Another crazy week in Georgia politics means we have another crazy podcast. Topics include: Colton Moore is mostly politically dead as CD-14 voters rally around Clay Fuller. The race for the GOP gubernatorial nomination gets spicy. Jackson sues Jones for defamation. The latest polling in the Governor and Senate races. Esteves goes after Duncan. Scot tussles with Alex Johnson. The Catoosa GOP acts foolishly and gets smacked down again.

Today's episode of Out of Patients welcomes Dr Pamela Buchanan, an emergency room physician with over 20 years inside American medicine who refuses to sugarcoat what the job demands and what it destroys. She worked straight through COVID as protocols changed by the day and deaths arrived faster than anyone could process. She logged 80 to 100 hour weeks. She isolated from her family to avoid bringing the virus home. Over time, survival began to feel negotiable.Dr Buchanan speaks openly about burnout as emotional flatline and about physician suicide as a predictable outcome that leadership prefers to ignore. She describes the ER as the catch all for a broken system and explains why chronic care collapses there by design. She shares the reality of trying to access mental health care while still practicing medicine, calling dozens of therapists, getting nowhere, and spending $10,000 to $15,000 out of pocket just to stay alive and functional.Listeners will hear how neurodivergence shaped her career in emergency medicine, how race and trust intersect inside hospital walls, and why doctors are leaving in waves. This conversation carries clarity, anger, humor, and hard earned truth from someone who stayed long enough to name the damage.RELATED LINKSDr Pamela BuchananStrong MedicineDr Pamela Buchanan on LinkedInDr Pamela Buchanan on InstagramEmotional Flatline articleKevinMD essay by Dr Pamela BuchananFEEDBACKLike this episode? Am I the Jerk? is the show where you can confess your deepest darkest secrets and be part of the conversation.
This live episode was recorded at the Eudemonia event and features a respectful, on-stage conversation about America's chronic disease crisis and why health has become so politicized. The panel explores root causes from both an individual and population-health lens, including ultra processed foods, stress, and social determinants of health. They discuss how dietary guidelines and school food policies get shaped, why nuance matters, and what changes actually move the needle. The conversation also tackles SNAP, food insecurity, and the debate around restrictions versus incentives. Finally, they address how trust in science can be damaged when complex systems are reduced to soundbites. Around 80% of the world's dogs are free-roaming, living in streets, villages, and communities alongside people rather than inside homes. Yet much of what we believe about dog welfare, safety, and rescue comes from a Western model of dog ownership. In this episode, I'm joined by Vanessa of Spicy Dogs, a certified canine behaviour consultant based in Sri Lanka who helps adopters of village and street dogs understand behaviour through the lenses of ethology, trauma awareness, and co-regulation — building trust rather than control.Together we explore the complexity of street dog lives, the tensions that arise when Western rescue impulses meet different cultural realities, and the deeper question: what actually makes a good life for a dog?In this episode we discuss:• What daily life looks like for street and village dogs• Why the narrative of constant suffering can miss the richness of their lives• How language and labels shape the way we see “street dogs”• When rescue helps — and when it can unintentionally cause harm• What can change when dogs are removed from their cultural and ecological context• How different cultures understand dog welfare• What street dogs might teach us about living alongside dogs rather than controlling themThis is a thoughtful, sometimes uncomfortable conversation that invites us to loosen our grip on what we think dogs should be - and see them through a wider cultural and ecological lens.To connect with Vanessa:https://instagram.com/spicydogsbehaviourConnect with me!Website: https://mysticdogmama.comInstagram: https://instagram.com/mysticdogmamaCome join my free Facebook group, First Light. Is Cade Cunningham getting the respect he deserves… or is the hype machine in overdrive? This week on Alley Oop, Juju and Trysta welcome Zach Harper from The Athletic for a full-on NBA debate episode — and things get SPICY. We kick things off with the big question: Is Cade Cunningham an MVP candidate… or are we getting ahead of ourselves? Does he deserve praise for carrying Detroit — or shade for the results? From there, the besmirching spreads: Are the Spurs the second-best team in the West? Can ANYONE beat Team USA in Olympic basketball? Who are the true powerhouses — East vs West? Why won't Luka shoot when he's WIDE OPEN?! Kelsey Plum does an Aliyah Boston elbow impression and we cannot recover. It's debates, hot takes, chaos, and a LOT of shade. If you love NBA debates, spicy basketball takes, and zero chill analysis — you're in the right place. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Mary shares practical strategies for staying calm, kind, and firm, setting limits without breaking a child's spirit, and protecting parents and siblings from burnout. She also explores how parenting a Spicy One transforms the parent, why traditional approaches often backfire, and ways to focus on delighting in your child while cultivating connection and self-regulation. In this episode, you'll learn: How to recognize if your child is a Spicy One Why traditional parenting techniques often backfire Practical tools for managing meltdowns and aggression How to discipline without turning into the “mean mom” Ways to protect siblings and prevent parental burnout The importance of self-regulation and delighting in your child ABOUT HUNTER CLARKE-FIELDS: Hunter Clarke-Fields is the host Mindful Parenting Podcast (Top 0.5% podcast ), global speaker, number 1 bestselling author of “Raising Good Humans” and “Raising Good Humans Every Day,” Mindfulness Meditation teacher and creator of the Mindful Parenting Course and Teacher Training. Kevin and Michelle are feeling punchy after a long, dreary winter, and it shows. What starts as cold remedies (ginger, garlic, lemon, honey, and a serious kick of cayenne) turns into a fiery, flavour-packed conversation about one of Kevin's favourite appetizers: Bang Bang Cauliflower. In this episode, Kevin walks through his easy, three-step recipe for crispy, spicy cauliflower