Pastor Matt wrapped up the church's "I AM" series by reviewing how Jesus revealed His divine identity through seven statements in the Gospel of John. Each statementāBread of Life, Light of the World, Door, Good Shepherd, Resurrection and Life, Way, Truth and Life, and True Vineāoffers a unique invitation to relationship, collectively inviting us back into relationship with God through Christ. The sermon emphasized that discipleship isn't a tiered system but the natural state of every follower of Jesus, who should be "following Jesus, being changed by Jesus, and committed to the mission of Jesus." Pastor Matt then launched our annual Christmas offering campaign with a goal of $155,000, supporting local partners like Union Gospel Mission, national church planting efforts, global missions, and campus ministries. This 11-week generosity initiative aligns with Jesus' final command in Acts 1:8 to be witnesses "in Jerusalem and all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth," while also supporting Vision 2028āthe plan to start a new work by our 50th anniversary.

The True Vine's Comfort, Part 3Oliver Jones
The Everyday Bible Study | November 12 | I Am the True Vine
In this sermon, Pastor Brian explores Jesus's declaration "I am the true vine" from John 15, delivered during His final hours with the disciples before the crucifixion. Pastor Brian explains that in ancient Jewish culture, the grapevine symbolized Israel, but Jesus now claims to be the "true vine," indicating that what Israel failed to accomplish as God's chosen people is fulfilled in Him. The Father serves as the vinedresser who both removes unfruitful branches and prunes fruitful ones for greater productivity. Pastor Brian emphasizes that the key to spiritual life and fruitfulness is abiding in Christ, comparing it to his own 25-year marriage where "not getting divorced" is fundamental but insufficient for a thriving relationship. Similarly, believers must actively abide in Jesus through Bible reading, prayer, obedience, and sharing their faith. The fruit of this abiding includes transformed character (the fruit of the Spirit), worship, and spiritual reproductionāmaking new disciples. Pastor Brian concludes with an invitation for non-believers to be grafted into the vine, for wayward believers to return to abiding, and for faithful believers to express gratitude for Christ's sacrifice.

Love and Torahāwhat's the link? This series focuses on the āTwo Great Commands"āloving Yahweh and your neighbor. While many groups claim to believe in the Creator and His Messiah, they often hold differing views. Everyone agrees love is vital, but what does it look like in practice? What actions does it involve? In this series, Love & Torah, Rabbi Steve Berkson offers straightforward biblical insights into these questions. After finishing his study of Psalm 119, which highlights loving Elohim, Rabbi Berkson now turns to how to love others. The Gospel of John, chapter 15, serves as an ideal starting point, as Messiah Yeshua uses agricultural metaphors to teach His disciples about the relationship He desires among believers. ⢠What is the āgapā between the Gardener and the Vine? ⢠What does pruning mean? How does it relate to you? ⢠If Messiah Yeshua calls Himself the āTrue Vine," could there be false vines? ⢠Why did Messiah Yeshua say, āStay in Me"? ⢠Why does verse 15:3 mention being clean because of the Word? ⢠What is a direct download from the Ruach? ⢠Do you need to pray before doing anything? ⢠What is āVertical Awarenessā? Rabbi Berkson once again analyzes these passages in detail, helping you gain a deeper understanding of what Yah expects and how you can fulfill it to receive blessings. In this episode of Root Issues, we have a special guest, Pastor Chris, and we dive deep into John chapter 15, one of the most powerful passages from Jesus' farewell discourse to His disciples. Recorded just before His crucifixion, this chapter gives us Jesus' famous metaphor of the vine and branchesāa vivid illustration of what it means to remain connected to Christ and bear lasting spiritual fruit.āWe'll explore the profound relationship between Jesus (the true vine), the Father (the vinedresser), and believers (the branches), unpacking what it truly means to "abide" in Christ. From there, we examine Jesus' radical commandment to love one another and His declaration that "greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for his friends" (John 15:13).
In Pastor Gary's recent sermon, he explored the profound statements made by Jesus Christ, with a particular focus on the declaration, "I am the true vine." Pastor Gary elaborated on how these words, spoken in a world often characterized by haste and superficiality, carry profound and lasting implications. He explained that the vine symbolizes a connection to divine sustenance and truth, unlike the hollow substitutes the world might offer. With great conviction, Pastor Gary emphasized the unique and fearless nature of Jesus' statement, highlighting His divinity and the unmatched love and sacrifice inherent in His life and mission.

