Episode 20 of Matt Likes Beer finds Matt deep into Dry January 2026, reflecting on health goals, pre-recorded episodes, and the realities of balancing beer enthusiasm with personal wellness. The beer in the spotlight is Dollar Slice, a hazy IPA from Other Half Brewing in Brooklyn, New York—chosen initially for its pizza-inspired label and unexpected name. Matt shares his prior experience with Other Half, noting that while he's enjoyed their IPAs before, this particular beer was a classic case of label buying—a marketing reality many craft beer fans know well. A deeper look into the brewery's catalog reveals a diverse lineup beyond IPAs, including lagers, sours, and spontaneous fermentation beers, even though hop-forward styles clearly dominate their production. During the tasting, Matt addresses an important judging dilemma: while the can simply says “India Pale Ale,” further research—and the beer's unmistakable appearance—confirm it should be evaluated as a 21C Hazy IPA. Using BJCP guidelines, he breaks down the beer's opaque yellow appearance, exceptional head retention, intense citrus and tropical fruit aroma, and luxuriously soft, creamy mouthfeel. Flavor-wise, Dollar Slice delivers vibrant orange zest, pineapple, and juice-forward hop character from Citra and Galaxy hops, earning high marks across the board. A slight lingering off-flavor prevents a near-perfect score, but the beer still lands at an impressive 41 out of 50, firmly in the Excellent range. Matt emphasizes that without this minor issue—possibly isolated to the can or palate—this could easily have been a mid-40s standout. With no one-star reviews to read, the episode closes on a thoughtful soapbox moment about Untappd, consumer-driven beer trends, and the disconnect that can occur when breweries resist making the styles people actually want to drink. Matt balances critique with humility, acknowledging the complexity of running a brewery while reaffirming his belief that variety, responsiveness, and drinker feedback matter.

As European imperialism heated up in Africa in the late 1800's, King Leopold II of Belgium put into motion one of the most ambitious and villainous plans in all of European history - the theft of the entire Congo. Utilizing the work of explorer Henry Morton Stanley, European animus towards the Afro-Arab Slave Trade, the creation of dubious committees and associations, international lobbying of governments, public relations campaigns, and bogus treaties with the people of Congo, Leopold understood that "...we must be cautious, clever and quick to act. I would not expose myself to displeasing the English or letting escape a good opportunity to get some of this beautiful African cake." In 1885, the countries of Europe gave their blessing to Leopold's slice of cake at the Berlin Conference. This episode is Part 2 in a series on the Belgian Congo. It takes a look at how Leopold II of Belgium went from being a monarch of tiny Belgium to the owner of the biggest European colony in Africa. Upcoming episodes will discuss atrocities in the Congo, resistance and reform movements, and more.  -Consider Supporting the Podcast!- Leave a rating or review on apple podcasts or spotify! FAP-371 The Great Cleric - He Just Doesn't Want to Die

