//The Wire//2300Z September 25, 2026// //ROUTINE// //BLUF: RUSSIA AND UKRAINE INCREASE MUTUAL TARGETING EFFORTS OVERNIGHT. HOUTHIS ATTEMPT TO STRIKE SAUDI TARGETS, ALL MISSILES INTERCEPTED. AMERICAN ASPIRATIONS FOR INTERVENTION IN CUBA CONTINUE TO MOUNT.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE-----  -International Events-Baltic Sea: Tensions are high as a series of escalations have remained constant between NATO and Russia. Overnight a flight of Russian Tu-134 transport aircraft being escorted by fighters was observed patrolling over the Gulf of Finland, prompting Finland and Sweden to scramble fighters to intercept and identify the Russian aircraft.Analyst Comment: This was the first time a joint identification mission was carried out between Finland and Sweden, but more generally this is a routine mission set and not really anything out of the ordinary. However, as the tensions around the continent remain high and European leaders have issued serious statements over the past few days urging war, these standard identification missions are usually the tip of the spear in terms of the potential for sharp escalations to occur. Fighter aircraft intercepting each other tends to be an opportunity for nations to keep up more active "foreign relations", and an increase in flights over international waters tends to be a barometer for determining how serious nations are with regard to their rhetoric. As it stands, a lot of bluster is going around between NATO and Russia, which will probably get more intense over the next few weeks.Russia: Overnight, Ukraine increased attacks on Russian infrastructure in retaliation for last night's strikes in Kiev. Ukrainian drones targeted petroleum refineries in Perm and Rostov. A chemical plant was also struck in Voronezh, and a factory was hit in Ulyanovsk. In response, Russia continued strikes in and around Kiev, most notably targeting a McDonald's warehouse.Analyst Comment: The strikes conducted by Ukraine were the most significant reported in a few weeks, all of which were conducted hundreds of miles from the front lines. The continual Ukrainian strikes on Russian petroleum infrastructure despite President Trump's order to cease these attacks is quite interesting, and highlights the frustrations within the United States regarding the administration of the war. At the moment, many are pointing the finger at Zelensky for his open defiance of the United States regarding strikes on Russian refineries, but reading between the lines in a larger sense, these strikes are also probably not explicitly and solely Zelensky's decision. Looking within, if the US genuinely wants to stop diesel refineries from getting hit (even Russian ones) a quick phone call to Langley is probably more effective in stopping Ukrainian targeting than anything else.China: Yesterday the National Development and Reform Commission announced an increase in the price of gasoline and diesel, raising the national price cap for the second time in two weeks, bringing fuel prices to levels roughly 24-26% higher than pre-war levels.Middle East: Overnight Houthi forces launched a total of 6x ballistic missiles toward various targets in Saudi Arabia. Saudi forces intercepted all missiles, with no impacts being reported on the ground.Analyst Comment: Thankfully for the Saudis, this time missile defenses were effective at neutralizing the threat. However, this latest attack has strained the newly-signed Mecca Joint Defense Agreement, which is a mutual defense pact between Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey. Both Pakistan and Turkey are in a tough spot, because this new agreement is essentially the Arab version of NATO's Article 5 in that an attack on one, is treated as an attack on all. Neither Turkey nor Pakistan want to become involved in the Houthi crisis, and as a result have treated the Houthi problem as a "preexisting condition" which is not covered by their new defense policy. Either way, it's semantics at the end of the day, and the biggest threat to Saudi Arabia at present, is the Houthis.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Over the past few days, mainstream media reporting has claimed to have leaked emails describing a potential American ground invasion of Cuba. While this sounds fantastical at face value (which is not helped by the lack of any corroborating sources being publicly available), this has been on the table for some time. Right now, the origin for these claims is a single CBS news report, which references internal Army communications concerning this potential campaign.Examining the raw data, the current situation in the region does not indicate an imminent invasion or other military campaign. There have been no increases in observable aircraft staging in Florida, nor have there been any irregular troop movements to the region. The US Navy is currently not staging forces for an expected increase in operations within SOUTHCOM, and all naval deployments so far seem to be routine. There has been an observable increase in Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) flights around Cuba for a few months, but nothing that indicates anything serious. In terms of the likelihood of American intervention in Cuba, the likelihood must be considered in the context of the past few months of rhetoric. President Trump quite literally stated back in March that "Cuba's going to be next", and various statements over the past few months have rather strongly depicted American aspirations on the island. Whether or not the US intends to actually follow through on the desires to seize the island (or do something else) is anybody's guess, but it's not likely to happen anytime soon in any case. For the moment however, posturing and pressure are likely to continue, and probably will escalate over the next few weeks.Analyst: S2A1 Research: https://publish.obsidian.md/s2underground NomadNet: 5fa68c88be727a0e1a250a75e5e79269 Disclaimer: No LLMs were used in the writing of this report. //END REPORT//

