When mothers give up work they don't just lose their current salary, but their future earnings growth and the benefits they would've accrued over their career. Kathryn Sollmann is a US-based career coach and author of Ambition Redefined,  Why the Corner Office Doesn't Work for Every Woman & What to Do Instead.  She advocates for staying in work once you've had children even if you think childcare expenses mean you think you can't.   Kathryn recognises that the examples of women in leadership roles are not appealing or realistic for most women's lives. The huge job managing hundreds of people on a vast salary will invariably mean you have little time for other things - like children and family. But as she explains in her book success isn't about a certain job title, it's about finding the flexibility that means you can be home nursing a sick child or ageing parent at 2pm or in the office to lead a big meeting at 7am.  She says women can have substantial careers but they have to do a professional pitch for flexibility. Doing this works 80% of the time. Not doing it, often results in rejection. My guest today believes it's time to acknowledge that not all working women are interested in climbing the corporate ladder or securing the corner office. In fact, most women want and need flexible, less life-consuming work to accommodate their real lives. And it's not weak, lacking ambition or letting down the sisterhood to pursue professional fulfillment and financial security through less lofty, or headline-making ways. Kathryn Sollmann has created and led hundreds of conferences and workshops that help women sustain and advance careers as they blend work and life. She's a regular feature in the press, talking and writing about women's work vs. family issues, challenging the status quo, debunking work-life myths, and helping women work around corporate obstacles. Recognized as a thought leader in the women and work space, her book—Ambition Redefined: Why the Corner Office Doesn’t Work for Every Woman & What to Do Instead—is the everyday woman’s guide to developing her own brand of ambition and success and finding many lucrative ways to lean “in-between” alongside caregiving for children and aging parents. In the book, Kathryn calls it like it is; everyday women want and need flexible work that allows them to unapologetically pursue their own brand of ambition and success. She shows them how without sacrificing themselves, their careers or their families.

Kathryn Sollmann is a flexwork and financial security expert and author of the book Ambition Redefined: Why the Corner Office Doesn't Work for Every Woman & What to Do Instead. A mother of two daughters, Kathryn has worked non-stop since age 16 in many flexible ways. In 2002, she co-founded the Women@Work Network, one of the first companies focused on helping women return to the workforce, and she has led many compelling events that show women alternatives to the full-time, traditional corporate grind. A frequent media resource, Kathryn’s views on women, work, and financial security have appeared in The Financial Times, the New York Times, Working Mother, and many others. Her award-winning blog, 9 Lives for Women, is read by women around the globe.Kathryn and Stew talk about the reasons why it’s essential for women to stay in the workforce instead of off-ramping when family pressures encroach on work. Kathryn is a strong advocate of women ensuring their own financial security by staying in the workplace, even if in flexible ways or with reduced hours. They discuss the many ways in which flexible work arrangements are increasingly available in various professions, especially in today’s increasingly gig economy. Kathryn describes the reality that not all women want to be CEOs and that one does not need to off-ramp, but also, that one does not have to climb to the top.
