Rethinking Feminism and Gender Through Evolutionary Science with Marc Defant

In this week’s episode, Jennifer welcomes Professor Marc Defant from the University of South Florida. Marc is a renowned geology and geochemistry professor specializing in the study of volcanoes, the geochemistry of volcanic rocks, and mantle processes. With decades of experience researching volcanoes worldwide—including Russia—Marc has recently explored the intersection of evolutionary psychology and feminist studies. He is the author of the peer-reviewed paper, "Evolutionary Psychology and the Crisis of Empirical Rigor," which challenges mainstream academic views on social construction, feminism, and scientific rigor in sociocultural discourse. Jennifer and Marc dig into the controversial relationship between evolutionary psychology and modern feminist theories. Marc shares his perspective on how biological evolution shaped human social structures, including the origins of patriarchy, mate selection criteria, and gender dynamics both in ancestral and contemporary societies. They discuss the clash between scientific rigor and politically motivated ideologies within academic feminist studies, particularly around issues like social construction, beauty, health, and fat studies. The episode also explores societal trends like the impact of "safe at any size" movements, generational shifts in health and education, and Marc’s critique of wokeism and its ties to gender representation in professional fields. This conversation is packed with candid observations, scientific reasoning, and reflections on how political culture often overshadows empirical evidence in academia. "One thing a lot of women don't realize is back in a hunter gather society, you were either breastfeeding a baby, lactating, or having another child. They stayed pregnant until they couldn't have children anymore. So that's created a society that we have today where men are in leadership roles." ~Marc Defant This week on Political Contessa: The evolutionary psychology behind patriarchy and gender-based social roles Issues of empirical rigor in feminist studies and social construction theory How societal expectations about beauty and health intersect with biology Discussion of “safe at any size” and health implications for younger generations Contrast between male and female approaches to competition and leadership The impact of generational upbringing, career shifts, and family structures on women’s choices Wokeism, gender dominance in professional fields, and freedom of speech Insights on mate selection and resource investment across cultures Connect with Marc Defant: Website: https://www.marcdefant.com University of South Florida Faculty Profile: https://usf.academia.edu/MarcDefant ResearchGate: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Marc-Defant Peer-reviewed paper: "Evolutionary Psychology and the Crisis of Empirical Rigor" (contact Marc for access) Resources Mentioned: Robert Wright’s "The Moral Animal" Helen Andrews’ essay “The Great Feminization” for Compact Magazine Corey Clark’s research on polling and gender differences in views on free speech Awaken Your Inner Political Contessa Thanks for tuning into this week’s episode of Political Contessa. On this, our 310th Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss Trump, his presidency, and the state of the country. Disappointments include military interventions and renamings, a failed and politicized DOGE, and the embrace of tech-utopianism and associated heuristics and algorithms. Positive moves have been made in MAHA (e.g. revision of the childhood vaccine schedule, food additives and food pyramid), sex and gender (sex is real, men can't become women); and, to some degree, constitutional and border protections. We don't yet know what might be gained by interventions in Iran, and in Venezuela. Two years ago, The Atlantic published an issue predicting what would happen if Trump won a second term; they get a few things right, a lot wrong, and blame Trump for their own personal neuroses. Finally, a review of why we voted for Trump in the last election, where we were right, and where we were wrong.*****Our sponsors:Xlear: Xylitol nasal spray that acts as prophylaxis against respiratory illnesses by reducing the stickiness of bacteria and viruses. Send us a textA rising sea, a rising question: can we trust the plain words of Genesis when everything around us urges a softer read? We open Genesis 7:17–23 and trace the language, the logic, and the stakes of a global Flood, exploring how God's justice, patience, and mercy meet in one world-shaping event. Along the way, we talk through the Hebrew term mabbul, the repeated claims that “all the high mountains” were covered, and the eyewitness feel of the account that describes waters prevailing, increasing, and overwhelming. We also examine the cultural pressure points. Evolutionary uniformitarianism frames earth history as slow and steady; Genesis presents rupture and re-creation through a catastrophic deluge. Drawing on Henry Morris's arguments, we consider what a universal Flood would mean for interpreting the fossil record, and why the credibility of Scripture in one major event can affect confidence in other core claims, including the resurrection. This isn't about winning an argument; it's about forming the courage to read what the text actually says and let it reshape us.Most importantly, we connect the scope of judgment to the scope of mercy. The text insists that everything with the breath of life perished outside the ark, while Noah and those with him were preserved by God's provision. That pattern—warning, refusal, judgment, rescue—invites us to trust the Word as inerrant and reliable and to hide it in our hearts. If you've wrestled with the Flood's historicity, or with the tension between Scripture and cultural consensus, this conversation offers clarity, conviction, and hope. If it challenged you or helped you see Genesis with fresh eyes, share it with a friend, subscribe for future studies, and leave a review so others can find the show.Support the showhttps://www.jacksonfamilyministry.comhttps://bobslone.com/home/podcast-production/

