Starting as a quality engineer on the shop floor she's since worked in manufacturing, supplier quality, purchasing, programme management, and new vehicle launch. One of her earliest roles was as a process engineer for V8 Jaguar engines, and her current role is head of supplier quality for electric vehicle propulsion, so her career spans the industrial revolution from combustion engines to electrification.Along the way against this technical backdrop she's led business transformation, driven culture change, inclusion, talent development, and immersed herself in coaching – gaining a coaching qualification and putting this into practise to shape her leadership style. In our conversation we talk about Marianne's childhood in Torbay, on the English Riviera and how she excelled in maths and physics at school, leading to a mechanical engineering degree at Birmingham University. Her career began at Rover Group, where she faced challenges as a woman in a male-dominated environment. She later moved to Ford Bridgend and then Jaguar Land Rover, where she held various roles, including supplier technical assistance and program management. Despite setbacks, such as a difficult line manager and pneumonia, she rebuilt her confidence through coaching and leadership programs. Her journey emphasizes resilience, learning from experiences, and the importance of self-belief. In Touch assesses the findings of a report that looks at the ways special educational needs care is being delivered to the children who need it. The report gives little to no mention of the challenges of specific groups of pupils and so, with the help of Rachael Hewett of the Vision Impairment Centre for Teaching and Research at Birmingham University and the Thomas Pocklington Trust's Tara Chattaway, we review the implications of a system in crisis for visually impaired pupils. When it is your time of the month and you're visually impaired, it can be tricky to know when your period has arrived. In Touch looks at an upcoming device that is aiming to provide women with information about their menstrual cycle in an accessible way. The device and corresponding app, is called FlowSense. Muna Daud is the founder and CEO and she provides information on how the device works. Leanne Best and Tassia Leefe, both describe the unique challenges they have with their periods as visually impaired women. FlowSense are looking for more women to test out their prototypes. If you are interested, you can contact Muna Daud via email: Muna@flowsense.co. Carole Boyd has been in the Archers since the mid 80's. Following her training at the City of Birmingham University she then won BBC's Carlton Hobbs award which involved a 6 month contract with BBC Radio Drama Company. But she started acting age 3, when, whilst being bored in long cinema queues, she used to sing and dance to entertain the other queue members. Carole voices all the female voices on ‘Postman Pat', fell in love with Laurence Olivier in her early teens, and looked after her husband for twenty years after he had a stroke which removed half his brain. Though remarkably Patrick retained his speech and sense of humour. Carole talks about techniques to manipulate your voice and use it to be as expressive as your face. Bunny first met Carole when they were on the same team for University Challenge, and she describes her favourite colourful plants which she likens to ‘NewBerry Fruit Jewels' a jelly type of sweet. #thearchers #bunnyguinnesspodcast

Among all the talk about ‘knowledge economy' it is easy to forget that universal schooling is a relatively new phenomenon. Mandated first in a few European countries in the 18th century, it did not reach many others until the 20th. And the idea that women have an equal right to be educated frequently encountered stiff opposition, often from the privileged who feared that knowledgeable females would upset the social status quo.Just about everywhere, the right to women's education was hard won: for instance Bal Gangadhar Tilak, one of the influential leaders of Indian independence movement, campaigned vociferously for decades against sending girls to school, complaining that it would lead to increased competition for jobs and to women neglecting their ‘domestic duties'. Mary Carpenter, the acclaimed Victorian education reformer, maintained that neatness and needlework, rather than a full academic curriculum, were ‘essential to a woman'.Fast forward to 2024 and even though the gap between male and female educational attainment has narrowed world-wide, there are still many places where women lag behind, even in something as basic as literacy. According to UNESCO, women today account for almost two-thirds of all adults unable to read. So how did we get here? And how can we close this gap? Iszi Lawrence follows the story of women's education with Jane Martin, Professor of Social History of Education at Birmingham University; Parimala V. Rao, Professor of the History of Education at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi; Dr. Karen Teoh, Associate of the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies at Harvard and World Service listeners.(Photo: Teenage girls and boys learning in classroom. You've got these elderly gentlemen running who, Trump, I think is four years younger than Biden. And so it's not like a dynamic choice that reflects the wider population.""It's going to be absolutely fascinating, I think, come the autumn. And then, of course, do we have a repeat of 2020 where one of the candidates doesn't accept the result if it's a close election?""I think the Republican party is going to, it's become the party of Trump. Perdendosi: an instruction, typically at the end of a piece, for musicians to gradually diminish in volume, tempo and tone, to the point of disappearance. Photographer Norman McBeath uses the term to describe the way his images of fallen leaves portray how they lose colour and volume, turning from living things into something like parchment. During lockdown, McBeath's images were a constant companion to artist and writer Edmund de Waal, who responds to them here with a series of texts evoking change, decay and transformation, a unique collaboration beautifully documented in a new book from Hazel Press.McBeath and de Waal are in conversation with Alexandra Harris, Professor of English at Birmingham University and author of Weatherland and Romantic Moderns.
