Today's story is a fan favorite that was previously published as Episode 269. On a spring night in 2009, a middle aged married couple was closing up the local pizza place they ran in a small Virginia mountain town. The husband walked to the back of the restaurant and grabbed a large bucket of ice. He carried the bucket out the back door, and dumped the ice into the grass. He stood up and felt the cool breeze on his face – it was a nice change from the hot pizza ovens he'd been working around all night. But then, he heard screaming coming from inside the restaurant. Without thinking, he dropped the bucket, and rushed back inside. But when he discovered what was happening, all he could do was turn around and run for his life.   You can WATCH all new & exclusive MrBallen podcast episodes on my YouTube channel, just called "MrBallen" - https://www.youtube.com/c/MrBallen If you want to reach out to me, contact me on Instagram, Twitter or any other major social media platform, my username on all of them is @mrballen Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. This week we talk about Momentary Lily! Jack poked fun at the “twist” about the main characters almost immediately, thanks to some weird-looking digital tears he noticed, while Rick didn't catch on until way later in episode seven. Both of us were annoyed by how the show forced emotional moments, killing off characters you barely knew and then spending way too much time trying to make you feel bad about it. Jack wasn't a fan of the action either, since the main girl is basically just a passenger on a sentient guitar that fights on its own. We also had a lot to say about the lack of common sense, like Rick's rant about the group freezing in the snow while holding a sword that emits heat! Jack tried to defend it as a high-stress mistake, but even he was fed up with the annoying catchphrases, and we both agreed it was ridiculous that a post-apocalyptic world still has working internet just for bikini videos.About the anime:Set in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by mechanical invaders known as Wild Hunts, Momentary Lily follows Renge Kasumi, a lonely amnesiac who has a unique power to fight back against these monstrosities. After wandering through a desolated city, she joins forces with five other girls, Yuri, Erika, Hinageshi, Sazanka, and Ayame each one wielding specialized weapons called Andvari to combat the mechanical threat. While the battles are central to their survival, the story tries to focus on the quiet, human moments of their daily lives, such as the bond-building experience of cooking meals from scavenged canned goods in the ruins. But then everything changes as we discover that they are actually alien-created copies rather than true humans.Next Week's Pick: “Failure frame ”Have you had the chance to watch Momentary Lily or any of our previous selections? When an emerging technology company quietly secures a larger slice of the engine driving its future, it can mark a seismic shift in long-term value creation. In this case, HPQ Silicon Inc. is lifting its stake in its French partner Novacium SAS by another 8.4 percentage points, taking ownership from 28.4% to 36.8% through an all-share deal valued at:C$4,033,425 / EUR 2.5 millionFor a portfolio spanning silicon anode batteries, autonomous hydrogen, and waste-to-value technologies, this higher stake deepens HPQ's claim on a multi-platform energy-transition business built in Europe. The valuation is unchanged from HPQ's 2025 step-up, but the underlying technology set and commercialization visibility are not. And that's where the leverage lies.Stake Jump: HPQ is acquiring 84 additional Novacium shares, raising ownership from 28.4% to 36.8% for C$4,033,425 (EUR 2.5M), at the same implied ~EUR 30M valuation used in February 2025.Share Currency: Consideration is 22,407,916 HPQ common shares at C$0.18, representing roughly 5.2% dilution in exchange for an 8.4% incremental equity stake. All shares are locked up for four months and one day.Platform Power: Novacium's portfolio spans:2025 saw patents filed, GEN3 batteries surpass 1,000 cycles, and strategic collaborations initiated.Global Upside: Beyond HPQ's exclusive North American licenses, the larger equity position increases HPQ's participation in international revenues and royalty streams tied to Novacium's technologies.Capital Discipline: The deal is arm's length, subject to TSX Venture Exchange and regulatory approvals, and preserves HPQ's cash while maintaining its renewed option framework to further increase ownership over the next four years. For decades, IP-heavy energy-transition platforms have created most of their value in private structures or offshore vehicles, leaving public-market investors with indirect or limited exposure.Legacy models often:Fragment licensing across regionsMisalign founders and partnersForce public partners to fund R&D without proportionate ownershipThat structure can work when technologies are speculative, but becomes a liability once platforms start to de-risk and commercialization paths come into focus.Novacium is an IP and execution engine advancing three interlocking pillars:Silicon anode materialsAutonomous hydrogen systemsCircular waste-to-value processesAll rooted in silicon and battery know-how.In 2025:GEN3 18650 cells using Novacium's silicon-based anodes retained 80%+ capacity after 900–1,000 cyclesDelivered roughly 30% more cumulative energy versus graphiteNew patents were filed on:HPQ's move to increase its equity stake at the same ~EUR 30M valuation effectively buys more of that de-risked portfolio at last year's price.By moving now, and paying in shares instead of cash, HPQ:Secures a stronger economic and governance positionPreserves balance-sheet flexibilityIn markets where batteries, hydrogen, and circular processes are converging into multi-billion-dollar verticals, HPQ is tightening its grip on the European engine underpinning much of its future pipeline.“This isn't a tactical tweak; it's a disciplined capital allocation decision. We're using shares to buy a bigger piece of a platform that's already de-risking and starting to blossom, without touching our cash. It moves us from just licensing North America to having a much larger claim on value creation across every geography as Novacium's technologies go to work.”HPQ is effectively trading 5.2% dilution today for a meaningfully larger stake in an asset whose IP, patents, and early battery and hydrogen results suggest far greater optionality than its unchanged ~EUR 30M valuation implies. For investors, this looks less like a one-off corporate reshuffle and more like HPQ's Google-buys-YouTube moment, a deliberate move to own more of the platform that could power its long-term energy-transition growth.