Afflictions I hear have been your lot; and if I had not heard so, I should have taken it for granted: for I believe the Lord loves you, and as many as He loves He chastens.I think you can say, afflictions have been good for you, and I doubt not but you have found strength according to your day; so that, though you may have been sharply tried, you have not been overpowered.'" -Newton, Amazing Works, 156-57True disciples abide or remain connected to Jesus. Ex. Like a branch drawing life-giving sap from the vine is essential to life and fruit-bearing.āHere Jesus introduced that rich word abide, which has to do with remaining close to Him. Jesus declared that our productivity, our fruitfulness, is directly linked to our abiding in Him. As Christians, we will bear fruit, but it will vary in degree. "My words remain in you" (7)Jesus speaks through his word. God prunes and cleans through his word (3).We respond in prayer. Where there is prayer, there are answers. God listens to his people. It looks like breathing. "When the Holy Spirit is pulsing through you, you pray without thinking. You just talk to God." -CarterPrayer is as important to the soul as breathing to the body.B. Obedient love--we obey because we love. Our love flows from our obedience. Obedience is the evidence of love.A persistently, willfully, disobedient person is not a Christian. What's cool here is that even though Jesus is our King and has every right to demand our obedience, he doesn't treat us like slaves. He sees us as friends. Slaves are given commands without explanation. Jesus invites us into his inner circle. He shares his friendship and explains what he's doing. Not always as much as we'd like but he tells us what the Father says to him. (14-15)C. Inexhaustible joy--Jesus, who fills our Dixie cup/cone cup with joy, immerses our Dixie cup of joy into his ocean of joy.Happiness is dependent on your circumstances. Joy transcends your circumstances.ExamplesPaul in Prison (Philippians 1:12ā21; 4:4)Happiness: No one would be happy about being chained up, falsely accused, and awaiting trial. His circumstances were bleak.Joy: Paul still wrote, āRejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoiceā (Phil. 4:4). His joy was rooted in Christ being proclaimed and in knowing that āto live is Christ, and to die is gain.ā His joy transcended his imprisonment. The Apostles Beaten (Acts 5:40ā42)Happiness: After being flogged by the Sanhedrin, they weren't happy about the pain or humiliation.Joy: They ārejoiced that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name.ā Joy came from sharing in Christ's sufferings and being faithful witnesses.Jesus on the Cross (Hebrews 12:2)Happiness: The cross was excruciating, shameful, and horrificānothing about it was happy.Joy: Yet Hebrews says Jesus endured it āfor the joy set before himāāthe joy of redeeming us, glorifying the Father, and sitting down at His right hand.Job LossHappiness: Losing your job doesn't make you happy. The stress, loss of income, and uncertainty feel heavy.Joy: A believer can still have joy by trusting God's provision, remembering His past faithfulness, and resting in His promises. Joy looks like saying, āThis is hard, but I know God is still with me and will provide,ā even while updating your rĆ©sumĆ©.It's no coincidence that Jesus follows, "If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love" (10) with, "I have told you this so that my joy may be in your and that your joy may be complete." In this message, Rooted, we explore what it means to stay firmly grounded in Jesus every day. Ā Anchor Verse ā Colossians 2:6-7 āTherefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.ā Ā 1. The Importance of Being Rooted ā Christ dwelling in our hearts gives us stability (Ephesians 3:17). 2. Growth Through Connection ā Abiding in the True Vine is the only way to bear lasting fruit (John 15:5). 3. Strength in Faith ā Our confidence comes from His power, not our own (Philippians 4:13). 4. Gratitude as a Response ā A rooted life overflows with thanksgiving (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Ā Watch now to discover how to deepen your roots in Christ, grow strong through connection, and live a life filled with gratitude and strength.
