This event is going to be a coming home to yourself, AND a lot of fun. xoJill We are getting so close to the upcoming BE YOU event celebrating five years and 300 episodes of the podcast, and this week, Jill is providing listeners with some important details - both reminders and updates - about the event. She stresses that while this episode is primarily for listeners who are definitely going to the event, everyone else is invited to listen as well in case you're on the fence about whether or not you want to go and/or just want an idea of the energy and atmosphere that will be experienced at the event. Jill encourages listeners to find ways to seek out the same sense of authenticity, connection, and support that will be present at the event, whether it be through creating your own gatherings or your own social circles, and she stresses that the event is about dropping masks, letting go of competition and comparison, and simply being yourself! For those who are attending the event, listen in as Jill provides some helpful details, from the event schedule to the dress code (which is essentially no dress code at all). She promises attendees that the event is designed to make them feel safe, seen, and held, without any pressure for vulnerability or deep work beyond what they are comfortable with. She also shares her vision for the event, a place where women can simply be themselves without feeling a need to perform or impress. Ultimately, Jill invites listeners to fully embrace the opportunity, whether attending the event or finding ways to create a similar experience in your own lives, and she passionately encourages an attitude of openness, surrender, and trust in the process as she promises that the event will be a transformative and literally unique experience! Jill spends some time this week reflecting on some of the lessons that she has been learning as she plans her upcoming event celebrating 300 episodes of the podcast! She gets into the personal growth that she has experienced via planning this event, acknowledging her tendency to take on too much responsibility and do everything herself, even though this often leads to burnout and resentment. However, after realizing that she was slipping back into this pattern as she planned the event, Jill had an epiphany - the true lesson was not about her own limitations but about fully surrendering and trusting that the universe will provide what is needed, so rather than trying to force herself to sell every single ticket, Jill has decided to let go and allow the seats to fill organically. She declares that there will be 200 women in that room, and she is going to "dance, breathe, sound bathe" her way to that outcome, rather than grinding and hustling. Jill also shares that this event is not just for the attendees but is also a gift to herself, acknowledging that she has often put others' needs before her own. She invites listeners who may also struggle with holding too much responsibility to reflect on their own patterns, and consider how they can let go and allow the universe to support them! Enjoy this vulnerable and insightful reflection from Jill this week as we get closer and closer to the big event! Show Notes: [1:29] - Jill encourages even those not attending the upcoming event to seek out authentic community. [4:49] - Jill invites participants to join a WhatsApp group for connection and friendship building prior to the event. [6:46] - Jill advises women to quiet their minds, set intentions, and tune in to the energy of the event. [11:21] - The event will feel safe, genuine, and deeply affirming without forced anyone to be vulnerable. [13:28] - Jill promises an authentic four-hour experience that's grounded in sincerity and connection. [16:38] - Listeners are reminded that this is the one and only time in history that this exact event and experience will happen. [22:04] - Jill has felt divinely guided to create the event, referring to it as 'annointed.” [25:47] Jill shares some logistics such as arrival time, snacks, parking, and tips for maximizing comfort. [28:10] - It's reiterated there is no dress code; Jill wants attendees to be comfortable! [30:50] - Be YOU will be one of only 2% of podcasts to make it to 300 episodes! This Day in Legal History: Spiro Agnew ResignsOn October 10, 1973, Vice President Spiro T. Agnew resigned from office after pleading nolo contendere (no contest) to a charge of federal income tax evasion. This marked the first time in U.S. history that a sitting vice president resigned due to criminal charges. Agnew, who had been under investigation for bribery, extortion, and tax fraud from his time as Baltimore County Executive and Governor of Maryland, struck a deal with federal prosecutors to avoid jail time.Agnew's resignation came amid the broader constitutional crisis surrounding the Nixon administration, which was already under intense scrutiny due to the unfolding Watergate scandal. While Agnew denied the bribery allegations, he admitted he failed to report $29,500 in income received in 1967. As part of the plea agreement, he was fined $10,000 and placed on three years' probation, but avoided prison. His departure triggered the use of the 25th Amendment, specifically Section 2, which allows the president to nominate a new vice president when a vacancy occurs. President Nixon nominated Gerald R. Ford, then House Minority Leader, who was confirmed by both chambers of Congress. Less than a year later, Nixon himself would resign, and Ford would ascend to the presidency—making him the only U.S. president never elected to the office of president or vice president.New York Attorney General Letitia James was indicted on October 9, 2025, for allegedly providing false information on a mortgage application. A federal grand jury in Virginia charged her with bank fraud and making a false statement to a lending institution, accusing her of falsely claiming she would use a property in Norfolk, Virginia, as a secondary residence. The indictment alleges that by misrepresenting her intent, James secured a lower interest rate, saving around $19,000. She denies wrongdoing and called the charges a politically motivated attack by the Trump