I am delighted to welcome to the podcast Tom Hutchins from Brew By Numbers, based in Greenwich. Brew By Numbers was launched in December 2012, and continue to lead the way for hazy East Coast pale ales in the UK, and are also seen as a pioneer on issues such as the importance of freshness, beer cold storage, and continue to be a major influence on taproom culture in London. Aside from brewing amazing beer, Tom's passion is to promote a responsible link between beer and health, and it was great to catch up with him at the opening session of the BBNo Riverside Festival for an update.
I am delighted to welcome to the podcast Tom Hutchins from Brew By Numbers, based in Greenwich. Brew By Numbers was launched in December 2012, and quickly applied a scientific approach to brewing, working with split batches, in a quest for constant improvement. The numbering system attributed to these early tests gave rise to their name - Brew By Numbers. As they enter their tenth year Brew By Numbers continue to lead the way for hazy East Coast pale ales in the UK, and are also seen as a pioneer on issues such as the importance of freshness, beer cold storage, and continue to be a major influence on taproom culture in London. https://bbno.co/ Tom wholeheartedly recommends the following fine establishment: https://www.jarsbar.co.uk/
It’s just Lucy and Aadil this week, as Ben is a bit under the weather. Extensive pokemon snap chats, not to be confused with pokemon snapchat– which is just a series of filters, Pocket Watch, a duck timelooping indie, and the capitalist stock broker simulator The Invisible Hand. Lucy has Brew by Numbers 05, juicy New England IPA, and the Red Sky At Night Brewers Delight, Imperial Red Ale from Tool. Aadil has the Northern Monk Patrons Project Lei Mai-Mickipop, Cherry Cola Sour IPA, and then the Looper IPA from Full Circle Brew Co.
This week we are joined by Tom Maya from We Are Beer to talk games and share a few beers. Tom chats about the upcoming summer beer festivals We Are Beer organise and what it was like last year for the festival scene. We discuss what brewing festival collaboration beers has been like and get to know Tom through his recently played games. These include many an RPG, like Final Fantasy VII Remake and a lot of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Aadil and Lucy have also played Before Your Eyes and have high praise for GoodbyeWorld Games and Skybound Games new release. As you would expect there are eight beers discussed this week. These come from Lost & Grounded, LIC […]
This week we talk about Hades, a lot. As all three of us have played and have differing opinions we discuss it and then keep referring back to it. The episode starts with a little chat on dry January and what we’re all doing. For games, we also talk about Cyberpunk 2077 and Monster Train, both of which Aadil has played. We then ask ‘What games did you miss from 2020?’ and ‘What are you looking forward to in 2021?’. Also, Ben has a new computer so of course, his audio is garbage. Ben has the one beer the ‘Canadian Breakfast’ from Brew By Numbers whilst Aadil drinks Arbor Ales ‘Pocket Rocket’ and ‘Komtur’ from Browar Gościszewo.
I’m Natalya Watson, and you’re listening to the Good Beer Hunting podcast. My guests today are Miranda Hudson and Derek Bates, co-founders of Duration Brewing, a progressive farmhouse brewery in Norfolk, England. Bates—known mononymously to most—left his post as head brewer at London’s Brew By Numbers in late 2016 to set out on his own. He’d had an idea kicking around for years, but in 2017, he and his wife, Miranda, put their plan into action. Wanting to be a bit out of the way, they found a site among the ruins of a 12th-century priory in West Acre, Norfolk. But the rather challenging location required a year-and-a-half of planning before the build began in late 2018 and finally completed nearly a year later. During this time, Duration began brewing collaboratively and nomadically with breweries across the U.K. and beyond. Not only did this approach get their beer out there, it got them out there, too. Miranda and Bates became familiar faces to members of the U.K. beer industry, many of whom got enthusiastically involved in following the pair and their progress, which was frequently documented on their website and social media. Now that they’re finally brewing in their own facility, as of October 2019, the goal for this first year was, as you’ll hear, for Bates to have the chance to experiment. That wouldn’t just enable him to showcase his breadth as a brewer, the thinking went, but to discover which styles were a hit for the brewery, and to decide which journeys they wanted to take their drinkers on away from the Pale Ale and IPA monoculture, as Bates calls it. But only five months after they settled into their brand-new brewery, COVID-19 hit. While it certainly hasn’t been the first year they were expecting—with a market too unstable to truly fine-tune their core range, and a destination brewery most are unable visit—they talk me through their initial response to the pandemic. They discuss the challenges (and triumphs) they’ve faced, from their wholesale model becoming essentially unviable overnight to how they were able to get their online shop up and running with the flick of a switch to why they’ve taken their brewery tours online, essentially welcoming drinkers into their “home,” as Miranda puts it. Miranda and Bates aren’t just business partners: They’re life partners and parents, too. You’ll hear, in earnest, some of the challenges they’re up against at the moment. But you’ll also hear how they’re looking ahead. Not just beyond COVID, but five, 10 years down the line. Even during this incredibly difficult time for the industry, they’ve doubled down—expanding not only their capacity, but their team, too. They tell us about the breweries in the United States they’re inspired by, what sets Duration apart, and the legacy they’re looking to leave behind. This is Miranda Hudson and Derek Bates of Duration Brewing. Listen in.