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

State Department Halts Immigrant Visas: The U.S. Department of State has paused all immigrant visa applications from outside the United States and is preparing to revoke up to 200,000 business and tourism visas held by individuals who have sought asylum. H-2A Farmworker Wage Rates in Limbo: A federal court ruled that the DOL's Adverse Effect Wage Rate methodology for H-2A farmworkers is unlawful, requiring the agency to recalculate rates and potentially exposing employers to back pay liability for the difference. The system is so messed up that employers will hide employment postings in all kinds of obscure places so that they can say they “tried” to hire Americans, when in reality, they just want an excuse to ship in a “director of pickleball” from India. Is an 18-Month Blackout on the Horizon? Energy's Perfect Storm

Energy News Beat Podcast

Welcome to the Energy Newsbeat, where host Stu Turley breaks down the ten most critical energy stories shaping global markets and infrastructure. In this episode, we explore a landscape marked by unprecedented challenges and opportunities: from the alarming vulnerability of the U.S. power grid to coordinated cyberattacks, to Iraq's aggressive push to double oil production and reshape Middle Eastern energy politics. As geopolitical tensions escalate—with Ukraine striking Russian refineries and the U.S. tightening sanctions on Iran—the global energy market faces historic supply constraints, record-high refining margins, and tanker costs that are reshaping fuel prices worldwide. Meanwhile, the explosive growth of AI data centers is creating a power demand crisis that threatens to overwhelm manufacturing capacity for years to come. This episode examines how these interconnected forces—from grid security and sanctions effectiveness to renewable energy policy and oil market dynamics—are fundamentally transforming the energy landscape and what it means for consumers, investors, and national security.1. U.S. Grid Vulnerability & Blackout RiskThe host discusses the critical vulnerability of the U.S. power grid to coordinated attacks on substations. Former FERC chairman John Wellinghoff warned that targeting just nine key substations could cause an 18-month nationwide blackout, potentially affecting millions. The episode emphasizes the importance of backup power systems and preparedness.2. Iraq's Oil Production Expansion & OPEC DynamicsIraq is aggressively pursuing plans to double its oil production capacity to 8-10 million barrels per day, with major oil companies (Chevron, Exxon, BP) securing new contracts. The discussion explores whether OPEC will allow this expansion and how Iraq is building export routes through Turkey to bypass the Strait of Hormuz.3. Sanctions on Iran & Their EffectivenessThe episode covers U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessen's sanctions strategy against Iran, examining whether sanctions are effectively constraining Iran's oil exports. Evidence shows Iran's exports have collapsed from 1.8-2.1 million barrels per day to near zero, though Iran is finding workarounds using land-based truck transport.4. Drone Threats to Oil InfrastructureThe UAE has installed massive metal cage structures over oil storage tanks in Abu Dhabi for anti-drone protection—a response to increasing drone strikes on energy infrastructure in the Ukraine-Russia conflict. This reflects how modern warfare is changing energy security.5. Ukraine's Strikes on Russian RefineriesUkraine has successfully struck major Russian refineries, including the Lukoil refinery in Perm, degrading Russia's refining capacity and military fuel supply. This has significant global oil market implications.6. Diesel Supply Shortages & Crack SpreadsHedge funds are reducing bearish bets on European diesel, signaling expected fuel supply shortages. U.S. crack spreads (the profit margin for refining) have hit record highs at $102 per barrel, driven by tight inventories and high tanker costs—not refinery gouging.7. AI Data Center Power Demand CrisisGE Vernova's gas turbine backlog has hit 116 gigawatts with delivery delays until 2031. The episode explores how AI data centers' massive power appetite is creating a manufacturing bottleneck, forcing companies to "bring your own power" (BYOP) solutions.8. Floating Offshore Wind Farms in BritainThe UK is moving to expensive floating offshore wind farms with 200 new turbines and 300-400 kilometers of cables. The host argues this approach will increase energy costs and require natural gas backup, contradicting net-zero goals.9. Winter Gasoline Waiver & Ethanol PolicyThe Trump administration issued an emergency waiver allowing early transition to winter-grade gasoline to help curb prices. The host advocates for eliminating ethanol mandates, arguing it wastes energy and increases consumer costs.10. Venezuela Oil Rig RestartSchlumberger (SLB) is preparing to restart 15 idle oil rigs in Venezuela to ease drilling bottlenecks, though Venezuela faces energy constraints that complicate operations.Overarching Theme: The podcast emphasizes that global energy markets are tight, oil and gas remain essential long-term, and geopolitical factors (sanctions, conflicts, infrastructure attacks) are reshaping energy supply chains and prices.1.What if 9 Substations were Targeted on the US Grid? Would Jon Wellinghoff's Prediction of an 18-Month US Grid Blackout Happen?2.Will Iraq leave OPEC, or will OPEC allow Iraq to double exports within six years?3.Will Choking Iran's Economy End the War, or Are They Too Resilient?4.UAE Cageing Up Their Oil Storage for Anti-Drone Protection5.Ukraine Hits Lukoil Refinery. How Degraded is the Russian Refinery Capacity?6.Hedge Funds Cut Bearish Bets on European Diesel to Two-Year Low7.GE Vernova's Gas Turbine Backlog Hits 116 GW. What Does This Mean for the AI Market?8.Britain Doubles Down on Wind by Moving to Floating Wind Farms for More Expensive Energy9.US Allows Early Sales of Winter Gasoline to Help Curb Prices10.SLB Prepares to Restart 15 Oil Rigs in VenezuelaA shout-out to Steve Reese and the Reese Energy Consulting group for sponsoring the Podcast https://reeseenergyconsulting.com/.Data2 if you have any business systems, can you trust A?

