From Irish pubs to private barrel picks, we map the culture, the pairings, and the growing community.• five pillars of Golf Cask: golf, whiskey, cigars, travel, community• designing “whiskey golf trails” from cigar to course• pairing logic: rye complements, bourbon counterpoints• links vs parkland and how terrain shapes pours• the art and timing of single-barrel rye picks• clubs expanding whiskey programs and private barrels• AI as a creative assistant for editing and design• event design, small groups, and shared experiences• Irish season, travel strategies, and airport bottle hacks• younger golfers moving toward premium sippers• dream foursomes, dream pours, and the 19th holeRemember, good bourbon equals good times with good friendsMake sure you drink responsibly, don't drink and drive, and live your life like us, uncut and unfilteredWhat if your round didn't end at the flag but kept unfolding through flavor, smoke, and conversation? We sit down with Brian, longtime NCAA golf coach and founder of Golf Cask, to explore a lifestyle that blends golf, whiskey, and cigars into one intentional experience. From the first tee to the 19th hole, he shows how to choose pours that match the moment, pair cigars that elevate rather than overwhelm, and design “whiskey golf trails” that start with a stick, find the right bottle, and finish on a course that fits the mood.Brian shares how an evening in an Irish pub sparked the vision for a community built on five pillars: golf, whiskey, cigars, travel, and connection. We dig into the craft—why rye steals his heart with herbal punch, how single barrels demand decisive timing, and when a mellow corn or high-rye bourbon can surprise you. We compare links and parkland courses, then map pairings to terrain: sea-breeze malts for open dunes, caramel-rich bourbons for tree-lined fairways, and fuller cigars when the whiskey goes light and airy. You'll hear how clubs are expanding whiskey programs, venturing into private barrel picks, and turning tastings into member magnets. This conversation also reveals the practical side: building a 100-page magazine, using AI to tighten copy and speed creative, capping events at a dozen to keep the vibe right, and traveling smart for Irish season with bottle limits and duty-free strategy. We talk stateside vs European culture—party during the round or save it for the pub—and why the best pour is the one shared with the right people after the right day. Whether you love rye, chase single barrels, or just want a better 19th hole, this is a roadmap for slowing down and savoring what matters.Subscribe, share with a friend who loves golf or whiskey, and leave a review to help more people find the show. New way to buy Property in Companies (Must Watch for Investors)     Is trust lending dead, or is it still a viable strategy for property investors?   In this episode, Todd together with Jeremy Iannuzzelli unpacks the start of 2026, covering Bitcoin crashes, rising interest rates, and proposed capital gains tax changes by Jim Chalmers. With markets shifting rapidly, many investors are questioning whether trusts remain a viable way to finance property.   They break down the key differences between trusts and companies, how company to company lending works, and why more investors are moving to corporate structures to retain earnings and reinvest efficiently. The discussion includes tax treatment, depreciation, capital gains implications, and the "tax at the tail" issue when withdrawing profits.   If you're a property investor or a business owner, this episode highlights why the right structure today can shape wealth for years to come     Get in touch with our amazing episode contributors & sponsors:   Jeremy Iannuzzelli:

Rethinking Education
Seven minutes out of every thirty are lost to low-level disruption. But why?

