Evolutionary biologist Richard Lenski hopes to demonstrate Darwinian evolution in action. But one humble scientist from Northern Idaho says not so fast! On this classic episode of ID The Future from the archive, host Eric Anderson concludes a conversation with microbiologist Dr. Scott Minnich. In Part 2, Dr. Minnich critiques Lenski's famous Long Term Evolutionary Experiments. Through experiments of his own, Minnich has shown how the practical results of Lenski's project on E. coli are easily repeatable under different conditions, and how some key changes to E. coli are even reversible, both of which speak more to an organism's pre-existing capabilities than to a Darwinian explanation. "Overall, [Lenski's] E. coli haven't generated anything new," observes Minnich. "They're getting rid of stuff they don't need...they have hyper mutational rates...but in the long run, that's not an advantage, because you're just going to acquire too many mutations, and that's the road to extinction." Young people supported Massie; old people did not. The Department of Fish & Wildlife has declared the widely used herbicide atrazine no big deal—but it very much is, beginning with the well-established fact that it turns the frogs…not gay, but aggressive and dysfunctionally hermaphroditic. In Georgia, eminent domain is being invoked to “liberate” people from their houses. Our moon is moving away from the earth at the rate of four centimeters per year. That might not seem like much. But that rate of movement away from the earth presents problems for those who believe the earth and moon have been around for 4.5 billion years.At the rate the moon is receding, it would have been so close to earth only 1.5 to 2 billion years ago that tidal friction would have melted earth's surface rocks. Mathematical fiddlings help a little, but not enough. By mathematically increasing the rate of earth's spin over supposed "billions" of years, and figuring in a factor for assumed different tidal rates, one can inch the earth moon relationship back to about 4 billion years.Evolutionary scientists believe the problem can be solved to keep their 4.5 billion years of evolutionary history intact. But, they admit that the assumptions being tried need investigation, since the matter is far from solved. In other words, evolutionists admit they have a problem making the earth moon relationship fit into their long age history.The mathematical models rule out the theory that the moon was formed billions of years ago from the same dust cloud that supposedly formed the earth. Also ruled out is the theory that the moon was captured by the earth's gravity. Two rocks float through silent space, unaware that they will soon cause a scientific debate millions of miles away on earth. On earth these two small asteroids added together may weigh only a few hundred pounds. The conclusions that can be drawn from them, however, might be weighty enough to overthrow a powerful theory.That summarizes the status of a scientific debate over patterns in which meteorites fall. Evolutionary theory says that when those two asteroids smash together in space, the resulting chunks will separate during the millions of years before they ever strike earth. As a result, meteor falls cannot possibly follow a pattern. However, a pattern has now been discovered.Researchers from Purdue University and the State University of New York say they have discovered that 17 meteorites that struck the earth in May between 1855 and 1895 form a broad line that extends for several thousand kilometers. Because the earth revolves, however, the line is mathematical rather than geographical. The meteorites are classified as H chondrites. When scientists analyzed 13 of the stones, they found that each had similar amounts of rare trace elements not found in 45 other H chondrite meteorites. The other meteorites did not fall into the geographic line researchers had discovered.The findings strongly suggest that these stones had not been drifting through space long enough to separate before they hit the earth. If the solar system is billions of years old, there is virtually no chance of the stones remaining together. And that at that time both the Moon & Sun were conjoined in Aries with wounded healer Chiron & dwarf planet of chaos, strife, & discord, Eris.This told us that our monthly mission was to plant seeds that lead to healing our wounded Aries energy. This podcast touches on how a wounded Mars-ruled Aries shadow is that it looks a lot like Libra archetypal energy: Indecisive &/or passive aggressive.This has clearly played out in American politics given the fact that by the first quarter lunar square of the Leo Moon to the Taurus Sun on April 23--just after the Venus/Uranus conjunction at 29'59” Taurus—Congress was still in limbo concerning funding the Department of Homeland Security (DHS.)No surprise then, that as we approached this Scorpio Full Moon, the House finally let go of its stubborn resistance & passed the Senate's March version of