Just one day after crossing the finish line in Rome to complete the 2025 Giro d'Italia, Tom Pidcock sat down with us in Salzburg for an honest, revealing conversation about the pressures, decisions, and ambitions that shape life at the very top of the sport. From the chaos of a three-week Grand Tour to the calm of a podcast studio, this episode captures a rare moment of reflection from one of the most versatile and compelling riders in cycling today. We delve into Tom's decision to leave Ineos Grenadiers and join Q36.5 - a move that made headlines across the road cycling world. The conversation also dives deep into his Olympic journey, with Tom reflecting on the incredible achievement of winning back-to-back gold medals in mountain biking and what it would take to return for a third shot at LA 2028. We also unpack THAT move at the 2024 Paris Games that secured him gold against French favourite, Victor Kortetsky. But this isn't just about wins and podiums. We also explore Tom's love for MTB and the sacrifices that must be made to be competitive in every discipline. We dive into what it actually takes to ride general classification in a Grand Tour, the mental battle of staying focused for 21 days straight, the sacrifices required to chase time on the world's biggest stages, and the emotional highs and lows that come with trying to hold it all together under immense pressure. Whether you're a fan of road racing, mountain biking, or simply fascinated by the psychology of elite athletes, this episode offers a rare look into the mindset of a rider who's redefining what it means to be a modern cyclist. Tom Pidcock's story is still unfolding, and this chapter is one you won't want to miss.

After a five-year drought, Great Britain finally has a rider back on the top step of a Grand Tour. Simon Philip Yates won the 2025 Giro d'Italia earlier this month in cathartic fashion, exorcising seven-year-old demons on the Colle delle Finestre, a mountain that had played host to the biggest undoing of his career. The two Toms get to know SPY a little better with a game of 'Whodunnit: Simon Yates or Adam Yates?'. They then doth their caps to the forgettable stage winners of this year's Giro, and name the race's other MVP. Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP The Giro has finished for another year, which means all eyes are now shifting to the big one; Le Tour. We're just under a month away from the Grand Depart, so who better to speak to than an Aussie legend that's won stages in all three Grand Tours, nearly won the Vuelta last year, bagged himself the Silver medal at the World Champs, and narrowly missed the podium at the Tour back in 2021 - that's right, it's Perth's own Ben O'Connor!  Now in his 9th pro season, Ben's just joined the Aussie team over at Greenedge. I wanted to know what it's like for him finally signing for the only Australian World Tour team as an Aussie rider representing over in Europe. He's a proud Western Australian, hailing from Subiaco over in Perth, and I wanted to know how he felt about the riding and racing scene over there; especially after they hosted the Aussie nationals over this year! Ben's career so far has seen him consistently improving year on year, and without doubt 2024 was the best season he's had so far. He won himself a stage early on in the Vuelta - completing the Grand Tour set to go along with his stages in the 2020 Giro and 2021 Tour - led the race for 2 weeks and almost won the overall before being Roglified by a storming Slovenian on his way to his 4th victory at the Spanish race. On top of this, Ben finished 2nd at the World Champs - establishing himself as a real one-day contender after getting the better of the likes of Van Der Poel and Remco!  Of course, a lot of you might know Ben best for his role in the ‘Tour de France: Unchained' series over on Netflix. I wanted to find out more about what it was like racing the biggest race of the season with cameras in your face all day, and how he felt about the way the series portrayed him.  As always, we end up talking about all sorts: Ben's career so far, the highs, the lows, fatherhood, what Ben likes doing away from cycling, and more. I also wanted to chuck in some listener questions! That's right, those of you that heard the call and sent in your questions for Ben'O get some airtime on this month's pod. I love hearing your questions and pitching them to Ben, so make sure you listen to hear what he had to say! I've loved watching Ben's career and seeing him grow into a real Grand Tour contender. How could I not, he's an Aussie - especially now he's over on Greenedge rocking that fresh MAAP kit! It's no secret that Ben's number one goal this year is the Tour de France, so I had to ask him if he thinks Pogi can be beaten. What does Ben think? You'll have to listen to find out… Enjoy this ep, guys. Ben's a great guest and I had a blast having a yarn with him about bikes, wine, Netflix, and heaps more. Good luck in France this July, Ben! Can't wait to see you giving it to old mate Tadej!  