In this week's episode, Will and James are joined by David Millar, a man who needs no introduction, but just in case: David's career in cycling spans decorated rider (he was the first Brit to wear all three Grand Tour jerseys) to fallen hero (he admitted to, and was suspended for two years for doping in 2004) to risen phoenix (he returned to the pro peloton as an outspoken 'clean' rider and raced successfully until 2014) to writer, broadcaster and commentator (up until this summer he was 'the voice' of ITV cycling along with co-commentator Ned Boulting) to business owner (with clothing brand Chpt III) to brand director at Factor bikes (finally nothing more to write in brackets). Here, David chats about turning pro back in the 1990s and those difficult earlier years; the devastation of ITV losing its TV coverage and him his job; his new life at Factor bikes and the science behind Factor's new superbike, the Factor One; Factor parting ways with Israel-Premier Tech for political reasons; what it's like having your sister, Fran, as CEO of Rapha; whether he's duty-bound to ride the Rapha Festive 500; and his general and utter love for cycling.Merry Christmas, and thanks for listening for a whole year (or just reading this bit, possibly never having listened at all).Interview begins at 11.34This episode is brought to you by the Hammerhead Karoo GPS bike computer. In this episode of The Cycling Podcast, we continue to round up the biggest stories from the ‘Costa crawl' of pre-season training camps, with our spotlight this week falling on Lidl-Trek and their new star signing Juan Ayuso. Before Dani Arribas reports back from Ayuso's curious ‘welcome' press conference in Spain, Daniel Friebe and Lionel Birnie give their impressions on the newly unveiled 2026 Vuelta a España route. On paper it may be the hardest Grand Tour in recent memory. But will that make for exciting racing on the road? The second and third parts of the episode feature exclusive interviews with Ayuso and also one of the men charged with coaxing the best out of him in his new team: Lidl-Trek's Head of Performance, Josu Larrazabal. "You can't rewind": James May takes to the stage with 'exciting' new show When you hear the name ‘James May', it's likely you think of cars, Top Gear, and The Grand Tour, but much like his co-stars, May has plenty of other projects. He owns his own pub and gin line, and has done countless shows visiting other countries, rebuilding toys and machines, and exploring life's questions. May's now onto his next journey – a live theatre performance that brings the stories of explorers to the stage. It's called ‘Explorers: The Age of Discovery', and May's bringing it to Kiwi audiences in August. It's been quite a busy year for May – something he told Mike Hosking was quite unintentional. “This year was going to be my, what I called a ‘dry run at retirement', to see how much I liked it,” he revealed. “But I've ended up doing a live tour, a couple of TV shows, various other odds and ends – it's actually the busiest year I've had for probably a decade, in terms of demands on my time.” “But maybe that's a good thing,” he said. “Maybe if I was left to my own devices, I'd sit in the garden and rot.” Despite his vast experience in the entertainment industry, May isn't terribly experienced with live performances. “We used to do Top Gear Live and then Clarkson, Hammond & May Live, but there were three of us doing it, plus our stunt driving team and various other circus performers,” he explained. “This one is quite intimidating because it just me." Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
The red flowered plant that shows up everywhere at this time of year–I saw a forest of them in Wegman's this morning– is called in Mexico the cuetlaxochitl, or the noche buena; but Americans know it by as the namesake of man who introduced it to the United States: poinsettia. Yet Joel Roberts Poinsett was a more interesting organism than that plant given his name. He was a South Carolinian who spent years away from the state, and was a committed nationalist and anti-nullifier; a world traveller when few Americans were; a slaveowner who other slaveowners regarded as potentially anti-slavery; an international investor who also labored for South Carolina local improvements; a diplomat who spent years if not decades trying to find a way to be a soldier. And that's leaving a few facets of his identity out. As my guest Lindsay Schackenbach Regele sums him up, “He was not the same, anywhere.”Lindsay Schakenbach Regele is with me to discuss Joel Poinsett, his era, and what he reveals about it. Andy Wilman is