Episode 15 – Show Notes We enthusiastically mention the Unbelievable Discussion Group in London fairly often (see link at bottom of the notes). This episode we chat over the first 3 of 2019, which have each been corkers. January - Cambridge scientist & Christian Denis Alexander and his well known work on theistic evolution, such as the book “Creation or Evolution: Do We Have to Choose?” (the answer is ‘no’). We see if his theological work convinces us as much as we respect his science. February – A friendly Abortion Debate between our Frances and Christian Bruce Blackshaw who is doing a PhD on the Ethics of Abortion at Birmingham University. How did they do? Listen out for that famous pianist and how humans uniquely have ‘rational substance’. March - James Crossley on Mark’s Gospel. James is an Unbelievable regular, an agnostic and nowadays from St Mary’s University in London. He wrote on Mark (most famously on its dating) and now has developed his thinking somewhat. The talk and Q&A is available here, but sorry, it is poor qualityhttps://www.dropbox.com/s/oe5iu0cgv4mah52/20190304-193514.m4a?dl=0 Is That in The Bible?Enjoy Leviticus 27 v1-7, we also mention Exodus 21 v22-25. Ed was shocked. Doubts Aloud Links: Please leave us a review on iTunes and we will respond to any question asked there with the review. Edgar Andrews is Emeritus Professor of Materials at the University of London and the author of "Who Made God?" He returns to support the view that only God explains the ability of science to make sense of the world around us. Lewis Wolpert is Emeritus Professor of Biology at University College London, he is an atheist and Vice President of the British Humanist Association. He argues tht belief in God is purely a result of evolution. They debate what constitutes "evidence" for God, and whether science is the only admissible type of evidence. Richard Dawkins has said that "the theory of evolution made it possible to be an intellecually fulfilled atheist". But what if belief in evolution becomes irrational on atheist naturalism? Alvin Plantinga is one of the foremost Christian philosophers in the world and is leading a resurgence of Christian philosophy in North America. He has formulated the "Evolutionary Argument Against Naturalism" which proposes that if evolution is true then it provides a defeater for rational belief on a naturalistic framework. Can we trust our beliefs to be true if they have been produced by minds that are themselves the products of unguided evolution - a process that is geared towards producing beliefs for survival, not necessarily for truth?? He explains the force of the argument and debates its implications with Stephen Law, atheist and Senior lecturer in philosophy at Heythrop college, University of London. Stephen is also Provost of the Centre for Inquiry UK. Plantinga also states where he stands on Intelligent Design, the problem of evil and a few other things besides.