Cheers, Mitch! ----more---- This episode is brought to you by our friends at Saily. If you're heading overseas for your next ride or trip? In the Discourse Digest news roundup, Gareth and Ross tackle three stories where science and policy collide. First up, the Enhanced Games' latest scheme—inviting people to pay $399/month for performance-enhancing drug guidance under the guise of anti-aging and health. Then, a look at World Boxing's new sex screening policy for the women's category: what the language really means, why it matters, and how sport might manage it. Finally, a compromise attempt in California where extra medals are awarded to navigate the inclusion of trans-identified males in girls' sport—Gareth and Ross explore what's gained and lost in that trade-offAt 25:39. A new Listener Lens feature this week comes from Discourse member Tony, who asks: how should you judge your warm-up before a race? Ross and Gareth explore what a warm-up really prepares—neuromuscular readiness, not just heart rate—and share insights from fellow Discourse members who've fine-tuned their routinesAt 33:35. And Finally (not quite today!), British ultra runner William Goodge is under fire after suspicious data emerged from his trans-Australia record attempt. Ross recalls a similar case he investigated, and the duo asks: why, in an age of abundant tracking tech, are we still debating whether these runs really happened? At 42:58. This week's Center Stage belongs to one of the most dramatic finales in recent Grand Tour history. Simon Yates won the Giro d'Italia with a stunning final mountain stage raid—equal parts science, strategy, and surprise. Mike and Ross unpack the physiology and tactics behind Yates' triumph: Did del Toro and Carapaz concede the maglia rosa because they hit their physiological limits, or were they undone by tactical missteps and pacing errors? In addition to highlighting Del Toro's incredible strength so far, they dive into the question of whether he can realistically hold on to win the overall and become the second 21-year-old, behind his teammate Tadej Pogačar, to win the overall at a Grand Tour. Become part of the “Science of Sport” Discourse community via Patreon.Show notesThis week on Spotlight, we take a tour through some of the big stories in sport and sports science right now—from race tactics and concussion protocols to doping ethics, expert credibility, and how we identify and develop talent. We start with a lively discussion on the Giro d'Italia and that gravel stage. Was it thrilling unpredictability—or dangerous chaos? As the General Classification gets a dramatic shake-up, we debate whether the pursuit of entertainment justifies what some see as random, unfair risk and compromised race integrity. Do stages like this belong in a Grand Tour, or are they an unwelcome injection of chance into a sport built on precision and control? From there, we shift to cycling's ongoing concussion challenges. Jonas Vingegaard's recent comments compel questions about whether current policies do enough to manage brain injuries. Despite a policy that asks multiple people in the race to identify possible cases, the sport appears to be struggling to accurately identify who gets tested, when and how. Are critical medical decisions still slipping through the cracks because the wrong people, with misaligned incentives, are being asked to make them under pressure? Then it's time for our first featured topic: the evolution of the Enhanced Games. With swimmer James Magnussen chasing a chemically-aided world record and a million-dollar prize, we unpack the ethical and medical dangers of performance enhancement. What are the risks—for athlete health, for fairness, and for the messages it sends to the next generation?Next, we ask: How do you know who to trust? In an age of slick communication and pseudo-expertise, we explore the credibility of experts, and discover why true experts often sound less confident, not more. Ross explains how confidence can be a red flag, and why uncertainty and nuance are often markers of real scientific thinking. Finally, we dive into the messy reality of Talent ID. Ross explains four common errors—especially the “ghosts” created when resource-strained systems make early, high-stakes decisions that can harm both performance and people. We close with a brief segment on doping in Ironman, and why the “contaminated meat” excuse likely doesn't hold up—though science says it's not entirely impossible.LinksVingegaard on his concussion omissionThe UCI Concussion Policy that identifies all the right people to call for tests, but that frequently seems not to achieve thisDavid Epstein's recent article on fact checking and the illusion of expertiseOne example of the research studies used to sell BPC157, despite being in rats and showing nothing of the sort of promises companies make Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. In October 2020, Jai Hindley finished second in the Giro d'Italia. The then-24-year-old Australian had arrived. Two years later, after a near-flawless three weeks around Italy, he went one better. Giro d'Italia winner. Grand Tour champion. Legend cycling status secured.   Since then the Perth-born racer has worn the yellow jersey at the Tour de France, finished in the top 10, and is currently supporting Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe teammate Primoz Roglic at the 2025 Giro d'Italia.   He has a road cycling palmares that most young riders can only dream of - and this week on Just Ride, he joined Rob and Eliot from his training base in Switzerland to tell them all about it.   What's it like to line up next to Tadej Pogacar? How do you deal with leadership tensions within a team? Can he win another Grand Tour? How cool is it for Red Bull to own your team?! Just how much do elite road cyclists eat now? There's that and so much more.   Next time on Just Ride? We'll be on more familiar ground for Rob and Eliot with a return of a previous Just Ride guest. You'll have to stay tuned to find out who (hint: he goes very quickly downhill).   In the meantime, email justride@redbull.com to get in touch with Rob, Eliot and the team.

