More Post-Dispatch podcasts. Please consider subscribing. Welcome to the great plains. When next Major League Baseball hosts a World Series it will have been a decade since any of thw 10 teams from the Midwest divisions have reached the Fall Classic. They've rarely had a club get as far as the championship series, and the National League Central hasn't won a game in the best-of-seven NLCS since 2018. Oh, and coming out of the pandemic the small-market teams that dot the NL and American League Central divisions have been rocked by revenue turbulence. All while the games star free agents gather at the coasts. With that as the background, Cincinnati Enquirer baseball writer Gordon Wittenmyer suggested to Post-Dispatch baseball writer and BPIB host Derrick Goold that they poll as many executives as possible at the General Manager Meetings to ask: Which team in the NL Central is most likely to be the next team to win a World Series? The answers were revealing -- not just for the task, but also for what executives view as the most likely traits a team needs to win. The "most resources," came up often as the big-city Cubs received the most votes. Here is the Post-Dispatch story that came from the poll. And here is the podcast that expands upon the poll to discuss the factors that got the divisions here, how one or more can escape the bind, and whether Major League Baseball is just going to keep soaring above fly-over country until the economic structure of the game changes. The two baseball writers dissect how the Pirates could augment a talented team with a different payroll formula, how the Brewers may lose their edge, how the Cardinals made regain theirs, how the Reds could make a push to the top, how the Cubs could financially squash the competition, and why they don't. In the end, one of the writers makes his prediction for the NL Central team that will next win a World Series title. It's a team that just doesn't exist yet. In its 13th season as one of the first and most widely heard podcasts on baseball and the Cardinals, the Best Podcast in Baseball has reached a new season-high with 30 episodes. Each episode is sponsored weekly by Closets by Design of St. Louis, is a production of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, StlToday.com, and lead baseball writer Derrick Goold.

Gio's feeling bad for Blue Jays fans after the Dodgers take the World Series — with Yamamoto winning MVP, the guy Steve Cohen desperately tried to bring to Queens. We're talking an incredible Fall Classic, plus your calls on Brian Daboll's future. Who's the needle-mover that could save the Giants?
The Cincinnati Reds won the 1975 World Series in a classic 7-game matchup against the Boston Red Sox. The recent Dodgers victory over the Blue Jays is being argued as maybe the best Fall Classic ever, but that '75 Series saw the Reds come from behind to win all 4 of their games, including 4-3 in Game 7 at Fenway Park. The Reds had a team littered with Hall of Famers. Tony Perez, Joe Morgan and Johnny Bench as well as *Pete Rose were part of what was known as the Big Red Machine. They could do it all… Power, speed, average,, defense… the one thing they couldn't do was win the big one. They lost to Baltimore in 5 games in 1970… to the A's in 7 in 1972… to the Mets in the NLCS in '73 and didn't even make the playoffs in '74. But a bloop single by Joe Morgan in the 9th inning brought in the winning run for the Reds who won their first World Series title since 1940! A year later, they did it again, sweeping the Yankees to make it two straight championships for the Reds. Cincinnati was the toast of baseball and the Big Red Machine was now legendary. 50 years later we're still talking about that team and how good they were and nobody knows them better than Dr. Daryl Smith who currently serves as a Management professor at Cedarville University in Ohio. Previously, Daryl served as an Air Force office and pilot over a 24 year career. Much of his academic studies and research have centered on leadership and its role in organizational success. He has been trained to find the root causes of organizations' successes and failures. Daryl has a long association with the Cincinnati Reds. As a boy, he attended several games at Crosley Field, the first game at Riverfront Stadium and the 1970, 1972, and 1975 World Series. Twenty years ago, Daryl met and became acquainted with Bob Howsam, the brains behind the Big Red Machine and the central figure in his book, “Making the Big Red Machine: Bob Howsam and the Cincinnati Reds of the 1970's." Daryl talks to us about the small trade that became a huge deal when Howsam acquired the diminutive Morgan from Houston. He tells us how Cincy thought he was crazy to give up so much for the future 2-time MVP. He recalls how Manager Sparky Anderson moved Rose to 3rd base and how that changed the course of history for the team. And he tells how free agency and one trade prior to the 1977 season put an end to the greatest team in Reds history. November 3rd, 1975 saw Will McEnaney leaping into the arms of Johnny Bench after winning the greatest World Series ever played and Professor Smith helps us replay that Series one last time on the Past Our Prime podcast. Dodgers come back in game 7 to win the World Series I Did the right team win the Fall Classic? I LA fans do victory laps after the Dodgers go back-to-back, becoming the first team to do since the Yankees a quarter century ago.
In this episode of Locked Up Sports we dive into Game 7 of the 2025 World Series, where the Los Angeles Dodgers came from behind to defeat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-4 in 11 innings, clinching back-to-back championships and cementing their place among baseball's modern dynasties. We break down all the big plays — the early Blue Jays surge, the Dodgers' rally, the game-tying home run in the 9th, the extra-inning heroics and clutch defensive stand. We also make the case why this Game 7 was the greatest in baseball history. Then we shift gears to the Gold Glove results — defensive stars across both leagues — and finally we turn the heat up on New York's off-season: what the Mets are planning, what the Yankees must do, and rumours you need to know. Whether you're a Dodgers fan, a Mets/Yankees devotee, or just love epic baseball drama — this episode has you covered. Dive in, subscribe, share, and let's get Locked Up.
World Series Game SevenLos Angeles Dodgers @ Toronto Blue JaysThe best FOUR words in sports, WORLD SERIES GAME SEVEN. The Dodgers survived in game six thanks to another spectacular Yoshinobu Yamamoto performance and a clutch breakout from Mookie Betts. For the first time since 2019, the Fall Classic will come down to a decisive game seven. It has been an incredible series so far, with historic and record setting performances on both sides. Vlad Guerrero, Jr. and Ernie Clement could set the all time single season playoff hits record, Louie Garland could set a record for games pitched, and if this game is close at the end, we could be in for things we've never seen before.Starting for the Blue Jays will be the man who started the last World Series game seven, Max Scherzer. At 41 years old, Mad Max will be the oldest pitcher to start a winner-take-all game, and he becomes just the fourth pitcher to start multiple World Series game sevens (Bob Gibson, Don Larsen, and Lew Burdette). Going on short rest will be Shohei Ohtani, but expect all hands on deck for both squads, as there is no tomorrow. And by all hands, that will mean nearly every starting pitcher from both teams, including Yamamoto on no rest. Tune in for what may be the greatest game seven every played.Toronto Radio SN590 - Ben Shulman and Chris LerouxLos Angeles Radio AM570 - Stephen Nelson and Rick MondayFOX On Field - Ken Rosenthal, Tom Verducci, Kevin BurkhardtAudio clips from MLB.tvAs always, thank you to Baseball Reference and SABR for statistics, box scores, background information, and much, much more.Catch you next time,P.C.O.
What options do you have when your Game 7 starting pitcher falls ill? For the Milwaukee Braves in 1957, the answer was to call back Lew Burdette from two days' rest to pitch in the winner-takes-all duel against the New York Yankees. Burdette had already pitched two complete games and a shutout in the second. Now the weight of facing the Yankees, who were looking to go back-to-back in the Fall Classic. Meanwhile, the ferocious arm of Don Larsen — who pitched a perfect game in the 1956 World Series — was waiting for the Braves. With the respective MVPs of Hank Aaron and Mickey Mantle in the outfields, joined by Eddie Matthews and Yogi Berra offering back-up, the 1957 Series brings action, tension, and stars together. Bob Neale and Earl Gillespie are behind the radio microphones from Yankee Stadium. You can find the boxscore here: https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/NYA/NYA195710100.shtml This game was played on October 10, 1957.

