PREVIEW — Gordon G. Chang — American Enterprise in China: Frustration and the Shift to Supply Webs. John Batchelor and Chang discuss American enterprises encountering significant market opportunities in China but experiencing persistent disappointment, frustration, and strategic retreat due to China's "pirate stance" on intellectual property protection. American businesses, though historically overly optimistic regarding trade expansion trends, are systematically developing alternative sourcing arrangements—constructing "supply webs" rather than centralized supply chains—as they confront the serious, escalating trade friction and intellectual property theft. 1918 PEKING UNIVERSITY
The Spirit World is Already Here by Autumn Dickson We have the opportunity to read two revelations this week. Despite the different times in which they were given, the two revelations were placed together in the Doctrine and Covenants, and they hold more power in that manner. The first recorded vision was received by Joseph Smith, and the second recorded vision was given to Joseph F. Smith. I want to share a couple of verses from the section given to Joseph F. Smith regarding the spirit world. Doctrine and Covenants 138:22-24 22 Where these (the wicked, unrepentant, rebellious) were, darkness reigned, but among the righteous there was peace; 23 And the saints rejoiced in their redemption, and bowed the knee and acknowledged the Son of God as their Redeemer and Deliverer from death and the chains of hell. 24 Their countenances shone, and the radiance from the presence of the Lord rested upon them, and they sang praises unto his holy name. These verses talk about the spirit world on the other side of the veil. It gives us a glimpse into what life holds depending on how you chose to live your life and how those choices affected who you became. Taking the time to imagine what it will be like is powerful, especially when you've lost someone you love. But rather than read it from the perspective of the spirit world, I want you to read it again as if it's speaking about where we dwell now. Despite its insight into the spirit world, it can also be a very accurate description of the mortal life we're living in. In the fallen mortality where we dwell, there are people who want nothing to do with the Savior and His gospel. There are many who want the exact opposite of what He stands for and believe the Savior to be oppressive. In those specific places and hearts, darkness reigns. God doesn't necessarily send darkness or make their world terrible; it's what they've invited into their lives. Important tangent here. This gets slightly tricky because I don't believe all non-Christians are dark people. Rather, I believe that at any given moment, we are inviting or shunning darkness. There are a lot of people who accept so much of Christ's gospel even if they do not yet accept Him personally. They have invited portions of light into their lives by living their lives in a Christlike manner. So not immediately accepting Christ doesn't mean you live in utter darkness and allow it to reign over you. I do believe they're missing out on light, but that doesn't mean I assume they are voluntarily inviting darkness to rule their lives. Let's keep going on with reading the description of the spirit world and mortality.. So there are people who don't want Christ and voluntarily shun Him. They want the darkness. They like it. They don't see any reason to change. In other places, sometimes very nearby, there are Saints who are living in the same space but find themselves rejoicing in their redemption. They love the Savior and trust Him. They acknowledge Him and worship Him. Then, of course, there is a whole spectrum between these groups of people. Even on that spectrum, we're finding ourselves moving back and forth depending on what we're inviting and focusing on. Despite the fact that we can find people all along that spectrum, I want to bring your attention to one other grouping: there are Saints who are trying to live the gospel but still have not found the reason to rejoice. They don't always feel hope or peace. They don't feel the radiance of the Lord shining down on them. We believe in Christ and the gospel, but have we found salvation? We read this in Alma. Alma 34:31 Yea, I would that ye would come forth and harden not your hearts any longer; for behold, now is the time and the day of your salvation; and therefore, if ye will repent and harden not your hearts, immediately shall the great plan of redemption be brought about unto you. Immediately. Not just in the spirit world. Immediately. If you truly find Christ, the plan of redemption is brought immediately. Today can be the day of your salvation if you repent and don't harden your heart. Immediately, you can find yourself in the same state as those dwelling in spirit paradise. You can rejoice in the Redeemer who freed you from hell and any aspects of it that you may still be clinging to. The radiance of the presence of the Lord can shine upon you. If you do not yet feel these aspects of salvation, I have a small warning for you. Dying and going to the other side does not immediately bring about those feelings. Dying has very little to do with it. Experiencing spiritual paradise stems from your relationship with Christ. Dying happens somewhere along the way for good reason, but experiencing salvation doesn't necessarily wait for death. It's just waiting for you. When was the last time you let yourself rejoice in Christ? When was the last time you chose to trust Him so deeply that it swallowed up your pain and