administration, which she has clashed with repeatedly. The case follows a recent indictment of former FBI Director James Comey and ongoing investigations into other Trump critics, including Senator Adam Schiff and Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook. Critics, including James' attorney Abbe Lowell and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, claim Trump is using the Justice Department for political retaliation. The case was brought by U.S. Attorney Lindsey Halligan, a recent Trump appointee, reportedly without involvement from career prosecutors. James is expected to appear in court on October 24.The legal battle comes amid ongoing litigation between James and Trump, most notably a civil fraud case that initially led to a $454 million penalty against Trump, later overturned on appeal. James' team plans to fight the charges vigorously, suggesting her misstatements were not intentional.Letitia James, NY attorney general and Trump foe, indicted for mortgage fraud | ReutersA federal judge in Chicago has temporarily blocked President Donald Trump's attempt to deploy National Guard troops to Illinois, citing concerns that the move could escalate tensions rather than ease them. U.S. District Judge April Perry questioned the federal government's justification for sending troops to manage what it described as unrest around an ICE facility in Broadview, Illinois. The state had sued the Trump administration, arguing the deployment was unnecessary and politically motivated. Perry noted that federal officers' own actions had sparked the protests and warned that additional troops would “add fuel to the fire.” Her injunction will remain in place until at least October 23.This ruling follows a similar block in Portland, Oregon, though a federal appeals court in San Francisco now seems poised to overturn that decision, possibly clearing the way for future deployments. The Trump administration has defended the use of troops, claiming it's necessary to protect federal property, while Democratic leaders in affected states accuse the president of misrepresenting peaceful protests as violent uprisings.Governor JB Pritzker called the court's ruling a win for the rule of law, arguing there's no rebellion requiring a military response in Illinois. The White House, meanwhile, pledged to appeal the decision, with Trump reiterating plans to expand troop deployments to other cities, including Chicago and Memphis. Critics argue this strategy stretches the limits of presidential authority and raises legal concerns over the military's role in domestic law enforcement.US judge blocks Trump's deployment of National Guard in Illinois | ReutersThe U.S. Senate confirmed Jennifer Mascott, a conservative legal scholar and Trump ally, to the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in a 50-47 vote, further shifting the court to the right. Her confirmation drew criticism from Democrats, particularly from Delaware senators, who objected to her lack of ties to the state traditionally associated with the vacant seat. Her only known Delaware connection is a beach house, prompting concerns about broken precedent and political loyalty.Mascott, who has clerked for Justices Clarence Thomas and Brett Kavanaugh, was on leave from her faculty position at Catholic University while working in the White House Counsel's Office. Senate Republicans praised her conservative legal background and past testimony before the Judiciary Committee. In contrast, Democrats criticized her nomination as partisan, with Senator Chuck Schumer labeling her a “sycophant” to Trump. This appointment, along with the recent confirmation of Emil Bove—a former Trump DOJ official and personal attorney—gives Republican appointees a majority on the 3rd Circuit, which hears appeals from Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.Democrats also voiced frustration over the elimination of the “blue slip” tradition, which once allowed home-state senators to block appellate nominees. Republicans ended that practice during Trump's first term, enabling confirmations like Mascott's over local opposition. On the same day, the Senate Judiciary Committee advanced another Trump nominee, Rebecca Taibleson, despite objections from her home-state senator.US Senate confirms Trump nominee Mascott to federal appeals court | ReutersA Republican-controlled Senate committee approved two of President Donald Trump's nominees to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) but delayed action on a third, leaving the agency without the quorum needed to issue decisions. The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee voted 12-11 to advance James Murphy, a retired NLRB lawyer, to the board and Crystal Carey, a labor attorney, as general counsel. However, a planned vote on Scott Mayer, Boeing's chief labor counsel, was pulled after he clashed with Senator Josh Hawley during his confirmation hearing. The NLRB has been unable to function fully since Trump's firing of Democratic board member Gwynne Wilcox in January and the expiration of another Republican member's term. Wilcox is challenging her dismissal in court, and the Supreme Court has allowed her removal to stand pending resolution. Without at least three board members, the NLRB cannot issue rulings, stalling hundreds of cases — including many involving union elections.Trump's nominees would give Republicans control of the board for the first time since 2021. Democrats expressed concern over the independence of the nominees, noting the precedent of Wilcox's dismissal and questioning whether the new appointees could remain neutral. Both Murphy and Mayer insisted they would apply the law impartially, regardless of political pressure.Mayer faced particular scrutiny over a current strike involving Boeing workers in Missouri. Hawley criticized Boeing's executive compensation amid labor disputes, while Mayer declined to comment on the situation, citing his pending nomination. The HELP Committee also approved other Trump nominees for roles within the Department of Labor.US Senate panel approves two Trump NLRB nominees, tables a third | ReutersThis week's closing theme is by Giuseppe Verdi. This week's closing