Understanding Voltage Drop - Short #251

HVAC School - For Techs, By Techs

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 5, 2025 17:15

In this short podcast episode, Bryan drops some knowledge to help with understanding voltage drop, a few different causes of it, and NEC recommendations. Voltage is electrical potential or "pressure," and voltage drop is the reduction in electrical potential energy. We often think of it happening across conductors (which add resistance), but it also happens across loads (like contactor coils). Voltage drop across loads is usually designed, but voltage drop across conductors is usually undesigned and undesirable.  Several factors contribute to conductor resistance. Length is a major one; long runs of wire introduce more resistance to the circuit than shorter runs. Size/gauge also matters; smaller-gauge wire has more resistance than larger-gauge wire. Copper is the most common material for wiring, but we use other materials (including steel or aluminum), and those have different resistance values. Temperature also affects resistance, as they both increase and decrease as the other one does.  When we measure voltage drop, we want to make sure we're doing it under load, NOT on startup. Voltage drops that happen on startup can be mitigated with more suitable infrastructure (including larger wires) or soft starts.  Undersized conductors don't have sufficient cross-sectional area for the applied load. To avoid voltage drop due to undersized conductors, we should size conductors based on minimum circuit ampacity (MCA), not breaker size (MOCP). Poor connections can also cause resistance to jump, which reduces voltage; we need to pay attention to the connection design (including torque specs and proper lugging) to avoid making mistakes. Long wires don't cause overheating by themselves, but they still contribute to voltage drop and cause reduced performance (including drawing higher current on startup).   Have a question that you want us to answer on the podcast? We talk about the fox guarding the hen house of formula testing, the 626 NEC lawsuits filed against major manufacturer Abbott, RFK Jr.'s murky ties to the formula industry, and how social media marketing has become the newest weapon against maternal instinct. This conversation isn't about shame. It's about power: power in knowledge, power in truth, and power in numbers. It's time to reclaim motherhood from corporate capture. Get involved with RMU if mobilizing mothers to advocate for change makes you excited!

What if one conversation could completely change how you advocate for your baby in the NICU? In this episode of the Empowering NICU Parents Podcast, NICU mom and Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, Nicole Nyberg is joined by Dr. Melinda Elliott, neonatologist and Chief Medical Officer at Prolacta Bioscience. Together, they dive deep into the emotional and clinical realities of life in the NICU—highlighting the critical role that parents play in their baby's care from day one. You'll hear powerful insight on why skin-to-skin contact is far more than a comfort measure, how to ask the right questions about your baby's feeding plan, and why human milk-based fortifiers can be a game changer in preventing serious complications like NEC. And here's something every NICU parent needs to know: just because something is called a “human milk fortifier” doesn't mean it's made from human milk. That's why it's essential to ask what your baby is truly being fed—and why it matters. Whether you're a NICU parent navigating the unknown or a clinician committed to improving outcomes, this conversation will leave you feeling informed, supported, and inspired to take action. In the latest Sunday Show on BizNews, Neil De Beer, the President of the United Independent Movement, and journalist Chris Steyn talk about the latest political drama. De Beer charges that South Africa is in pseudo undercover dictatorship - despite the African National Congress (ANC) being “in ICU”. He comments on all the options ranging from a Vote of No Confidence in President Cyril Ramaphosa to Democratic Alliance (DA) Federal Chair Helen Zille dropping either the nuclear bomb or atom bomb “which she says she holds”. He weighs the strengths of the factions in the ANC and says, in the last NEC, there was such a stand-off between President Cyril Ramaphosa and SG Fikile Mbalula over the party staying in the GNU that rumour has it that the president actually got up and left. Meanwhile, word on the street has it that Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi is losing popularity. As for future elections, De Beer warns: “The ANC has an attitude with its gatherings, its giving of Kentucky, its giving of the T-shirt and the cap, and it wins those logistics every time. And until the DA and all of us don't get it that we've got to fight fire with fire, we will never get that power change in this country.” Turning to “murder by power', De Beer laments the assassination of the Ekhurhuleni Audit Chief, as well as the alleged involvement of Special Forces soldiers in a “hitsquad unit to kidnap and take people out”.

