What does it mean to be a wild animal in a world dominated by humans? A recent study found that city-dwelling raccoons' snouts are getting shorter—a sign of domestication. A benchmark scientific review paper from 2000, which established the safety of glyphosate for humans, has been retracted by the publisher, on the basis that a) the paper did not actually review the available evidence, b) the stated authors did not actually write (much of) the paper, and c) employees of Monsanto, which makes Roundup, cryptically contributed substantively to the paper. This paper never should have been published, and its retraction should prompt the EPA to revamp guidelines for the use of glyphosate. Also: peer review and scientific culture are widely gamed. What impact did the food early humans ate have on the teeth we have today? The carbohydrates (grains) available at the time required a lot of chewing, which means these early humans recognized this as a high-energy food source, despite not having teeth to properly chew them. The study shows it actually took about 700,000 more years before the size and shape of human teeth were actually suited to eating this food. Cool, right? Erin, with her background in science, helps tell the story of this research by explaining evolution.
