as joint tenants?" - Possible but risks losing section 121 exclusion and homestead exemption. In fact, in this episode, we talk about a few examples where a contractor lied to a customer and how that very act can give the profession a bad name. Send us a textDr. Shalini Ojha, Professor of Neonatal Medicine at University of Nottingham, presents the Feed One trial examining full enteral feeding (60 mL/kg/day) from day one versus gradual advancement in 30-32 week infants. While the primary outcome of hospital length of stay showed no difference (median 32 days), full feeding significantly reduced parenteral nutrition use, IV cannulations, and associated interventions without increasing necrotizing enterocolitis risk (4 versus 6 cases). This pragmatic trial challenges the unfounded fear that early full feeding causes NEC—demonstrating that moderate preterm infants can safely receive complete enteral nutrition from birth, simplifying care particularly in resource-limited settings while avoiding complications from IV access and parenteral nutrition. Send us a textDr. Matthew Laughon, Professor at University of North Carolina and NICHD Neonatal Research Network investigator, presents the landmark PDA Management Trial comparing expectant management versus active medical treatment (indomethacin, ibuprofen, or acetaminophen). The trial stopped early due to futility and safety concerns—mortality exceeded 10% in the treatment group versus 4% with expectant management, with more infection-related deaths among treated infants. Secondary outcomes (BPD, NEC, ROP) showed no differences. The study included infants with symptomatic PDAs but excluded those with severe cardiopulmonary compromise. Findings support expectant management for symptomatic PDAs through 21 days of life, aligning with recent guidelines recommending no routine treatment in the first two weeks. It began in the 1970s, with rumors rumbling from the outskirts of the American technology giant, IBM. A new chip architecture capable of revolutionary processing speeds. It was called RISC. The RISC Wars were fought over nearly 20 years, with the most intensive battles in the late 1980s and early 1990s. At its peak, it involved a mix of young chip upstarts and old giants across the world throwing around benchmark results. Sun Microsystems. MIPS Computer. PA-RISC. IBM. PowerPC. DEC Alpha. Fujitsu and NEC in Japan. Siemens and Philips in Europe. And of course, looming over them all: Intel and the burgeoning Wintel Death Machine. It was a time of shifting alliances, leaps of inspiration, wild technical claims, and the Iron Fist of Intel. Today, we delve into legends of the RISC Wars.