the legendary executive producer behind Top Gear and The Grand Tour, the creative force who helped turn a small, ageing motoring show into one of the most-watched programmes on the planet. In this revealing conversation, Andy sits down with Jake to open up about the chaotic, brilliant, and often bruising journey behind the scenes. From the early days when Top Gear was “held together by accidents,” to the lightning-in-a-bottle chemistry that formed between Clarkson, Hammond and May, Andy explains how a mix of creative instinct, insecurity, and outright stubbornness shaped the show's rise.He also discusses the strange alchemy behind iconic ideas like The Stig, the happy mistakes that became formats, and the moments where the team's success began to run away from them. Andy reflects on the personal cost of building a global juggernaut: the burnout, the pressure of chasing ever-bigger audience numbers, the fear of being “found out,” and the toll it took on his home life and mental health.. This episode goes far beyond cars. It's a conversation about leadership, the dangers of unchecked momentum, the creative magic that comes from imperfection, and the deeper human truth Andy only recognised with hindsight: that success means nothing if you never stop long enough to enjoy it.Want the exclusive story on the high-stakes Amazon deal that launched The Grand Tour? What do you get when you mix 40 years of Dungeons & Dragons lore, a 288-page setting book, and three podcasters who can't agree on how to pronounce "Myth Drannor"? Chaos. Pure, lore-filled, map-crossing, Elminster-cheese-eating chaos. In this episode, the RPGBOT crew dives headlong into Forgotten Realms: Adventures in Faerûn, a sourcebook that's equal parts nostalgia trip and travel brochure for DMs who think "Sword Coast" is just too mainstream. Show Notes In this episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, hosts Tyler Kamstra, Randall James, and Ash Ely crack open the 288-page Forgotten Realms: Adventures in Faerûn sourcebook from Wizards of the Coast, exploring what's new, what's reimagined, and what's just plain weird in the most iconic D&D setting of all time. Forgotten Realms: Heroes of Faerun (affiliate link) The crew discusses how the book merges setting material and short adventures, offering 51 one-shots that span the breadth of Faerûn, from the frozen wastes of Icewind Dale to the desert empires of Calimshan, and even the Fey-touched Moonshae Isles. Along the way, they highlight new DM tools, renown systems, and bastion support, while poking fun at typos, timeline contradictions, and the ever-mysterious fate of Karlach from Baldur's Gate 3. The review covers: How Adventures in Faerûn expands beyond the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide to become a true campaign-scale setting book. 51 new adventures—mini-campaigns that span levels 1–13 across multiple regions. Deep dives into the Dalelands, Icewind Dale, Calimshan, and the Moonshae Isles, with highlights on lore, adventure hooks, and design philosophy. The new renown and bastion systems, adapted for Faerûn's cultures and factions. Smart mechanical updates for survival horror (Icewind Dale) and environmental challenges (Calim Desert lightning storms). A surprising technological twist in Calimshan, where "mechanical wonders" push the setting toward Eberron-style magitech. Philosophical debates on epic vs. heroic fantasy, timeline sanity, and whether the word "wonk" is, in fact, a real word. Key Takeaways A True Return to the Realms: Adventures in Faerûn successfully modernizes the Forgotten Realms setting for the 2024 ruleset while honoring 40+ years of D&D lore. Massive Replay Value: With 51 one-shot adventures and regional micro-campaigns, this book can sustain countless play sessions. DM-Friendly Design: The addition of DM Toolboxes, renown tables, and bastion options helps DMs run localized adventures or full-scale journeys across the continent. Lore for Every Taste: Whether you love the snowy peril of Icewind Dale, the sizzling intrigue of Calimshan, or the mythic eco-fantasy of the Moonshae Isles, there's a region tailored to your campaign style. Respectful Revisions: The update smartly removes dated elements (like Calimshan's old slavery lore) and replaces them with creative world-building and inclusive modernization. New Adventuring Philosophies: Players are encouraged to embrace "main character energy"—epic fantasy with unique character backstories tied to Faerûn's iconic legacy. Tyler Still Can't Spell: The first typo in the book arrives in the opening sentence—and the RPGBOT crew finds that deeply relatable.

