Imagine this - you're standing on a mountain ridge almost four miles above sea level. The wind is howling, and screaming, and you're barely able to stay standing. The world around you is white in every direction. You're cold and you know that there will be no rescue tonight. You're experiencing a fierce storm on Denali. A place that can be deadly when the weather turns . Luckily you're only imagining this scenario but in the summer of 1967, twelve men walked straight into one of the worst storms the mountain had seen in decades. Only five returned.Support us on Patreon for as little as $1 a month, with benefits starting at the $3 tier!Follow us on Instagram at offthetrailspodcastFollow us on Facebook at Off the Trails PodcastIf you have your own outdoor misadventure (or adventure) story that you'd like us to include in a listener episode, send it to us at offthetrailspodcast@gmail.com Please take a moment to rate and review our show, and a big thanks if you already have!**We do our own research and try our best to cross-reference reliable sources to present the most accurate information we can. What assumptions are holding you back from creating a more accessible show? If you knew more about your listener's accessibility needs, how would that change your show? Podcasting borrows so much of its policy and practice from more traditional forms of media, and while that's given us a great place to start, it's also slowed down innovation in this unique medium. Meg Wilcox is a journalist and professor at Mount Royal University. Her research focuses on where podcasting could improve in terms of accessibility and ethics. In this episode, she shares how her experience producing an audio memoir for a woman with vision impairment prompted her to reconsider how we approach everything from recording and publishing to promoting our shows. You'll learn about the ethics of copyright ownership, the slow adoption of accessibility tools, and the ongoing barriers that, if dismantled, would give anyone with a podcasting dream the tools to make it come true. Reframe how you think about your show's accessibility and availability: The power of accessibility upgrades to make podcasting better for everyone; The importance of understanding your audience and what they need; What's still missing in the wider world of media accessibility; Our flawed expectations around what's "professional" in audio. Based in Portland, Skylab integrates architecture, interiors, and master planning into one seamless approach. Their work shows that design is more than solving problems. It is storytelling and placemaking. Susan and Robin share how curiosity and a deep understanding of people and place guide every project. The result is memorable environments that connect with both users and communities.Susan Barnes discusses her path into architecture and what motivates her design leadership. For Susan, a refined concept emerges only when everyone feels valued and heard.Robin Wilcox brings the conversation into the world of resort, hospitality, and large-scale commercial projects. He has guided the design of destinations like the Deer Valley Masterplan, the A-Frame Club in Colorado, and new work at Telluride Ski and Golf.
