Factors affecting infant gut microbiota development, with Prof. Christopher Stewart PhD

This episode features Prof. Christopher Stewart PhD from Newcastle University (UK), speaking about the factors affecting gut microbiota development in both non-preterm and preterm infants. Prof. Stewart started in the field of environmental microbial ecology and then came to work in human microbiome research. He was involved in the landmark TEDDY study, which aimed to find gut microbial markers of type 1 diabetes (T1D). Although no microbial triggers of T1D were identified, the study found a number of factors that impact gut microbiome development: for example, sex, geographical location, and living with furry animals. Still, most of the variation seen in the infant gut microbiota remains unaccounted for. He noted that infants are exposed to both vaginal and gastrointestinal microorganisms during vaginal birth. In C-section-born infants, seeding of the maternal vaginal and gut microbiota may be promising, but current methods are imprecise and safety has not been established. Furthermore, diet takes over as a primary driver of gut microbiota a few weeks after birth. Prof. Stewart talked about human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs), well known to be utilized by bifidobacteria in the infant gut. His lab recently published the surprising finding that Clostridium species can also utilize HMOs – and while at first this was thought to be detrimental for the infant, further investigation showed that the HMO-utilizing Clostridium may lack the genes for producing specific toxins and end up being protective for the infant gut. Together, the microbial community in the gut may use the full suite of HMO substrates reaching the infant gut. Preterm infants are a population that needs more attention. Antibiotics affect their gut microbiomes – often in a negative way, but for the overall benefit of the baby. His lab is currently funded to study how probiotics affect the preterm infant gut microbiota, and to find strategies for more personalized approaches to administering probiotics in this population. Episode abbreviations and links: TEDDY study, revealing factors affecting gut microbiota development between 3 and 46 months of age: Temporal development of the gut microbiome in early childhood from the TEDDY study Study on how Clostridium species utilize HMOs: Clostridia from preterm infants metabolize human milk oligosaccharides to suppress pathobionts and modulate intestinal function in organoids Study on how NEC risk is linked with HMOs: Human milk oligosaccharide DSLNT and gut microbiome in preterm infants predicts necrotising enterocolitis Publication on how probiotics impact the gut microbiota in preterm infants: Strain-specific impacts of probiotics are a significant driver of gut microbiome development in very preterm infants Some similar results have come from the CHILD Cohort Study, described here Find Prof. Stewart on LinkedIn, and learn more about his research on this website About Prof. Christopher Stewart: Professor Christopher Stewart is an internationally recognised leader in human microbiome research. He earned his PhD in Microbial Ecology from Northumbria University (UK), followed by postdoctoral training at Baylor College of Medicine (Houston, Texas), before establishing his research group at Newcastle University in 2018. Today's guest is Robert Cheatham https://www.linkedin.com/in/rcheetham/ and we are talking about Japan Earth Observer, https://www.japanearthobserver.com/. This is a newsletter on the space, Earth observation, and geospatial industry in Japan. It is based on a fantastic effort by Robert to systematically collate every last company in the space and earth observation supply chain in that country. Naturally I was drawn to it due to my efforts to do this not only for Japan but every country in the world as the GEO500. We got in touch and exchanged our lists which led to the discussion recorded here today. The GEO500 has 56 Japanese companies since inception. 7 of them are delisted. So the index contains 49 live positions for this country. All GEO500 positions start with $100. The entire Japanese part of the GEO500 stands at $AUD13,000. This is because the 56 have compounded at 8% annually since inception. In the case of this country, starting as a position in Fujitsu in 2000. The top three performers in terms of capital growth rate are Terra Drone (125% annually), Synspective (71%) and QPS (59%). The top 3 in terms of value are Sony ($1100 - bear in mind the $100 starting position, equating to a 20% annual growth rate since entering the index in 2013), NEC ($960, 10%) and Raito Kogyo ($760, 11%). Note that the 3 fastest growers are all earth observation companies, and 2 of those are synthetic aperture radar satellite constellations. This is an exciting part of our industry to watch and I have recorded a couple of great episodes on the power of it. For example, - Jamon Van Den Hoek's work as an academic partnering with some of the world's largest media organisations to monitor building destruction in warzones and after fires: https://open.spotify.com/episode/0RQNjzDtTQTNqv8IiMy2SU- Umbra, a pioneering American SAR satellite manufacturer, they also operate their own constellation: https://open.spotify.com/episode/2QM3OeglXI1naiSgrKod17- Iceye, the equivalent from Finland: https://open.spotify.com/episode/04S3fsdL4cus2tOEbq4KBN- Ursa Space Systems, a commodity intelligence firm that uses SAR to monitor everything from iron ore stockpiles at ports to oil