Suddenly the world record conversation has two names in it. We discuss Werro's emergence and potential, the tactical error that may have cost Hodgkinson slightly, and what this means for the possibilities that the oldest world record in the sport falls this yearWhere does Femke Bol fit into all this? The Dutch 400m hurdles star changed events in search of new challenges, but the event is evolving so fast that the challenge looks significantly greater and she's not even raced outdoors yet! We discuss whether her 400 meter speed is a genuine weapon or whether the 400-800 double is as rare as it is for good reasonCooper Lutkenhaus is the most exciting teenager in track and field, already a world indoor champion, and now a Diamond League winner. Global Athlete has responded with a proposal for interim payments and a breakdown of the IOC's finances that is staggering. The IOC is sitting on nearly five billion dollars in reserves, and Global Athlete are asking for eight percent of the Paris broadcasting revenue. We ponder why Coventry made that statement knowing it would invite significant blowback, and what it reveals about the pressure she is under from inside the IOC. We also speculate on whether there are any good reasons to avoid paying Olympic athletesAnna van der Breggen lost the women's Giro on the final day from the pink jersey, her second Grand Tour lead lost this year. Stage 20 of the Giro d'Italia 2026, and Jonas Vingegaard finished his race the only way he knows how. A fifth stage win. And with it, his name joins the smallest club in cycling - riders to have won all three Grand Tours. Giulio Ciccone wrapped up the mountains classification. Eulalio had done enough to make the white jersey his own. And Kuss, emptied after yesterday's effort, was a different rider today. That's what three weeks of Grand Tour racing does to you. There had been talk of Visma giving Piganzoli the stage, but after Visma had burned through their riders earlier than usual, Jonas decided to put the stage to bed. Behind, Bernal emptied the tank for his teammate Arensman to hold onto 4th place, losing out on the podium spot to Jai Hindley. Ned Boulting and Jacopo Guarnieri report from the finish line. Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP   We're nearing the end of the Giro d'Italia, and it's been a crazy race so far. Jonas Vingegaard's dominating the GC, the sprint stages have been hotly contested by Magnier, Groenewegen, and Milan, and UAE are mopping up stage wins left, right, and centre. With just a few days left of the first Grandy of 2026, it's time for this month's Race Communiqué!    That's right, guys, Tom Southam, Luke Durbridge, and I are sitting down for a good old yarn about what's been happening over in Italy for the last few weeks before it all reaches a crescendo this weekend.    Whilst it's pretty nailed on that Vingegaard will take home the pink jersey and, with it, a place in the Grand Tour triple crown hall of fame, there's still a hotly contested fight for the podium spots and - more importantly - the best placed Western Australian, with Hindley, O'Connor, and Storer all sitting pretty in the top 10!    I raced the Giro twice in my career, and I have some fond memories from the land of espresso, prosciutto, and pretty chaotic racing. This grand tour is always a fan favourite; less mainstream than the Tour, but not as low-key as the Vuelta. But, as always, Southam disagrees; is the Giro actually boring?! He makes his case, but also takes a look at the Unibet Rose Rocket's strategy in this month's talking tactics. They're all in on winning a sprint stage because, as our old DS Klier says; “You can't dance at two weddings at the same time.”   In this month's PeloChat, Durbo takes a look at the concussion protocol, and what needs to be changed to better serve riders. This is a real hot debate in the sport at the moment and - after seeing Adam Yates covered in blood and mud battling back into the bunch before a DNS the following stage with concussion - it's clear that it's coming to a head (...if you'll excuse the pun). We discuss the current protocol, and what could be done better to give riders the support they need.   