Feudal Anime Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 26, 2026 32:05

This week we are talking about The Great Cleric, an Isekai that trades the typical overpowered hero trope for a salaryman just trying not to die a second time. We largely spend some time debating the show's unique mechanics, specifically the protagonist's grueling training regimen and his constant consumption of the mysterious "Substance X." Rick got hung up on some details  but overall he felt that the show had a book end. Jack found it to be an easy watch and an incredibly easy binge so much so that he knocked it out in a single sitting. He's much more forgiving of the wide-open ending, viewing it as a setup that actually has him considering picking up the light novels just to see where the story goes next. About the anime:The Great Cleric takes a slightly different approach to the standard isekai formula. Instead of an overpowered hero being summoned to defeat a demon lord, we follow a salaryman who gets reincarnated as a 15-year-old named Luciel. And his main motivation is pure survival and since he's terrified of dying young again, he chooses the job class "Healer" as his main job. However, realizing that healers often get exploited or killed because they can't fight back he also chooses the martial arts skill as a back up to help him and he decides to train his body to an absurd degree at the Adventurer's Guild. Where more chaos ensues as we drinks something called "Substance X" with daily training. It's essentially a workplace drama disguised as a fantasy anime, focusing on bureaucracy, corruption in the Healer's Guild, and the grind of self-improvement.Next Week's Pick: “Burst Angel”Have you had the chance to watch The Great Cleric or any of our previous selections? This week we talked about “My Tiny Senpai” and the discussion was a bit of a ride because we spent the first half totally talking past each other. Jack was trying to give the Manager credit as well shed light on what he was doing, while Rick was convinced he was talking about the main couple's lack of progress. Once we cleared that up, we both agreed that for an office romance, these characters and the anime as a whole acted way too much like a high school show rather than a workplace romance show. Rick argued that the show's "goldfish memory" where progress basically reset every episode made him feel anxious through the whole thing. And Jack felt like the whole  season felt like one giant filler episode. About the anime:My Tiny Senpai is basically a cozy office romance slice of life type of show where Takuma Shinozaki is a new-ish employee trying to keep his head above water, and his senior coworker Shiori Katase keeps swooping in with praise, encouragement, followed up with a “I'm just being a good senpai” type of feeling and mentality that keeps throwing him off his game. The catch is, she's tiny, she's adorable, and way more doting than a normal workplace relationship would/should allow.Next Week's Pick: “The Great Cleric”Have you had the chance to watch My Tiny Senpai or any of our previous selections? When the new year rolls around, many people are quick to set goals and make resolutions. Unfortunately, this is often a distraction from the deeper work that we all have to do. There's usually something that we're hiding behind, something that we don't want to look at, because we know that work will be hard… really hard. We'd rather focus on the shiny external work, rather than excavating the thing that's really keeping us stuck. But what if life forces us to look at it? Isn't it better to choose to do the work before it brings us to our knees? As we journey further into 2026, consider uncovering the thing that's really holding you back. Hold it up to the mirror and bravely start excavating. This week we talk about A Ninja and an Assassin Under One Roof. We joke about it being not exactly kid-friendly, talk about how side characters get introduced and immediately die for anyone who is not a MC, and we get weirdly invested in the “rules” behind the cleanup powers once the show finally reveals limits. We also talk about how the assassin is frugal with their money but also at the same time they are really messy. We cann't help but laugh at how the series undercuts heartfelt moments with absurd gags including the whole robot-replacement scenario. By the end, we land on it being watchable and it is entertaining in bursts, although it is a little slow at times, and it leaves some plot holes and unfinished plot lines. About the anime:Satoko is an unwitting runaway ninja with basically zero survival skills, and when she's about to starve until she runs into Konoha, a normal-looking high school girl, steps in and helps her out. The twist is, Konoha isn't normal at all, she's actually an assassin. Thanks to Satoko's unique skill and high luck they strike up a deal. Satoko gets a roof over her head, food and a little money, while Konoha gets help cleaning up the evidence after jobs, because Satoko's ninjutsu can conveniently turn things into leaves and make problems disappear, and a live-in house keeper. Meanwhile, Satoko's old ninja world won't let her just vanish quietly, so their daily lives keeps getting interrupted by all the other ninjas showing up at the worst times. That is just a taste of all the shenanigans that happen in this show.Next Week's Pick: “My Tiny Senpai”Have you had the chance to watch A Ninja and an Assassin Under One Roof or any of our previous selections? This week talk about Her Blue Sky. We started clearing up some misconceptions that Rick had “13 years ago vs. 13-year-old” confusion and then we dove into the misconceptions about the guitar and why it was still weirdly brand new. From there, we talked about the main hook, the younger and older versions of Shinnosuke existing as separate people, with the younger one absolutely tearing into his older self later in the story, which led us into talking about growing up, losing your spark, and how life can jade you without fully killing the dream you started with. We also talked about the “eyeball star” birthmark idea, what it's supposed to mean, and why it initially threw us off and finally rounding it off with us swinging back to the music. One of us expected it to be way better, the other expected total garbage and was surprised it was handled tastefully. Overall, we did agree that it's a straightforward, linear story that avoids the “wait, what is happening?” problem, dodges the awkward story directions it could've taken, and lands on a message that hit us. Say what you need to say, don't let “good reasons” turn into lifelong regret, and recognize the quiet sacrifices people make.About the anime:Her Blue Sky follows Aoi, a high school bassist living in a quiet mountain town, who is itching to head to Tokyo and chase music, lives with her older sister Akane who once gave up her own dream of moving to Tokyo with her boyfriend Shinnosuke after their parents died so she could raise Aoi, and is focused on a life that was built on sacrifice and what-ifs but never regretting it or forsaking. But then everything gets shaken up when adult Shinnosuke returns to town for a local music festival and, at the same time, his teenage self suddenly appears before Aoi, like a living spirit from thirteen years ago. Now caught between past and present, the sisters and the two Shinnosukes are forced to confront old regrets, unspoken feelings, and the weight of promises that were never kept, that's all wrapped in a story about music, growing up, and figuring out how to move forward without forgetting the people who got you there.Next Week's Pick: “Lady Death”Have you had the chance to watch Her Blue Sky or any of our previous selections?