farm tank lids around the world: https://open.spotify.com/episode/3ltO0Bv8Mtq7dgnLhXWGxO- SeerAI, another analytical platform where I coaxed the guest to use SAR as a way to detect surface change on the NEOM excavation, the world's largest (now abandoned) building site: https://www.geospatial.fm/p/seerai-responds-to-johnny-harrisBut this wasn't just about current companies. We were privileged in this episode to be given a history of Japan's trading houses since the 1860s to today. This led to several insights around the longevity, for example, of the social groups that comprise such firms and how they can persist even through a trust busting effort by the winning country after a world war. Another insight was the benefit to society of trust busting and how it unleashed a wave of new companies and from that household names such as Honda and Sony. Honda recently launched a rocket that was able to land itself. This has relevance to possible future earth observation constellation launches. Sony released LiDAR solution in 2013 and also sells other geospatial products like a GNSS chip. We have come full circle.A final note about Robert himself. We are presented here with a cultivated and successful entrepreneur. He grew a geospatial software development firm to 50 people then sold it. He has learnt a foreign language well enough to spontaneously translate things for me during a podcast recording without warning. He also is able to offer a comprehensive historical view on the emergence, development, setbacks and modern day expression of several dominant companies in a vibrant foreign economy, Japan. He shows us the way, then, on multiple fronts. I am grateful for the chance to put an inspiring industry figure in front of you today. Thanks Robert.

Back in Scotland, the Peter Murrell narrative has been laid out, leaving many in the Yes movement feeling directionless. We look at the abject failure of governance within the SNP. We also compare the well-maintained, cycle-friendly infrastructure of the Netherlands with the sad state of Edinburgh Airport's rolled-up corrugated paper door wedges.Operation Hingaboot Mark II: A large crowd gathered outside Holyrood for the Section 30 request vote. We discuss the ongoing disconnect between the SNP corporate leadership and the grassroots Yes movementPeter Murrell and SNP Governance: Following Peter Murrell's guilty plea, we unpack the agreed narrative of financial mismanagement. We examine the culture of deference that allowed £12,500 of Apple products and a £3,500 silver wine coaster to be coded without curiosity, and how those who tried to raise concerns—like the "Good Guys" slate on the NEC and members of the Finance and Audit Committee—were sidelined and frustrated.Labour's Leaks and Leadership: The latest document dump reveals damning WhatsApp connections between Peter Mandelson and Pat McFadden, who seems to lament the idea of taxing to pay benefits. NEC SocietyTN NEC Day and Month RecognitionKey TakeawaysParents should actively embrace their role in the NICU care team by learning about medical equipment, medications, and their baby's cues, as this engagement transforms the experience from passive observation to active advocacy and parenthood.Healthcare providers should intentionally invite parents into caregiving tasks—changing diapers, learning procedures, receiving updates—to reduce intimidation and help families feel like parents rather than bystanders during neonatal care.Small acts of kindness from medical staff—personalized notes, thoughtful gestures, reassurance—significantly impact family experiences during crisis and can create lasting positive memories even in the context of tragic outcomes.NEC (necrotizing enterocolitis) remains a poorly understood complication among the general public and many parents; awareness, education, and advocacy are critical tools for prevention, early detection, and support for affected families.Grief can be transformed into meaningful advocacy and legacy work; turning personal tragedy into systemic change honors the brief life of a lost child and prevents future families from experiencing the same confusion and loss.Quotable Moments"I just didn't know. But you don't know until you know that not every pregnancy ends the way that you hope.""He's alive, he's alive, he's in the NICU and he's doing okay.""I think getting to hold him the first time was when you really feel like a parent.""Embrace the intimidation as quickly as you possibly can. Embrace the NICU life as quickly and possibly as you can. Because we're still a parent. It's just a non-traditional way of parenthood starting.""I never wanted another family to feel as confused as we did when we heard how he died and we didn't know what it was.""It brought so much joy to know that my son's life had an impact on a state."Show Notes by Barevalue. No content or comments made in any TIPQC Healthy Mom Healthy Baby Podcast is intended to be comprehensive or medical advice. This short podcast is from the Bry-X stage of the 7th Annual HVACR Training Symposium: Cheryl Klein's "Surge Protection for HVAC." Cheryl is with DITEK, a veteran-owned company based in Florida, and has extensive knowledge of whole-home surge protection and HVAC-specific surge protectors. HVAC systems may have their lifespans reduced by power surges (tens of thousands of volts within microseconds) or sustained overvoltage. Surge protectors specifically protect the equipment from power surges, though DITEK manufactures products that help manage sustained overvoltage (and undervoltage, which