Franco is also an adjunct Professor of Sustainability Management at Columbia university and the author of “In Search of the. Perfect Peach” his book which talks about food supply and why flavour is so key in our diet.Natoora did not start on the side, but as a response to a life long passion and a decision that this thing needed to exist in the world.I wanted to speak to Franco as this podcast is all about following your curiosities and passions and making them your life's work - something Franco has done, but in a different way. In this episode we'll talk about why the food system is so broken and what we can do about it, why he moved from finance to groceries and why a gnawing sense of dissatisfaction every four weeks at work drove him to make changes, and the surprising things he learnt from a lunch with the founder of Patagonia. I hope you enjoy!P.S. We recorded this in their shop on an early morning in Bermondsey, surrounded by Radiccio and blood oranges. On the latest episode of Bingeworthy, host Mike DeAngelo dives into the violent and dysfunctional criminal underworld of "MobLand," the new hit Paramount+ series that blends London gangster drama with Shakespearean tragedy. The series stars Tom Hardy as Harry Da Souza, a streetwise fixer trying to hold his mob family together as rival clans threaten to tear everything apart. The show also features standout performances from Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Paddy Considine, and more (read our review here). While the opening scenes showcase Hardy's character executing brutal clean-up jobs with unnerving calm, the show slowly peels back the layers of its characters, revealing deep family wounds, conflicting loyalties, and a criminal hierarchy on the verge of collapse. As Hardy described it, "It may be wrapped up in a gangster genre, but there's a lot more going on… It's like 'Game of Thrones' in Bermondsey.”

For sixteen years, his undead reign brought terror to the living and torment to his widow. But when the villagers finally rose against him, they unearthed a horror beyond imagination. (Jure Grando: The First Vampire) *** For nearly a millennium, a monstrous black dog with eyes like burning coals has stalked the foggy coastlines and ancient churches of East Anglia, leaving death and terror in its silent wake. From its first recorded appearance in 1127 where it led a spectral hunting party through Peterborough, to its most infamous attack in 1577 when it allegedly killed four churchgoers, the creature known as Black Shuck has become far more than just another ghost story. Through centuries of sightings and evolving folklore, this massive demon hound has transformed from a Viking guardian spirit into one of Britain's most enduring legends - one that some locals insist still prowls the shadows of Norfolk and Suffolk to this day. (Black Shuck: East Anglia's Demon Hound) *** In 1857 London, the Bacon family's home became the center of supernatural chaos when mysterious sounds and flying objects drew crowds of over a thousand spectators to their modest Bermondsey residence. But when thirteen-year-old Caroline confessed to creating the ghostly disturbances using strands of hair to topple objects, her deception was revealed as an act of rebellion against her father and new stepmother. This tale of a fake haunting offers a poignant glimpse into Victorian family dynamics and the desperate measures one girl took to assert her independence. (The Bermondsey Poltergeist) *** In October 1975, what began as a late-night drive for two young men in rural Maine turned into an encounter that would haunt them forever. David Stephens had no memory of being taken aboard a massive UFO by mushroom-headed beings until months later, when hypnosis sessions revealed the terrifying truth about the hours he lost that night – an experience so profound that it would drive his friend Glen to flee the state and change both their lives forever. (Night of the Mushroom Men) *** Could the Moon's perfect positioning—exactly 400 times smaller than the Sun and precisely placed for total eclipses—be more than cosmic coincidence? Authors Christopher Knight and Alan Butler propose a mind-bending theory: that future humans (or their advanced robots) traveled back in time 4.6 billion years to construct the Moon, creating the exact conditions needed for life on Earth to emerge. Their provocative hypothesis suggests we might be caught in an infinite loop, with humanity traveling to the past to ensure its own creation, much like the ancient symbol of Ouroboros—a snake eternally consuming its own tail. Reel Britannia podcast - a very British podcast about very British movies...with just a hint of professionalism. Scott and Steven are joined this week by their dear friend Mark, host of The Good, The Bad and The Odd podcast, to chat about a touching, bittersweet