theme features a composer whose name is nearly synonymous with Italian opera — Giuseppe Verdi, born on or around October 10, 1813, in the small village of Le Roncole, then part of the Napoleonic French Empire. Best known for grand operas like La Traviata, Aida, and Rigoletto, Verdi's music defined the emotional and political voice of 19th-century Italy. Though his legacy rests almost entirely on the opera stage, Verdi briefly stepped into the world of chamber music with a single, striking contribution: his String Quartet in E minor, composed in 1873.He wrote it during a production delay of Aida in Naples, saying modestly it was “just a trifle” — but the work is anything but. The first movement, Allegro vivace, opens with an energetic, tightly woven interplay among the instruments, showcasing Verdi's grasp of counterpoint and formal structure, likely influenced by his admiration for German composers like Beethoven. There's a dramatic drive that feels operatic, yet the themes unfold with the clarity and discipline of a seasoned instrumentalist. It's the only surviving chamber piece Verdi completed, and it stands as a fascinating outlier in his body of work — more intimate, abstract, and inward-looking than his vocal dramas. The movement balances lyrical passages with bursts of rhythmic vitality, hinting that even without voices, Verdi could make instruments sing. As we mark the week of his birth, this selection offers a rare glimpse into the quieter, more introspective corners of a composer usually associated with sweeping arias and rousing choruses. This event is going to be a coming home to yourself, AND a lot of fun. xoJill Join Jill this week as she discusses the upcoming Be YOU event called "Be You Live" which is celebrating its five-year anniversary and 300th episode! Jill acknowledges that this event may not be for everyone, as our nervous systems can sometimes try to prevent us from doing things that will expand and challenge us, but she encourages listeners to truly listen to their intuition to determine if this event is right for them in spite of any doubts or excuses their mind may come up with. Jill also spends time this episode discussing her perspective on true friendship, describing the type of deep, authentic friendships that she has built upon – ones in which there is radical honesty, vulnerability, and a willingness to challenge each other to grow – and she contrasts this with more surface-level friendships that avoid difficult conversations. Jill shares her own experience of having to have a "clearing conversation" with someone she cares about but ultimately having realized that they were not meant to be close friends. She highlights the importance of shedding relationships that no longer serve us but doing so with self-compassion rather than judgment. Jill ultimately encourages listeners to reflect on the quality of your own friendships and your relationships with yourselves, suggesting journaling, self-reflection, and allowing yourselves to fully feel emotions as ways to pave the way for the type of meaningful connections she talks about in this episode, believing that when we can be that kind of friend to ourselves, we will attract those kinds of friendships with others! Show Notes: [01:31] - Jill is urging listeners to overcome fear that's preventing growth and attend the upcoming Be YOU event! [04:35] - She challenges the idea that self-sacrifice is noble and insists that true belonging comes from being yourself. [07:20] - Real friendships mirror growth and honesty and first require self-acceptance. [10:04] - Jill teaches compassion toward yourself, and she notes how friendships reflect inner healing and might naturally dissolve. [13:12] - Jill accepts that not all connections align, affirming her high standards. [15:43] - Jill values friendships with honesty and sincere feedback. [18:25] - True friendships, Jill insists, honor authenticity and the highest self, not old wounds from childhood trauma. Duke Energy's Andy Browning joins Dave and Steve to unpack how a modern utility balances today's demand spikes—especially from data centers—with tomorrow's low-carbon grid. Andy traces his path from Babcock & Wilcox field engineer to Duke's GM of Engineering & Construction Services, explains why Duke runs an “all-of-the-above” strategy (gas as a bridge, batteries for flexibility, solar growth, hydro upgrades), and makes the case that nuclear—both large units and SMRs—will anchor long-term reliability. The trio dig into dam stabilization, battery use cases (peak shaving and PV smoothing), project timelines and costs, community engagement, and how policy and tariffs shape what actually gets built. They close with a look at fusion research and a rapid-fire on bourbon, woodworking, and what fuels resilience.Key TakeawaysCareer & scope: Andy oversees engineering, construction, commissioning, quality, safety, and project controls for Duke's big builds.Cultural lesson: International work taught him to respect local pace and processes—context changes what “top priority” means.Hydro safety: Post-FERC reviews are driving earthen-dam rebuilds (compaction, drainage layers) to prevent liquefaction under seismic events.Resource mix: Duke is pursuing gas, nuclear, solar, hydro, and batteries; offshore wind unlikely near-term given costs and policy headwinds.Batteries' role: Great for peak shaving and smoothing solar variability; typical systems are 2–4-hour duration (e.g., 10 MW / 40 MWh).Scale & siting: Solar needs ~6–10 acres per MW and only delivers during daylight; data centers requesting 400–1,000 MW reshape planning.Timelines & costs (rule of thumb): Batteries ~12–15 months after development; solar similar; combined-cycle gas ~4 years; nuclear 10+ years.Cost reality: A 75-MW solar site ≈ $100–150M; a 1,000-MW gas plant ≈ ~$2B; nuclear is multiples beyond—but with long lifespans.Nuclear outlook: Expect SMRs + large reactors; challenges include qualified supply chains, workforce, and public education; existing units targeting 80-year life via extensions.Data-center surge: Demand is soaring; innovative financing/ownership models (e.g., behind-the-meter, cost-sharing) may protect retail customers.

