The 5 Minute Basketball Coaching Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 26, 2026 8:39

https://teachhoops.com/ How quickly can one basketball game become an entire story in an athlete's mind? A player has a great opening night and thinks, “This is finally my year.” Another struggles and immediately thinks, “Here we go again.” A player gets fewer minutes than expected and decides the coach no longer believes in them. A teammate has a breakout game and suddenly someone else begins wondering whether they are falling behind. In this episode, Coach Collins explores one of the most important mental-performance lessons athletes and coaches can learn: one game is evidence, not a conclusion. The problem is not that athletes have emotions after competition. That is completely normal. The problem begins when those emotions start creating conclusions that the available evidence does not actually support. One poor shooting night becomes “I'm not a good shooter.” One turnover becomes “I can't handle pressure.” One change in playing time becomes “Coach doesn't trust me.” Coach Collins explains why athletes need to learn the difference between what actually happened and the story they are telling themselves about what happened. Those are two very different things. This episode introduces a simple method athletes can use following games. Create two lists. On the first, write only the facts of the performance: minutes played, shots taken, defensive communication, turnovers, effort, body language, and specific moments. On the second, write the interpretations your mind immediately wants to create. Seeing those two lists next to each other can be powerful. The first contains evidence. The second contains a story. Coach Collins also challenges athletes to approach performance more like scientists. Good scientists do not perform one experiment and immediately announce a conclusion. They gather information, look for patterns, remain curious, make adjustments, and continue testing. Athletes can do the same thing. Instead of asking, “What does this performance say about me?” ask, “What is this performance teaching me?” One question pushes athletes toward identity and judgment. The other pushes them toward curiosity, development, and growth. And this lesson matters after great games too. Athletes can become just as trapped by positive conclusions as negative ones. One great performance does not mean everything is solved. Celebrate it, enjoy it, and then study what created it so those behaviors can be repeated. For coaches, the message is equally important. Our reactions help determine the story athletes attach to their performances. Correct mistakes. Hold standards. Teach the game. But do not allow one performance to become an athlete's identity. A season is long. Roles change. Players develop. Confidence moves up and down. There will be great nights and difficult ones. The athletes who continue to improve are usually the ones who remain curious long enough to learn from all of them. One performance should never tell an athlete who they are. It should tell them what they can learn next. basketball coaching, basketball leadership, mental performance, athlete mindset, sports psychology, coaching athletes, basketball confidence, handling bad games, athlete self-awareness, player development, basketball mental toughness, performance anxiety, overcoming mistakes, basketball season, coaching confidence, athlete identity, growth mindset, basketball coaches, high school basketball, youth basketball coaching, player confidence, learning from failure, coaching mistakes, sports performance, basketball podcast, TeachHoops Keywords Learn more about your ad choices. On this week's episode of The Joy of Football Podcast, Martin Tyler joins Neil Barnett from Atlanta as England prepare for a mouthwatering FIFA World Cup semi-final against Argentina, with a place in the 2026 World Cup Final at stake. The pair begin with Voice of Passion, where Neil argues that Jude Bellingham has now completed the journey from prodigious talent to genuine world-class footballer. Martin explains why Bellingham's consistency, personality and influence have elevated him into football's elite, before the discussion widens to Harry Kane's tournament, Spain's outstanding young defender Pau Cubarsí, and whether the expanded 48-team FIFA World Cup has actually allowed the game's biggest stars to shine brighter than ever. In Martin's Letter From The Gantry, Martin reflects on the