In 2017, Megan Jastrab was an early guest on Hear Her Sports. She was 15 years old then and just, barely just, imagining her future cycling career. She is now a pro racer with Team Picnic PostNL. She's also an Olympic medalist and three time Junior World Champion. !!! In this episode, host Elizabeth catches up with Megan and hears about her recent experiences at La Vuelta Femenina, one of the three women's stage races called grand tours. Megan shares her thoughts about if La Vuelta should be called a grand tour, growth of women's cycling since she started, living in Europe, and her love of bike racing despite the rain and crashes. Megan began riding bikes with her brother Ryan at the age of eleven in her hometown of California. Two years later she competed in her first race, and by the age of seventeen, Megan was Junior World Champion in not only the road race but both the madison and omnium on the track. Hungry for more, Megan joined the national track team and came away from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with a Bronze medal in her first ever elite team pursuit, at the ripe old age of 19.Megan earned a double degree in Exercise Science and Business graduated from Milligan University. She now races full-time, based out of Sittard in Holland. Be sure to listen to her early episode (Ep18) because it's still applicable to youngsters wanting to get into the sport. Johan Bruyneel, George Hincapie, and Spencer Martin break down Sunday's stage 15 of the Giro d'Italia, which saw Carlos Verona take the win with a long-range solo attack and the GC come to life with UAE's Isaac del Toro easily defending his race lead while distancing pre-race favorite Primož Roglič. In addition to highlighting Del Toro's incredible strength so far, they dive into the question of whether he can realistically hold on to win the overall and become the second 21-year-old, behind his teammate Tadej Pogačar, to win the overall at a Grand Tour. They also discuss he and his UAE team's potential vulnerability due to the apparent confusion about who the team's leader is, and how the brutally hard third week will shuffle the final overall standings. Before they take off, they predict who will win Stage 16's critical mountain stage and how the GC picture will look afterward. Become part of the “Science of Sport” Discourse community via Patreon.Show notesThis week on Spotlight, we take a tour through some of the big stories in sport and sports science right now—from race tactics and concussion protocols to doping ethics, expert credibility, and how we identify and develop talent. We start with a lively discussion on the Giro d'Italia and that gravel stage. Was it thrilling unpredictability—or dangerous chaos? As the General Classification gets a dramatic shake-up, we debate whether the pursuit of entertainment justifies what some see as random, unfair risk and compromised race integrity. Do stages like this belong in a Grand Tour, or are they an unwelcome injection of chance into a sport built on precision and control? From there, we shift to cycling's ongoing concussion challenges. Jonas Vingegaard's recent comments compel questions about whether current policies do enough to manage brain injuries. Despite a policy that asks multiple people in the race to identify possible cases, the sport appears to be struggling to accurately identify who gets tested, when and how. Are critical medical decisions still slipping through the cracks because the wrong people, with misaligned incentives, are being asked to make them under pressure? Then it's time for our first featured topic: the evolution of the Enhanced Games. With swimmer James Magnussen chasing a chemically-aided world record and a million-dollar prize, we unpack the ethical and medical dangers of performance enhancement. What are the risks—for athlete health, for fairness, and for the messages it sends to the next generation?Next, we ask: How do you know who to trust? In an age of slick communication and pseudo-expertise, we explore the credibility of experts, and discover why true experts often sound less confident, not more. Ross explains how confidence can be a red flag, and why uncertainty and nuance are often markers of real scientific thinking. Finally, we dive into the messy reality of Talent ID. Ross explains four common errors—especially the “ghosts” created when resource-strained systems make early, high-stakes decisions that can harm both performance and people. We close with a brief segment on doping in Ironman, and why the “contaminated meat” excuse likely doesn't hold up—though science says it's not entirely impossible.LinksVingegaard on his concussion omissionThe UCI Concussion Policy that identifies all the right people to call for tests, but that frequently seems not to achieve thisDavid Epstein's recent article on fact checking and the illusion of expertiseOne example of the research studies used to sell BPC157, despite being in rats and showing nothing of the sort of promises companies make Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. You've seen Mara Roldan in the mix at some of the biggest races this year. She was in the breakaway at her first Amstel Gold Race and managed to finish in top 10. She recently completed her first Grand Tour, the Vuelta España Femenina. Despite a few crashes and injuries, Roldan not only