You've seen Mara Roldan in the mix at some of the biggest races this year. She was in the breakaway at her first Amstel Gold Race and managed to finish in top 10. She recently completed her first Grand Tour, the Vuelta España Femenina. Despite a few crashes and injuries, Roldan not only made it to the end of the seven-stage event, she helped her teammates throughout. Yet, it wasn't that long ago that the 21-year-old rider, born in Whitehorse, wasn't really that into road racing.Roldan and her family—parents, twin sister and younger sister—spent about 10 years travelling North America in an RV (a Blue Bird Wanderlodge to be exact). At 13, she entered her first mountain biking race. By 15, she was training seriously, even as her family moved around. The young rider was diligent, making sure to get the workouts done. “It was kind of up to me to find places to train, whether that was on rollers in the back of a Walmart parking lot one night or on a super nice trail system the next night,” she says. “We just tried to make it work where we were because we were obviously never in the same place. It was a challenge, but I think also a really fun part about travelling.”In this episode of the Canadian Cycling Magazine Podcast, Roldan gets into her unique route to the WorldTour, the role of the development team Tag Cycling on her career, as well as the time Alison Jackson likely saved the young rider's life.Archive: Another Canadian has ridden on Roldan's team. From 2016 to 2022, Leah Kirchmann was on the squad based in Sittard, the Netherlands. Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP If there's one thing the Race Radio boys love more than a pun, a pint, or podcasting, it's the Giro d'Italia. The passion, the culture, and - of course - the racing; does it get any better?! It's a Giro special episode this month, and boy do these guys deliver. The Giro is generally regarded as the fan-favourite of all the grandys, and that's exactly what Harry & Stu are; super fans.  In true Giro fashion, the race has started with a bang over in Albania. We've already seen some amazing wins, some unfortunate early departures, and more excitement than you can shake an arancini at. The boys wrap up all the action so far, talk about some of the main characters of this year's race, and - as always - tell the stories  you won't hear anywhere else. The Giro is a race that Harry & Stu have spent a fair bit of time at over the years, so they've got some cracking stories to tell.  Here's what the boys had to say about this month's episode of Life In The Peloton's Race Radio: “We love ‘grand tour season' here at LITP's Race Radio, and in this week's ep we celebrate the grande partenza of the Giro d'Italia. We discuss the Lidl-Trek love-in, Josh Tarling's amorous post-stage antics, before lamenting the heartbreaking loss of Mikel Landa. There's a ‘tourism' section starring man of culture Tom Pidcock, and we reminisce about our own grand tourism at the Giro a few years back before pro cycling photographer Zac Williams sends us a voice note from the race. Finishing off with a review of two great races also on, Tro Bro Leon and the Vuelta Femenina, this show is amore infinito from start to finish!” I only started the Giro twice, and only reached the finish once, but I absolutely love it. It marks the start of Grand Tour season, and I love being able to follow the story of the race over nearly a whole month. The Giro is a race defined by the Tifosi - the fans - whether that's on the roadside, watching on the TV at home, or being pumped directly into your ears in this month's Race Radio.  Pull yourself a shot of espresso, pour yourself a crisp Italian lager, order a pizza; whatever you need to do to get into the Italian spirit - and enjoy this month's Race Radio.  Ciao, Mitch

