A court case in India has handed down a landmark ruling which could significantly improve women's abortion rights. It says all women, including those who are unmarried, have equal rights to termination.  Abortions have been legal since 1971, but because of a traditional preference for sons, and in-turn a higher prevalence of female fetus terminations access has been extremely restricted. Misva #292: Not To Offer a Blemished Animal Sacrifice Brought by a Gentile

Sefer Hachinuch

After presenting the command forbidding offering blemished animals as sacrifices, the Torah adds (Vayikra 22:5), “U'mi'yad Beneh Nechar Lo Takribu Et Lehem Elokechem Mi'kol Eleh” – that we may not offer such animals as sacrifices even if they are brought by non-Jews. We might have thought that although a Jew is not permitted to offer a blemished animal as a sacrifice, the Kohanim are allowed to accept such an animal sacrifice from a gentile. Gentiles are permitted to bring voluntary sacrifices to the Bet Ha'mikdash (“Nedarim” and “Nedabot”), and we might have assumed that the Torah's strict standards for our sacrifices, disqualifying a blemished animal, do not apply to gentiles. The Torah therefore clarified that even when a gentile offers a sacrifice, it must be unblemished. In order to maintain the people's sense of awe and reverence toward the Bet Ha'mikdash and the sacrifices, the Torah demands that all animals brought as sacrifices – even those offered by gentiles – must be unblemished. All 73 physical blemishes which disqualify an animal sacrifice when brought by a Jew likewise disqualify an animal sacrifice brought by a gentile. A Kohen who offers a blemished animal sacrifice brought by a gentile is liable to Malkut for transgressing this prohibition. This command brings to mind the famous, tragic story told by the Gemara in Masechet Gittin (55b-56a) of Bar-Kamsa, who became incensed when he was violently driven from a party to which he was mistakenly received an invitation. In order to avenge his humiliation, he schemed to arouse the Roman emperor's ire at the Jews by falsely reporting to him that the Jews were planning a revolt. To verify his charge, Bar-Kamsa advised the emperor to send an animal to Jerusalem to be offered as a sacrifice in the Bet Ha'mikdash on his behalf. As the animal was being transported to Jerusalem, Bar-Kamsa made a blemish in the animal which disqualified it as a sacrifice according to Torah law, but not according to the Roman pagan tradition. (The Gemara brings two opinions – that Bar-Kamsa either slit the animal's lip, or slit its eyelid.) The Rabbis debated whether or not they should offer the animal, as some argued that the animal should be sacrificed despite the blemish, in order to avoid tensions with the Roman government. In the end, however, the decision was made to refuse to offer the sacrifice. The emperor viewed this refusal as compelling evidence of the Jews' disloyalty, and this ultimately led to the destruction of the Bet Ha'mikdash. The Maharal of Prague (Rav Yehuda Loew, 1520-1609) raises the question of why the Jews were not upfront with the emperor, and did not simply explain to him that they could not offer the sacrifice because it was blemished en route to Jerusalem. Seemingly, they could have avoided this problem altogether by explaining the situation, and asking the emperor to send a new animal which they would happily sacrifice. The Maharal answers that there was a more fundamental issue at stake. The Romans insisted that the Bet Ha'mikdash belonged to everyone equally, to Jews and gentiles alike, all of whom have the same level of access to the sacred domain. If the emperor would have heard that the Jews refused to offer his animal because it had a blemish which disqualified it according to Jewish law, even though it did not disqualify the animal according to the rules of Roman paganism, he would have been enraged. In his mind, he had the same rights in the Bet Ha'mikdash as the Jews, and so an animal which he deemed suitable should be offered. In truth, the Maharal explains, the gentiles receive the spiritual benefits of the Bet Ha'mikdash only because of the Jews' service there, and thus the gentiles' animal sacrifices must adhere to the same standards as the Jews' sacrifices. Telling this to the emperor would have aroused his ire, and thus the Jews did not have the option of avoiding tensions by asking the emperor to send a different animal. Developing this point further, the Maharal writes that the gentiles have no authority whatsoever over the Bet Ha'mikdash, and did not even have the power to destroy it. As the Gemara (Sanhedrin 96b) states, “Kimha Tehina Tehinat” – when the Romans destroyed the Bet Ha'mikdash, it was as if they were grinding finely-ground flour. The Bet Ha'mikdash was already destroyed because of the Jews' misdeeds, specifically, the sin of Sin'at Hinam (baseless hatred among the people). It is not the enemy nations who destroy the Bet Ha'mikdash, but rather the Jewish People, through their wrongdoing. The gentiles have no connection to the Bet Ha'mikdash, despite the right they are given to offer sacrifices, and it only our sins which lead G-d to send them to destroy the Mikdash.