journey of friendship and regret, as four old friends fulfill a promise to scatter their late friend's ashes. Last Orders (2001)   "Last Orders" (2001), directed by Fred Schepisi, is a poignant drama centered around a group of lifelong friends fulfilling their deceased friend's final wish. The story revolves around four aging men—Ray (Bob Hoskins), Lenny (David Hemmings), Vic (Tom Courtenay), and Vince (Ray Winstone)—who embark on a journey to scatter the ashes of their friend Jack Dodds (Michael Caine) in the sea at Margate, following his last orders. Jack, a butcher and a pub regular, left behind his widow, Amy (Helen Mirren), who is still grappling with the loss and her own regrets. As the men travel from Bermondsey to Margate, they make several stops significant to their shared history. Each stop triggers memories and flashbacks, revealing their past experiences, relationships, and the complicated dynamics between them. These flashbacks feature a younger version of Jack (JJ Feild), his friends, and his family, providing a deeper understanding of their connections and the life they led. Ray, Jack's best friend and a bookie, reflects on his unrequited love for Jack's wife, Amy, and his own failed marriage. Lenny, a former boxer, grapples with the loss of his son and his troubled relationship with his daughter. Vic, the quiet undertaker, contemplates the significance of life and death, while Vince, Jack's adopted son, struggles with his feelings of inadequacy and the pressure of living up to his father's expectations. As the journey progresses, the men confront their own insecurities, secrets, and unresolved issues. They share stories, argue, and ultimately bond over their shared grief and memories of Jack. Along the way, they visit landmarks such as the war memorial, the pub where they spent countless hours, and the racetrack where Jack placed his bets. Each location holds a piece of their collective past, evoking nostalgia and reflection. In the end, the men reach Margate and scatter Jack's ashes into the sea, honoring his final request. This act of closure allows them to find peace and move forward, forever changed by the journey and the memories they shared with their dear friend. "Last Orders" is a touching exploration of friendship, loss, and the passage of time, beautifully capturing the essence of life's fleeting moments and the impact of enduring bonds. Leyla Kazim traces the journey of this unassuming wonder food, from its health benefits to its origins. Nuts, which once would have been central to the diet of our ancestors, are now often treated as a nice-to-have health choice. It's a food we need to reconnect with, and to do so, we can learn from both the latest science and other food cultures. Leyla hears from Professor Sarah Berry of King's College London, who has studied how the form in which we eat nuts - whole, ground, in butters or milks - affects how much of their benefits we receive. Swapping nuts for your daily snack, however you eat them, could help reduce cholesterol and blood pressure, as Sarah explains. As health benefit messages around nuts take off, there has been a huge boom in demand. But what's the impact of this on the world's nut farmers, traders and environment? Without much origin information provided on nut packs, Leyla sets off to find some answers of her own. And her journey takes her across the world: from cashew plantations in west Africa, processing plants in south East Asia, markets in Turkey and walnut orchards in Kent. Not to mention a little diversion into California's organised crime rings. Because there is another story here about how high demand has a price. She spends a day with Charlie Tebbutt, founder of Food & Forest and one of the only companies to be actively selling British-grown nuts. Charlie also buys direct from other growers around the world, who are using a sustainable farming system called agroforestry, to preserve water, improve soil and diversify their income. Charlie is about to open a first-of-its-kind processing facility in Bermondsey, south London, where he hopes to de-shell and process British-grown hazelnuts in way that improves quality and allows the industry to scale up. Leyla visits his walnut orchards in Kent to ask: could British nuts ever replace imports? If we're trying to eat more nuts, there is also much to be learned from other countries. Specifically Turkey, where nuts are revered as a cornerstone of the cuisine and food culture. Leyla meets Turkish food writer and chef Ozlem Warren in her local Turkish supermarket, to reminisce over the Turkish 'green emerald' pistachios, green almonds and fresh walnuts, which are enjoyed by Turks in sweet or savoury dishes, at celebrations or indeed, at any other time of day. Presented by Leyla Kazim and produced by Nina Pullman for BBC Audio in Bristol.

