A copy of Haydn's first string quartets was part of the cargo of the British merchant ship, the "Westmorland", which was captured by the French in 1779 and later purchased by King Carlos III of Spain. Inventories from the "Westmorland" tell us that the ship carried hundreds of musical scores like this, belonging to Grand Tourists and their tutors. It is evidence of the significant role that amateur music making played in the recreation and social activities of young men on the Grand Tour. Here we have the Kodaly Quartet performing String Quartet No. 1 in B flat major, Op. 1, "Presto" and "Minuet". The original score, printed in 1764, can be seen at the Yale Center for British Art through January 13, 2013.
In 1779, the "Westmorland" - a British ship laden with works of art acquired by young travelers on the Grand Tour - was captured by two French warships. It was declared a prize of war, and the works of art and books were sold to Carlos III of Spain. On board was a copy of Moliere's plays, first printed in 1762, which belonged to Sir John Henderson. "Les Femmes Savantes" (The Learned Ladies) was one of Moliere's most popular comedies. Here, two actors from the Yale School of Drama perform Act I, Scene I between two sisters, Henriette and Armande. You can see the original in the exhibition through January 13, 2013.
