In our most anticipated episode yet, Fran & I are joined by our new friend Sarah Roberts, Chaplain of the Oklahoma Sooners softball team that keeps winning the College World Series and keeps going viral for proclaiming Jesus in their press conferences! You will love this conversation full of beautiful, profound truth including: how each of us can serve God in our sphere of influence where to begin if you are new to bible study the two books Sarah reads every year & her favorite bible commentary (great Christmas gift ideas!) the story of Bezalel (ever heard of him?? Yeah we hadn't either...) how to evaluate the spiritual health of a team/individual & why it matters five ways we can teach our young people how to shine, show and share Jesus. Sarah is a coach's wife, coach's daughter, and her life has literally been changed through Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) where she now serves on staff in the very ministry that led her to Jesus. Sarah is in demand across the country, recently asked to speak encouragement to Coach Dabo Swinney and his Clemson football team, and she has regular bible studies with wives of NFL & NBA players, management and staff including the Chicago Bulls, Philadelphia Eagles, and New York Jets. Y'all will love how relatable and wise she truly is, and we are so excited to share this episode with you! Learn more about our local Southwest TN FCA by clicking here or contact Fran or Angela for more info! FCA Vision : To see the world transformed by Jesus Christ through the influence of coaches and athletes. FCA Mission: To lead every coach and athlete into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ and His church. Sarah's favorite bible study tools: Seamless by Angie Smith The Bible Recap by Tara-Leigh Cobble The Tony Evans Bible Commentary If you are new to bible reading, Sarah always recommends beginning with three books of the Bible: John (a gospel that tells Jesus' story relationally) Romans (a summary of the gospel reminding us we all fall short) James (how to live a Christian life, written by Jesus' half-brother) Two books Sarah reads every single year to rest her heart and mind (both by Alicia Britt Chole): 40 Days of Decrease: a Different Kind of Hunger..a Different Kind of Fast Anonymous: Jesus' Hidden Years...and Yours.... "We live in fast rhythms. This is an intentional way to reset, renew and be reminded that God is God and we are not him." Sarah's recommendation for leaders - how to lead from a healthy soul: Replenish by Lance Witt Sarah has a sign in her office that says "Studying the word of God is my passion, teaching it is my gift, but living it is my calling" We can impress people with our strengths but we connect with people through our struggles. God has given every single one of us a sphere of influence. Open your bible and start right there. Be intentional and look at the influence he has given you and how he wants to use you right there for his kingdom. One thing everybody has in common is we all want to be seen. Jesus was so good at sitting one on one and asking the right questions to make people feel seen and heard and valued. We can't lead others until we learn how to follow. If we want to lead others to Jesus, we have to first learn how to follow him. A Japanese pitching prospect gets Connor excited about the potential of a truly global collegiate sport
Growing up in Casper Wyoming, Mike Lansing played every sport. He could have played football in college but opted to go the baseball route and chose Wichita State. Turned out to be a good move as the Shockers won their first ever College World Series with Mike as their shortstop. In 1990, while his college teammates were getting drafted by MLB teams, Mike got drafted by the Maimi Miracle, an independent minor league team, that basically utilized a never before used loophole to get players. He was baffled but kept playing and eventually got to the Montreal Expos, where he got his MLB debut and was also traded to the Rockies after 5 seasons. Mike expected that trade because it was typical of the Expos. What he didn't expect was when Colorado traded him mid-season in 2000 to the Red Sox. He was shocked, but stayed professional and proved himself in Boston. In retirement, Mike is a “girl dad” to a young adult and teenager, plays golf around the Denver area as often as he can and still loves talking baseball.
George Horton was born and raised in Downey, California and graduated from Downey High School in 1971. He played on the Cerritos College baseball team in 1972 and 1973 under coach Wally Kincaid. Horton then played two seasons under head coach Augie Garrido at Cal State Fullerton in 1975 and 1976. He was on the Fullerton team that made the school's first appearance in the College World Series in 1975. Horton began his coaching career the same place he began his collegiate playing career, Cerritos College. He coached there for two seasons before moving onto Los Angeles Valley College. From there he went back to Cerritos College as an assistant before eventually becoming the head coach. He was later hired by his former coach, Augie Garrido, to be an assistant at Cal State Fullerton. When Garrido left in 1996, Horton was hired to replace him. In 2003, Horton was named 2003 National Coach of the Year by Baseball America. In 2004, Horton would face off against his old boss in the 2004 College World Series championship series. The Fullerton Titans won the series and the national championship. While at CSF Coach Horton record was 490–212–1. In September 2007, Horton was named the head coach of the University of Oregon, which reinstated its baseball program starting in the 2009 season after being a club sport since 1982. In his first season at the helm of the Ducks the team was 14–42. In 2010, Horton led the Ducks to the NCAA Division I baseball Tournament for the first time since 1964. The 2010 Ducks baseball team finished the season with a 40–24 overall record. He finished with a record of 375–281–1. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/matt-brown57/support