From Wyoming cowboy to Marine, from Vietnam veteran to Hollywood star—Larry Wilcox has lived a dozen lives in one. Best known as Officer Jon Baker on CHiPs, Wilcox joins Steve Kmetko for a revealing conversation about his childhood, his military service, the pop culture explosion of CHiPs, and what really went on behind the scenes with co-star Erik Estrada. In this wide-ranging interview, Wilcox reflects on the culture shock of leaving small-town Wyoming for Beverly Hills, the highs and lows of Hollywood stardom, and the reality of keeping a hit show alive in the late '70s and early '80s. He opens up about performing stunts, surviving near-death moments, navigating on-set tension, and even being forced off the show at the height of its success. Beyond CHiPs, Wilcox shares candid stories about his service in Vietnam, losing his sister to tragedy, living with PTSD, and why he ultimately found peace in business, aviation, and new creative ventures. In this episode: Growing up in Wyoming and chasing Hollywood dreams Becoming a Marine, Vietnam memories, and life-changing loss How he landed CHiPs—and why it was the hardest role of his career Behind-the-scenes with Erik Estrada: chemistry, conflict, and reconciliation Hair-raising stunt stories and near-death experiences The pop culture phenomenon of CHiPs—and what happened when he left Reflections on fame, humility, and building a life after television It's more than just a nostalgic trip down TV memory lane—it's the unflinching life story of a Marine turned pop culture icon who's still here to tell it all. Sept. 23, 2025, marks the 30th anniversary of the publishing of “The Family: A Proclamation to the World” from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Members of the Church also refer to this proclamation as the family proclamation. For three decades, the principles and doctrine outlined in this document have helped members of the Church, as well as others, to strengthen and understand the importance of family in God’s eternal plan. In this episode of the Church News podcast, W. Bradford Wilcox, a sociology professor at the University of Virginia and director of the National Marriage Project, joins Church News editor Ryan Jensen to discuss the benefits of a “marriage mindset.” The Church News Podcast is a weekly podcast that invites listeners to make a journey of connection with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints across the globe. Hosts Jon Ryan Jensen, editor of the Church News, and Church News reporter Mary Richards share unique views of the stories, events, and people who form this international faith. With each episode, listeners are asked to embark on a journey to learn from one another and ponder, “What do I know now?” because of the experience. Produced by KellieAnn Halvorsen.
OA1185 - The rule of law has never been put more to the test in this country, and we do our best to keep up with at least a few of the most important decent developments. We begin with a brief review of the current status of wrongfully-deported Salvadoran asylum seeker Kilmar Abrego Garcia. Why is the Trump administration desperately trying to re-deport this Central American man whom they already fully admit was deported to hell by mistake to… Uganda? Matt explains. Then: Did a federal judge really just shutter Florida's “Alligator Alcatraz”? We consider the history of this surprisingly significant swampland and why an environmental challenge to its existence was so much easier to win than one based in due process, while also celebrating a major win for native rights. Another major presidential first this week: for the first time in US history, the President has claimed the authority to fire a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. Could this one decision really have global economic consequences? How much does it matter that Trump has done literally the one thing that the Supreme Court has ever told him *not* to do? We review some basics to try to understand the full magnitude of what this all means for our current moment before moving on to today's footnote: an outstanding decision from a Virginia federal judge which should stand as a model for how the judiciary can stand up to American fascism. Kilmar Abrego Garcia's Motion to Dismiss Based on Vindictive and Selective Prosecution Abrego Garcia habeas docket SCOTUS shadow docket order in Trump v. Wilcox (5/22/2025) Judge Williams's order closing “Alligator Alcatraz” (8/21/2025) Order granting motion to dismiss in U.S. v. Russell (8/26/2025) Check out the OA Linktree for all the places to go and things to do!