positives of the 2026 FIFA World Cup as the tournament enters its final week. From the spectacular stadiums across the United States, Canada and Mexico, to advances in semi-automated offside technology, improved playing surfaces and innovations in broadcasting, he explains why this World Cup may ultimately be remembered as a landmark tournament despite the controversy surrounding its expansion. Martin also shares behind-the-scenes stories from working alongside Andy Townsend and Matt Holland for HBS, and reveals why Dallas and Atlanta have left such a lasting impression. The episode concludes with One Game, Many Comparisons, as Martin and Neil embark on an ambitious journey through every FIFA World Cup Final since 1954. From Ferenc Puskás and Hungary's Miracle of Bern, Pelé's emergence as football's first global superstar, Garrincha, Paolo Rossi, Diego Maradona and Franz Beckenbauer, to Johan Cruyff's Total Football, Zinedine Zidane's genius, Ronaldo's redemption, Brazil's golden generations and Germany's remarkable consistency, the pair debate the greatest players, greatest teams and defining moments in World Cup history. Along the way, they revisit England's 1966 triumph, Argentina's controversial 1978 victory, the tactical evolution of the modern game, and ask the ultimate footballing question: Pelé or Maradona? It's another packed episode celebrating the history of the FIFA World Cup, featuring football nostalgia, tactical insight, broadcasting stories and fascinating debate from two men who have spent a lifetime immersed in the world's greatest sporting event. #FIFAWorldCup #WorldCup2026 #FootballPodcast #MartinTyler #JudeBellingham #HarryKane #England #ThreeLions #Argentina #Brazil #Pele #DiegoMaradona #WorldCupHistory #FootballHistory #GOATDebate #Football #Soccer #JoyOfFootball #JoyOfFootballPodcast #WorldCupFinal Hosted by The Revive Lounge Ltd UCsdye1hUxP4xhgBx9zvuSjg Subscribe to https://youtube.com/@TheReviveLounge?si=L5ddzrJrtSmErtJ5 Support the Pod https://patreon.com/TheJoysofFootballPodcast?utm_medium=unknown&utm_source=join_link&utm_campaign=creatorshare_creator&utm_content=copyLink Read us on Substack https://martintylerandneilbarnett.substack.com/ Follow our Twitter https://x.com/TheJOF Follow our Tik Tok https://www.tiktok.com/@joy_of_football_pod?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc Follow our Instagram https://https://www.instagram.com/joy_of_football_pod/ Contact us via: therevivelounge@gmail.com Music by Arron Clague - https://www.instagram.com/arronclague?igsh=aHg1bjQ3OHpmaXIz Intro Sequence by Wellong Sadewo (wells.illustration): https://www.instagram.com/wells.illustration/ A massive thank you to our Patreon Supporters: Nick Parmenter Hillary Abbott Daniel Butigan Tommy Mck Katie Watson Nathan A Learn more about your ad choices. Send us Fan MailOne game can erase months of work, and that reality changes how coaches think. We're joined by Chris Stewart, head baseball coach at Eastern High School in Ohio and host of the Coaching Life Podcast, just hours before his team plays for a district championship. With the single elimination state tournament underway, we talk about what actually holds up when every pitch feels like it weighs a ton: simple plans, calm decisions, and a team that stays itself under pressure. Chris shares a coaching mistake that still follows him, a postseason pitching sequence that looked smart on paper and blew up in real time. We dig into the messy truth behind pitch counts, managing arms for “the next game,” and the domino effect one extra-inning night can create. If you coach high school baseball, Legion, or travel ball, this is the kind of story that makes you rethink how you define risk, leverage, and trust in the moment. We also go personal on one of the toughest roles in sports: coaching your own son. Chris explains why the middle ground is the hardest place to live and how clear communication and consistent standards are the only way through. From there, we zoom out into youth baseball culture, parent behavior, and why perspective changes everything when you have a vested interest in your kid's at-bats. Finally, we tackle player development and the overcoaching problem: why great mechanics aren't enough, how hitters need approach and decision-making, and what “compete” looks like when the pitcher is trying to get you out. If you care about building better players and a stronger program, subscribe, share the show with another coach, and leave us a review.Support the showFollow:  X | Instagram @Athlete1Podcast Website - https://www.athlete1.netSponsor: The Netting Professionalshttps://www.nettingpros.com