Twenty-five years on, we're taking Elle Woods back to court, and this one holds up better than almost anything else from 2001. First up we get into the real-life story the movie is based on: the real law student who felt like an outcast for loving pink and for the fluffy pen she took to class. Then there's the casting chaos that nearly sank the whole thing. Christina Applegate said no, Britney Spears was in the mix, and the studio thought Reese was too "unlikeable" to lead, so we break down the audacious move she pulled to land the role, and why it only works because of her.And finally, the ending you never got to see. In a rare twist, test audiences wanted more, and the alternate version they nearly went with would've turned the whole film into a cautionary tale.

Escuchar audio

//The Wire//2300Z April 30, 2026// //ROUTINE// //BLUF: TERRORISM CONCERNS REMAIN IN UNITED KINGDOM. UKRAINIAN TARGETING OF RUSSIAN OIL INFRASTRUCTURE CONTINUES. OIL MARKET REMAINS VOLATILE AS GULF WAR REMAINS STAGNANT.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE-----  -International Events-Lebanon: The ceasefire has mostly collapsed, with fighting resuming between Hezbollah and the IDF. Several FPV drone strikes have targeted Israeli armor in the border regions of Lebanon over the past few days, and Israeli forces continue to mandate the evacuation of the newly created "buffer zone" south of the Litani River.United Kingdom: Counterterrorism policing operations have continued in the wake of the Golders Green attack yesterday, with authorities confirming that the suspect who conducted the stabbing is of Somali origin. The individual has been identified as Essa Suleiman, an individual who had previously been arrested for stabbing two police officers back in 2008. After this incident, he was incarcerated and a flagged as a potential terrorist threat under the Prevent program in 2020. At some point he was released and/or escaped the mental institution he was confined to, before conducting the stabbing yesterday. This morning, the national terrorism threat level was raised to SEVERE, meaning that further terror attacks are highly likely.Russia: Ukrainian targeting efforts throughout the nation have increased over the past few weeks, as Ukrainian forces pivot to targeting Russian oil terminals and refineries. The Lukoil petroleum refinery in Perm was hit overnight, along with the Tuapse Refinery on the Black Sea coast.Analyst Comment: This pivot to targeting Petroleum, Oil, and Lubricant (POL) facilities began in earnest last October, after a prolonged period of stagnation along the various front lines. As the war has been going on for a long time now, these targeting efforts received little attention outside the various communities observing the war. From Ukraine's perspective, these targeting efforts are perfectly reasonable, but for the rest of the world, the timing of this is going to cause an already tenuous oil market to increasingly be threatened. With the Middle East oil markets severely stifled by the Gulf War, the footnote that Russia is one of the largest producers of energy in the world has become a rather important detail. Russian oil refineries being blown up by the Ukrainians, while President Trump has alluded to the war continuing for some time, is almost certain to have follow-on effects which will (in the short term) drive up costs for nearly everything.-HomeFront-New York: This morning an explosion was reported at a residence in Queens. The incident began after one suspect (who has been identified as Anrup Parasram) attempted to break in to the residence, where his wife was living. A domestic disturbance developed, which involved the suspect attempting to conduct a stabbing attack. As authorities arrived on scene, the suspect barricaded himself inside the structure, before setting the house (and himself) on fire. A few moments later, the house exploded, possibly due to the suspect filling the home with natural gas. So far only minor injuries have been reported among responders, and the suspect remains "unaccounted for" per the FDNY.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Yesterday Brent crude futures briefly jumped to $120/bbl upon the news of the strategic situation regarding the war in the Middle East. In addition to the UAE announcing their departure from OPEC, diplomatic efforts to end the war are stagnant at best and President Trump has indicated that the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz will be in place on more of a long-term basis. Yesterday, a post was made on President Trump's Truth Social account referencing a "nonnuclear deal". Though the meaning of this is not perfectly clear (and thus can be interpreted in any numbe

It is 30 April 2026. The city of Perm, in the Russian Urals, sits more than fifteen hundred kilometres from the Ukrainian border. It is, by any conventional military measure, supposed to be safe. It is the sort of place Russian state media has spent four years assuring its citizens is permanently beyond the reach of Ukraine's response.----------SUPPORT THE CHANNEL:https://www.buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtainhttps://www.patreon.com/siliconcurtainhttps://www.gofundme.com/f/scaling-up-campaign-to-fight-authoritarian-disinformation----------SILICON CURTAIN LIVE EVENTS - FUNDRAISER CAMPAIGN Events in 2025 - Advocacy for a Ukrainian victory with Silicon Curtainhttps://buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtain/extrasOur events of the first half of the year in Lviv, Kyiv and Odesa were a huge success.