Seemingly the last person to see her alive would be a young man who was also a classmate of hers at The Air Vice Marshal Hugh Campbell School. The two had gone for a ride oh his bicycle. When the young girl did not return home, the young boy would in fact become a suspect in her disappearance. On June 11th, two days after she had gone missing, tragically her body would be found and on June 12th, the young man would be arrested and charged with first-degree murder. Marketing to Women with Authenticity: Ep. 29 of Red Sky Fuel for Thought Podcast What You'll Learn in This Episode:o  The current state of the female consumero  How brands can effectively reach women and avoid ‘pinkwashing'o  How social media has helped women take over brand marketingo  The importance of authentic representation of women in media In the late 1990s, the phrase ‘marketing to women' became part of the corporate lexicon. Seemingly overnight, financial services brands, among others were waking up to the power of the female consumer. Some brands responded with a ‘shrink it and pink it' strategy – just changing the size, color, or packaging of products; others created bespoke products & services designed for women by women; and others changed how they marketed to women, in terms of how they featured women in their advertising and spoke to them with email or other communications. Over the ensuing two decades, many brands put forward real game-changing campaigns, but not without a fair share of tone-deaf ones as well.  In this month's episode, Red Havas' Linda Descano, CFA® is joined by Aliza Freud, Founder and CEO of SheSpeaks Inc., and Jeannine Shao Collins, President of SeeHer, to explore the state of marketing to women and offer actionable tactics for how brands can build more authentic, meaningful connections with women across different touch points, whether advertising, marketing or PR-driven. Aliza kicks off the conversation with a look into the current state of the female consumer and how women are responding to brands, a topic covered in a recent survey conducted by SheSpeaks. “Women are feeling burnt out,” says Aliza. “The instability caused by many outside factors in the last few years have interrupted the lives of women and impacted the way they are feeling, both mentally and physically.” Aliza goes on to explain how this has changed the expectations women have for brands trying to reach them: “Women have hit a point where they have too many important things to focus on and don't have enough time or energy to cut through the marketing of it all; they are looking for brands to talk to them authentically about how their product will make their lives better and easier." “When women are seeking out brands, they want to understand a company's purpose, values, and what they stand for,” says Jeannine. “Standing up for what you believe in as a company can be a driving force for growth for your business. We've also seen that when a company has high gender equality scores, women are more likely to make purchases and have a better perception of its brand reputation.” Next, our guests discuss some insights from their personal experiences for creating meaningful engagement with women and avoiding ‘pinkwashing.' “Women want a benefit-driven conversation,” says Aliza. “You also need to be highly aware of the macro-environment, such as the political and economic landscape, because women are very much plugged into how these issues affect themselves and those they care about.” “We believe that if you can see her, you can be her,” says Jeannine. “Through that intersectional lens, we deal with the seven tenants of inclusivity, which include race, gender, race, and ethnicity, body type, age, and ability. We make sure that we are talking to all women, not just one type of woman. In our research, we found that ads perform better and lead to better sales when women are portrayed as counter-stereotypes, doing things that are unexpected and being represented in their full lives.” Our guests then discuss the creative shift occurring in brand marketing as more women begin to have a seat at the table. “The advent of social media content creators has democratized brand marketing for women,” says Aliza. “With 86% of social media influencers being women, they are dominating in terms of building followings and creating engaging content. When you compare a piece of content from a female influencer with a brand-developed asset, the influencer content is winning every time, largely due to the benefit-driven messaging it provides.” Jeannine talks about SeeHer's series of “#WriteHerRight” guides, which were developed to help writers, show runners, media executives, and actors to understand how to portray women authentically. The series also includes guides specifically centered around portraying Black female characters and Latina