Rethinking Education

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 1, 2026 62:46

In this episode, featuring a webinar we ran this week, Tara Elie and Dr James Mannion explore a question that many school leaders are quietly wrestling with: Why do so many behaviour initiatives fail to deliver sustained change? Across the system, the signals are hard to ignore – rising suspensions, internal removals, persistent absence, staff exhaustion, and a growing sense that behaviour reform is absorbing huge energy without always shifting underlying patterns. In this conversation, we argue that two critical ideas are largely missing from the behaviour debate: - The psychology of mattering - Implementation and improvement science When combined, these lenses offer a more systemic, more hopeful way forward. Part 1: The psychology of mattering Tara introduces the concept of mattering, drawing on the work of Morris Rosenberg and contemporary positive psychology. Mattering has two components: feeling valued, and adding value. We explore: - The difference between mattering and self-esteem - What staff mattering looks like in practice - What “anti-mattering” feels like in schools - The emotional and behavioural consequences of quiet disengagement - Why belonging is an outcome of mattering – not the target itself We discuss how staff who feel unseen, unheard or replaceable may withdraw effort, reduce collaboration, and disengage in subtle but powerful ways. Conversely, when staff feel significant and influential, resilience, agency and motivation follow. The same applies to students. Part 2: Why behaviour reform so often stalls James explores a sobering question: What proportion of school improvement initiatives actually improve outcomes in a sustained way? We examine two core reasons change efforts frequently falter: - Teachers and leaders are rarely taught how to implement change effectively - Schools default to top-down, “black box” leadership models We unpack the risks of: - Compliance cultures - Groupthink - ‘Us and them' dynamics - Initiative fatigue And we introduce a more transparent alternative: the slice team – a representative cross-section of the school community that improves decision-making and strengthens buy-in. Root cause analysis: looking beneath the surface We then turn to a practical example. A widely cited statistic suggests that seven minutes out of every thirty are lost to low-level disruption. Rather than treating this as a behaviour problem alone, we demonstrate how to conduct a root cause analysis: - Identifying the trunk (the presenting issue) - Mapping the consequences - Investigating the roots across physical, emotional, relational, cognitive, behavioural and navigational domains The key insight: the same visible behaviour can arise from very different root systems. Behaviour reform without diagnosis is guesswork. Key ideas explored: - Mattering as a driver of culture - Anti-mattering and quiet withdrawal - Why belonging runs downstream of mattering - Black box vs glass box leadership - Slice teams as a mechanism for distributed ownership - Root cause analysis in school improvement - Why policy launch is not implementation - Habit change and “tight but loose” planning If behaviour is live in your context We are currently offering 20-minute Behaviour Strategy Calls for school leaders who would value a structured diagnostic conversation about behaviour, mattering and implementation. Today's story is a fan favorite that was previously published as Episode 269. On a spring night in 2009, a middle aged married couple was closing up the local pizza place they ran in a small Virginia mountain town. The husband walked to the back of the restaurant and grabbed a large bucket of ice. He carried the bucket out the back door, and dumped the ice into the grass. He stood up and felt the cool breeze on his face – it was a nice change from the hot pizza ovens he'd been working around all night. But then, he heard screaming coming from inside the restaurant. Without thinking, he dropped the bucket, and rushed back inside. But when he discovered what was happening, all he could do was turn around and run for his life.   You can WATCH all new & exclusive MrBallen podcast episodes on my YouTube channel, just called "MrBallen" - https://www.youtube.com/c/MrBallen If you want to reach out to me, contact me on Instagram, Twitter or any other major social media platform, my username on all of them is @mrballen Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. This week we talk about Momentary Lily! Jack poked fun at the “twist” about the main characters almost immediately, thanks to some weird-looking digital tears he noticed, while Rick didn't catch on until way later in episode seven. Both of us were annoyed by how the show forced emotional moments, killing off characters you barely knew and then spending way too much time trying to make you feel bad about it. Jack wasn't a fan of the action either, since the main girl is basically just a passenger on a sentient guitar that fights on its own. We also had a lot to say about the lack of common sense, like Rick's rant about the group freezing in the snow while holding a sword that emits heat! Jack tried to defend it as a high-stress mistake, but even he was fed up with the annoying catchphrases, and we both agreed it was ridiculous that a post-apocalyptic world still has working internet just for bikini videos.About the anime:Set in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by mechanical invaders known as Wild Hunts, Momentary Lily follows Renge Kasumi, a lonely amnesiac who has a unique power to fight back against these monstrosities. After wandering through a desolated city, she joins forces with five other girls, Yuri, Erika, Hinageshi, Sazanka, and Ayame each one wielding specialized weapons called Andvari to combat the mechanical threat. While the battles are central to their survival, the story tries to focus on the quiet, human moments of their daily lives, such as the bond-building experience of cooking meals from scavenged canned goods in the ruins. But then everything changes as we discover that they are actually alien-created copies rather than true humans.Next Week's Pick: “Failure frame ”Have you had the chance to watch Momentary Lily or any of our previous selections? Episode 20 of Matt Likes Beer finds Matt deep into Dry January 2026, reflecting on health goals, pre-recorded episodes, and the realities of balancing beer enthusiasm with personal wellness. The beer in the spotlight is Dollar Slice, a hazy IPA from Other Half Brewing in Brooklyn, New York—chosen initially for its pizza-inspired label and unexpected name. Matt shares his prior experience with Other Half, noting that while he's enjoyed their IPAs before, this particular beer was a classic case of label buying—a marketing reality many craft beer fans know well. A deeper look into the brewery's catalog reveals a diverse lineup beyond IPAs, including lagers, sours, and spontaneous fermentation beers, even though hop-forward styles clearly dominate their production. During the tasting, Matt addresses an important judging dilemma: while the can simply says “India Pale Ale,” further research—and the beer's unmistakable appearance—confirm it should be evaluated as a 21C Hazy IPA. Using BJCP guidelines, he breaks down the beer's opaque yellow appearance, exceptional head retention, intense citrus and tropical fruit aroma, and luxuriously soft, creamy mouthfeel. Flavor-wise, Dollar Slice delivers vibrant orange zest, pineapple, and juice-forward hop character from Citra and Galaxy hops, earning high marks across the board. A slight lingering off-flavor prevents a near-perfect score, but the beer still lands at an impressive 41 out of 50, firmly in the Excellent range. Matt emphasizes that without this minor issue—possibly isolated to the can or palate—this could easily have been a mid-40s standout. With no one-star reviews to read, the episode closes on a thoughtful soapbox moment about Untappd, consumer-driven beer trends, and the disconnect that can occur when breweries resist making the styles people actually want to drink. Matt balances critique with humility, acknowledging the complexity of running a brewery while reaffirming his belief that variety, responsiveness, and drinker feedback matter.

As European imperialism heated up in Africa in the late 1800's, King Leopold II of Belgium put into motion one of the most ambitious and villainous plans in all of European history - the theft of the entire Congo. Utilizing the work of explorer Henry Morton Stanley, European animus towards the Afro-Arab Slave Trade, the creation of dubious committees and associations, international lobbying of governments, public relations campaigns, and bogus treaties with the people of Congo, Leopold understood that "...we must be cautious, clever and quick to act. I would not expose myself to displeasing the English or letting escape a good opportunity to get some of this beautiful African cake." In 1885, the countries of Europe gave their blessing to Leopold's slice of cake at the Berlin Conference. This episode is Part 2 in a series on the Belgian Congo. It takes a look at how Leopold II of Belgium went from being a monarch of tiny Belgium to the owner of the biggest European colony in Africa. Upcoming episodes will discuss atrocities in the Congo, resistance and reform movements, and more.  -Consider Supporting the Podcast!- Leave a rating or review on apple podcasts or spotify!