Back on the Free Outside podcast, I'm catching up with Will Murray after a wild eight months. Since Black Canyon he's gone all-in: new coach (CTS's John Fitzgerald), smarter long runs, and a rock-solid mindset that turned Javelina into a masterclass in steady, no surges. We talk about why he wore a pack while the front pack rocked belts (spoiler: seven bottles a lap and an ice pocket), how he practices mantras on long runs, and the simple crew rule that keeps big races from falling apart: do simple better. Will opens up about the detour through AFib, an ankle injury, a bout of giardia, and how cycling + hiking rebuilt fitness and trust. We also wander into big ideas—Western States, training camps, and what a Grand Tour of trail running could look like. It's process over hype, and it's really, really good.Chapters00:00 Intro & catching up05:30 All-in since Black Canyon08:30 Why get a coach (CTS/John)11:00 Race plan: steady, no surges13:30 Lap themes & mindset15:30 Pack choice & hydration (7 bottles/lap)18:00 Mantras in training20:30 Crew: “Do simple better”23:00 AFib, ankle, giardia detour26:00 Rebuilding with cycling & hiking29:00 Western States lessons32:00 Future goals & balance34:00 Shoes talk (Catamount, super shoes?)36:00 Stage-race / team ideas38:00 Wrap & outroSubscribe to Substack: http://freeoutside.substack.comSupport this content on patreon: HTTP://patreon.com/freeoutsideBuy my book "Free Outside" on Amazon: https://amzn.to/39LpoSFEmail me to buy a signed copy of my book, "Free Outside" at jeff@freeoutside.comWatch the movie about setting the record on the Colorado Trail: https://tubitv.com/movies/100019916/free-outsideWebsite: www.Freeoutside.comInstagram: thefreeoutsidefacebook: www.facebook.com/freeoutside

Joe's now watched two more episodes of Clarkson's Farm - and is absolutely loving it! So he and David are back to discuss even more about the show and the man himself, Jeremy Clarkson. They're both a little bit in awe of him but are now seriously regretting having a go at his Top Gear and Grand Tour shows. And wonder if they've blown their chances of him ever wanting to be a guest on Chatabix. Later in the show, they imagine what it would be like to appear on Clarkson's Farm themselves and also come up with a plan to teach him about podcasting. After months of chasing down five of the world's top cycling coaches—the minds behind Grand Tour wins, World Championships, and Olympic medals—I discovered one shocking truth: most riders train far too hard on their “easy” days. In this episode, I reveal the Zone 2 training secrets shared by Dan Lorang, John Wakefield, Vasilis Anastopoulos, Dr. Christian Schrot, and Dr. Stephen Seiler. Learn why pro cyclists spend 80% of their time riding “embarrassingly easy” and how this counterintuitive approach can unlock your speed, endurance, and long-term progress. Johan Bruyneel and Spencer Martin break down Jonas Vingegaard's ride to take the overall win at the Vuelta a España ahead of João Almeida and Tom Pidcock. They discuss what this means for Vingegaard, what it says about Visma's incredible Grand Tour project, and where João Almeida and UAE can go from here. They also wonder what Pidcock's surprise ride means for his chances at the upcoming World Championships, why Vingegaard won't be present, and what the future of the Vuelta is after Sunday's final-stage debacle, where the race was shut down mid-stage due to protests and the UCI's forceful response. Yes, that's right: Tom Pidcock's done it. In the midst of his varied and incredibly successful career, people had begun to doubt if Tom would ever finish on a Grand Tour podium. Not anymore. Luke and G were amongst them, but they're delighted to have a slice of humble pie on today's pod. Fair play, Tom. Of course, Jonas Vingegaard's done the business and won another Grand Tour. How long can he stay at the top? And will second placed Joao Almeida ever win one? Then of course, there's the all important British Gravel Champs to discuss. Did Swifty win? Well, yes - but which one? Conor or Ben? Listen to find out. See you next week for some big worlds chat. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Johan Bruyneel and Spencer Martin break down Mads Pedersen's hugely impressive stage win on Sunday, where he powered away from the early breakaway despite being a heavily marked rider, further extending his incredible streak of Grand Tour stage victories and Points Jerseys. They debate UAE's continued reliance on aggressive stage-hunting tactics and whether the team is leaning too heavily into stage success at the expense of the GC, while also discussing if the ongoing—and escalating—protests could alter the final outcome. Before signing off, they look ahead to the final week, previewing tomorrow's post-rest-day summit finish, how they expect the race to unfold, and who offers the best betting value. Powdered wigs. Satin breeches. Candlelit salons. And of course: sodomy. This week we're swanning back into Georgian England (1714–1837), a century of empire, cholera, imperialism, and very flouncy coats – but also one of the gayest domestic revolutions in history. With special guest Dr. Anthony Delaney (author of Queer Georgians, out today!), we explore the LGBTQIA+ pioneers who didn't just hook up in parks or "molly houses," but built full-fledged homes, lives, and legacies together.Inside this episode:
Alfonsina Strada (1891-1959) was an Italian cyclist and the first and only woman to compete in a men’s cycling Grand Tour. In an era when women were discouraged from sports, Alfonsina took up cycling at a young age and earned the local moniker “devil in the dress” for her fervor. In 1924, she entered the prestigious Giro D’Italia under the name “Alfonsin.” She was eventually disqualified from the race, but completed the entire 3,613 km route through brutal weather and became a national sensation. These women harnessed the power of the axle, pushing their crafts and professions forward through their works and lives. History classes can get a bad rap, and sometimes for good reason. When we were students, we couldn’t help wondering... where were all the ladies at? Why were so many incredible stories missing from the typical curriculum? Enter, Womanica. On this Wonder Media Network podcast we explore the lives of inspiring women in history you may not know about, but definitely should. Every weekday, listeners explore the trials, tragedies, and triumphs of groundbreaking women throughout history who have dramatically shaped the world around us. These diverse women from across space and time are grouped into easily accessible and engaging monthly themes like Educators, Villains, Indigenous Storytellers, Activists, and many more. The third Grand Tour of the 2025 season kicks off from Turin, Italy, at the weekend – and as ever we'll be there on the ground with our daily coverage. Before that, we take a deep dive into the route and riders with three of our Vuelta team: Daniel Friebe, Brian Nygaard and new signing Dani Arribas. Can Jonas Vingegaard reclaim centre stage with his nemesis, Tadej Pogačar, opting not to start? Or will Pogačar's UAE team-mates Juan Ayuso and João Almeida still be able to thwart the Dane and his Visma-Lease a Bike team? In Lionel's absence… time for some speculation. Just because the Tour de France is over, doesn't mean the party's over! I'm back with Tom Southam and Luke Durbridge for this month's Race Communique. Tom and Luke have just got back from a puncture-filled Hamburg Classic, and the Vuelta a España is about to kick off! I love the Vuelta - it's the Grand Tour I raced the most in my career, and I've got to say it's my favourite. Southam and Durbo disagree, so we kick off by having a three-way head-to-head: Giro VS Tour VS Vuelta. Which is best, and why? I made my case for the Vuelta, the hardest Grand Tour by a long way…as far as I'm concerned. Luke reckons the Tour is the best because, well, because it's the Tour. The Giro's case was made by Southam, who just loves the drama - he's obviously never watched the Vuelta! In this month's PeloChat, Durbo goes through this year's transfers and gives us his take on who's going where, why they're moving, and what it might mean for the sport. Remco to Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe is the biggest move of the year, and the young Belgian superstar has definitely raised some eyebrows by moving. Will he clash with Roglič? Will they be able to support him to win the Tour de France? Only time will tell. Luke's teammates Dylan Groenewegen and Elmar Reinders are stepping down to TDT Unibet - a second division ProTeam! An interesting move in an effort to get the young Dutch squad to the Tour de France in the next few years. He's also got some insight into Tom Pidcock's Q36.5's squad and their signings; some big riders heading that way too. Lots of moves, but Durbo's across it. Southam's diving into the modern breakaway in this month's Talking Tactics. Things have changed a hell of a lot over the last few years in the breakaway; we don't see 20-minute time gaps any more, and the breaks are kept on a much tighter leash. As the level gets higher and higher, the quality of the lower division teams is getting better and better, and smaller riders are more of a threat in the breakaways these days. It's great, and I love the exciting racing where the breaks actually have a chance, but shit, it looks so hard. Of course, we wind up with the Communiquiz. Tom's quiz master this week, and it's about Summer Classics. You'll have to listen to the episode to hear how this goes, but let's just say…I had a bit of a shocker. Guys, I hope you like this episode. I love catching up with Durbo and Southam, especially when they're in the midst of the racing season; bringing you this insight is what it's all about. Cheers, Mitch The Race Communiqué is brought to you by TrainingPeaks! Track, plan, and train smarter - just like the pros.