Representing the next generation of glass talent, Rawlinson combines innovative approach and vibrant compositions to offer a fresh perspective, challenging conventional boundaries and resonating with today's artistic landscape. Layton, a veteran in the glass world, has captivated audiences for decades with his bold, expressive works. His 50-year journey from the studio's beginnings on the Thames to international acclaim highlights his role in elevating glass art.  Born in Prague in 1937, Layton is one of Europe's pre-eminent glass designers. He has directly influenced several of his country's leading glassmakers and inspired many more. Arriving in England in 1939, there he began his education. While at grammar school, he met another boy who had also won the attention of his art teacher – his name was David Hockney. Layton attended Bradford Art College, then went to London's Central School of Art and Design, to specialize in ceramics, where he was taught by several of the most respected potters of the time.  On graduating, Layton was offered a teaching job in Iowa University's Ceramics Department. Once in the US, in 1966, he participated in one of the first experimental glass workshops with Harvey Littleton and was bewitched by the immediacy and spontaneity of hot glass. He went on to expand his connections and friendships on this side of the pond to include participating in a Los Angeles exhibition with Marvin Lipofsky, a San Francisco show with pop artist Mel Ramos, and an exhibition at The Art Institute of Chicago with Viola Frey. Back in Britain, in 1969 Layton helped Sam Herman build the first furnace at the Glasshouse in Covent Garden, and he subsequently established his own small glass studio at Morar in the Highlands of Scotland, a Glass Department at Hornsey College of Art (Middlesex University) and, in 1976, the London Glassblowing Workshop in an old towage works on the Thames at Rotherhithe. In 2009 Layton's London Glassblowing Studio and Gallery moved to much larger premises in Bermondsey. Since its opening, London Glassblowing has nurtured and produced some of the world's leading glass artists, including (most recently) Elliot Walker of Netflix Blown Away fame. Layton's colorful and painterly works of glass art can be found in numerous public and private collections, both at home and abroad, including the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. He has exhibited widely both nationally and internationally, receiving an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Bradford for his contribution to arts and crafts in Britain. Layton is also the founder of the Contemporary Glass Society, which is Britain's foremost organization supporting and championing the work of glass artists, both established and new. A vigorous proponent of glassblowing as an art form, Layton has authored several books, become an Honorary Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Glass Sellers, an Honorary life member of the Contemporary Glass Society as well as been given the Freedom of the City of London.  Layton has always taken inspiration from his environment, natural or manmade: a stone wall on a snowy day, the London skyline, or works by great painters. From a mere detail, a flash of a Klimt orange or a slick of oil on the Thames, he creates painterly works with a masterly use of color. The artist is inspired by whatever is around him. For example, during the winter of 2009, the heavy snow turned his long commute by train into an intriguing black and white world full of movement and texture, shaping his recent Glacier series. He has also created a number of conceptual pieces that reflect his specific concerns with issues such as ecology, religion and racial conflict. Layton says: “A fellow artist recently described a piece that I had made for her by saying, ‘…it's as though it holds all my travels in light.' Lovely compliments like that spur me on. You never, ever create the perfect piece of glass and there are always new ideas, techniques and challenges to master. Glass is such an underrated medium – there is a fluidity and uncertainty about it that I choose to embrace rather than overcome. Every piece is an adventure.”  From October 8 – 13, 2024, PAD London returns to the iconic Berkeley Square in Mayfair, where London Glassblowing will be showcasing an extraordinary selection of work from their talented makers alongside designers and galleries from over 20 countries worldwide. To coincide with PAD and Le Verre, London Glassblowing is offering a series of exclusive events, providing a unique opportunity to explore and learn more about the captivating medium of glass. In our latest look into postwar history: decriminalising homosexuality. In 1967 — for the first time in more than 400 years — two men over 21 were legally allowed to have sex, in private, with each other. But the fight for equality was very far from won. Campaigner Peter Tatchell and Hugo Greenhalgh, whose book The Diaries of Mr Lucas: Notes from a Lost Gay Life is published this month, tell Ros Taylor what life was like for gay men in the late 20th century. It's a story of pickups in Marble Arch, vicious homophobia, and illegal liaisons with the Kray gang. • “It was an absolute goldmine of lost queer history.” – Hugo Greenhalgh • “The gay scene went from being a community of sorts to something far more commercial in the 1970s and 80s. It left Mr Lucas behind. He was always a man of the shadows.” — Hugo Greenhalgh • “In 1983 I fought the notorious Bermondsey by-election… the dirtiest, most violent and definitely most homophobic election in Britain in the 20th century. It was like living through a low-level civil war.” – Peter