Preacher Roe had a cup of coffee with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1938, appearing in just one game. He lasted just 2 2/3 innings and didn't see another #MLB game until 1944 after being traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates. But once he got to Pittsburgh, he became one of the National League's most reliable pitchers. He played with Pittsburgh for four years before being traded to the Brooklyn Dodgers, where he became one of the best pitchers in baseball - period. His 1951 season, when he went 22-3 with a 3.04 ERA, is considered to be one of the best in history. Overall, Roe won 127 games. A four-time All-Star, Roe helped the Dodgers to three National League pennants and went 2-1 with an ERA of just 2.54 over the course of three World Series against the New York Yankees. Yet, as good as Roe was, his career is largely overlooked. On this episode of Sports' Forgotten Heroes, I take a look back at Roe's journey to the Majors, the obstacles he had to overcome, and his near brush with death with my guest, David Jerome, whose new book, "The Life of A Professional Baseball Great From the Ozarks: Preacher Roe." Jerome, who went deep in his research about Roe tells us how Preacher got his nickname, how the family baseball team helped launch his career, and how his other profession, a grade-school teacher, helped shape the man he became.Takeaways:Preacher Rowe's career is a testament to perseverance and overcoming adversity in sports.Rowe's remarkable achievements include leading the Dodgers to three National League pennants in the 1950s.Despite his success, Rowe remains one of the most overlooked pitchers in baseball history. The podcast highlights Rowe's colorful personality and his contributions to the Dodgers' legacy.Listeners learn about the influence of Rowe's early life and upbringing on his baseball career. The episode emphasizes the importance of recognizing lesser-known sports heroes who shaped their games.Links referenced in this episode:sportshistorynetwork.comsportsfh.infomail.commcfarlandbooks.comCompanies mentioned in this episode:Sports History NetworkPittsburgh PiratesBrooklyn DodgersNew York YankeesHarding CollegeMcFarland

The Treasury just signaled it will do whatever it takes to hold the long end together, and Bitcoin ripped toward $80,000 about 45 minutes after the headline hit.
Giancarlo Stanton's latest calf injury could end both his season and his Yankees career. The debate turns to whether New York should finally move on from Stanton, how his remarkable October availability shapes his legacy, and why injuries to Ryan Weathers and Max Fried reinforce the idea that the Yankees can never have enough pitching. George Lombard Jr. then becomes one of the day's hottest arguments after a shaky defensive weekend. Shaun Morash doubles down on his belief that Lombard should eventually be among baseball's elite shortstops and reach the Hall of Fame conversation, setting off callers and plenty of pushback. The Giants also take center stage as Jaxson Dart's repeated trips to the blue medical tent become both a running joke and a legitimate concern heading toward the regular season. The show also hits Tarik Skubal's Dodgers future, the Jets' preseason flashes, Deshaun Watson and Cleveland's dysfunction, and the tightening AL East race.
The Dodgers' handling of Tarik Skubal has Evan Roberts convinced they have no intention of keeping the ace long term. After back-to-back starts featuring two of the highest pitch counts of Skubal's career, Evan argues Los Angeles is riding him hard because they expect him to leave, opening the door for the Mets to become the obvious landing spot. Shaun Morash is in for Tiki Barber alongside Evan Roberts and pushes back on just how certain that conclusion really is. The hour also turns into a heated Deshaun Watson debate after the Browns quarterback fires back at Cleveland fans for booing him. Evan calls the Browns more dysfunctional than the Jets, while Shaun argues the reaction is partly fueled by the fan obsession with Sanders. Plus, George Lombard Jr.'s Yankees future, Anthony Volpe's role, Francisco Alvarez frustration, and a birthday-text feud with Tommy Lugauer.
The Dodgers' handling of Tarik Skubal has Evan Roberts convinced they have no intention of signing him long term. After Los Angeles pushed Skubal to two of the highest pitch counts of his career in consecutive August starts, Evan argues the Dodgers are treating him like a rental and riding him as hard as possible before he leaves. Shaun Morash pushes back on declaring it a done deal, but agrees the workload is strange. Evan takes the argument one step further, predicting that if the Dodgers are truly out, the Mets could become the clear favorite to land Skubal. Plus, the Yankees' future comes into focus with George Lombard Jr., Anthony Volpe's potential role at second base, and questions about how the infield could look in 2027.

As the baseball world enters the final month of the regular season, teams are all ready to make their final push to try and lock in their spot for the postseason. While the Wild Card spots have allowed more teams into the dance, some are still eyeing a possible division championship. With the Atlanta Braves being a mainstay at the top of the NL East, the Philadelphia Phillies, on their hot streak, look ready to make a move to the top of the division. On this episode of Baseball Bar-B-Cast, Jake Mintz and Jordan Shusterman talk about the Phillies' nine-game win streak after sweeping the St. Louis Cardinals and completing an incredible ninth-inning comeback on Sunday. Even though the Phillies and Braves will face off six more times before the season ends, there's a real reason to believe that the City of Brotherly Love is not ready to settle for an NL Wild Card spot just yet. Later in the show, Jake and Jordan talk about the incredible game from Randy Arozarena on Saturday, as well as Kade Anderson's debut in the same game and why the Seattle Mariners still have a good chance to possibly snag the AL West with their schedule the rest of the way.