World Series Game Six RecapLos Angeles Dodgers (93-69) @ Toronto Blue Jays (94-68)The Blue Jays come back home to Rogers Centre just one win away from their first championship since Joe Carter walked off Mitch Williams and the Phillies in game six of the 1993 Fall Classic. Vladdy Jr. continues his unbelievable playoff run, closing in on the single postseason record for hits. Toronto will have another boost, as George Springer returns to the lineup, though it is unclear how much he'll be able to do with his oblique injury. The Dodgers bats, on the other hand, have been mostly silent. Mookie Betts has struggled mightily this series, forcing manager Dave Roberts to shake up the lineup a bit. They'll need the future Hall-of-Famer to step up if they intend to extend the series. We should be in for another pitching duel for game six, as Kevin Gausman and Yoshinobu Yamamoto square up once again. The splitter heavy righties nearly matched one another in game two, but it was the Japanese ace who had the edge. With the season on the line, they both will need to bring their best. Can LA force a decisive game seven, or will Toronto wrap up the season in October?Toronto Radio SN590 - Ben Shulman and Chris LerouxLos Angeles Radio AM570 - Stephen Nelson and Rick MondayAudio clips from MLB.tvAs always, thank you to Baseball Reference and SABR for statistics, box scores, background information, and much, much more.Catch you next time,P.C.O.

The one to the north. The World Series. The two baseball writers discuss whether the Los Angeles Dodgers, who may not be ruining baseball, might just be ruining the National League. The Dodgers are playing for their ninth World Series championship -- a total that would tie them with the Boston Red Sox and Nomadic Athletics. It would also put them three titles shy of leapfrogging the Cardinals' historic trademark trait and overtaking them as the pre-eminent National League team when it comes to trophies. Author of "The Grandest Stage: A History of the World Series," Kepner offers perspective on the Dodgers' chances while also detailing what this World Series means to Don Mattingly and how the Blue Jays can overtake the favorites from Hollywood. There is a story about an autographed baseball, too. To quote Kepner: "Cue that jaunty music." Kepner joins the Best Podcast in Baseball from Toronto, where he's covering the World Series as a senior writer for The Athletic and baseball writer for the New York Times.