As always, we finish up with a CommuniQuiz, and Southam's up to bat as quiz master with a real tricky Giro special edition. I reckon even Coppi, Pantani, and Nibali would have been caught out with some of these questions, so play along at home and see how you get on! Guys, it's smoking hot over in Europe right now whilst I'm cosying up by the fire at the end of Autumn back home in Melbourne. Seeing the riders sweating away in the mountains is making me feel pretty smug - I don't miss that one bit…but then again, a good excuse to knock the top off a few cold ones.   Cheers, Mitch   Thanks heaps for listening to this month's Communiqué, brought to you exclusively by TrainingPeaks. Make sure you hop on TrainingPeaks virtual next Tuesday June 2nd at 8pm AEST / 11am GMT+ 1 (BST) / 6am EDT to join Southam and I for a virtual ride. Southam's going pretty well at the moment from what I hear, so I'll have to dive deep into the hurt box to try to get one over on him - why not jump on and give me a virtual draft? Or might this be the crowning moment for a surprising young star? Also on the agenda: free jazz race reportage, unwanted gifts and Denny Gray's 4am McDonalds order.Follow us on social media:Twitter @cycling_podcastInstagram @thecyclingpodcastFriends of the PodcastSign up as a Friend of the Podcast at thecyclingpodcast.com to listen to new special episodes every month plus a back catalogue of more than 300 exclusive episodes. The 11.01 CappuccinoOur regular email newsletter is now on Substack. For Italians, the Giro has always represented the sporting highlight of May – but for those living in Eastern Europe, for half a century, the Peace Race took centre stage. The 1986 edition was an unforgettable one, for reasons that had nothing to do with cycling. Ten days before the race was due to start in Kyiv, 90 kilometres from there, at the Chernobyl power plant, there was an explosion in one of the reactors. The ensuing catastrophe turned into the worst disaster in the history of nuclear power. Hundreds of billions of dollars, hundreds of thousands of Soviet soldiers and hundreds of thousands of evacuations would be required to restore at least the illusion of control. Meanwhile, a cover-up of unprecedented scale and unimaginable consequences began – and allowed the 1986 Peace Race to start in Kyiv. In the last instalment of his two-part series, Daniel Friebe covers what happened when the Peace Race peloton left Kyiv and over subsequent months and years, as the horrific implications of Chernobyl slowly revealed themselves. Meltdown: The Race to Escape Nuclear Disaster is a series written and produced by Daniel Friebe. The spring Classics campaign has come to an end and the Giro d'Italia is just around the corner. To bridge the gap between the two, and with Daniel Friebe absent as he prepares for the Giro, Lionel Birnie is joined by Tudor Pro Cycling's Larry Warbasse to wrap up the first part of the season, look ahead to the first Grand Tour of the year and react to some huge sponsorship news which may help Ineos Grenadiers challenge for the Tour de France once again. In part one Larry updates on the Tour of the Alps, where he and a lot of riders were fine-tuning their form ahead of the Giro and one of his teammates made a rapid and successful transition from speed skating to elite level cycling with a stage win. He also talks about his version of the all-day-breakfast and heat training indoors. In the second part, Lionel reports back from the big reveal which confirmed a new title sponsor for Ineos Grenadiers. From the Giro d'Italia they will be Netcompany-Ineos thanks to backing from a Danish IT company that is pumping in a figure thought to be around €100m over five years. The target is for the team to win an eighth Tour de France in the next five years, but its the introduction of Netcompany's AI software, Pulse, which makes this more than just a sponsorship deal. Pulse, which is used at several major airports, including Heathrow, will be used to help the team make 'better decisions more often'. We ask whether its use can extend beyond logistics and training and start to influence racing strategy and tactics. In the final part, we tie up all the loose ends from the spring and turn our attentions towards the Giro before handing over to Daniel and co for daily coverage of the Corsa Rosa, which starts in Bulgaria on Friday, May 8.Image courtesy of Netcompany-Ineos.Follow us on social media:Twitter @cycling_podcastInstagram @thecyclingpodcastFriends of the PodcastSign up as a Friend of the Podcast at thecyclingpodcast.com to listen to new special episodes every month plus a back catalogue of more than 300 exclusive episodes. The 11.01 CappuccinoOur regular email newsletter is now on Substack.
