Send us a textWelcome back to DMRThe newest installment in the Predator franchise, Predator: Badlands, breaks new ground by placing a Predator, or Yautja, as its central protagonist. The story follows Dek, a young, outcast Yautja on a quest to prove his worth to his warrior clan by hunting the seemingly unkillable apex predator of the treacherous, alien world of Genna, often called "The Death Planet." His perilous journey leads to an unlikely alliance with an advanced Weyland-Yutani Corporation android named Thia, whose own mission on the hostile planet went sideways. Together, the mismatched pair must navigate the lethal environment, evade Weyland-Yutani forces, and confront a terrifying creature that challenges everything Dek has been taught about the honor of the hunt, making for a thrilling sci-fi survival adventure. The film is directed by Dan Trachtenberg, who also helmed the critically acclaimed Prey. The main cast features Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi as the Predator protagonist, Dek, and Elle Fanning in the dual role of the androids Thia and Tessa. As of the latest reports, Predator: Badlands has earned over $162 million at the global box office. Critics have embraced the fresh take, awarding it a Certified Fresh 86% on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences have given it an even higher score of 96%.Reminder to grab your 30 day free Audible trial, link in the show; you'll be helping support DMR
Can't wait for that Dek and Bud spin-off movie.
Director Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane, Prey) returns to the Universe of the the Predator with an interesting new take.....what if we embarked on a hunting adventure with the Predator itself as the main protagonist? Actually the Predators are officially know as "Yautja" species and this particular Yautja is the runt of his clan named Dek played by Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatan. After some unexpected family turmoil on his home planet, he is inadvertently whisked away to a very dangerous planet named Genna where he has decided to embark on his first hunt for a very rare creature. Along the way, he aligns with a synthetic human named Thia (Elle Fanning) whom is more of an expert on this paritcular creature. And much creature-on-creature violence ensues....though rated PG-13?Host: Geoff GershonEdited By Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon Send us a textSupport the showhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
The first “Predator” movie in 1987 with Arnold Schwarzenegger was a hit, and gave us all our fav Arnold impersonation line, “GET TO THE CHOPPA!” Now we get a new Predator movie, 38 years after that original, called “Predator Badlands.” Is it good enough to “GET TO THE THEATER?!!!” That remains to be seen. The Predator franchise was a Fox product, but now Disney owns Fox and Disney will put its fingerprints on any new Predator entry, including this one. “Predator Badlands” stars Elle Fanning as Thia, who is a synthetic or robot, who is found by Dek, the main predator, played by Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi. Dek is seen as the weakest by his predator clan, especially his father, and is ferociously driven to take down a big trophy and return with it to show he is a hunter, a killer worthy of the clan. He ends up on a planet to take down that trophy and Thia ends up helping him on his journey. Is it worth a trip to the theater to find out what happens? Check out this episode to find out! “Predator Badlands” also stars Reuben De Jong, Cameron Brown, Ross Duffer, Matt Duffer, Michael Homik, Stefan Grube and Rohinal Nayaran. INTRO:I'm Hank, longtime podcaster, filmmaker, and YouTuber, and this is my review of Disney's Predator: Badlands. This is a spoiler-filled review of the movie so you've been warned.BUDGET:Predator Badlands cost $105 million dollars to make. It would appear the 20th Century Studios (a Walt Disney Company) is going to make money. That hasn't been a very common occurrence lately in film.SETTINGS:I didn't like the scaled down look of Yautja Prime. From the lack of scale to the hazy look, I wasn't a fan at all. When I say scale I don't simply mean the size of the area. I like to see expansive worlds that are populated. There were parts of the planet Genna that felt expansive but it mostly felt like we were in front of a green screen for two hours. If your budget wasn't $105 million dollars I'd let it slide.CHARACTERS:Dek portrayed by Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi. The concept is universal so it works for the most part. I simply couldn't wrap my mind around all the emotional dynamics of a human family coming from Predators.Thia & Tessa portrayed by Elle Fanning. The first several minutes of Thia's appearance were like nails on a chalkboard! She was so annoying that I regretted going to the film. Over time, thankfully, that leveled off. That dynamic works in many different types of movies, just not a Predator movie. She was the comic relief that had a strange motivation that I didn't quite understand because they didn't give us any insight on how or why she was so connected to Tessa. The Tessa version was a one-note villain that doesn't hesitate to lie to Mu/TH/UR.Father is portrayed by Reuben de Jong.Kwei is portrayed by Michael Homik.Bud is the baby Grogu style ripoff. She's even referred to as a baby Kalisk. She's funny and extremely important to the story but the comedy distracts from what a typical Predator movie should be. HITS:The concept of going on an adventure to prove your worth is tried and true. The action sequences work well and are exhilarating in most instances. If they were going for a couples or family movie they hit the mark. I was about 20 minutes in when I said to myself, “oh, this is a couples/family movie.”The marketing appears to have worked as the first weekend was pretty solid.I like that they attempted to go in a different direction with the franchise even though it doesn't work for me.MISSES:This is a predator movie in name only. This is a human storyline portrayed by brand name that sells tickets. The overall look and lack of scale detract from the movie.I didn't sign up for this style of Predator movie. Subverting expectations can work when you stay in the confines of the source material (which they didn't).The father son conflict dynamic is pushed beyond belief. The brother references being saved by Dek but they don't show it.The hunt seems irrelevant to the story which is simply a revenge story. Especially once Dek knows he won't kill the kalisk. So why are we going on this adventure again? They borrowed from too many franchises and genres to list.MOVIE SCORE: 5/10DIRECTION: CWRITING: DCINEMATOGRAPHY: CPOST PRODUCTION (INCLUDES: SCORE, SFX, COLOR GRADE) : DREWATCHABILITY: D1 Awful content = Fails on every single level.2-4 Poor = Terrible on almost every front.5 Mediocre = Some of the content is...

Welcome back to The Lobby Bar! This week, we're flipping the script on two iconic action franchises and our featured cocktail!First, we talk about the sci-fi behemoth that just hit theaters, Predator: Badlands! Director Dan Trachtenberg once again reinvents the franchise, this time by making a young Predator outcast named Dek the hero. We discuss the epic, bloody hunt on a hostile alien world, his unexpected alliance with a Weyland-Yutani synthetic, and whether this Badlands story is a fresh direction for the Yautja mythology. Then, the running starts! We gear up for the highly anticipated Edgar Wright-directed remake of Stephen King's dystopian thriller, The Running Man (2025), starring Glen Powell as Ben Richards. With its release just days away, we look at the hype, the star-studded cast (Josh Brolin, Michael Cera, Colman Domingo), and how this new version is a more faithful adaptation of the dark, savage novel.Of course, no show is complete without a drink! We're mixing up a Reverse Martini (sometimes called an Upside-Down Martini). This sophisticated, lower-proof cocktail flips the classic ratio, making Dry Vermouth the star and the Gin the modifier. It's the perfect, contemplative sipper for a week of cinematic chaos! All that, plus a look at the latest Box Office News!Merch ShopPatreonInstagramBlueskyFacebookhttps://www.drinkthemovies.comYouTubeDiscord*Please Drink Responsibly*