characters, with more in the works. “It's important that women are represented in all aspects, whether it's front of or behind the camera,” adds Jeannine. “There is a lot of unconscious gender bias that people don't realize they're putting forward when there are no women present in the room.” To close out the conversation, both of our guests provide one recommendation for brand marketers and communicators to keep in mind when marketing to women as they plan programs and campaigns for 2023. “In this environment, gender equality is not something to take for granted,” says Jeannine. “Equip yourself with the tools and resources needed to combat your unconscious gender biases so you can better understand what consumers want and how you can produce creative that resonates with them.” “It's important to recognize that women are not a monolith,” says Aliza. “You need to be mindful that not every woman believes or thinks the same way. Be aware of this as you come up with your campaigns, messaging, and the products and services you're offering to the women's market.” Give “Red Sky Fuel for Thought” a listen, and subscribe to the show on iTunes, Spotify or your favorite podcasting app. Don't forget to rate and review to help more people find us!Also mentioned on this episode:·     SheSpeaks Women's State of Mind Survey·     SeeHer #WriteHerRight·     Fidelity's influencer program·     Always #LikeAGirl campaign·     P&G #ShareTheLoad campaign·     Adidas x Havas Liquid Billboard case film Follow Red Havas for a daily dose of comms news:·     Twitter·     Facebook·     Instagram·     LinkedIn Subscribe:Don't forget to subscribe to the show using your favorite podcasting app.·     iTunes·     Spotify What did you love? linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema This September is “Masterclass Month” at Catching Up On Cinema! Every September, Trevor and Kyle celebrate the anniversary of Catching Up On Cinema by doing a deep dive into one of cinemas most famous franchises. September 2022 marks the 4th year anniversary of the show, and to celebrate the occasion, Trevor and Kyle will be reviewing the first 4 films of the X-Men film series! This week, Trevor and Kyle review Brett Ratner's, X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)! Produced under hurried and less than ideal circumstances, The Last Stand is the third X-Men film, as well as the first to not be helmed by (problematic) director Bryan Singer. With Singer departing the series after X2 (2003) in favor of directing Superman Returns (2006), bringing with him X-Men alum James Marsden and X2 writers, Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris, The Last Stand had unfortunate beginnings at Fox as a massively expensive trilogy capper that went into production with neither a finished script, nor a director assigned to it. Seemingly the studios last choice to helm the project after an industry wide talent search, (the problematic) Brett Ratner would receive the gig, fittingly as a result of essentially being the last man standing. Significantly less visually interesting, less creatively inspired, and less willing to properly explore it's own thematic content, The Last Stand is not quite an outright bad superhero film, though it fails to live up to the lofty standards set by its more handsome and daring predecessors. Oddly obsessed with needlessly and incessantly referencing the Marvel comics source material, while simultaneously contradicting and spitting in the face of it in equal measure, The Last Stand is a production that is not without heart or inspiration, rather a lack of organization and purpose prove to be its most damning liabilities. One of the most expensive productions of its time, X-Men: The Last Stand only occasionally looks or feels its budget, and only occasionally feels like a movie that the majority of those involved were actually enthused about making. Representing the first critical speed bump in the X-Men series, The Last Stand is a workmanlike effort that serves as the very necessary, but aesthetically and tonally dissonant resolution, to the first leg of a film franchise that would unfortunately need to get worse before it would need to reinvent itself in order to get better. Now Abel became a shepherd of flocks, but Cain worked the ground. 3 In the course of time Cain presented some of the land's produce as an offering to the Lord. 4 And Abel also presented an offering—some of the firstborn of his flock and their fat portions. The Lord had regard for Abel and his offering, 5 but he did not have regard for Cain and his offering. Cain was furious, and he looked despondent. 6 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you furious? And why do you look despondent? 