Episode 20 of Matt Likes Beer finds Matt deep into Dry January 2026, reflecting on health goals, pre-recorded episodes, and the realities of balancing beer enthusiasm with personal wellness. The beer in the spotlight is Dollar Slice, a hazy IPA from Other Half Brewing in Brooklyn, New York—chosen initially for its pizza-inspired label and unexpected name. Matt shares his prior experience with Other Half, noting that while he's enjoyed their IPAs before, this particular beer was a classic case of label buying—a marketing reality many craft beer fans know well. A deeper look into the brewery's catalog reveals a diverse lineup beyond IPAs, including lagers, sours, and spontaneous fermentation beers, even though hop-forward styles clearly dominate their production. During the tasting, Matt addresses an important judging dilemma: while the can simply says “India Pale Ale,” further research—and the beer's unmistakable appearance—confirm it should be evaluated as a 21C Hazy IPA. Using BJCP guidelines, he breaks down the beer's opaque yellow appearance, exceptional head retention, intense citrus and tropical fruit aroma, and luxuriously soft, creamy mouthfeel. Flavor-wise, Dollar Slice delivers vibrant orange zest, pineapple, and juice-forward hop character from Citra and Galaxy hops, earning high marks across the board. A slight lingering off-flavor prevents a near-perfect score, but the beer still lands at an impressive 41 out of 50, firmly in the Excellent range. Matt emphasizes that without this minor issue—possibly isolated to the can or palate—this could easily have been a mid-40s standout. With no one-star reviews to read, the episode closes on a thoughtful soapbox moment about Untappd, consumer-driven beer trends, and the disconnect that can occur when breweries resist making the styles people actually want to drink. Matt balances critique with humility, acknowledging the complexity of running a brewery while reaffirming his belief that variety, responsiveness, and drinker feedback matter.

As European imperialism heated up in Africa in the late 1800's, King Leopold II of Belgium put into motion one of the most ambitious and villainous plans in all of European history - the theft of the entire Congo. Utilizing the work of explorer Henry Morton Stanley, European animus towards the Afro-Arab Slave Trade, the creation of dubious committees and associations, international lobbying of governments, public relations campaigns, and bogus treaties with the people of Congo, Leopold understood that "...we must be cautious, clever and quick to act. I would not expose myself to displeasing the English or letting escape a good opportunity to get some of this beautiful African cake." In 1885, the countries of Europe gave their blessing to Leopold's slice of cake at the Berlin Conference. This episode is Part 2 in a series on the Belgian Congo. It takes a look at how Leopold II of Belgium went from being a monarch of tiny Belgium to the owner of the biggest European colony in Africa. Upcoming episodes will discuss atrocities in the Congo, resistance and reform movements, and more.  -Consider Supporting the Podcast!- Leave a rating or review on apple podcasts or spotify! This week we are talking about The Great Cleric, an Isekai that trades the typical overpowered hero trope for a salaryman just trying not to die a second time. We largely spend some time debating the show's unique mechanics, specifically the protagonist's grueling training regimen and his constant consumption of the mysterious "Substance X." Rick got hung up on some details  but overall he felt that the show had a book end. Jack found it to be an easy watch and an incredibly easy binge so much so that he knocked it out in a single sitting. He's much more forgiving of the wide-open ending, viewing it as a setup that actually has him considering picking up the light novels just to see where the story goes next. About the anime:The Great Cleric takes a slightly different approach to the standard isekai formula. Instead of an overpowered hero being summoned to defeat a demon lord, we follow a salaryman who gets reincarnated as a 15-year-old named Luciel. And his main motivation is pure survival and since he's terrified of dying young again, he chooses the job class "Healer" as his main job. However, realizing that healers often get exploited or killed because they can't fight back he also chooses the martial arts skill as a back up to help him and he decides to train his body to an absurd degree at the Adventurer's Guild. Where more chaos ensues as we drinks something called "Substance X" with daily training. It's essentially a workplace drama disguised as a fantasy anime, focusing on bureaucracy, corruption in the Healer's Guild, and the grind of self-improvement.Next Week's Pick: “Burst Angel”Have you had the chance to watch The Great Cleric or any of our previous selections? When the new year rolls around, many people are quick to set goals and make resolutions. Unfortunately, this is often a distraction from the deeper work that we all have to do. There's usually something that we're hiding behind, something that we don't want to look at, because we know that work will be hard… really hard. We'd rather focus on the shiny external work, rather than excavating the thing that's really keeping us stuck. But what if life forces us to look at it? Isn't it better to choose to do the work before it brings us to our knees? As we journey further into 2026, consider uncovering the thing that's really holding you back. Hold it up to the mirror and bravely start excavating.
