Hour 3 (8.25) The official unemployment rate is 4.1%. Another measure says one in four American workers is "functionally unemployed," and it just rose for the fourth month in a row. 8:05 — Chargers, Dodgers, the Travel Store, iHeartRadio Music Festival tickets at axs.com, and the Conway Cruise at conwaycruise.com. 8:20 — Labor Day travel. What's actually still on the table at Disneyland, and the question everybody asks backwards: when do airfares really drop. 8:35 — 24.9% of the American workforce is "functionally unemployed" — jobless, stuck in part-time work they didn't ask for, or earning a poverty wage — against an official rate of 4.1%. Then the warm-water file: a hammerhead filmed off Laguna Beach on Saturday, the first the photographer had seen in Southern California since 2015, and a bad shark bite off Key West. Plus rattlesnake season that started in March and hasn't let up, and Crozier's position on spiders. 8:50 — Two kinds of plumber, and only one of them is licensed and insured. Plumbing Wholesale Outlet. Plus, the extreme heat warning runs through 8 p.m. Friday, with the Inland Empire around 105 and Thursday at the peak. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Ken tries to justify why he's rooting for the Guardians "in a vacuum" this year, separate from the frustration surrounding the Browns and Cavs, and workshops a series of college football comparisons—first Purdue, then Minnesota, then Arkansas—to capture a scrappy, low-budget team overperforming against big spenders like the Dodgers. Lima and the rest of the room shoot down every comparison as a stretch, with Ken eventually conceding he's just trying to find a way to be excited about a low-payroll team making the playoffs without sounding like he's making excuses for ownership. The segment closes with a quick preview of Sunday's Browns game and reminders about the AFC North catch-up and Ralphy Velasquez chatter from earlier in the show.

Just when you thought there wasn't anything else left to rank, the MLB Pipeline gang surprises you. This week, they've been ranking farm systems by positions and that's where Sam Dykstra, Jonathan Mayo and Jason Ratliff kick off this week's Pipeline Podcast. They take a look at which organizations have the best assortment of infielders (Brewers), outfielders (Dodgers), pitchers (Marlins) and catchers (Twins). Then they welcome in top Angels prospect Arjun Nimmala to talk about getting traded at the deadline, his development and the opportunity to keep playing in the Arizona Fall League. That served as a perfect segue into a discussion about who the guys would like to see in this year's AFL before they turned their attention to Kade Anderson's big league debut and who from the "next up" list might be... next up. Things wrapped up nicely with a Mailbag question about which callup could have a Randy Arozorena-esque postseason run this year. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Preacher Roe had a cup of coffee with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1938, appearing in just one game. He lasted just 2 2/3 innings and didn't see another #MLB game until 1944 after being traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates. But once he got to Pittsburgh, he became one of the National League's most reliable pitchers. He played with Pittsburgh for four years before being traded to the Brooklyn Dodgers, where he became one of the best pitchers in baseball - period. His 1951 season, when he went 22-3 with a 3.04 ERA, is considered to be one of the best in history. Overall, Roe won 127 games. A four-time All-Star, Roe helped the Dodgers to three National League pennants and went 2-1 with an ERA of just 2.54 over the course of three World Series against the New York Yankees. Yet, as good as Roe was, his career is largely overlooked. On this episode of Sports' Forgotten Heroes, I take a look back at Roe's journey to the Majors, the obstacles he had to overcome, and his near brush with death with my guest, David Jerome, whose new book, "The Life of A Professional Baseball Great From the Ozarks: Preacher Roe." Jerome, who went deep in his research about Roe tells us how Preacher got his nickname, how the family baseball team helped launch his career, and how his other profession, a grade-school teacher, helped shape the man he became.Takeaways:Preacher Rowe's career is a testament to perseverance and overcoming adversity in sports.Rowe's remarkable achievements include leading the Dodgers to three National League pennants in the 1950s.Despite his success, Rowe remains one of the most overlooked pitchers in baseball history. The podcast highlights Rowe's colorful personality and his contributions to the Dodgers' legacy.Listeners learn about the influence of Rowe's early life and upbringing on his baseball career. The episode emphasizes the importance of recognizing lesser-known sports heroes who shaped their games.Links referenced in this episode:sportshistorynetwork.comsportsfh.infomail.commcfarlandbooks.comCompanies mentioned in this episode:Sports History NetworkPittsburgh PiratesBrooklyn DodgersNew York YankeesHarding CollegeMcFarland
