The podcast no one knew they needed...and never saw coming from SportsChannel8. It's no secret that baseball isn't a popular topic with most of the crew at SC8. But with so many great minor league teams in the state of North Carolina and regional connections to MLB teams in nearby states, our listeners who love the sport will now get an SC8-style take on America's Pastime. Hosts: Max Gongaware, Daron Vaught, Mark Wood
With the first pitch for Season 3 of The Baseball Podcast, hosts Daron Vaught/Max Gongaware/Mark Wood talk pre-season happenings around MLB and make their Bold Predictions for the 2022. In Season 3, expect more guests, schticks, and general shenanigans from the crew...and occasionally some baseball. We're excited.
Sort of--I mean, we're beyond the All Star break and have 60 games left, so we're a little off. But for good reason! See, Daron has been busy covering/announcing USA Baseball with the Collegiate National team. Max had a birthday. And no one tunes in for Mark anyways, so he couldn't do it by himself...Don't worry though, we're back! The boys talked USAB, All Star game/Shohei Ohtani HR derby, and the nuance surrounding certain unwritten rules in baseball. Plus, Mark finally got Daron and Max to come around on bunting.
We stepped away from MLB/MiLB this week--who wants to hear us rant about foreign substances and uniform checks for an hour anyways. But following NC State's heartbreaking exit from the College World Series over the weekend, we were joined by Cory Smith (@RCorySmith) from PackPride to talk about this Wolfpack team's accomplishments this season. Of course, we also talked Omaha, Elliott Avent, and what Cory saw at the Doak.
After a short and scheduled break (hey, it's summer for us too), we're back with a Durham Bulls special episode. Our season ticket holding host Max Gongaware has been attending some Bulls games lately. Meanwhile, Daron Vaught has been on the call filling in for Patrick Kinas. Both give an update on the Bulls season so far for those of you who haven't been able to catch a game at the DBAP yet...aka Mark. Lastly, we have a special edition of the Baseball Reference dot com nickname game, featuring Red Sox and Yankees past and present for their first matchup of the year.
We got a visit from the Major League affiliate this week as we welcomed our man Hayes Permar on this episode. Perm not only runs our parent company, SportsChannel8, but also serves as the PA announcer for your Carolina Mudcats. We talked heckling, the future of Major (and Minor) league baseball in NC, and took some heat for recent social media posts
We're moving up in the podcasting world, landing our first guest here on TBP. Ryan Foose from MLB Raleigh (mlbraleigh.com/@mlbraleigh) tells us what an expansion MLB franchise would look like in Raleigh. The guys also talk MadBum's no hitter that wasn't--but was--and dial up more nicknames in the Baseball Reference dot com nickname game.
Minds out of the gutter, it's a baseball term. Max is back. Daron has Baseball Reference Nicknames. Mark is giving away free stuff. But don't worry, everyone is talking baseball...sometimes.
Episode 2 of this much anticipated season is here, but sadly Max is not. Daron Vaught and Mark Wood carry us through this one, covering some of the major storylines of the MLB season so far. Find out how Enos Slaughter was nearly Mark's dad. Also, like free stuff? Listen to find out how you can get free SC8 gear.
The crew is back for another season of your favorite SportsChannel 8 pod. Daron, Max and Mark reminisce on 2020 and talk about their personal offseason moves--like, Max literally moved. TBP preview the 2021 season and kick off some new content, so stay tuned to the end for the first rendition of Baseball Nicknames that Totally Make Sense (hint: Who is known as "The Sandblaster").
With this crazy, weird 2020 season coming to a close, the boys tied a bow on this season of The Baseball Podcast. Max waxed poetically about destiny, Mark won't stop talking about bunting for some reason, and true to form, Daron provided actual analysis of the World Series. Well done Dodgers, well done NC's Corey Seager (WS MVP), boo Justin Turner. We'll be back. Go Baseball!
We have a series! In this Fall Classic episode, Daron and Max highlight some players from NC who are killing it in the WS, and Mark defends bunting as a viable offensive option basically the entire show. Yikes. But we're through 5 games, so keep an eye out for another episode following the crowning of a champion this week. Also...WE HAVE MERCH. Check it out at sportschannel8thestore.com
We revisit the Championship Series, preview the World Series, and predict who will hoist the Commissioner's Trophy. Maybe America's Team of Destiny (and fun)? Stick around to the end for our players to watch with ties to North Carolina, loose as they may be. But guys, we have a World Series--we made it. Go baseball!
This episode got away from us a bit and now we're behind in the count. But if you enjoy random callbacks to childhood movies, live googling/YouTube during recording, and occasional baseball analysis sprinkled in, this episode of The Baseball Podcast is for you. We recap the Divisional Series, as well as preview the Championship Series including some key matchups, like Will Smith vs. Will Smith and Max (Muncy) vs. Max (Fried). And finally we visited Celebrity Detective dot com for some reason, but we learned a lot about one of North Carolina's own MLB stars.
Wow, they keep letting us do these. In this week's episode, the we cover the Wildcard Series that definitely didn't go the way we pictured it, what to expect from the Divisional Series, and the movie Blank Check for some reason. Also, stay tuned to hear our players to watch in the AL/NLDS with North Carolina ties--like Lewis Brinson #PackPro.
Welcome to SportsChannel8: The Baseball Podcast! In the leadoff episode, the crew (Max Gongaware, Daron Vaught and Mark Wood) gives some brief introductions and discusses the newly finalized MLB playoff picture. And in true SC8 form, we'll give you a reason to cheer for a few athletes with connections to North Carolina in these playoffs--some more obscure than others. This podcast will air weekly during the 2020 MLB postseason. We'll see if the brass at SC8 will let us keep going after that. But for now, and as long as you'll have us, SportsChannel8 is talking baseball.