A benchmark scientific review paper from 2000, which established the safety of glyphosate for humans, has been retracted by the publisher, on the basis that a) the paper did not actually review the available evidence, b) the stated authors did not actually write (much of) the paper, and c) employees of Monsanto, which makes Roundup, cryptically contributed substantively to the paper. This paper never should have been published, and its retraction should prompt the EPA to revamp guidelines for the use of glyphosate. Also: peer review and scientific culture are widely gamed. And: punitive damages to injured plaintiffs, awarded by juries against corporations, are being reduced by appellate courts due to a misapplication of the 14th Amendment.*****Our sponsors:Xlear: Xylitol nasal spray that acts as prophylaxis against respiratory illnesses by reducing the stickiness of bacteria and viruses. On this, our 307th Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss short form video (SFV), advertisers coming for our dreams, and a review of where we are, and where we are headed. Short form video has negative impacts on both cognitive capacity and mental health in youth and adults; in the context of recent research, we discuss laugh track, philosophy of science, and how tiny actions that appear to have no harm can be very harmful in the aggregate. Then: humans have a long history of accessing our hypnogogic states—between waking and sleep—for creative or spiritual purposes. Now, most companies surveyed are looking into “targeted dream incubation” as a way to change consumer behavior, including Burger King with their 2018 green-bunned “Nightmare King” burger. How do we resist? Finally: an intercalary period is when the absence of an even number of days in the year catches up with our calendars, and we add things like leap days. The mismatch between the solstice, Christmas, and new year's may point to this reality, and we seem to be living in a metaphorical one. We can't predict what comes next; the political landscape is in chaotic motion; Silver's rise in price may set off market collapse—so what can you do? Spend time in person with real people; develop real relationship; and become comfortable in solitude. Send us a textGet ready to nerd out with your favourite podcast hosts in this Food for Thought episode! Erin explores a study showing that early humans were eating carbs before their teeth were able to chew them. What impact did the food early humans ate have on the teeth we have today? The carbohydrates (grains) available at the time required a lot of chewing, which means these early humans recognized this as a high-energy food source, despite not having teeth to properly chew them. The study shows it actually took about 700,000 more years before the size and shape of human teeth were actually suited to eating this food. Cool, right? Erin, with her background in science, helps tell the story of this research by explaining evolution. Then she goes down a bit of a rabbit hole about wisdom teeth and changes we see in present day humans and our teeth and jaws today. Learn more in the studies Erin has referenced in this episode: How Human Diet Influenced Evolutionary Changes in our TeethWhy we Have so Many Problems with our Wisdom TeethWisdom Teeth and Genetics: Why Some People do not Have Wisdom Teeth Three Kitchens Podcast - a home cooking showCheck out our website where you can listen to all of our episodes and find recipes on our blog: www.threekitchenspodcast.comYou can support the show with a small donation at Buy Me A Coffee.Want to be a guest? Segment 1 • Astronomy reveals God's design; astrology denies Him and is condemned in Scripture. • James Webb Telescope findings shock secularists—mature galaxies where none “should” exist. • Science confirms Scripture: the universe looks designed because it is. Segment 2 • Intelligent design without Christ still leaves you lost—salvation requires the gospel. • The universe's perfect balance exposes the myth of cosmic randomness. • Creation confirms Scripture and calls us to bold, Christ-centered apologetics. Segment 3 • Denying Adam's literal existence crumbles the foundation of sin, death, and redemption. • Genesis reads as real history—grammar, structure, and Jesus affirm it. • Evolutionary compromise leads to gospel confusion and theological collapse. Segment 4 • Old-earth views distort sin, death, and the atonement—Christ died physically because Adam's sin was physical. • Popular theories (Day-Age, Gap Theory) conflict with Scripture and science. • Literal Genesis was the historic church view—until secular science shaped theology. ___ Thanks for listening! Is the manosphere onto some uncomfortable and deep truths, or do they suffer from sampling and confirmation bias? What role is porn playing? Social media? Is the nonsense that emerged from #MeToo, with regard to blaming all men, seeing an analog now in the blaming of women? However: men and women are different. Women are more likely to think they have a “right to be right,” to embrace ideologies that privilege victims and