The college softball offseason is in full swing with transfers finding new homes, teams starting to take shape and new rules coming down from the NCAA. The picture of 2024 for the Florida State Seminoles and everyone else is starting to come into focus. As we wait on Team 41 to open their season, the Seminole Softball Wrap podcast crew — Gwyn Rhodes and Brian Pellerin — sought out national college softball writer Brady Vernon of D1Softball.com to discuss the stories of the offseason so far. Covered in this episode: Transfer Portal The biggest moves of the new year so far are centered around the Oklahoma Sooners. One of the best pitchers in the sport out, another in... and then some. Gwyn and Brian get Brady's perspective on Jordy Bahl's move to Nebraska, Kelly Maxwell's jump across the state of Oklahoma to try and fill Bahl's shoes, Alana Vawter's move to the SEC and more. Does he see this as a weakening of college softball's dominant force? Who are the teams that currently could push OU for the Women's College World Series this year? Florida State The Noles are of course among that crew. They've built a powerhouse program perpetually in the top ten with the goal of OKC every year. But how does that translate to their national reputation? Brady sure thinks so, saying he believes OU fans look at FSU as their biggest competition each season and the program consistently pushing to compete. 2024 won't be much different. The lineup is largely back so the bats should continue to find ways. In the circle, losing Kat Sandercock will hurt, but Brady has confidence in the growth of Makenna Reid into that role. Plus there's another pitcher that he thinks is ready to find that stride in Tallahassee this season. Conference Realignment The Big Ten and the Big 12 have raided the Pac-12 leaving no conference left with a west coast base. It's a move driven by football that will almost certainly have impacts on softball as well. The west coast used to run the sport and recruiting it well remains crucial to a strong program. Could the loss of a regional conference on the west coast open the door to more teams recruiting out there? And does the SEC gain an advantage as the only truly regional conference. New Rules for 2024 The NCAA released some new rules for the upcoming season including limits on assistant coaches interacting with umpires, the addition of the PitchCom system to relay pitches/plays like MLB has added, changes to the pitching mechanic rules around airborne feet and some replay review changes. Brady shares his thoughts on what catches his eye as the changes most likely to impact the sport people going forward. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

One of the hardest things to do in life, but especially in sports, is to wait your turn. We often hear the cliché statement “patience is a virtue” but oh how easy it can be to jump straight into panic mode. However, we must remember that God's promises are often found in the midst of His processes. Maybe what feels like a waiting or wilderness season in your life is really a season of productivity and preparation. Today's guest is someone who has committed himself to this process of progress, growth, and development in every facet of his life. Joining us today is an incredibly talented college baseball player and College World Series Champion, Mic Paul. In today's episode you will hear how God is continuing to teach and reveal Himself to Mic through the lessons he's learned in both mountain top as well as waiting seasons. The ultimate theme you'll hear threaded throughout this entire conversation: If it isn't good yet, then God is not done yet! Keep on keeping on, friend! Your breakthrough or defining moment may be just around the corner. Other Podcast featuring Mic Paul: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWH-SJtgxPE

Jared Wegner's journey hasn't been a straight line. And he's perfectly OK with that, knowing how things have turned out. Wegner's baseball life started from a young age in Kearney, Nebraska, and even included a trip to Williamsport to play in the Little League World Series. But excelling in Little League doesn't guarantee a shot at major college baseball. Wegner ended up at Creighton, where he battled injuries but eventually became a top player for the Blue Jays—all while watching big-time programs play right there in Omaha at the College World Series. So, with a grad transfer available, Wegner bet on himself, and ended up at Arkansas. The hard work paid off for Wegner, who overcame a hand injury in the middle of the season and became a major player for one of the top programs in the country. As Wegner prepares to begin his professional journey, he knows what it takes to succeed at the highest levels, and owes it, in part, to his time with the Hogs.