this funding bill—which excludes funding ICE & CBP—on April 30. It was the stubbornness of both sides of the aisle that left TSA, FEMA, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Secret Service, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) unfunded for 76 days since February 14. Perhaps it's no coincidence that Saturn had reentered Mars-ruled Aries February 13, indicating the kind of “banging one's head against the wall” frustration felt by both Congressional Democrats & Republicans since. Now the GOP majority-ruled Congress still has to take up a separate reconciliation bill to pass any funding for ICE & CBP, which Democrats vehemently oppose without some major changes to those agencies. This is one example of the Scorpio Full Moon's waxing influence on moving the nation out of limbo and into some kind of motivated action--the wound highlighted at the Aries New Moon conjunct Chiron & Eris. However, we've still got a long way to go when it comes to the U.S./Israeli waged war on Iran, as Congress continues to waffle on passing the War Powers Resolution Act codifying President Trump's ability to wage war without Congressional consent. This Act, passed in 1973 as a direct result of then President Richard Nixon's U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War without congressional approval—& despite many Americans' opposition—illustrates the resistance of this Administration to adhering to both past law & the will of the people.SUPREME COURT GUTS VOTING RIGHTS ACT, RETURNING US TO VALUES OF THE PAST But first, America has an even bigger internal problem that's related to its elections. On April 29, the Supreme Court took a step backward leaving us stuck in values of the past (Taurus Sun) that have already been proven not only unfair but that also position the U.S. even more firmly against the natural evolutionary process (Scorpio Moon.)And the latter is exactly what this Scorpio Full Moon is trying to tell us: That resisting change—by returning us to the values of the past such as the days of Jim Crow—is directly anathema to adapting to society's more evolved values now.The negative side of Taurus doesn't like change because it values its creature comforts. This archetype sees no benefit in changing its current way of life—where the American population is majority white—to accept adapting to the evolutionary trajectory it's on now given the more recent changes in population statistics.This podcast explores how the U.S. Census Bureau—between 2010 & now—has changed its definition of “white” & thus relegated a shift in categorizing more of the Hispanic & Latino population as “non-white.”A large part of what this Scorpio Full Moon is trying to tell us here—given that the Supreme Court has now struck down any state electoral maps that insure that black & minority majority districts have fair representation—is that this impedes U.S. adaptation to Pluto-ruled Scorpio's desire for change.PLUTO'S STATION RETROGRADE MAY 6 DREDGES UP ESSENTIAL TRUTHS THAT PRESERVE THE INTEGRITY OF THE SOULPluto's retrograde station occurs at 5'31” Aquarius on May 6 when the god of the underworld will plumb the depths of our subconscious from then until he's once again direct at 3'04” Aquarius on October 15.Pluto transits make it impossible not to be honest, as Jungian astrologer Erin Sullivan explains in her book “Planetary Retrogrades, Traversing the Inner Landscape.” It's there she notes that “Plutonian veracity has little to do with day-to-day honesty, but deals only with essential truth, life & death matters, the kind of truth that preserves the integrity of the soul. “It is part of the contract with Pluto, it seems” Sullivan continues, “that if one faces oneself willingly & unflinchingly, the reward is an unshakable integrity.“When Pluto undergoes its retrograde cycles”—particularly if it repeats its contact with a natal planet or angle—“it dredges deeper & deeper into the resources of the unconscious, bringing to light the most secluded aspects of one's inner nature. “The process of loosening firmly entrenched & potentially annihilating characteristics in the depth of the psyche is active primarily during the retrograde period,” says Sullivan. This thus returned us to the misogyny of the original Constitution's “all men”—but not all women—are created equal, in clear disregard for society's gladly accepted changed values since.Meanwhile, Pluto's shorter retrograde in Aquarius now until October asks us to explore the deeper more unconscious nature of topics like prejudice in this country—including racism against anyone who's not white, male, or Christian, at least the way things are going now…Together, they ask us to awaken to the sad truth that the U.S.