The Japanese philosopher Yujin Nagasawa says the majority of people are what he calls ‘existential optimists'. What does this mean for ideas about evil and the creation of life? Jack Symes' essay takes us through the views of thinkers including Schopenhauer, Stephen Law and Camus. Jack Symes is a New Generation Thinker on the scheme run by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the BBC to put academic research on radio. He is based at Durham University. His books include Philosophers on Consciousness: Talking about the Mind and Talking about Existence and Defeating the Evil-God Challenge and he is working on a book about morality. Producer: Luke Mulhall
A couple of weeks ago, Jack took part in a debate at Oriel College, University of Oxford, with Stephen Law on the evil-god challenge. It was a fantastic discussion, full of thought-provoking arguments and brilliant questions from the audience. It was also set to be our final episode on the topic. Unfortunately, due to Oxford's unforeseen technical issues, the audio from the debate couldn't be used. This left us in a bit of a pickle. After nearly nine years of The Panpsycast, we've never missed a scheduled release, and we weren't about to start now. So, instead of the debate, Jack and Olly for a wide-ranging one-to-one conversation on all things philosophy. We took the opportunity to dive into over three years' worth of audience questions that we hadn't yet had the chance to answer…until now. As always, thank you for your support. We hope you enjoy the show!

From January 2015: The term 'Humanism' is often seen as synonymous with atheism. But a Theos report titled: 'The case for Christian Humanism: why Christians should be Humanists and Humanists should be Christians' claimed to show that atheism is ill-equipped to support the fundamental tenets of Humanism. Report author Angus Ritchie debated with atheist philosopher Stephen Law on whether atheistic humanism can account for the human dignity, morality and reason it espouses. Originally intended for children, this book provides interesting philosophical conversations for adults as well. I discuss one chapter of this book in today's podcast.

https://youtu.be/gJZeRsnd7cY The “Evil God Argument” is an attempt to demonstrate that all the arguments used to explain away evil or why evil exists while maintaining a belief in the existence of a good God can also be applied in reverse to an evil God. If then we can easily dismiss the evil God arguments by what seemingly seems to be true about the world then similarly we should also dismiss a good God also. This argument has been popularised by Stephen Law as well as atheist YouTubers like CosmicSkeptic (Alex O'Connor) amongst others. In this stream we look at whether there is any justification to favour the belief in the existence over a good God rather than an evil one.

Stephen Law is formerly reader and head of department in philosophy at Heythrop College University of London. He holds BPhil and DPhil degrees in philosophy from the University of Oxford where he was also a junior research fellow for three years. He has researched and published in metaphysics, epistemology, mind, philosophy of religion, and later Wittgenstein. His popular books include A Very Short Introduction to Humanism, The Philosophy Gym, and (for 12-adult) The Complete Philosophy Files. Stephen will be talking about science, scientism, the role of philosophy and religion, and what we can establish, if anything, from the comfort of our armchairs.
This Theist/Atheist Discussion features a number of guests, most notably Tyler McNabb and Stephen Law (who recently had an exchange on Unbelievable? on the subject of Reformed Epistemology). The other guests joining are: Cameron Bertuzzi (myself), Josh Parikh, Perry Hendricks, Brett Lunn, Ben Watkins, Ben Bavar. The topic of discussion is Alvin Plantinga's (in)famous Evolutionary Argument Against Naturalism. The argument roughly states that the probability our cognitive faculties are reliable given Naturalism & Evolution is low. Hence, the person that believes N&E has a defeater for all of their beliefs, including belief in N&E. Belief in N&E is therefore self-referentially incoherent and cannot rationally be accepted.