Our Grand Tour now takes us to the turn of the century, and the dawn of modern comedy anime, with the classic series Azumanga Daioh: The Animation! Based on the celebrated four-panel manga by Azuma Kiyohiko, which has proven itself one of the most influential series to the last 25 years of comedy manga, the TV series is a landmark in its own right, helping to crack the code of how anime can adopt short, gag-driven, mostly plotless comedy manga, and in so doing helping to birth the ‘slice-of-life' genre now beloved around the world. Historical import aside, the show is also just a ton of fun, with a memorable group of characters we follow throughout their high school years, and a tremendous vocal cast giving consistently hilarious performances. It makes for an episode where we ourselves can't stop laughing as we talk about the show – and that's always a good sign. Enjoy, and come back next week as our Grand Tour takes us back out into space for the classic Studio Gainax OVA Gunbuster: Aim for the Top! Time Chart:Theme Song: 0:00:00 – 0:01:15Intro and History: 0:01:15 – 1:01:34Eyecatch Break: 1:01:34 – 1:02:18Azumanga Daioh Review: 1:02:18 – 3:01:13End Theme: 3:01:13 – 3:02:15Subscribe to our YouTube channels! Japanimation Station: https://www.youtube.com/c/japanimationstation  Purely Academic: https://www.youtube.com/@purelyacademicpodcastRead Jonathan Lack's movie reviews and stay up to date with all our podcast projects at https://www.jonathanlack.comSubscribe to PURELY ACADEMIC, our monthly variety podcast about movies, video games, TV, and more: https://purelyacademic.simplecast.comRead Jonathan's book 200 Reviews in Paperback or on Kindle – https://a.co/d/bLx53vK“Welcome to Japanimation Station” – Music by Thomas Lack, Lyrics by Sean Chapman, featuring Hatsune Miku. “Rolled Into One” – Music & Lyrics by Thomas Lack, featuring Hatsune Miku. https://www.thomaslack.com

Takahashi Kazuki's Yu-Gi-Oh! is a worldwide phenomenon that needs no introduction, since the anime has been airing in one incarnation or another every week for the past 25 years, and the card game is still going strong. But this week, our Grand Tour takes us to the most mysterious corner of the Yu-Gi-Oh! kingdom, and one many listeners probably haven't seen before: The original 1998 anime by Toei Animation, which ran for 27 episodes and one short film, adapting the first 7 volumes of Takahashi's manga. After airing on Japanese TV and releasing on VHS, the series has never been re-released, re-aired, dubbed, or distributed in any form, meaning it only survives through fan preservation efforts. And that preservation is very much worthwhile, because while this Yu-Gi-Oh! is an uneven, aesthetically wonky, and frequently bizarre series, it's also a deeply endearing one with a lot worth recommending, especially for fans of Takahashi's original manga and the material that never made it into the second, more famous anime adaptation. It also has an absolutely killer voice cast, both in the main ensemble and for the weekly guest stars, with a line-up of absolutely legendary seiyuu doing fantastic work. Like Yugi himself, this little show packs a whole lot of heart. Time Chart:Theme Song: 0:00:00 – 0:01:15Intro and History: 0:01:15 – 1:42:06Eyecatch Break: 1:42:06 – 1:42:51Welcome to the N.H.K. 3/4: Explorers: A New History (A Norton Short) Paperback – August 5, 2025  by  Matthew Lockwood  (Author) https://www.amazon.com/Explorers-New-History-Norton-Short/dp/1324110317 Unfurling a tapestry of surprising and historically overlooked figures spanning forty centuries and six continents, historian Matthew Lockwood narrates lives filled with imagination and wonder, curiosity, connection, and exchange. Familiar icons of exploration like Pocahontas, Columbus, Sacagawea, and Captain Cook find new company in the untold stories of people usually denied the title “explorers,” including immigrants, indigenous interpreters, local guides, and fugitive slaves. He highlights female voyagers like Gudrid Far-Traveler and Freydís Eiríksdóttir, Viking women who sailed to North America in 1000 AD, and Mary Wortley Montagu, whose pioneering travels to Constantinople would lead to the development of the world's first smallpox vaccine. Figures like Ghulam Rassul Galwan, a guide for European travelers in the Himalayas, reveal the hidden labor, expertise, and local enthusiasm behind many grand stories of discovery. Other characters, like David Dorr, a man born into slavery in New Orleans who embarked on a Grand Tour of Europe and Egypt, embody discovery and wonder as universal parts of the human condition. As Lockwood makes clear, people of every background imagine new worlds. Adventurers from every corner of the globe search for the unknown and try to understand it, remaking the world and themselves in the process. Exploration is for everyone who sets off into the unknown. It is the inheritance of all. 1492 COLUMBUS LANDING