Tatchell • “The 1990s coincided with a huge coming out of LGBT+ people. Lucy Worsley travels back in time to revisit the unthinkable crimes of 19th century murderesses from the UK, Australia and North America. This episode sees Lucy traverse London, hot on the heels of Maria Manning, the so-called Lady Macbeth of Bermondsey, a woman who confounds expectations of respectable Victorian England. Maria shocked the nation in 1849, when she conspired with her husband to kill her lover, before stealing the dead man's money and making a break for freedom on the all-new intercity rail network. She's the inspiration for a key character in Charles Dickens' famous proto-detective novel Bleak House and her fate leads to a pivotal change in the law.To untangle this remarkable story, Lucy is joined by international literary superstar Kate Mosse, author of historical fiction novels including the Joubert Family Chronicles and founder-director of The Women's Prize for Fiction. Lucy also visits the scene of the crime and recreates Maria's escape across the capital with Lady Killers' in-house historian Professor Rosalind Crone from the Open University. They uncover a bizarre trail of evidence, including the huge stash of belongings Maria deposited at London Bridge Station as she fled London, which included 28 pairs of stockings, 11 petticoats, a teapot, an apron and several items of bloodstained clothing.Together, the team ask why the buttoned-up Victorians had such an appetite for grisly tales of lust, crime and punishment. Are the same impulses behind today's fascination with true crime? Can we respect Maria's independent spirit and sharp mind, despite what she did? Does she deserve her place in history?Produced in partnership with the Open UniversityProducer: Sarah Goodman Readers: Meena Rayann and Jonathan Keeble Sound design: Chris Maclean Series Producer: Julia HayballA StoryHunter production for BBC Radio 4New episodes will be released on Wednesday wherever you get your podcasts. Peter Tatchell is a distinguished human rights campaigner, celebrated for his unwavering dedication to advancing LGBTQI+ rights and his fervent commitment to social justice. With a career marked by courageous activism and principled advocacy, Tatchell has played an instrumental role in shaping the discourse on human rights and equality.Born in Australia, Tatchell's journey as a human rights defender took root in the United Kingdom, where he became a prominent figure in the LGBTQI+ social movements. His impact was first felt in the political arena when he was selected as the Labour Party's parliamentary candidate for Bermondsey in 1981. However, his firm support for extra-Parliamentary action against the Thatcher government led to a denouncement by party leader Michael Foot. This initial setback did not deter him; in fact, it propelled him to stand as the Labour candidate in the 1983 Bermondsey by-election. This move, though valiant, resulted in the loss of the seat to the Liberals, yet it highlighted Tatchell's resilience and determination. The 1990s marked a pivotal era in Tatchell's career, as he co-founded the direct action group OutRage! Through this platform, he spearheaded campaigns for LGBT rights that reverberated across society. One of the most notable campaigns was "Stop Murder Music," which targeted music lyrics inciting violence against the LGBTQI+ community. In this episode, Chris Maffeo spoke to Brad Crompton, Director at Spirits of Bermondsey (Trinity 25) In the hunting part of their chat, they discussed the importance of building demand before capturing it. How, by talking about the broader category, a brand can establish its relevance and make the pie bigger for others, by launching a magazine covering both alcohol-free and fully alcoholic drinks. Brad explained how they've trademarked the "session spirit" category and shifted their focus to finding bars that understand and support their vision. Instead of competing with established brands for shelf space, they aim to create a new shelf altogether where their product can thrive in its own right. We hope you enjoy the conversation. Es - Swallowed Whole from the 2023 Fantasy EP on Upset The Rhythm. London-based quartet Es burst onto the scene back in 2020 with their debut LP Less of Everything, made up of nine tracks of ominous and icy post-punk exploring the tension between intent and interpretation. Three years later, they're back with the Fantasy EP. For their new release, they've bumped the tempo up but haven't lost an ounce of sneer. Our Song of the Day “Swallowed Whole” is frantic and twitchy, with taut syncopated rhythms and pinched synths while frontperson Maria Cecilia Tedemalm sings of building anxiety that completely overwhelms. Tedemalm had this to say about the song: "Musically the writing process behind ‘Swallowed Whole' is a bit hazy for me, but I very vividly remember getting super excited when listening to the first rough demo over and over again and writing almost all the lyrics while walking to the bus stop 7 minutes from my house. Once I had the first line down the rest just came flowing. I think I had a lot of pent up frustration just itching to get out as thematically the song taps into some quite frantic and raw emotions. It's about teetering on a knife's edge and wanting to escape yourself and your current circumstances before they completely devour you. We shot the video for it at our friend's recording studio called Head Cold in Bermondsey. The idea originally was to be "Swallowed Whole" in smoke but sadly the smoke machine we borrowed wouldn't work so it came out a bit more like maybe we're playing at your highschool under the sea themed prom."