We get into why the data and the eye test tell completely different stories, the Enzo Fernández screamer and the Kinsky question, the front-three problem and an honest defence of Richarlison, the VAR decisions still baffling us — the Delap elbow, the Cucurella booking that makes no sense — and what fans can realistically do about officiating. Plus the most honest question of the season from Oso 33 member Howard: have Spurs ever stressed you this much, and how are you coping? A point against Everton on Sunday and we're safe. The Originals is the panel show from Oh So Spurs — higher-quality, more nuanced fan content from people who've actually been through this season. Smarter than the angry-pundit register, but still fans, with the cautious belief that comes with it. If you got something out of the episode, please follow the show, drop us a rating, and share it with a Spurs fan who needs to get through to Sunday. And to the OhSo33 crew, keep it lily-white. Arsenal arrive at match 37 knowing only a win will do. Two points clear, two games left, one goal behind on goal difference — the context is everything. Gavin, Elliot, and Justin open by unpacking a lineup that raises as many questions as it answers. Havertz up top, Eze and Ødegaard in midfield together, Cristhian Mosquera at right back — it's a selection with ambition baked in, but the balance debate starts immediately. The first half is where the episode lives longest. Arsenal are dominant, chances arrive, and the hosts walk through a sequence of missed opportunities and near-misses that paint a picture of a side that should have been out of sight. Then comes the moment that defines the conversation around officiating — a foul on Saka that every player on the pitch apparently recognises, waved away, and left alone by VAR. The hosts don't let it go quickly, and nor should they. The goal, when it comes, is a set piece. Saka's delivery, Havertz rising, and a celebration that starts before the ball lands. A moment of clarity in an episode full of tension. The second half shifts the texture of the review. A Havertz challenge on Lesley Ugochukwu dominates the discussion — studs down, no force, the ref waves it on, VAR stays silent. The hosts are divided on whether fortune or officiating is the bigger factor, and the broader conversation about how referees and VAR interact becomes one of the episode's most structured debates. Two significant calls in one game, both wrong — the mechanics of why get a full airing.Burnley's physical approach and the referee's willingness to allow it runs as a thread throughout, culminating in a wider reckoning with refereeing consistency and the narrative pundits and commentators build around it.After the match is wrapped, the hosts pull back. The stats versus feelings disconnect — a dominant display that felt like a stress test — opens a broader conversation about what this Arsenal side has become, and why each win in the run-in feels harder than it should. From playing to the level of the opposition, to the gradual erosion of freedom in Arsenal's play across three seasons, to whether this is now Arteta's Premier League — the second half of the episode carries real weight. It ends on Palace. One game. Everything still to play for.Chapters:(00:00) - Arteta's Non-Negotiables & Intro(00:18) - Match Review Setup & Title Race Context(01:01) - Lineup Debate: Brave or Unbalanced?(03:39) - Arsenal's Strong Opening & Early Chances(05:55) - The Penalty That Wasn't(09:17) - 1-0 | Havertz Heads Arsenal In Front(10:35) - Half-Time Reflections & First Half Dominance(12:13) - Second Half Chances & Frustrations(13:25) - Havertz Red Card Escape(15:07) - Refereeing Standards & VAR Consistency Debate(22:47) - Burnley Physicality & Game Management(24:14) - A Win, Mosquera's Footwork & Hincapié's Moon(26:10) - Match Stats & Arsenal Control Analysis(27:28) - Pressure, Palace & Title Race Tension(28:35) - Do Arsenal Play To The Level Of The Opposition?(30:29) - The Freedom That's Gradually Gone(34:11) - Is This Arteta's Premier League?(37:39) - Will Arteta Ever Receive Full Credit?(38:45) - Fan Culture & the Emirates Transformation(41:05) - Wenger Era vs Arteta Era Supporter Culture(43:38) - Arteta's Cultural Impact On Arsenal(47:03) - Come On Bournemouth(49:41) - One Game From Glory, Two From History(50:18) - Outro
