Most parents want the roadmap — the blueprint that turns a young athlete into a confident, motivated, successful player. But very few families truly understand what the journey demands emotionally, mentally, relationally, and financially. In this episode of The Most Valuable Agent, Matt sits down with MLB All-Star Austin Riley and his parents, Mike and Elisa Riley, for an unfiltered, start-to-finish conversation about development, failure, trust, and perspective — from youth baseball to the World Series and beyond. Mike and Elisa explain why they always measured progress over promotions, how constant communication removed regret from hard decisions, and why they accepted that parts of a "normal" childhood would be missed — without ever losing alignment as a family. Austin opens up about early pro struggles, going 0-for-23 with 18 strikeouts, getting sent back to Triple-A after big league camp, and learning that failure is a skill that must be developed, not avoided. He shares how routine, patience, and learning from veterans helped him survive — and thrive — at the highest level. The conversation moves through injuries, physical evolution, learning how to train his body, and why setbacks ultimately led to him being in the best physical shape of his life. The episode closes with gratitude, favorite baseball memories, rapid-fire insights, and the lesson that ties everything together: Trust the process. This episode is essential listening for parents navigating youth baseball, recruiting, pro dreams, setbacks, injuries, pressure, and the business of sports — and a reminder that development is long, messy, and worth it when trust stays intact. Subscribe for weekly insight on player development, recruiting, and leadership lessons for parents raising athletes.   WHAT YOU'LL LEARN • Why progress matters more than promotions or timelines • How communication eliminated regret for the Riley family • Why missing "normal" childhood moments doesn't mean failure • What early pro failure actually teaches players • How 0-for-23 became a foundation moment • Why panic is more damaging than struggle • How routine separates players who last • What demotions and service-time decisions really mean • How injuries forced Austin to truly learn his body • Why setbacks often create the best versions of players • How trust is built between parents, players, and agents • What it's like turning down $100M+ — and why they did it • Why parents must stop stressing and enjoy the journey • How gratitude reframes success at every level • Why "trust the process" isn't cliché — it's survival ABOUT AUSTIN RILEY Austin Riley is an MLB All-Star third baseman for the Atlanta Braves. Drafted out of high school, Austin developed through the minor leagues before becoming one of the game's most consistent hitters. Known for his even-keeled demeanor, work ethic, and professionalism, his journey reflects resilience through failure, mastery of routine, and trust in long-term development. ABOUT MIKE & ELISA RILEY Mike and Elisa Riley are the parents of MLB All-Star Austin Riley. Mike, a former college baseball player, emphasized fundamentals, routine, and progress over outcomes. Elisa provided balance, perspective, and emotional grounding — reminding families that the journey moves fast and should be enjoyed. Together, they model how families can support elite development without panic, pressure, or regret. ABOUT MATT HANNAFORD Matt Hannaford is a 25-year MLB agent and founder of Aligned Sports. The Reds won the World Series 50 years ago in a classic highlighted by the amazing game six eventually won by the Red Sox on the foul-pole hitting HR by Carlton Fisk in the 12th inning. Prior to that, legend has it that Pete Rose said to Fisk  "Man, isn't this the most exciting game you've ever played in?”. Rose had a knack for being in the moment and enjoying this game called baseball more than maybe any player that ever lived. And Sports Illustrated rewarded him at the end of the year by naming him “Sportsman of the Year”. Rose was at the top of his game, beloved by not only fans of the Big Red Machine, but baseball fans everywhere. His popularity transcended the game, as he was an everyday man, who played the game the right way. His work ethic and daily grind were legendary and he resonated with a great amount of folks whose lives were built around that same dedication to whatever their profession was. He was the working mans idol. Everyone could relate to this kid who was born on the wrong side of Cincinnati and was now the king of the town.  A 44-game hitting streak in 1978 captured the attention of the nation before he left Cincy for Philly the following year, helping the Phils win a World Series in 1980… the 3rd and final championship of his career. He returned to the Reds as a player manager and in 1985 became the the game's all-time leader in hits before retiring as a player a year later with a still record of 4,256 knocks. And then it all came crumbling down. Keith O'Brien is also a kid from Cincinnati who grew up watching Rose in his latter years  and chronicled his entire life in his bestselling book, “Charlie Hustle: The Rise and Fall of Pete Rose, and the Last Glory Days of Baseball.” It goes into great detail about Rose's humble beginnings, how he got the nickname Charlie Hustle from two of the game's greats, Mickey Mantle and Whitey Ford, and how his prowess as one of the greatest players of all-time made him one of the game's most popular players of the 20th century. But O'Brien also did countless research into Rose's gambling addiction, the people that he associated with and the eventual suspension and expulsion from baseball. He joins us on POP to discuss at length in great passion how this man of the people who was adored by legions of fans everywhere would fall from grace, and end up on the outside of the Hall of Fame looking in… literally. It's a tragic tale of the American Dream going awry. A kid who had nothing but grit and determination turns himself into one of the greatest ballplayers of all-time, only to let his addiction to betting… and betting on the game he lived for...keep him away from the thing he loved most… baseball. Join us as we look back on the year Rose was at this top his game… 1975… and the decline that would take place a decade later as we talk with Keith O'Brien to discuss his book, “Charlie Hustle: The Rise and Fall of Pete Rose and the Last Glory Days of Baseball,” on the Past Our Prime podcast. In this heated segment, Marc Malusis validates the "championship or bust" frustration of the Yankee faithful while delivering a sobering reality check on the modern MLB. Malusis acknowledges the tactical blunders—specifically the questionable use of Nestor Cortes in the World Series and the failed Devin Williams experiment—but argues that the issue is systemic. He asserts that the Yankees no longer grade their season on rings alone, instead valuing Boone's ability to manage massive egos and navigate an analytics-heavy front office. While Malusis admits he wants more than just "competitive" seasons, he explains that in 2025, Boone is exactly the type of "player-first" manager the organization refuses to move on from, regardless of the postseason results.