A Kiwi is at the helm of the latest movie in an iconic franchise. The first Predator film was released in 1987, and four films —and two Alien vs Predator films— and 38 years later, Kiwi-born Dimitrius Koloamatangi holds a starring role in ‘Predator: Badlands'. Auditioning for the role of Dek was a bit of a funny process, Koloamatangi revealed to Mike Hosking. “My character is obviously an alien, so he doesn't really speak English,” “So I had to do a take in just like, a made-up language.” While the audition process had Koloamatangi integrating elements of Samoan and Tongan into his own language, for the actual film, he had to learn something entirely new. “When I jumped on, I had thought I could just freestyle and do my own thing, which I was like, ‘oh this is gonna be fantastic, no lines.'” “But then they were like, oh we're gonna set you up with the Zoom call with this guy named Britton who constructed the whole language,” Koloamatangi told Hosking. “I was like, bro, I have to learn a whole made up language? Like, I struggle Samoan somewhat fluently, now I have to learn this? But it was fun.” The Predator franchise is iconic, boasting a massive fanbase, including Koloamatangi's father. “My dad's a massive fan of the first one – we used to watch that one a lot growing up,” he said. “It's pretty surreal to be honest,” “The franchise has such a massive fan base, like you said, spans like 20 years, you know, and, yeah, it's kind of crazy to think that I'm now a part of it.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

CAN DAN TRACHTENBERG GO 3 FOR 3??? Predator: Badlands Movie Review – In this new chapter of the Predator saga, director Dan Trachtenberg (Prey, Predator: Killer of Killers, 10 Cloverfield Lane, The Boys) flips the script and takes us deep into the hunter's world - in BEAUTIFUL IMAX!! The film stars Elle Fanning (known for The Great, Maleficent, Super 8) as Thia — a damaged synthetic from the Weyland-Yutani Corporation. Joining her is Dimitrius Schuster‑Koloamatangi (making his major big-screen debut) as Dek, a young Predator outcast who must prove himself against impossible odds. The story unfolds on a remote alien planet where hunter becomes hunted, alliances form in the wild, and the ultimate apex Predator awaits. Predator: Badlands The Predator franchise has been long and incredibly varied in it's scope and quality. From the very first film which was, lets be fair, a macho man monster movie... to the ongoing saga that has been explored in Comics, Games, Movies and animation. The character of the Predator has crossed over with a massive range of other IP's from Batman and Judge Dredd to Archie (?!) and even the ENTIRE MARVEL UNIVERSE... But thus far we've never seen them as anything other than an antagonist. Well all that is about to change in Predator Badlands! Young Yautja hunter Dek is ready to take on the most deadly planet in the galaxy to prove himself to his family. He is going to need to learn a lot about working together with others to survive. Dion, Jill and Quinny are the Predators in this review, and they are hunting down a great film! Synopsis: Cast out from its clan, an alien hunter and an unlikely ally embark on a treacherous journey in search of the ultimate adversary. https://youtu.be/qucmg5g0zds A huge thank you to all the Predators and Prey who listen to each episode of the show while they hunt their next target... Dan Trachtenberg has emerged as the guy flying the ship the last few years for the Predator franchise, after knocking it out of the park earlier this year with Killer of Killers, can Trachtenberg chart an even better course with the first theatrical adventure in 7 years? | Predator Badlands | A young, outcast Predator named Dek who, to prove his worth to his clan, travels to a dangerous planet to hunt a legendary creature. Along the way, he teams up with an unlikely ally, a synthetic humanoid named Thia (played by Elle Fanning), and together they navigate a treacherous world and confront their own personal family dramas.
Welcome back to The Lobby Bar! This week, the box office is buzzing with two colossal new releases, and we're mixing up a big batch of the aptly named Pink Punch to celebrate!First up, we dive into the latest sci-fi thriller from director Yorgos Lanthimos, Bugonia! Emma Stone stars as a high-powered CEO kidnapped by two conspiracy theorists convinced she's an alien. We unpack the dark comedy, the mind-bending plot twists, and ask the unsettling question: are the conspiracy theorists right? Then, the iconic hunter franchise is reinvented with Predator: Badlands! This installment shakes up the canon by centering on a Predator, Dek, who is exiled from his clan and forced to hunt a massive adversary on a treacherous alien world. We discuss the future setting, the heroic Yautja protagonist, and whether this new direction lives up to the Predator name. All that, plus the latest Box Office News, a breakdown of the new wide releases, and how to make a perfect pitcher of our refreshing (and deceptively strong) Pink Punch!Merch ShopPatreonInstagramBlueskyFacebookhttps://www.drinkthemovies.comYouTubeDiscord*Please Drink Responsibly*