DON'T FORGET - LINKS TO ALL BEERS AND PUBS WE MENTION CAN BE FOUND ON OUR WEBSITE - www.pubtrotters.wordpress.com In our 2ND JULY EPISODE (that's right we did two because we love it so much), Pubtrotters Pubcast were at the wonderful (https://www.brewbynumbers.com)Brew by Numbers Peckham Barrel Store, a taproom underneath Peckham Rye arches. This month, Roxy is joined by fellow pubtrotters Niall and Sonia (Sonia's first time), Nick can't make it, as you'll hear, he was off playing Mario Kart. The hosts gathered, as usual, at early doors and discussed pineapple curry (not recommended), how Italians drink more beer than Brits and a useful, not so useful beer map. In Beer lovers corner we were joined by Floris, who is the Head of all retail at Brew by Numbers and shares his expertise and love of warm beer with us.

March 2019 we were honoured to be invited to JB's Ultimate Meet the Makers Dinner to interview some of the visiting brewers, distillers and some of our own. We dig into the origin story behind some of our favourite brands, learn how a BBQ powered Still is as bad an idea as it sounds and take a look at what's coming up for Jersey's newest brewers, Bliss Brewing Co. In this second episode of Small Batch we present those interviews to you featuring Kew Gardens Organic, Rebel Rabbet, Brew By Numbers,Tiny Rebel Brewing Co., Electric Bear Brewing, Bliss Brewing Co.
Not only have we all managed to get together, but we’ve all played the same game and discuss, at length, Donut County. We move into a discussion about expensive beer following an article in the Sun and a rebuttal by Tiny Rebel Brewing. As Ben has only played Donut County this week Aadil swiftly jumps into his thoughts on the Magic: The Gathering Arena Beta and Lucy rounds us out with a final word on Guacamelee 2. As a treat we’ve three beers each this week and, as with Donut County, we all drink the same beer first. From Quidi Vidi Brewery we have the Iceberg which is made with pure 20000 year old iceberg water. Aadil then has the […]

Lucy has two beers from Brew By Numbers the 10|12 Coffee Porter and the 21|16 Pale Ale. Ben has two Collabs. First from Pressure Drop and Boxcar, the 'Hazy Coalition' and then the 'Cycle City BCBF V2' from Left Handed Giant and Dry & Bitter.
Ben and Lucy are here to drink and discuss their love for the new release Minit, where you die every 60 seconds. There's chat of the co-op game A Way Out too and it's Lucy who's been playing it! We finish on the news of Spider-man getting a date and Ben gives his initial thought on The Red Strings Club, which Lucy has already played and talked about. It's, by chance, a London beer episode dominated by Brew By Numbers. Lucy has two from them with the 07|07 Witbier - orange and a 55|07 DIPA - grape. Ben starts with the Gipsy Hill 'Roamer' session IPA then joins the BBNo band wagon with the 42|02 DDH Pale Ale - Number 2.

We've all played Games, the funk has been kicked. Aadil has finally jumped into 'Mario Odyssey' which leads to a brief discussion on cheat codes. Lucy's been getting a puzzle kick in 'Q.U.B.E 2'. The game to help Ben kick the funk is the arcade space shooter 'Cycle 28'. Lucy's also played a point and click adventure 'Chuchel' and Aadil's actually spent most of the time he should be working playing 'Into The Breach', a tactics puzzle game, instead. Ben felt left out when everyone else had White IPAs so he's got the 'Drift' from Unity, then has the Finzel's Reach from Left Handed Giant. Lucy starts with a big on in the 'Mexicake' Imperial Stout by Tempest and a collaboration, the 'Doyen' IPA from Gypsy Hill and Fullers. Aadil starts light with the Oedipus 'Mannenliefde' saison then has something bigger in the 55|06 DIPA by Brew By Numbers.

This week features all three of us, huzzah! But we chat the darker side of gaming from Epic Games closing down Paragon after only 2 years to the arcade mode in Star Wars Battlefront 2 being tied to the mulitplayer for progression which has been designed around loot boxes and microtransactions. There are some positives though as we chat a little more Assassin's Creed Origins because Lucy has started it. We then move onto the other game she's been playing, Blossom Tales. To slightly redeem Battlefront 2 Ben really enjoyed the story mode. This week Lucy drinks a Partizan and Beer 52 collaboration Fennel Gose and the Northern Monk World Gone Sour IPA. Ben has a Double IPA from Fierce and Noble and the Big Poppa from Electric Bear. Aadil drinks a Brew By Numbers 11|26 Session IPA and finishes with the Northern Monk Patrons 2.03 City of Industry.