7 If you do what is right, won't you be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, but you must rule over it.” 8 Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let's go out to the field.” And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. Seemingly no topic is off limits in this hilarious and honest interview as the McBrides deliver a masterclass in how to raise a loving, generous, tight-knit family. You likely already know Steve Madden's name, either from the iconic "Big Head Girl" commercial from the late '90s or from seeing it printed on the side of the shoes sitting in your closet. But if it's not for the shoes, you may have heard his name mumbled through the lips of a drugged-up Jonah Hill in the big-budget Martin Scorsese film The Wolf of Wall Street. Seemingly out of nowhere, Steve Madden became one of the biggest names in the shoe business of the '90s and early 2000s. But the company's meteoric rise to fame met a brick wall when Steve took some seriously bad financial advice from a childhood friend, resulting in criminal convictions and a few years in prison. Steve tells his side of the story and further exposes his struggles with drug addiction in the documentary film Maddman: The Steve Madden Story and his reveal-all book The Cobbler. Since his release from prison in 2005, Steve has worked hard to put his life in order and get his company back on the right path. I've known Steve for a while now, but it's been a real pleasure getting to know him better through this conversation, and I know you're going to enjoy listening to his story. Thanks for tuning in to episode 17. We hope you enjoy it! Did you know that YOU can be on The Nordy Pod? This show isn't just a one-way conversation. Welcome back from the long weekend and, in a way, from the summer! We figured you might have some things to say on a day like today, and we've been doing these shows a couple times a month where we don't book any guests, where we fill the hour with your calls. And your calls have been interesting and surprising and amusing. This hour, the conversation winds around to commercial creep on public radio, “The Purple People Eater” and Nope, defenders and detractors of our new radio promos, the Cary Grant movie People Will Talk(which we carelessly left out of our rom-coms show), the circular economy (and Amazon taking its damn boxes back), legendary Connecticut broadcaster Bob Steele, and legendary march maker John Philip Sousa. Anything. (Seemingly) everything. These shows are fun for us, and they seem to be fun for you, too. So we did another one. Join the conversation on Facebook and Twitter. "Why is she getting the good dances and I am not?" - used to be one of the most persistent questions running through my mind at a milonga. I had done the work - group classes, privates, technique training, workshops - but still I found myself sitting tanda after tanda sulking. Tango can be pretty brutal like that. Seemingly for no reason, it grants favor to some but not others. The "some" soak it in, taking it for granted. The "others" are left scratching their heads on the sidelines wondering... But the good news is that the solution to my problems was right under my nose all along. I just needed to change perspective. In this episode I  spill the beans on what I consider to be the most important reasons why you might not be getting the dances that you want and suggest some practical ways you can begin to take matters into your own capable hands. Women Leading Tango Portland: https://imsotango.namastream.com/product/47115/aboutEssential Tango Mechanics FREE course: https://imsotango.namastream.com/product/52054/lessonsBook a session with me: https://imsotango.com/private-packagesQuestions/comments? The suboccipital muscles have a lot more in common with deep space than one might think. The exquisite balance of all the dimensions that define us are evidenced in the structure and function of this particular cluster of muscles. Seemingly warping our individual universes, the suboccipital muscles require an awareness of the time-space continuum to help navigate how we approach this region with our clients.    Host:                   Contact Allison Denney: rebelmt@abmp.com             Allison's website: www.rebelmassage.com                      Allison Denney is a certified massage therapist and certified YouTuber. And I am not your typical massage therapist. After 20 years of experience and thousands of clients, I have learned that massage therapy is SO MUCH more than a relaxing experience at a spa. I see soft tissue as more than merely a physical element but a deeply complex, neurologically driven part of who you are. I use this knowledge to work with you—not on you—to create change that works. This is the basis of my approach. As a massage therapist, I have worked in almost every capacity, including massage clinics, physical therapy clinics, chiropractor offices, spas, private practice, and teaching.