carried it for a while? When was the last time you chose gratitude for His promises even if you couldn't choose gratitude for what was directly going on in your life? Spiritual paradise is a choice, not just a destination on the other side. What happens there is just a continuation of what happens here. You don't change on the other side unless you go through the same process of changing that you have to experience on this side. I love the verse from Alma 34 because it doesn't say, “Follow the Law of Moses perfectly and then you will experience salvation immediately.” It says, “Repent and soften your heart and then you will experience salvation immediately.” Change! Soften! Trust! He loves you and is mighty to save. When you find it within yourself to say, “I'm going to try putting weight on these promises,” you'll find solid ground. Even if everything comes to disaster in mortality, there is solid ground in Christ. I testify that trusting Christ and taking Him at His word was one of the most joyful decisions I ever made. Though I obviously fluctuate in that trust as I move about life, continually spending time with Him every day has made that trust more consistent. Spending time with Him every day has forced me to remember His promises. As I've moved about my daily life and run into new challenges and all of the pitfalls of mortality, I have found rejoicing alongside my pain. It didn't come from living the gospel more perfectly; it came from trusting Him more perfectly. I testify that spirit paradise or allowing darkness to reign are choices we make on a daily basis; they're not just destinations in the spirit world. I testify that the day of your salvation, the day you find rejoicing in Christ, can be today, and you don't even have to die in order to find it. You just have to trust. 5/8 Princelings, Purges, and the Politics of Red Nostalgia — Tanya Branigan — Princelings Bo Xilai and Xi Jinping, both children of senior Communist leadership, were themselves CR victims, experiencing persecution and hardship. Bo Xilai, known for his conspicuous personal style, strategically exploited CR nostalgia by promoting "red songs" celebrating the revolutionary era. Xi Jinping, though more rhetorically restrained, similarly adopted ideological and sentimental appeals to revolutionary memory. This return to Maoist mythology attracts grassroots constituencies seeking transcendent meaning, ideological purity, and moral certainty amid contemporary economic disruption and pervasive institutional corruption. 1967
Even in this fallen, mysterious, often painful world, by God's design and at God's hand, there is serious joy for us to experience throughout all life. Experiencing that joy looks a bit different when we're old than when we're young, but it's there for us all, all along. So rejoice in whatever good things God gives us, throughout whatever life God gives us.

Go Woke, Go Broke: The Financial Backlash and Corporate Retreat — Charles Gasparino — Gasparino reports that woke capitalism is experiencing significant financial retrenchment as corporations suffer bottom-line consequences. BlackRock experienced approximately $14 billion in asset withdrawals, and financial institutions including Goldman Sachs are dismantling diversity programs. CEOs are systematically abandoning progressive political commitments as financial performance deteriorates, recognizing that woke agendas alienate the broader American consumer base. Home Depot founder Bernie Marcus contends that the ideological struggle continues and characterizes most CEOs who embraced wokeness as "cowards" reflexively following prevailing political sentiment. 1943

This week on Fat Science, Dr. Emily Cooper, Mark Wright, and Andrea Taylor field your most urgent metabolic health questions—exploring care advocacy, novel drug use, lab results, and how to filter fact from fiction in the TikTok age. Dr. Cooper offers clinical clarity, real-world perspective, and actionable hope—with an emphasis on what truly matters for your long-term health and energy.Hear from listeners experiencing real breakthroughs (and challenges) with GLP-1s, get tips for navigating confusing cholesterol results, and learn why self-advocacy and good science matter more than credentials or hype. This is not a quick-fix episode; it's real metabolic medicine, mythbusting, and grounded encouragement for your health journey.Key Questions AnsweredWhat labs and scores best assess your true metabolic risk—and how do you make sense of fasting glucose, glucose-insulin ratio (GIR), and FIB-4?How can you find a medical provider who'll actually give you the time and attention metabolic care requires? Why do GLP-1s benefit more than weight loss alone? Listeners report help with sleep apnea, inflammation, and food noise—what does the science say?How should you reintroduce carbs after restriction, and what's the safest way to monitor (beyond A1C)?What's up with rising cholesterol on Zepbound, and when do you worry?Does serotonin syndrome relate to GLP-1s? (Short answer: No—Dr. Cooper explains why.)What are the dangers of “GLP-1 microdosing” as pushed by social media, and what happens when influencers overstep good science?Key TakeawaysCare that cares: The best doctor isn't always the most credentialed—find someone, MD, NP, or PA, who takes your questions seriously and goes deeper than the surface. Labs that matter: Fasting glucose, insulin, GIR, HbA1c, plus advanced lipid testing (CardioIQ, NMR) are critical for uncovering hidden risk—not just chasing numbers. GLP-1s act broadly: Listeners see gains in sleep, inflammation, and