About 10 years ago, Chris Welles took a big family trip (which he was hesitant to go on) to East Africa. The safari adventure was transformative for him. He fell in love with Kenyan wildlife and more importantly, the people. Chris's story is amazing! He ended up giving up his very successful executive recruiting business and without any experience whatsoever in the apparel business, he launched American Rhino. He also created a foundation to help support Kenyan wildlife conservation, as well as the local communities. There are so many life lessons learned in this episode. Plus a ton of laughs shared between Chris and Carl. Chris Welles was a 46-year-old executive recruiter in Boston, Massachusetts. He was happy in his job and he had no plans for a change. But in 2008 he took a summer vacation with his wife, four kids and two other families to Kenya. And the trip completely changed his life. Today he manages “American Rhino,” a growing clothing brand with a retail and online presence. The company sells shirts, pants, sneakers, canvas bags and now face masks. All of the manufacturing takes place in Africa. And 10% of our every purchase goes directly to supporting wildlife and land conservation in Kenya. The products that American Rhino produces are truly outstanding. Kikoy is a wonderful breathable fabric that has the feel and look of linen. Please visit www.AmericanRhino.com and check the shirts, shorts, canvas bags, sneakers and more. And remember 10% of every purchase goes back to Kenya to support wildlife conservation.

And it was the robot, FYI. Check out the exclusive content on our YouTube channel. Stay current with us on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
It's that time again... To celebrate the start of hockey season, this episode of HtD is almost entirely devoted to the NHL. (There's still a little bit of ball hockey. It's right there in the name, after all.) Anywho, the League will feature some pretty sweet alternate jerseys this year. Quack. Plus, Disney is giving you a Fastpass to watch games just about anywhere. And why isn't the Stanley Cup ten feet tall by now? Funny you should ask. The American Rhino has a literal screw loose. We're back. Did you miss us? This week we're celebrating Rusev Day by talking about some real super athletes. It's a whole tournament full of players in motorized wheelchairs. Plus, there's a smoking hot tournament heating up in Raleigh, and your American Rhino reviews a pair of specialized goalie sneakers, courtesy of Hagan Hockey. Machka! You animal! You blew it all up! On this episode of HIT the DEK, the American Rhino is coming in hot, and no pucks are given. We wrap up our World Championships coverage and talk about the Navy SEALs training hockey players, but that's not really why you're here. Gary has an unpopular opinion to share about John Tavares, and James tries desperately to stop hemorrhaging listeners. Good luck with that. Spicy takes abound, so strap in. This week we're happy to welcome friend of the show Lou Harvatin back to the podcast to catch us up on some exciting times for Charlotte Street Hockey... eventually. Every entrepreneur's journey starts with a big problem. That first hurdle—and hopefully, that first solution. Small and sometimes simple as it may be, this first moment contains so much ingenuity and inspiration, and captures just how resourceful entrepreneurs must be to continue along their path. Today, we're telling three mini-stories of first-time challenges: how the creator of the Butterie butter dish cracked its market research problem, how GrowSumo found the right customers (and avoided the wrong ones), and how American Rhino created an apparel brand within weeks.
It's hockey weather, am I right? Yes? No? Huh. Question: If you're, say, an arena plumber, is it appropriate to give the plant manager tips on how to keep the ice in good shape? And if your team is out of the playoffs, does it even matter? Plus, could we see the end of the American Rhino? Say it ain't so. Check out our shiny YouTube channel.
