This week's hot take: Wild didn't just get lucky. Their £230M exit to Unilever was the result of laser-focused strategic thinking from day one. In this episode, James and I unpack what made Wild stand out - from choosing the right high-margin category, to treating influencer marketing like a performance channel, and blending creativity with ruthless commercialism. We explore the intentionality behind every decision, the smart playbook of building for an exit, and why performance and creativity aren't opposites - they're partners. Whether you're building a challenger brand or looking to level up your strategy, this one's packed with takeaways.Your HostsLottie Unwin founded Up World, Brand Hackers, and Up Talent with a simple goal: helping startups grow. She's learned a thing or two about building brands that people genuinely care about, and now she puts that knowledge to work supporting ambitious startups who want to make their mark. She loves nothing more than seeing brands find their confidence and voice - and she's not afraid to share the real ups and downs of her own journey along the way.James Hickson heads up Brand Hackers, where he helps make ambitious brands famous. After working with the likes of Innocent Drinks and BrewDog, he fell in love with the world of FMCG startups and never looked back. Most marketing teams don't talk enough about what's actually working. So in this episode, we're pulling back the curtain on one of our favourite campaigns - from idea to execution - and unpacking the real reasons it delivered.James and I take you inside the strategy, creative, and chaos of a campaign we ran for a challenger brand that was big on personality, small on budget, and laser-focused on growth. We cover how we landed on the core idea, what made it stick with consumers, and why we almost didn't run it. Spoiler: sometimes the “least polished” work performs the best.We also get into:How to sell bold ideas into a founder-led teamWhy a bit of friction can lead to better creativeThe underestimated power of "low-fi" productionThe role of gut feel vs data when deciding what to launchIf you're tired of vague marketing case studies and want a real, honest look at how great campaigns come to life (plus the messiness behind the scenes), this episode is for you.Your HostsLottie Unwin founded Up World, Brand Hackers, and Up Talent with a simple goal: helping startups grow. This week's hot take: Most brand strategies don't actually work. They sit in a deck, sound impressive in meetings, but never drive real growth.James and I have seen it happen over and over - brands with great products struggling because their strategy just isn't clear. So, we're breaking it all down. From the myths that keep brands stuck to the must-haves of a strategy that actually moves the needle, we're bringing the hot takes and hard truths. We get into why strategy isn't just a document, the power of knowing exactly who you're for (and who you're not), and how to craft brand positioning that truly resonates. Plus, the biggest mistake brands keep making—thinking branding is just a vibe rather than a system. Since the day we opened, Brew By Numbers have been ever present in our fridges, and always pretty popular thanks to their great brews and sleek labels. However, several months ago they absolutely bowled over the UK brewing scene with their hazy, unfiltered, juicy pale ales and IPAs which were amongst the first in the "Yeast Coast" style. Suddenly they were catapulted to the forefront of everyone's mind with the incredible beers they were brewing. For our event, we were joined by founder Dave and events/marketing/beer man Chris. They took us through plenty of their beers, including these latest Pale Ales and IPAs. However, what's also brilliant is their nod to the brewing traditions of Belgium, with their Saisons still being one of the best modern interpretations of the style brewed in the UK currently. Finishing the night on their dangerously drinkable Tripel, hopped with Ella also showed that it just doesn't have to be a facemeltingly bitter and fruity pale beer to excite the palate. The event featured a whistle-stop tour of London beer history, intertwined with tastings of Orbit’s beers and the not-so-occasional tangentially related story! We’ve split the event over two episodes because it lasted a bit longer than our usual events so be sure to keep an eye out for part two, which will be posted up soon! Produced by, and theme music by, Al Riley; hosted by James Hickson; big thanks to Adrian for coming up from Devon, and the Orbit guys for coming from the various places they live around London.

For the second episode of We Broadcast Beer, we invited Gregg Irwin down to our Clapham Junction store to chat about Weird Beard, and the beer scene in general. Weird Beard are one of our favourite breweries and have been a mainstay ever since we first opened. Gregg, one of the two co-founders, is a person who makes working in the beer scene as great a job as it is. Despite a pretty demanding job, he's always willing to make time for his customers, whether it's guys like us or the people who drink his beer. This, combined with a refreshing and honest perspective on what is happening in the beer world, meant he was someone we aways wanted to chat with. Download this episode to listen to our chat with Gregg, as well as info on upcoming events and more! A quick note that since we recorded this interview, Weird Beard have removed Decadence Stout and Spreadsheet Ninja from their core range. Produced by, and theme music by, Al Riley; hosted by James Hickson; big thanks to Gregg Irwin for taking time to come down to the store and chat to us!

Across the network, one of our favorite topics of discussion has got to be animation. From the kind that's paired best with over-sugared cereal, to the kind that makes your shell-shocked 'Nam vet great uncle blush. Well, in this episode we send up a series that's been around since that great uncle of yours was slashing through the jungles: Scooby-Doo. For nearly 50 years Scoob and the gang have been run-cycling their way through one spooky situation to another across TV, films, comics, and really, every medium known to humankind if we're being thorough. Join Cap, Doug, Jonathan from Wicked Anime, and Norbert Daniels Jr. of Saturday Morning Block Party as we dig through the gang's storied and sometimes sordid history. We explore the Hanna-Barbera history that led to the creation of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?, the cool and sometimes inexplicable crossovers, the new comic Scooby Apocalypse, and the series' crowning achievements such as the acclaimed Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated. Whether you're down with the Doo, or have witnessed one unmasking too many, there's strange nerdy stories herein guaranteed to thrill and chill. Rikes! Our very first We Broadcast Beer Episode features the incredible and hugely popular Beavertown Brewery. We invited them down for a Meet the Brewer event in our Balham store and were joined by Cosmo, one of their brewers, who has been with them for the last 2 years or so, and been part of their journey to becoming one of the leading lights in the UKs brewing industry. Beavertown have one of the most interesting stories in beer, and beers that have captured the imagination of both lovers of great beers and those who are only beginning their journey. We learn about their roots as a brewpub, their first foray into a dedicated brewing facility and what the future holds for them. So put some headphones on, sit back and enjoy! Produced by, and theme music by, Al Riley; hosted by James Hickson; big thanks to Cosmo and Charlotte from Beavertown for coming down to the shop and bringing along their amazing beer!