appetite regulation. These benefits are real, not just anecdotal, and Dr. Cooper shares the clinical rationale. Smart fueling, even on GLP-1s: If you lack hunger cues, “mechanical eating” prevents under-fueling and cellular stress—especially important for maintaining muscle and metabolism. Rethinking “microdosing”: TikTok trends are not medical advice—microdosing with black-market GLP-1s is unproven, poorly regulated, and potentially unsafe. Rely on trusted, legal medication sources only. Dr. Cooper's Actionable TipsRequest a full panel for metabolic health: ask your provider about fasting insulin, GIR, HbA1c, lipids, and FIB-4—even if you haven't been flagged as “at risk”. For those on GLP-1s: Don't skip meals; create a schedule with protein and fiber to avoid muscle loss and ensure micronutrient intake. Experiencing cholesterol shifts on medication? Ask for a breakdown (HDL, LDL, particle size) and consider advanced panels (CardioIQ, NMR) to better understand your risk. If reintroducing carbs after restriction, pair them with protein or fat and test glucose/insulin at intervals post-meal to personalize your plan. Avoid unregulated “microdosing” and buy only from reputable, FDA-approved outlets—protect your long-term health over quick fixes. What happens when you live with a severe eating disorder in a larger body yet the medical system refuses to see it? In this powerful conversation, Sharon Maxwell (she/they) shares her story of surviving anorexia in a fat body, advocating for herself inside medical systems that consistently denied her care, and reclaiming joy, autonomy, and embodiment after years of harm. Sharon is an educator, speaker, and fat activist who dedicates her work to dismantling anti fat bias and eradicating weight stigma in healthcare and society. Their story and activism have been featured in the New York Times Magazine, The Tamron Hall Show, The Wall Street Journal, NPR, 60 Minutes, and more. Together, we explore the realities of receiving medical care while fat, why compassionate providers save lives, how weight stigma shaped Sharon's early life and nearly cost her her life, and why reclaiming joy becomes an act of resistance. This episode holds so much wisdom, solidarity, and truth telling for anyone in eating disorder recovery, anyone harmed by medical weight stigma, and anyone committed to building a safer world for people in larger bodies. What We Cover in This Episode Sharon's Early Story and Reclaiming Joy Sharon shares a surprising fun fact about being a lifelong pianist and how taking jazz lessons helped them reclaim creativity after growing up in a restrictive religious cult that controlled every aspect of music, expression, and embodied joy. They describe how jazz has become part of their healing and identity reconstruction. Growing Up Fat, Undiagnosed, and Unseen Sharon lived in a fat body their entire life and struggled with anorexia for nineteen years. They went undiagnosed because medical providers only saw their body size. When Sharon arrived with obvious symptoms of an eating disorder, providers dismissed the symptoms and blamed their body. They describe how weight stigma prevented treatment and reinforced eating disorder patterns. The Doctor Who Changed Everything Sharon describes the first doctor who recognized the eating disorder and offered real compassion. That moment shifted the trajectory of their life. We discuss how rare this experience is and why truly compassionate medical care can be lifesaving for people living in larger bodies. Medical Trauma and the Cost of Weight Stigma Sharon shares painful stories about: Being denied necessary medical procedures because of body size. Experiencing trauma at gynecological appointments. Nearly dying from untreated tonsillitis because providers assumed weight was the cause rather than treating the actual condition. The emotional and financial toll of weight stigma across childhood and adulthood. We discuss how the healthcare system misattributes the financial cost of weight stigma to the O-word and how this distorts public health narratives and patient care. Eating Disorders in Larger Bodies Sharon explains how anti fat bias prevents providers from seeing eating disorders in fat patients. They highlight how common anorexia is in larger bodies and how life threatening it becomes when medical systems refuse to diagnose or treat it. How Anti Fat Bias Harms Everyone Sharon and I talk about how dismantling anti fat bias supports every person in eating disorder recovery. Recovery requires divesting from anti fat bias, reconnecting with the body, and understanding how these biases shape thoughts and behaviors across all sizes. Intersectionality and Medical Harm We explore how harms escalate for people with multiple marginalized identities, including Black patients, Indigenous patients, trans patients, and fat patients who also face racism, transphobia, or medical gatekeeping. Advocacy, Boundaries, and Medical Self Protection Sharon shares concrete strategies for preparing for medical appointments, including: Bringing notes to stay grounded when hyperarousal hits. Recording appointments for recall and safety. Bringing a support person. Taking intentional rest time afterward. Establishing boundaries and walking out when providers violate consent. We discuss how exhausting it is to prepare for appointments that should be safe and how necessary these strategies become for survival. Why Sharon Became a Fat Activist After nearly dying because of weight stigma, Sharon left the classroom to educate clinicians, providers, and communities about anti