bites made with maple syrup, sambal oelek, and panko, perfect for the air fryer or oven. Michelle shares her own buffalo cauliflower variation using chickpea flour and a powerhouse spice blend inspired by Dr. Greger's approach to plant-based nutrition. But this isn't just about flavour. The duo dives into the science behind cruciferous (yes, Kevin's favourite word) vegetables. From sulforaphane and sulfur-rich compounds to cancer risk reduction, cardiometabolic protection, and hormone support, they break down why cauliflower, broccoli, kale, and other brassicas deserve a regular spot on your plate, even if you think you “hate” them. You'll also hear:Air fryer vs. oven experimentsHow to sneak more veggies into kids' diets (cauliflower sheep included)Why lightly steaming may maximize health benefitsA listener-submitted dad joke (and a few truly questionable ones)Spicy food, nutrition science, vegetable art, and way too much enthusiasm for the word “cruciferous.” Just another day at Nutrition for Noobs.Eat your greens. Is it really possible to have an “acidic vagina” from taking too many probiotics? Why are we often sold a “Barbie doll” version of what our anatomy “should” look like? And, how do you actually start exercising as a self-proclaimed “lazy girl”? In this episode, Claire and Dr Mariam speak to Dr Mandy Hagstrom, an accredited exercise scientist and Associate Professor at UNSW, to find out how to get the biggest bang for your buck when it comes to exercise. They discuss the “weekend warrior” approach, why women might need less exercise than men to see the same longevity benefits and they explore cardio vs weight training. They also talk about why your exercise timing doesn't actually matter, debunking the social media myth that fasted morning workouts are the magic pill for fat loss. Plus, in Med School, we dive into the world of "spicy" vaginas. We look at the viral claim of "acidic vagina" syndrome, whether you can actually overdose on probiotics and why your lady parts are essentially a self-cleaning oven that doesn't need micromanaging. And, in our Quick Consult, Dr Mariam answers Amelia’s question about whether it’s normal for her vulva to be wrinkly or discoloured. We strip away the expectations and celebrate the "50 shades of beige, pink and purple" that make up real, healthy anatomy. Hello Brave Friends! Welcome to today's expert episode, #244, featuring Mary Van Geffen, author of Parenting a Spicy One and parenting coach for families raising strong-willed, intense children. These expert episodes are conversations with professionals whose work directly supports caregiving parents. In this episode, hosts Susanna Peace Lovell and Jessica Patay sit down with Mary to explore what it really means to parent a child who feels like they “need more than you have to give.”Mary reframes the concept of the “spicy one”—a child who is strong-willed, emotionally intense, and often misunderstood—and challenges traditional parenting approaches that rely solely on discipline and control. Instead, she emphasizes compassion, emotional regulation, positive reinforcement, and what she calls “self-mothering” for parents. The conversation explores how self-care is essential—but not selfish—and how parents can protect themselves during aggressive outbursts while still leading with calm and clarity. They also discuss sibling dynamics, navigating public perception, and the emotional complexity that can arise when one child requires significantly more energy than others. Mary encourages parents to name challenges openly, normalize the struggle, and create supportive environments where both parents and children can grow. This episode offers practical tools, hopeful reframes, and the reminder that strong-willed children can grow into powerful advocates and leaders when met with steadiness and understanding.Find more information about Mary Van Geffen here.Find her book, Parenting a Spicy One, here.Find more information about Life Coach, Susanna Peace Lovell here.Find Susanna's book, Your True Self is Enough here.Find our first book from We Are Brave Together Brave Together Podcast is a resource produced by We Are Brave Together, a global nonprofit that creates community for moms raising children with disabilities, neurodivergence, or complex medical and mental health conditions. Grade 7 math teacher Gabriel Despatie (Ontario) shares what happened when he tried to “overlay” standards-based grading onto nine years of refined tests—and why he ultimately scrapped his assessments after realizing they were packed with filler that measured rounding, formatting, and test-taking more than the actual learning goals. Gabriel walks through the system that finally clicked: a weekly “Learning Carnival” where students work one standard at a time with three backwards-compatible performance levels (mild/medium/spicy), two questions per level, and unlimited retakes that count as mastery whenever they happen. The conversation dives into practical logistics (tracking sheets, retake flow, managing chaos), the surprising motivational impact of gamified mastery markers (smiley faces and fist pumps), and what changed when he temporarily hid percentage grades—only to see retakes drop as soon as the numbers returned. Along the way, Gabriel connects alternative grading to Building Thinking Classrooms, shares how Open Middle tasks improved assessment quality (without punishing reading comprehension), and reflects on why meaningful grading reform takes time, iteration, and community support.LinksPlease note - any books linked here are likely Amazon Associates links. Parenting a strong-willed child can feel intense, exhausting, and isolating, especially when your kid has big emotions, strong opinions, and a “justice-seeking” spirit that won't quit. In this episode of The Fresh Start Family Show, Wendy sits down with parenting coach and author Mary Van Geffen to talk about how to parent a “spicy one”, without losing your mind, your confidence, or their spark. You'll learn how to set firm and kind boundaries, why repair matters more than perfection, and how simple shifts in your tone of voice, pace, and posture can change everything when your child pushes back. Mary also shares powerful mindset shifts from her new book Parenting a Spicy One, including the idea that your child isn't your problem, they're your curriculum. If you're raising a strong-willed or “spicy” kid and you want more cooperation, less yelling, and a home that feels safer and more connected, this episode will feel like a deep exhale. ➡️ Head to https://www.freshstartfamilyonline.com/310 for more info and links.