made it to the end of the seven-stage event, she helped her teammates throughout. Yet, it wasn't that long ago that the 21-year-old rider, born in Whitehorse, wasn't really that into road racing.Roldan and her family—parents, twin sister and younger sister—spent about 10 years travelling North America in an RV (a Blue Bird Wanderlodge to be exact). At 13, she entered her first mountain biking race. By 15, she was training seriously, even as her family moved around. The young rider was diligent, making sure to get the workouts done. “It was kind of up to me to find places to train, whether that was on rollers in the back of a Walmart parking lot one night or on a super nice trail system the next night,” she says. “We just tried to make it work where we were because we were obviously never in the same place. It was a challenge, but I think also a really fun part about travelling.”In this episode of the Canadian Cycling Magazine Podcast, Roldan gets into her unique route to the WorldTour, the role of the development team Tag Cycling on her career, as well as the time Alison Jackson likely saved the young rider's life.Archive: Another Canadian has ridden on Roldan's team. From 2016 to 2022, Leah Kirchmann was on the squad based in Sittard, the Netherlands. Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP If there's one thing the Race Radio boys love more than a pun, a pint, or podcasting, it's the Giro d'Italia. The passion, the culture, and - of course - the racing; does it get any better?! It's a Giro special episode this month, and boy do these guys deliver. The Giro is generally regarded as the fan-favourite of all the grandys, and that's exactly what Harry & Stu are; super fans.  In true Giro fashion, the race has started with a bang over in Albania. We've already seen some amazing wins, some unfortunate early departures, and more excitement than you can shake an arancini at. The boys wrap up all the action so far, talk about some of the main characters of this year's race, and - as always - tell the stories  you won't hear anywhere else. The Giro is a race that Harry & Stu have spent a fair bit of time at over the years, so they've got some cracking stories to tell.  Here's what the boys had to say about this month's episode of Life In The Peloton's Race Radio: “We love ‘grand tour season' here at LITP's Race Radio, and in this week's ep we celebrate the grande partenza of the Giro d'Italia. We discuss the Lidl-Trek love-in, Josh Tarling's amorous post-stage antics, before lamenting the heartbreaking loss of Mikel Landa. There's a ‘tourism' section starring man of culture Tom Pidcock, and we reminisce about our own grand tourism at the Giro a few years back before pro cycling photographer Zac Williams sends us a voice note from the race. Finishing off with a review of two great races also on, Tro Bro Leon and the Vuelta Femenina, this show is amore infinito from start to finish!” I only started the Giro twice, and only reached the finish once, but I absolutely love it. It marks the start of Grand Tour season, and I love being able to follow the story of the race over nearly a whole month. The Giro is a race defined by the Tifosi - the fans - whether that's on the roadside, watching on the TV at home, or being pumped directly into your ears in this month's Race Radio.  Pull yourself a shot of espresso, pour yourself a crisp Italian lager, order a pizza; whatever you need to do to get into the Italian spirit - and enjoy this month's Race Radio.  Ciao, Mitch

Our Grand Tour now takes us to the turn of the century, and the dawn of modern comedy anime, with the classic series Azumanga Daioh: The Animation! Based on the celebrated four-panel manga by Azuma Kiyohiko, which has proven itself one of the most influential series to the last 25 years of comedy manga, the TV series is a landmark in its own right, helping to crack the code of how anime can adopt short, gag-driven, mostly plotless comedy manga, and in so doing helping to birth the ‘slice-of-life' genre now beloved around the world. Historical import aside, the show is also just a ton of fun, with a memorable group of characters we follow throughout their high school years, and a tremendous vocal cast giving consistently hilarious performances. It makes for an episode where we ourselves can't stop laughing as we talk about the show – and that's always a good sign. Enjoy, and come back next week as our Grand Tour takes us back out into space for the classic Studio Gainax OVA Gunbuster: Aim for the Top! Time Chart:Theme Song: 0:00:00 – 0:01:15Intro and History: 0:01:15 – 1:01:34Eyecatch Break: 1:01:34 – 1:02:18Azumanga Daioh Review: 1:02:18 – 3:01:13End Theme: 3:01:13 – 3:02:15Subscribe to our YouTube channels! Japanimation Station: https://www.youtube.com/c/japanimationstation  Purely Academic: https://www.youtube.com/@purelyacademicpodcastRead Jonathan Lack's movie reviews and stay up to date with all our podcast projects at https://www.jonathanlack.comSubscribe to PURELY ACADEMIC, our monthly variety podcast about movies, video games, TV, and more: https://purelyacademic.simplecast.comRead Jonathan's book 200 Reviews in Paperback or on Kindle – https://a.co/d/bLx53vK“Welcome to Japanimation Station” – Music by Thomas Lack, Lyrics by Sean Chapman, featuring Hatsune Miku. “Rolled Into One” – Music & Lyrics by Thomas Lack, featuring Hatsune Miku. https://www.thomaslack.com