Foundations of Amateur Radio Recently I was helping a friend erect their newly refurbished multi-band antenna and during the process we discussed the notion of tuning an antenna that's high in the air. They made a curious response, in that they'd tuned the antenna on the ground before we started. I asked how this would work, since as I understand the process, this changes things once it gets in the air. They assured me that while the actual SWR might change, the frequencies at which it was resonant would not. This was news to me because I've been putting off erecting my own multi-band 6BTV antenna mainly because I didn't really want to face having to erect it, tune it, lower it, modify the elements, erect it, tune it, etc., all whilst standing on the steel roof of my patio. Would this phenomenon be true for my antenna? It occurred to me that I could test this idea, not only for my antenna, but for other antennas as well. In my minds-eye, I saw a video displaying the pertinent attributes of an antenna, SWR, gain, radiation pattern, and whatever else I could think of, animated with the modifications of things like height and ground radials. If this sounds familiar in some way, it's because I've been here before. This time the outcome was slightly different, since I found a tool that can optimise antennas using a genetic algorithm. What I mean by that is an automated process where you can test variations of a thing, in this case antennas. Rather than design each antenna and test it, you essentially generate antenna designs and tweak them to determine the best one. Then you use that to generate the next series of designs. Rinse and repeat until you have what you're looking for. There's a whole field of computer science dedicated to this and unsurprisingly the rabbit hole goes deep. The tool is called "xnec2c-gao" and it's written by Maurizio DC1MDP. The name of the tool hints at its nature, working in combination with "xnec2c", written by Neoklis 5B4AZ and maintained by Eric KJ7LNW, you'll find links to both tools on the xnec2c.org website. How the two tools work together is a beautiful dance. The antenna modelling tool, xnec2c, can read an antenna definition file and detect if it changes, at which point it can redo the simulation, which it can output to another file. The genetic algorithm optimisation tool, xnec2c-gao, can detect the changed output and update the antenna definition file, and the process repeats. Which brings me to a pro-tip, for this to work, you need to configure xnec2c to do two things, detect the changed definition file, and write the output to CSV, both of these options can be found in the "Optimization Settings" menu, just so you don't spend an hour banging your head against the desk. Between the two tools, the antenna definition evolves and you end up with a design optimised for your purpose. The default does this for SWR and gain. Mind you, I tested a multi-band dipole which managed to find some interesting designs, but didn't pick them because a low SWR combined with a high gain, for reason't I don't yet understand, wasn't considered better than a high SWR with a high gain, so there's some work to be done. As a software developer I have a sneaking suspicion that it's adding the two, rather than picking the highest gain combined with the lowest SWR, but I haven't confirmed that. As I said, deep rabbit hole. While we're not yet at the video display stage, for the first time I can get a sense that this might come to pass. There's plenty of work to be done. For example, the antenna display on xnec2c during the process seems broken, there's no way to output gnuplot files during the process, and capturing the various charts in real-time will require work, but all that seems if not easy, at least possible. Meanwhile, I'm attempting to locate an antenna definition file, preferably in .NEC format for my 6BTV antenna, so I can use this combination of tools to discover if tuning it on the ground will work and while I'm at it, discover if the installation I'm working on will give me something worthwhile. I realise that this is well beyond "try it and see", but my body isn't up to climbing up and down ladders 17 times in a day and I think that getting a feel for what might occur is a good way to learn. When was the last time you climbed on a roof and what did you do to avoid it? I'm Onno VK6FLAB

Send us a textAs Mercyhurst University makes its ambitious leap into NCAA Division I men's lacrosse, one name to watch between the pipes is sophomore goalie Jaret Jawor.A native of Lockport, Illinois, Jawor played his high school lacrosse at Wheaton Academy, where he developed into a strong and athletic netminder. Now standing at 6-foot-3, Jawor brings size, reach, and a calming presence to the crease—traits that are quickly turning heads in his second collegiate season.Jawor made his college debut in 2024, seeing time in six games as a freshman. He made 21 saves while posting a 6.95 goals-against average and an impressive .618 save percentage, finishing the season with a 1–0 record. His early showings hinted at potential, and in 2025, that potential has started to materialize. This season, Jawor has stepped into a more active role, appearing in five games and making one start. Across 143 minutes of action, he's registered:38 saves36 goals against15.06 GAA.514 save percentage1–1 overall recordBut the numbers only tell part of the story. In NEC conference play, Jawor has stepped up under pressure, delivering a .571 save percentage across two appearances—highlighted by a standout 19-save performance against Robert Morris. Though the Lakers didn't secure the win, Jawor's poise and shot-stopping ability stood out in a hard-fought matchup. The 2025 season is a landmark one for Mercyhurst. After years of dominance at the Division II level, the Lakers have entered the Division I stage with a youthful roster, a new head coach in Trey Keeley, and something to prove. While postseason eligibility will have to wait, performances from players like Jawor have helped Mercyhurst secure key wins—most notably a dominant 22–6 victory over Hampton. As Mercyhurst builds its foundation in Division I, Jaret Jawor is emerging as a core piece of that future.