fat bias. They now work with medical systems and general audiences to deconstruct bias, build safer care practices, and illuminate the threads of anti fat culture that harm everyone. Imagining an Ideal World Sharon answers the signature Dr. Marianne Land question. Their ideal world includes accessible spaces for play, joy, rest, and creativity for all bodies. It includes medical care rooted in compassion, humanity, and dignity, and it includes ice cream for everyone with options for all bodies and needs. Who This Episode Is For This episode supports: People in fat bodies who have experienced medical trauma. Listeners who lived with eating disorders in larger bodies without diagnosis or care. Providers wanting to unlearn weight stigma and offer safer treatment. Clinicians seeking to understand the intersection of eating disorders and anti fat bias. Anyone navigating healthcare systems that dismiss or harm them. People exploring intersectionality, fat liberation, and neurodivergent affirming care. Key Themes Eating disorders in larger bodies are real, severe, and often missed. Anti fat bias in healthcare prevents accurate diagnosis and lifesaving treatment. Medical trauma compounds over years and affects every modality of care. Compassionate providers save lives. Medical self advocacy is necessary but exhausting. Intersectionality affects both access to and quality of care. Joy and play become powerful acts of resistance. People in larger bodies deserve safety, dignity, and accurate medical treatment. The strange experience of deja vu sometimes lasts just a matter of milliseconds. Nonetheless it can still catch you off guard and be pretty unsettling. Deja vu means “already seen” in French. It refers to the sense of having already seen or experienced something you're confronted with, even though you know that you have never actually seen it before. For example, you visit a new city for the first time in your life, but at a precise moment you get the feeling like you've walked down a certain street in the past. According to Psychology Today, it occurs in 60 - 70% of people from time to time, while research suggests more than 97% of us have experienced it at least once in our lives. Has it always existed? Have scientific studies been able to shed any light on it? Can deja vu be dangerous? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Acts 8:26-40 demonstrates that gospel movements flourish when believers prioritize divine appointments over human logic, as Philip left crowds for one seeking soul on a desert road. The Ethiopian official, returning from worship yet still searching, found answers when Philip explained how the suffering servant of Isaiah 53 was Jesus. This encounter sparked the gospel's spread to Africa, proving that investing in one person's spiritual journey can impact entire continents for generations.

Experiencing the fringes of God's power through the gifts of the Spirit leads us to quantify the totality of God's power based on our limited experiences. God's Omnipotency goes beyond that, the creation of the Universe & the Earth in terms of size, matter and days taken might also not suffice in quantifying it. He can make dead things come back to life and calls those things that are not as if they were. His Omnipotence sets the basis of our trust in His ability and promises. Be blessed as you listen to this sermon.
Fast food restaurants like Wendy's are experiencing a slowdown in business The fast-food restaurant Wendy's is planning on closing hundreds of locations throughout next year because they continue to see a slowdown in spending from their customers. They said most of their low-income consumers are cutting spending and making fewer trips with smaller purchases at the restaurants. Wendy's increased prices after the pandemic at a higher rate than grocery stores and now other fast-food restaurants have begun to add value menus to keep customers coming back, but Wendy's has held firm and not created any values for their customers. Because of this they have seen their net income decline to $44.3 million from a year ago when it was $50.2 million. Over the past year the stock has declined from around $18 a share down to under $9 a share, which is a decline of 53%. With the reduction in the stock price, the dividend yield is now 6.5% and the company trades at 10 times earnings on a forward basis. This company may be worth looking into as an investment as within in the next 6 to 12 months we could see lower end consumers stabilize. The affordability index for people buying a home is the worst in 50 years People may be excited about buying a home because mortgage rates are around the lowest they've been in over a year, but the affordability of a home is still far out of reach for many. The reason for this, and we have talked about this for the last few years, is that the increase in the price of homes has far outpaced the increase in people's income. The 50-year average for a price-to-income ratio is around four times, and it reached a low in 1999 of around 3.6 times. But with the rapid increase of homes over the last few years, the price to income ratio has climbed to slightly over five times. Also not helping are the increases in home insurance costs and property taxes. Back in the summer of 2019, when looking at households earning $75,000, nearly 50% of those people could afford to buy a home. Today, when looking at those same households earning $75,000, only 21% would be able to afford a home. Back in 2012, the home affordability index was over 200, but it has now been cut in half to just about 