Sunday after the Exultation of the Cross Galatians 2:16-20; St. Mark 8:34-9:1 On the Sunday after the Exaltation of the Cross, Fr. Anthony reflects on Christ's call to ātake up your cross and follow Me.ā Drawing on the imagery of military service, he shows how the Christian life demands selfless duty, not comfort, as we bear the Cross in love rather than mere suffering. He contrasts the marketer's dream of the radiant sun with the scandal of the Cross, explaining why the Church, in wisdom, sets the Crossānot the Sunāas its banner. In Christ, the Cross becomes not a sign of death, but the Tree of Life that transforms our pain into victory and joy. ___ Homily: the Cross and the SunThe Sunday after the Exaltation of the Cross āTake up your cross and follow meā There are many ways to understand this command. Many take it as God's way of saying we need to put up with all the sufferings that our bodies give us.Ā That's true, but there's more to it that. I want to use the example of the soldier to explain how.Ā In the army, we would sing as we walked. It made the time go by more quickly, developed camaraderie, and taught us some valuable life lessons. One of the most popular went like this: 82nd patch on my shoulder, pick up your chutes and follow me, Airborne infantry, 10th Mountain patch on my shoulder, pick up your rucks and follow me, Mountain Infantry. That is what comes into mind every time I hear; ātake up your cross and follow meā. The new verse might go something like this; Christ the Saviour patch on my shoulder pick up your cross and follow me, Christian infantry. Why is this useful? Think about it: what are these things that the soldiers are picking up? Why do they pick them up?Ā They use these things to battle the nation's enemies.Ā They use these things to protect their families and keep their nation safe.Ā Most of all, these things are used in selfless service and duty for something other than themselves. Why do we pick up the cross? For the same reason. Selfless service and duty for something other than ourselves. Is there suffering involved?Ā Yes. Soldiers suffer. But it's not about the suffering, it's about the love (call it duty, that's fine).Ā Yes. Christ suffered. But it's not about the suffering; its about the love. Is there suffering involved for us? Yes. But we don't count it as suffering. It is just the cost of doing what is right. The Cross: A marketer's nightmare Have you ever thought about the implications of having the Cross as our standard? Ā It isn't the kind of thing that a marketing team would come up with.Ā After all, who would market their product by saying, āTry this ā it will cause a lot of pain!āĀ Marketers would have chosen the wonderful image of the Sun: it gives warmth, allows things to grow, and makes it so that we can see things as they really are. Ā Plus, in English at least, it is a homophone for āthe Sonā, so putting the āSun of Righteousnessā on our shields and chests could still be a witness of our reverence for Christ, our King and God. The Sun of Righteousness People love the sun. Ā I probably took it for granted growing up in the south, but after living in New England and other parts of the North for most of my adult life, I love and appreciate it even more now. Ā A sunrise after a long and difficult night gives new hope; a warm sun after a trying winter brings new life to tired bones. Ā Another tie-in that would make this a shoe-in for the marketing team is that we orient our churches to the East so that we can await the coming of the Messiah ā again, the āSun of Righteousnessā. Ā The sun is such a huge part of our human subconscious, and it resonates with our Christian theology ā surely it would be a better advertisement of the healing and resurrection power of the Church than a cross! Think about it!Ā The cross is the opposite of the sun. Ā The sun builds up life, the cross destroys it. Ā The sun gives comfort and warmth, the cross brings pain. Ā Everyone recognizes the value of the sun; the only ones who value the cross are tyrants and psychopaths ā and they certainly don't want it for themselves. Ā The marketers wring their hands, wondering who could possibly be attracted by such a symbol! The Logic of the Cross of Christ So why the cross? Ā I have told you before that when the Orthodox Church reveals something to me that doesn't make sense, I rejoice because it means I am about to learn something new and grow as a Christian. [Leave aside the fact that non-human representations of Christ are problematic, e.g. the 82nd Canon of the Council of Trulloā¦] The Sun might have been the perfect emblem for us if we had not broken our covenant with God in the Garden of Eden. Ā Just as plants in the well-tended garden mature upwards towards the rays of the Sun, we were made to grow naturally towards the goodness emanating from the Christ. Ā Take a look sometime at the iconography from Genesis, chapter one. Ā There is a series by Michael Kapeluk available from the Ancient Faith Store, but the originals are in the chapel of St. Thomas at All Saints Camp in Northwestern PA, one of the most beautiful and peaceful places on God's green earth. Ā Those icons provide a literal depiction of Christ in human form, bringing all the