—rather than evolving in a forward thinking, all inclusive, progressively humanitarian direction--prefers to keep in power those wedded to America's racist, misogynist, & gender discriminatory past. We're already seeing glimmers of the answer to questions like: “How's that been workin' for you so far?” through the current policies of an Administration that takes us to war for inexplicable reasons & that ignores its negative impact on the daily decline in health & well-being of its own citizens.Resistance to this may well awaken another Uranus in Gemini historical association, which is to that of war. Evolutionary psychology has taken this a stage further - seeing violence, social hierarchy, and sexual promiscuity as a product of evolutionary drives. But might this be a misleading and dangerous approach? Murder rates have fallen seventy-fold since the Middle Ages, and across the globe birth rates are a fraction of what they were a hundred years ago. Fathers are actively involved in child care and we've radically changed our outlook on social issues like gender identity - suggesting ideas and culture drive behaviour rather than evolution.Should we conclude that evolutionary psychology is a blind alley with no predictive power? Are we capable of overcoming behavioural traits and therefore wholly responsible for our actions? The monarch caterpillar feeds on milkweed. Milkweed manufactures a powerful toxin that can, in most cases, stop the heart of any creature who eats enough of it. The monarch caterpillar itself is unharmed by this poison. In fact, the caterpillar stores the poison in its body, and this poison remains even after the caterpillar has turned into a butterfly.Evolutionary scientists thought that the viceroy evolved to mimic or look like the monarch to fool birds into thinking that it, too, was toxic. The evolutionary story was that viceroys must really be good to eat, since they evolved from the tasty admiral butterflies. This evolutionary thinking remained untested until a few years ago, basically because scientists often consider it improper to question evolutionary claims. But, the tests using the wingless bodies of six different kinds of butterflies, including viceroys, proved that viceroys are indeed toxic to birds. Birds avoid the viceroy because it manufactures its own toxins. In fact, research has shown that the viceroy is, on average, even more poisonous than the monarch!Evolution is bad science. Scientists have known for some time that hummingbirds prefer bright-colored flowers. On the other hand, all of us know that white is most easily seen at night. That means that moths that pollinate flowers will more easily find white flowers. The question is, what is a flower to do when it is pollinated by hummingbirds during part of its flowering season and by night-flying moths later in its flowering season?That's the problem faced by a flowering plant called the gilia. Hummingbirds arrive to pollinate the flowers in mid-July. However, they leave in late August as the weather cools. Also in late August, the night-flying hawk moth arrives to begin pollinating the flower. This arrangement continues until late September. To attract both hummingbirds and moths during its long flowering season, the gilia provides bright red flowers, favored by the hummingbirds, until late August. Then it offers white flowers to attract the hawk moths.Evolutionary scientists call this an example of evolutionary strategy. Think about that for a moment. How would a flower know what color it is? How would it know which colors are preferred by hummingbirds and which are preferred by moths? A flower could no more decide to change its color than you or I can decide to grow an inch taller.Both logic and science say that the gilia's special features are intelligently designed by a truly gifted engineer. Dr. Lawrence Uricchio is Assistant Professor and the Youniss Family Professor of Innovation in the Department of Biology at Tufts University. Research in Lawrence's lab focuses on modeling how evolutionary and ecological processes work. They use a combination of experimental and observational approaches to generate data, and then they develop mathematical models to explain the observations they make in nature. Outside of work, Lawrence is a devoted family man who loves spending time with his nine-year-old son, often shuttling him between soccer practices and games. He also enjoys being outdoors and running, a passion that has stayed with him since his days as a middle-distance runner in high school and college. He completed his bachelor's degree in physics at Carleton College, received master's degrees in biophysical sciences and computer science from the University of Chicago, and was awarded his PhD in bioinformatics from the University of California, San Francisco. While at UCSF, he was named a Discovery Fellow. Afterwards, Lawrence conducted postdoctoral research at Stanford University under a Center for Computational, Evolutionary and Human Genomics (CEHG) Fellowship and an NIH Institutional Research and Academic Career Development Award (IRACDA). He also conducted postdoctoral research at the University of California, Berkeley before joining the faculty at Tufts in 2021. In this interview, Lawrence shares more about his life and science.