100 with no signs of improving any time soon. I believe it will probably take 3 to 5 years to correct itself. If you look back in history, the affordability index does not change overnight. What will happen is probably incomes will increase slightly over the next 3 to 5 years and maybe the price of homes will either stay the same or decline slightly, which would increase the affordability index. What this means for people buying a home today is you should not have any aspirations of a rapid increase in the value of your home. What caused the problem was during the pandemic mortgage rates dropped to lows not seen in 50 years and that pushed up demand and the prices for homes climbed at a rapid rate. I believe this scenario is extremely unlikely to play out again! The brokerage firm Robinhood looks more like a gambling platform than a brokerage firm Robinhood initially went public at $38 a share in 2023 and the stock then fell to under $10 a share. It has recovered nicely since then as it's now trading around $110 a share. What has caused this shift and the huge increase in the stock price? One big reason is that the company has really allowed major speculation for their investors. Starting off with crypto, they have allowed people to buy coins like BONK, Dogwifhat and Pudgy Penguins. Just when you think there's no way they could come up with anything more speculative, surprise; they have come up with an investment known as prediction markets and event trading. Somehow the regulators have let this slide or maybe since government agencies don't move that quickly, it just has not been addressed yet. It appears for investors on their app that you can predict what the outcome will be of a football game, politics, contracts over economics, even if aliens will exist on earth this year. Chief Brokerage Officer, Steve Quirk, says this is the fastest growing business we have ever had. Robinhood stock trades over 50 times projected earnings and is looking for about $4.5 billion in revenue, which is an increase of 53% over last year. The growth appears to be there for the company, but there is so much speculation and insane crazy things there is no doubt in my mind that in the future many people will lose more money than they ever thought was possible by speculating on crazy things rather than investing into good quality businesses. A fallout in those risky "investments" could hurt Robinhood's reputation, which I believe would be bad for long term growth. Financial Planning: The Real Cost of Employer Coverage vs. Medicare When reaching age 65, sometimes there is the option to join Medicare or stay with an employer health insurance plan. This is most common when a spouse retires after age 65 and they have the ability to join their spouse's work plan. When comparing the cost of coverage, there is a key difference in how each affects your tax bill. Premiums paid through payroll for employer-sponsored health insurance are pre-tax, meaning you avoid federal, state, and payroll taxes such as the 6.2% Social Security, 1.45% Medicare, and 1.2% CA SDI tax in California. This is different from a 401(k) for example where contributions are only pre-tax from federal and state taxes. For someone in the 22% tax bracket, a $500 premium would be around $300 after the tax savings. Medicare premiums on the other hand are paid with after-tax dollars and are only tax-deductible for people who itemize and have total medical expenses exceeding 7.5% of AGI, which means very few retirees actually receive any tax benefit. Additionally, Medicare Part B and D premiums may be elevated due to higher levels of income because of IRMAA. Employer health insurance can vary in coverage and cost so at times Medicare may be a more comprehensive and cost-effective option, but it is necessary to compare the after-tax costs to be sure.

EPISODE 230 In a previous blog post and podcast entitled, The New Paradigm of the 4 Cs, I introduced the 4 C's of (1) Connection; (2) Cooperation; (3) Collaboration; and (4) Co-Creation, that are the new world paradigm for building meaningful personal and business relationships that shape the present and the future. Then I discussed the first concept of the 4C's, Connection in another blog post and podcast. Next, I discussed the second concept of the 4C's, Cooperation in another blog post and podcast. In this blog post and podcast, we go deeper on the third concept of the 4C's, Collaboration. Collaboration goes far beyond cooperation. Collaboration sparks the creativity. While cooperation aligns efforts, Collaboration combines individual strengths to produce something new. It is synergy, where the whole, the Collaboration end product becomes greater than the sum of its parts. How can you practice the concept of Collaboration in your own life? Within the New Paradigm of the 4 Cs, Collaboration, is not merely about working together, it is about unlocking collective brilliance, elevating individual contributions and preparing the conditions where co-creation becomes not only possible, but inevitable. Experiencing, acknowledging and embracing Collaboration creates a positive impact in your own life and in the lives of those you collaborate with. Australian Weather: Four Seasons in a Week. Jeremy describes Australia's weather as an "eclectic cacophony," experiencing four seasons in one week, including 80°F days and brutally cold winter-like maximums. Severe storms and reported nighttime funnels hit Queensland. The rapid growth of foliage due to this erratic weather is a dangerous omen, potentially creating extra fuel for future summer fires.