S5E7 - YU-GI-OH! ‘Season Zero' Review: The Forgotten 1998 Anime by Toei Animation

Takahashi Kazuki's Yu-Gi-Oh! is a worldwide phenomenon that needs no introduction, since the anime has been airing in one incarnation or another every week for the past 25 years, and the card game is still going strong. But this week, our Grand Tour takes us to the most mysterious corner of the Yu-Gi-Oh! kingdom, and one many listeners probably haven't seen before: The original 1998 anime by Toei Animation, which ran for 27 episodes and one short film, adapting the first 7 volumes of Takahashi's manga. After airing on Japanese TV and releasing on VHS, the series has never been re-released, re-aired, dubbed, or distributed in any form, meaning it only survives through fan preservation efforts. And that preservation is very much worthwhile, because while this Yu-Gi-Oh! is an uneven, aesthetically wonky, and frequently bizarre series, it's also a deeply endearing one with a lot worth recommending, especially for fans of Takahashi's original manga and the material that never made it into the second, more famous anime adaptation. It also has an absolutely killer voice cast, both in the main ensemble and for the weekly guest stars, with a line-up of absolutely legendary seiyuu doing fantastic work. Like Yugi himself, this little show packs a whole lot of heart. Time Chart:Theme Song: 0:00:00 – 0:01:15Intro and History: 0:01:15 – 1:42:06Eyecatch Break: 1:42:06 – 1:42:51Welcome to the N.H.K. This week, our Grand Tour takes us to one of the most unique series we've ever covered: Gonzo's 26-episode cult classic Welcome to the N.H.K.! Based on the 2002 novel by Takimoto Tatsuhiko, this 2006 series explores Japan's hikkikomori (social withdrawal) phenomenon, modern Otaku culture, internet-era suicide pacts, and many more contemporary issues, doing it all with startling clarity, immense empathy, and a whole lot of very wacky humor. It's a finger-on-the-pulse series for Japan in the mid-2000s, but one with many resonances for viewers all over the globe, leading to a rich and engaging conversation between our hosts. There is no other show out there quite like Welcome to the N.H.K. – it almost feels like a conspiracy…Enjoy, and come back next week as we watch the Yu-Gi-Oh! series The Man doesn't want you to see: the original 27-episode Toei anime from 1998 (a.k.a. “Season Zero”). Time Chart:Theme Song: 0:00:00 – 0:01:15Intro and History: 0:01:15 – 1:09:15Eyecatch Break: 1:09:15 – 1:10:01Welcome to the N.H.K. Familiar icons of exploration like Pocahontas, Columbus, Sacagawea, and Captain Cook find new company in the untold stories of people usually denied the title “explorers,” including immigrants, indigenous interpreters, local guides, and fugitive slaves. He highlights female voyagers like Gudrid Far-Traveler and Freydís Eiríksdóttir, Viking women who sailed to North America in 1000 AD, and Mary Wortley Montagu, whose pioneering travels to Constantinople would lead to the development of the world's first smallpox vaccine. Figures like Ghulam Rassul Galwan, a guide for European travelers in the Himalayas, reveal the hidden labor, expertise, and local enthusiasm behind many grand stories of discovery. Other characters, like David Dorr, a man born into slavery in New Orleans who embarked on a Grand Tour of Europe and Egypt, embody discovery and wonder as universal parts of the human condition. As Lockwood makes clear, people of every background imagine new worlds. Adventurers from every corner of the globe search for the unknown and try to understand it, remaking the world and themselves in the process. Fifty years after the original Dororo aired on TV, MAPPA brought Tezuka Osamu's Dororo roaring into the 21st century with a radically different take – and it's the next stop on our exciting Grand Tour! With a reimagined conception of Hyakkimaru, expanded roles for characters like Daigo Kagemitsu and Tahomaru, and a striking modern animation style, MAPPA's Dororo is a worthy reinterpretation of a classic, and a fascinating point of comparison to the original. While our hosts disagree slightly on how effective they found the series' overall approach, it comes highly recommended from both, and we enjoyed breaking it all down on today's episode. Enjoy, and come back next week as look at one of the strangest corners of Tezuka Osamu's empire, and of anime in general: The Animerama film trilogy, consisting of 1969's A Thousand & One Nights, 1970's Cleopatra, and 1973's Belladonna of Sadness. Time Chart:Theme Song: 0:00:00 – 0:01:16Intro and History: 0:01:16 – 1:12:03Eyecatch Break: 1:12:03 – 1:12:50Dororo 2019 Review: 1:12:50 – 3:06:10End Theme: 3:06:10 – 3:07:11Subscribe to our YouTube channels! “Happily Ever After” – Music & Lyrics by Thomas Lack, featuring Hatsune Miku. https://www.thomaslack.com

Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP This episode is sponsored by NordVPN - get an exclusive NordVPN discount + 4 extra months with Life in the Peloton: https://nordvpn.com/pelosurf  After a big weekend of racing at E3 on Friday and Wevelgem on Sunday, I gave our man Laurence Pithie a call for another catch up to find out how his races went, and how he's feeling about the big one this coming Sunday; The Tour of Flanders.  First up, E3 Saxo Classic. Basically, a mini Tour of Flanders. Heaps of climbs including the Kwaremont, the Paterberg, and - Tom Boonen's favourite - the Taaienberg. If you do well at this race, you go into Flanders the following weekend as one of the favourites. Laurence's race didn't go his way, after suffering from a puncture and not being able to get back in the fight - but that's classics racing.  After E3 comes Gent Wevelgem. A flatter race more suited to sprinters, but still featuring some savage cobbled ascents of climbs like the Kemmelberg. This was Pithie's ‘breakout' ride last Spring, where he got away with Van Der Poel and Pedersen and put his name on a lot of people's radar as a real future star in these races. Again, it wasn't the result Laurence came for, but he's only 3 races into this classics campaign, and I reckon once he gets his tactical nous dialled back in, he'll be right up there; he definitely has the legs for it.  Talking to Laurence, I get the sense he's a real fighter, and hearing the absolutely crazy numbers he's putting out just to get up these brutal Flemish climbs without losing the wheel in front, I'm reminded once again just how hard the racing is these days. Despite being so young, he really knows his stuff about these races - he was rattling off the names to the climbs like a real seasoned Belgian.  The races keep coming thick and fast, and today it's time for Dwars door Vlaanderen. This is the last hit out before De Ronde, and it's one of those races that, when I was a rider, I'd see as a chance to bag a little result for myself. It's a lot shorter than the likes of Flanders or Roubaix at just 185km, and the start list is usually slightly reduced, with the bigger favourites resting up hard for Flanders. I reckon this is Laurence's chance for a result; he's got the legs, and he's had a few races to get his eye back in, so I think he'll come out swinging. In fact, by the time you listen to this ep, he might have already got his hands in the air! After Dwars door, Laurence and his boys are going to get some recon done for Flanders, then it's time to rest up before Sunday's 6 and a half hour battle.  The thing about the Spring Classics is that it's kind of like a mini Grand Tour. You're up in Belgium for about 3 weeks with the same team around you, bouncing between all these races - it definitely has a real grand atmosphere. Towards the end of my chat with Laurence, I got a chance to have a quick chat with his roommate out there in Belgium; ‘The Wombat' himself, Aussie sprinting legend Sam Welsford. Sam's dropped into Bora's classics squad for a few of the races, but also to bring some morale into the team. He's a really laid back dude, and hearing his positive attitude and relaxed demeanor, I can imagine the positive impact he'll have on the boys, some of whom have been racing out there for weeks now!  Lastly, I gave my old mate Heinrich Haussler a call. Heino was a classics star in his own right when he was a pro, and now works as a DS for Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe. He gave me some great insight into how the classics have changed since he and I were riders just a few years ago; the nutrition, the tech, the schedule - it's all come on leaps and bounds in such a short space of time, and made these races harder than ever.  Laurence - go well today, buddy. Show them what you're made of, and we'll catch up after Flanders!  Cheers, Mitch   Chapters 00:00:00 - Pre-race Nerves at E3 00:05:39 - E3 Race Debrief 00:10:54 - The Toll of Classics Racing 00:15:32 - Reset for Gent-Wevelgem 00:18:06 - In the Mix at Gent-Wevelgem 00:22:47 - Goals for Dwars door Vlaanderen 00:25:07 - Recon and Knowledge of Flanders 00:29:43 - Sam Welsford Joins the Chat 00:33:37 - Heinrich Haussler on the Modern Classics 00:50:23 - Final Recon Before De Ronde ----more---- I'VE WRITTEN A BOOK! #584 - Miguel Gomes on Grand Tour

This week we're excited to present a conversation from the 62nd New York Film Festival with Grand Tour director Miguel Gomes. An NYFF62 Main Slate selection, Grand Tour is currently playing at Film at Lincoln Center, courtesy of Mubi. Get tickets at filmlinc.org/tour. In this fanciful and high-spirited cinematic expedition, the uncommonly ambitious Portuguese filmmaker Miguel Gomes (Tabu, NYFF50; Arabian Nights, NYFF53) takes a journey across East Asia, skipping through time and countries with delirious abandon to tell the tale of an unsettled couple from colonial England and the world as it both expands and closes in around them. It's 1918, and Edward (Gonçalo Waddington) has escaped the clutches of beckoning marriage, leaving his bemused fiancée, Molly (Crista Alfaiate), in indefatigable pursuit. Edward gives chase from Mandalay to Bangkok to Shanghai and beyond, while Gomes responds with a splendid and enthralling series of scenes that use a magic form of cinema to situate us in these places both then and now, keeping us at a knowingly exotic traveler's distance while also immersing us in rhythm, texture, and emotional reality. Whether black-and-white or color, zigzagging or meditative in tone, scripted or captured as documentary, Grand Tour is splendid, moving, and human-scaled. Winner of the Best Director prize at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. A MUBI release. This conversation was moderated by NYFF Artistic Director Dennis Lim.