grievances, and to be neurotic. Just as encouraging men to embrace their emotional side can enhance many men's lives, encouraging women to embrace the physical world is likely to enhance their lives. David Gokhman of the Weizmann Institute of Science explores how changes in gene regulation shaped recent human evolution. His team used massively parallel reporter assays in skeletal and neural cells to test 71,443 genetic variants that distinguish Neanderthals and Denisovans from modern humans, building a catalog that reveals hundreds of noncoding variants that alter gene expression. The work uncovers evolutionary trends and examples of convergent evolution, including an enhancer of KDM8, a gene involved in tumor progression, that was completely silenced in both archaic and modern human lineages through different mechanisms: motif disruption in Neanderthals and Denisovans, and hypermethylation in modern humans. Gokhman also introduces a way to reconstruct anatomical profiles from DNA sequence and methylation, using it to model Denisovan anatomy and scan the fossil record. The results suggest that the Harbin and Dali fossils were likely Denisovans, while Kabwe may have been related to the ancestor of Neanderthals and Denisovans, helping to clarify the regulatory changes underlying human evolution. On this, our 303rd Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss the recommendation to stop vaccinating newborns against Hepatitis B, as just handed down by ACIP (Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices) for the CDC. Why were newborns whose mothers do not have Hep B, being vaccinated against a disease that is contracted through sexual activity and dirty needles? We discuss claims of “safe and effective,” risk stratification, the childhood vaccine schedule, and what “individual-based decision-making” will mean for parents and doctors. Then, new research: tattoo ink induces inflammation in lymph nodes, and changes the immune response to vaccination. Finally: an homage to Tom Stoppard, playwright extraordinaire, author of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, Arcadia, and so much more. The Filmlosophers are back with a surprisingly joyous review of Disney's latest animated sequel, Zootopia 2! Hosts Eddie and Spencer, and Intern Manager/Managing Intern Amy dive deep into this long-awaited return to the metropolis, exploring how the film successfully built upon the original's themes, characters, and truly exceptional bunny-fox partnership. The crew celebrates the film's thoughtful handling of new social commentary (addressing the reptile/mammal divide and historical injustice) and praises the continued, endearing chemistry between Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde that anchors the entire film. In short: this sequel works, delivering a satisfying and sophisticated animated experience that defied the low expectations often set by Disney follow-ups. Plus, Intern Manager Amy brings another set of moves to the table for her popular segment "Streaming is For Lovers!" Get ready for Amy to elevator pitch two more obscure, streaming-original romantic comedies to the panel, forcing the crew to debate which hidden gem they must watch next for the sake of cinematic love (or comedic torture). 1/8. The Deep History of North American Mammals and the Arrival of Human Predators — Dan Flores — Flores's book Wild New World examines North American fauna spanning 66 million years, detailing the evolutionary processes and intercontinental migration patterns that created the diverse Pliocene animal assemblage. Flores argues that Eurasian animals including deer and elk possessed significant adaptive advantages over indigenous species because they possessed millennia of evolutionary experience with humans functioning as apex predators. Flores emphasizes that humans emerged as a distinctive carnivorous mammalian species possessing unprecedented hunting capabilities, ultimately driving them across continents and oceans in search of prey.

Last week on the Courtenay Turner Podcast we held another Technocracy Roundtable with my three favorite knights in shining armor: Patrick Wood, Aaron Day, Craig Wenclewicz  We dove head-first into one of the most disturbing new fronts in the technocratic war on humanity: the deliberate campaign to convince the public that artificial intelligence is already—or soon will be—conscious, sentient, and therefore deserving of rights, ethical consideration, and even authority over human beings. From self-evolving algorithms that rewrite their own code to claims of machine “consciousness” emerging in 2025–2026, the technocrats are no longer hiding their endgame: the creation of digital entities they believe will surpass—and ultimately replace—humanity. We'll expose the latest breakthroughs in evolutionary AI, the spiritual implications of synthetic awareness, the push for “rights” for conscious machines, and how this ties directly into transhuman convergence, tokenized souls, and the abolition of free will.

On this, our 301st Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss grief and mourning, and what makes us human. How many distinctly human traits will we prune away before we realize that we have gone too far, that there is too little remaining of humanity to be resurrected? From the Industrial Revolution(s) to that of AI, now we've got apps that threaten to keep your loved ones “alive” forever, with none of the valuable complexity that ancient grieving traditions offer. Then: bonobos show evidence of language use that is emergent—in which combinations of sounds mean more than the sum of their parts.
