Stephen Wilson, AKA Sinukus, has a long and storied Bay Area music industry history. This discussion starts with an introduction to The Ambient Mafia DJ collective, their compilation releases, and their move to streaming during the pandemic. Greg & Stephen discuss the use of different technology platforms to "stage-manage" all the DJs involved and their ability to seamlessly move from one set to the next all while re-streaming to multiple platforms. The conversation then moves to Stephen's background in tech and how he gained notoriety in the music tech sector by developing an embedded MP3 player in the browser for Live 365 Internet Radio. This then led to him being hired by Winamp to develop a system for accessing your music collection from the cloud and then Avid, the makers of Pro Tools, where he was originally a developer for 12 years and ultimately for the past 7 years became an architect. His development at Avid started with the challenge of latency compensation and went on to Elastic Audio, clip based gain, and cloud collaboration. All this while promoting and throwing multiple monthly parties and ultimately back to his passion for Down-Tempo chill electronic music with the Below Zero broadcast radio show on Energy 92.7 FM from 2008 to 2014. The podcast ends with a discussion of the formation of the "meta-collective", Unison, which is made up of multiple Bay Area DJ collectives that have come together to support each other and raise money for multiple charities. This super-organized, tech-forward crew also developed multiple education docs for the technology they use for supporting and managing large collective live streams. The closing track is from The Ambient Mafia compilation, Chillroom Culture Vol. 1, called Frog Pond by Mo Corleone, and featuring Beau Dream. This is an original composition by Lindsey Koma, a Digital Recording 1 student in my class at Haverford High School. She worked on this at home on her own. Here's a brief explanation from Lindsey about what she did to create the composition: "I create songs in chunks. I started out with this song using the string loop from garageband. That was what i based everything off of. I then added MIDI synths and bass to go along with the strings. I added drums and extra loops including one called Fat Pad which i re-pitched the second half of to match the rest of the song. I created the lyrics and tune as i went. I used Elastic Audio to do the voice editing. What i usually do is i create the chorus first and then i go and figure out the rest based on the chorus."

Slau - "There’s a known problem with the Edirol R-09 that might potentially affect listeners who own the machine. I was listening to Jim Fidler’s podcast, Republic of Avalon Radio, where, during his walk with his wife, he started talking about this problem where the side of the unit starts to come loose and buckle. It seems like a minor nuisance at first but it becomes a major problem if not fixed. I experienced the same thing and was surprised to find out that a lot of people are starting to see this. "Jim had one of the first units ever shipped and I followed suit about a week later. So, now that we’ve seen this effect, I bet more and more people will start to notice this. Thing is, our units are out of warranty but those people who see this now and bought their units a few months after us can still have it fixed under warranty. BTW, another issue that people have seen is that the back plate switches come loose very easily and just move freely without any effect. That was a problem that happened to both of us and is also a known issue. Edirol hasn’t done any recall or anything but I think they should. They’re replacing warranty units with a different polymer these days. Anyway, maybe this will help some folks. Jim Fidler talks about it in one of his recent episodes."