surge protectors CANNOT protect against). Nearby lightning strikes and high voltage from the utility company (especially after undervoltage) are common causes of surges. Everyone in the country has risks of power surges, but some areas are exceptionally high-risk, whether due to utility causes or climate (lightning storms). Degradation is the invisible damage that occurs over time with repeated surges. Destruction can be associated with a specific event, like a direct lightning strike or a blown transformer. Surge protection helps with both; when a surge comes through, the surge protector directs the surge to ground instead of your HVAC equipment. DITEK uses thermally protected MOVs (TPMOVs) to redirect the surge; TPMOVs react to surges and change from a low-impedance state to a high-impedance state, effectively pointing the surges to ground, and only a clamped voltage makes it to the HVAC equipment. However, surge protectors will degrade with each event; DITEK's surge protectors have LEDs indicating their health. NEC 2020 requires surge protection on all dwellings, so many homeowners have whole-home surge protection already installed. Surge protection on the HVAC unit can still be added as an extra layer, which provides better protection for the HVAC system specifically. HVAC surge protection works at the condenser. DITEK's KoolGuard2 (KG2) is a voltage monitor that works on single-phase equipment under 40 continuous amps. It cuts power if the power exceeds or dips too far below the typical voltage, and then it restores power after three minutes. It also does not require programming, but it has a few best practices, such as reducing lead length to improve the clamping voltage and keeping protected and unprotected wires in separate conduits. Ground must also be within code have low enough impedance to redirect the surges effectively; the resistance can only be measured properly with a megohmmeter or clamp meter. DITEK also has three-phase surge protection for commercial equipment and has options for BAS systems.   Learn more about DITEK's products and DITEK University at https://www.diteksurgeprotection.com/.  Have a question that you want us to answer on the podcast? A union electrician with zero coding experience built an AI tool that's stopping EV owners from getting upsold thousands of dollars in unnecessary panel upgrades - and then Mark Cuban reshared his post.In this episode, ChargeRight founder Jason Walls joins us to share how 15+ years pulling wire in Kentucky led him to build an app that puts the NEC code book directly in homeowners' hands for $12.99 - replacing $300 truck rolls and $3,000–$6,000 panel upgrade quotes. The conversation covers Jason's path from automating job site paperwork to building a full product with Claude, the moment a Mark Cuban reshare hit 800,000 views, and how he's expanding ChargeRight into a broader product suite called RightSuite (Inspect Right, Spa Right, and more). We also dig into the trades-vs-AI narrative, why Jason isn't trying to raise venture capital, and how he learned to code by mapping git and repos onto motor control circuits and smart switches.Jason's story is what AI-era entrepreneurship actually looks like outside Silicon Valley - domain expertise plus the right tools, built by a guy who's still going to work every morning.Hosted by Logan JonesMiddle Tech is proudly supported by:KY Innovation → kyinnovation.comAwesome Inc → awesomeinc.org

Send us Fan MailDr. Arpitha Chiruvolu, neonatologist and infant nutrition researcher, joins Ben to share three posters from this year's PAS covering two of her core research interests. She presents pilot data on using Prolacta human milk cream as an alternative to dextrose gel for treating asymptomatic neonatal hypoglycemia — highlighting the well-known limitations of dextrose gel including inconsistent dosing, poor tolerance, and the way it interferes with breastfeeding immediately after administration. In 25 babies treated with cream, blood glucose rose from a median of 36 to 56 mg/dL, only one baby required NICU admission, and nurses and families loved it. She also shares her center's experience with probiotics in extremely low birth weight infants — where NEC rates dropped significantly with no cases of probiotic sepsis — and raises the urgent question of what is happening to NEC rates now that probiotics have been pulled from use in the US.Support the showAs always, feel free to send us questions, comments, or suggestions to our email: nicupodcast@gmail.com. Send us Fan MailDr. Indrani Bhattacharjee, neonatologist and POCUS program director at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, joins Ben to discuss a fascinating and largely unexplored frontier — intestinal ultrasound in healthy preterm infants. Rather than waiting for NEC to appear, her team has been systematically scanning babies born under 32 weeks every week from one week of age until eight weeks or discharge, building what may be the first normative dataset for bowel wall thickness in this population. Early findings are already challenging the standard radiological definitions, showing that extremely preterm babies have thinner bowel walls than current benchmarks would classify as normal — raising the question of whether definitions derived from term or older patients have ever been appropriate for our tiniest babies. The publication is forthcoming in the European Journal of Pediatrics.Support the showAs always, feel free to send us questions, comments, or suggestions to our email: nicupodcast@gmail.com.