Today’s episode is part of a series of talks we recorded at the Shelton Brothers festival back in August in Atlanta — a phenomenal gathering of some of the best brewers in the world, as well as a few niche cider and wine makers, all holding their own in one of the most diverse and interesting product portfolios that’s ever been assembled. The folks from Shelton Brothers gave us a room, and free rein to curate talks with anyone we wanted, on any topics we wished. It’s a somewhat speedy series of interviews, much shorter than you’re used to on GBH, and that’s because we wanted to see if a series of topics might emerge — a pattern of sorts, that might give us an indication of what’s on people’s minds at this point in time, in this particular portfolio of producers. And sure enough, it worked. On a few of these episodes, other folks from GBH drop in from time to time as well, so you’ll also here from Blake Tyers and Kyle Kastranec
I’ve been writing for GBH for going on two and a half years now. Over that time you may or may not have noticed that I’ve gradually been trying to build a picture of the modern British beer scene. We’ve looked at the likes of Beavertown and Brew By Numbers in London, BrewDog up in Scotland, Cloudwater in Manchester, Magic Rock and Northern Monk in Yorkshire and most recently Lost & Grounded in Bristol. It’s Bristol that we find ourselves in today, or at least, that’s where today’s guest Bruce Gray, and his brewery Left Handed Giant, is based. Gray has worked in the beer industry for a number of years now, working in BrewDog’s bar division before heading to Bristol and setting up a distribution company. He also opened a specialist beer bar called Small Bar, which now has a second site in Cardiff, South Wales. From here he began “cuckoo brewing,” as Gray puts it, under the Left Handed Giant brand. Things snowballed for the fledgling brewery, as they are wont to do in a British market hungry for more young brands like his, and now they’re nestled into a permanent site, brewing 15 barrels at a time. Bristol seems to be the perfect incubator for the ambitious plans for his brewery. It’s perhaps because Gray has had the opportunity to work at all ends of the chain that he’s able to articulate his experiences within the beer industry so well. He does so regularly on his brewery's blog, where he’s earned a reputation for being honest and forthright. On this podcast he’s no different, giving in-depth opinions on issues such as the much-debated price of beer. He also gives his opinions on CAMRA as well as SIBA, the Society for Independent Brewers, which is the closest equivalent the UK has to America’s Brewers Association. We have a great conversation here that covers all of the above and more. Listen in.
That’s right, thirsty listeners! Pubcast Worldwide is now officially “Worldwide!” We travel to London, England for this episode for an impromptu afternoon at Brew By Numbers, a small-batch brewery right in the heart of London’s “Bermondsey Beer Mile,” where some of the city’s heaviest-hitters in England’s relatively new craft beer scene are located. Brewer Tobias “Toby” Gash joins the conversation to help us compare the respective beer scenes in the U.S. and his home in the U.K., where the craft beer phenomenon is roughly 5-years-young. But don’t let the age of the scene fool you…we tap into some delicious saisons and IPAs that could go up against North American beers any day of the week. Whether you’re looking for something light or something juicy, Brew By Numbers has you covered. They’re on-pace for producing more than 1 beer per week, and yes, they’re counting (obviously).
This week we’re joined by Johnny from Beer Frontiers to talk social media and beer while drinking beers that have recently created a buzz on social media for one reason or another. Since the day we opened, Brew By Numbers have been ever present in our fridges, and always pretty popular thanks to their great brews and sleek labels. However, several months ago they absolutely bowled over the UK brewing scene with their hazy, unfiltered, juicy pale ales and IPAs which were amongst the first in the "Yeast Coast" style. Suddenly they were catapulted to the forefront of everyone's mind with the incredible beers they were brewing. For our event, we were joined by founder Dave and events/marketing/beer man Chris. They took us through plenty of their beers, including these latest Pale Ales and IPAs. However, what's also brilliant is their nod to the brewing traditions of Belgium, with their Saisons still being one of the best modern interpretations of the style brewed in the UK currently. Finishing the night on their dangerously drinkable Tripel, hopped with Ella also showed that it just doesn't have to be a facemeltingly bitter and fruity pale beer to excite the palate. To listen to this Podcast on your iPhone or computer and subscribe to all new episodes, check out the We Broadcast Beer on the iTunes store. We also upload all our episodes to our SoundCloud account and Acast if iTunes isn't your thing! Produced by, and theme music by, Al Riley; hosted by James Hickson; massive thank you to Dave and Chris for coming down, and to all their brewers who perfectly blend modern and traditional brewing.