forms of creation into being (we recite this truth in the Creed every day; Christ is the one āthrough whom all things were madeā). Ā Had we not chosen to grow according to our own will instead [a will that has become increasingly warped], we would have grown toward Christ from blameless simplicity into perfection, moving from blessing to blessing for all eternity. Ā So, to reiterate, the sun might have been a useful image for Christian theosis had we never fallen. This idea [of the Sun as our banner] is still attractive to us now because we want to pretend that the love God has for us is strong enough to grow us into joyful perfection all on its own. Ā We want to pretend as if we have no flaws that access to better sun and soil could not overcome. Ā The problem is, to continue the agricultural metaphor in the same way Jesus often did, [the problem is] that our roots are ruined. Ā They can grow nothing but nettles and weeds. Ā Without correcting the fatal flaws inherent within us, better soil and sunlight will only make for a bigger patch of poison ivy ā it cannot turn that ivy into grape vines, wheat, or roses. Ā And even that result [that is, of bigger weeds] is only for the short term ā Christ tells us what will happen to such weeds in the long term: they will be thrown into the fire (St. Matthew 13:30). Ā The Sun of Righteousness is a dead-end for weeds! Ā Our roots must be removed and our branches grafted to the True Vine in order for the rays and heat of the Sun of Righteousness to bring us everlasting growth and goodness. Ā Pruning is painful. Ā Grafting takes effort. Ā No one wants to do it, but the untended garden is a curse to your yard. Ā No one wants to do the work, but we know we have to.Ā So here's the segue: We must be grafted to the Tree of Life, and that Tree is the Cross. Why We Love the Cross The Cross is the work of salvation. Ā Putting to death the old man so that the new one can live in Christ ā this is how we are transformed into perfection. Ā Yes, it will be painful. Ā Excising sin and unhealthy habits is not a lot of fun. Ā But it has to be done. Ā It's not a lot of fun to be patient and charitable in the face of hatred and stupidity, but that is the path of transformation. Ā We crucify our own sins, nailing them to the cross so that we can be forgiven and learn to live without them, but we are also crucified by a world that quickly turns against those who truly live in Christ and have Him living in them. Ā If the world hates you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. Ā If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. Ā Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; (John 15:18-20a) If we desire salvation, if we desire joy, if we desire to do good, then we must sew on that patch, deny ourselves, take up the cross, and follow Christ. Ā Being a Christian is not easy ā we are sinful and so is the world we live in ā but it is the only right and rational thing to do. Ā If we are comfortable as Christians, then we aren't really trying. Ā The Cross is not comfortable, but it is our sign and symbol because it is the only path to victory. Epilogue All of you know pain. Ā All of you are tortured by crosses. Ā I have known you long enough to know the pain this world causes you. Ā For many of you, that pain and confusion has multiplied over the last couple of weeks.Ā Those crosses are real. Ā The pain they cause is real. Ā There is no end to the number of crosses in this world, but there is only one cross that saves, and that is the Cross of Christ. Ā We cannot choose what this world does to us, we cannot avoid the pain this world inflicts on us ā but if we live our pain as Christ did on the Cross, our pain will transform us into invincible warriors and holy saints and this world into a garden of grace and delight. Ā All other crosses lead inexorably to death, but the Cross of Christ is the way of eternal peace and perfection. Ā

In John 15, we encounter the profound metaphor of Jesus as the True Vine, inviting us to 'abide' in Him. This powerful imagery challenges us to examine our spiritual connection and fruitfulness. Are we truly rooted in Christ? The passage reminds us that our ability to bear fruit isn't automatic ā it requires intentional effort and a deep, abiding relationship with Jesus. Just as a vine dresser prunes branches for greater yield, God may 'cut back' areas of our lives that aren't productive. This process, while sometimes uncomfortable, ultimately leads to greater spiritual growth and impact. As we reflect on this, let's consider: What areas of our lives might God be pruning? How can we more fully abide in Christ, allowing His life-giving power to flow through us and produce abundant fruit? Abide - John 15:1-8: This new year hasn't started the way we expected. After the small fire in our facility, we've had to pivot, change some ministry plans and gather offsiteābut maybe that's part of what God is doing in us. In John 15, Jesus says He is the True Vine and that the Father prunes the branches so they can bear more fruit. Pruning isn't easy, but it leads to growth, life, and joy. As we remain connected to Jesus, we can experience His peace, answered prayer, and a fruitful life that glorifies God.