Hosted by our London Contributor, Matthew Curtis—For my first episode, I invited one of my best friends in the UK beer industry up to my apartment, here in North London, to record an interview. These days, Chris Hall works for a cool little brewery in South London called Brew By Numbers as their sales and media guy. I’ll be bringing the full story of Brew by Numbers to GBH soon, but before then I wanted to talk to Chris about how he worked his way into the beer industry His job encompasses everything from running the brewery’s Twitter account to writing artful blog posts about forthcoming beer releases as well as developing and hosting events. On top of this he’ll often be out visiting accounts and selling beer, and on really busy days you might even see him on the back of a forklift truck moving pallets around the warehouse. Such is the way of a small business. But Chris’ journey into the brewing industry was an unconventional one. Like me, he started out as a beer blogger, which is how we met and became friends. From there he became a professional beer writer, which eventually led to his position at Brew By Numbers. This is something we’re seeing more and more of in the beer industry, people starting out as enthusiasts who are eventually turning pro. And like Chris, they’re not just succeeding—they're thriving.
We’re back from our summer break with our biggest season ever and we’re celebrating with a double review episode! This week we feature CAMRA’s Champion Beer of Britain, Tiny Rebel’s ‘Cwtch’ and Brew By Numbers 14|02 ‘Wai-iti Tripel’. If that wasn’t enough we’ve also got an interview with Tom from Brew By Numbers. We review […]
ShEvo vs. The First World | A Skeptical Look at Western Culture
Full Show Script [simple creature] Evo: So... that was Europe. 7 countries visited in 129 days of travel. We could do the math to uncover how many miles we traveled, but there are some other figures we think you'll find more interesting. Ones that have to do with money, not distance. She: First, the cost of travel. Getting to and traipsing about Europe has to be expensive, right? Evo: Not really. When we added up the numbers, our big travel costs -- five separate trips by plane, and another five unrelated trips by train to different destinations -- the total came to $3600. Yes, for both of us. And yes, that included getting to Europe from America. No, we didn't cash in frequent flier miles or fly on a friends-and-family ticket. Sheila's just really good when it comes to travel planning. She: And then there's the cost of lodging. 129 nights on vacation should add up quickly, right? Evo: Again, not really. Not when you get rooms the way we do. Unlike train and air tickets, we get a lot of free lodging. 13 of our nights were completely comped, thanks to the conferences that booked us. 32 more nights were free, thanks friends old and new that let us couch surf with them, a night or two here and there, but sometimes weeks at a time. Thanks again, Gillian! But the bulk of our time -- 74 days -- was spent house sitting. Free lodging in exchange for watering the plants and feeding a few animals. Easy. She: That left ten days -- only ten days across four months -- where we had to pay for a hotel or Airbnb with our own funds. Total cost: just over $700. Evo: That's $70 a night for those 10 days, which isn't a bad price. But if you divide it across the entire 129, it's only five and a half bucks each day. That's a smoking deal, and I think we deserve a beer for our efforts. She: We took a break from the Ungagged conference in London to walk the Beer Head Mile, just south of London Bridge. It was only a little after 10 in the morning, and we both still had to function at the conference, so we only hit two breweries: The Kernel, which we knew and love, and then Brew By Numbers, new to us, but one we quickly grew to love. [BBN] She: Don't worry. I'm not going to let Evo make yet another craft beer nerd show. Instead, I want to draw your attention to the accent of Paul, the Brew By Numbers guy Evo's chatting with. He didn't sound like a typical Londoner to me, so I asked the obvious question: Evo: The question Paul gets a lot -- where are you from -- is becoming harder and harder to answer for a lot of people. Us, for example. We haven't had the right accent -- or simply didn't speak the correct language -- for the last five months. It's pretty clear we're not from here -- wherever here has been -- so we get asked the "where are you from" question a lot. She: It's a hard question for us to answer. Unlike a lot of long-term travelers, we literally have no home to return to. Do we say "Arizona", where we lived for the last 18 years? Do we say "Oklahoma", where we both grew up? Neither answer seems right, because neither of us really think we're "from" any one place. Evo: Which brings up one interesting thing we've noticed during this European leg of our global adventure: It really struck me in Milan, Italy. [cities look alike] Evo: Sheila's mis-remembering of how expensive beer was in Copenhagen aside, cities in Europe all kinda look alike. And small towns... tend to look a lot like other small towns from other European countries. Sure, there are iconic monuments and features -- the Eiffel Tower Paris or the Pyramids of Egypt -- but once you get past the big "attraction" or some unique geography, you'd be hard pressed to figure out what city -- or even country -- you were in by examining the local mundane architecture. She: Looking back at all that's happened over the last five months -- unexpected doctor visits, kidnapping, close encounters with acts of terror --...
