Ambient Discourses // conversations with musicians and composers
Episode 012 / August 13, 2023 In this episode of Ambient Discourses, we have a mind-altering conversation with one of the legends in the ambient music genre, Robert Rich, an extremely prolific composer and creator who has over 50 albums to his name, over four decades of music that transports you to another time and place. In my interview with him, we talk about his origin story, the story of the poet historian Tu Fu from the Tang dynasty in the eighth century and his influence on the album "Travelers' Cloth", the commoditizing of music and art, cultivating community and a common language for collaboration, and approaching art as a sort of shaman of the arts. Today the Superior Telegram released its seventh episode of Archive Dive, the monthly history podcast hosted by Telegram reporter Maria Lockwood. Every month, Maria and a local historian dip into the archives of historic events, people and places in Superior and Douglas County. In the 1930s, Edith Carlson was a librarian who had a two-year campaign to build a Frank Lloyd Wright house in Superior. Had it succeeded, the design that Wright dubbed “Below Zero” would have been nestled in Superior's Central Park neighborhood. The connection between the world famous architect and Carlson has captured the imagination of writers on two continents. Local historian and retired librarian Teddie Meronek has written about Carlson. In this month's episode, she joins us to discuss her journey in researching Carlson and how an email from writer Philippa Lewis of England led to learning more. Carlson has quite a story, and in her, Meronek found a kindred spirit. “When I finally tracked down what she did at the library, going through annual reports and things, I found that she was first hired as a general assistant, but then she became the station's librarian, which made me feel good because that is what I was hired to do when I first went to work for the Superior Public Library,” said Meronek. In those annual reports, Meronek could see that Carlson was a determined advocate for literacy. “She was always petitioning for more books, more shelves, more space for the people she served.” That determination led to Carlson reaching out to the world-renowned Wright, an architect who designed over 1,000 structures in his lifetime, when Carlson decided it was time to build a house. She lived with her parents and was savvy about finances, saving enough money to purchase land near Gouge Park on 4th Street. While Wright was famous and in high demand, Carlson wasn't afraid to ask questions or even challenge him. During correspondence, an assistant wrote, “This is Mr. Wright's 204th house.” Carlson scribbled in a note, “Well, it may be his 204th house, but it is my first.” She took the project very seriously, knowing it would likely be the only house she'd ever build in her lifetime. “She had no problem standing toe-to-toe with him, saying this is what I need, this is my house and this is what I need, and most people would say, ‘It's Frank Lloyd Wright,'” said Meronek. The correspondence between Carlson and Wright went on for two years and the project faced various delays. In the end, ground would not be broken for a Frank Lloyd Wright house in Superior. The Great Depression had an effect, as around 1940, librarians in Superior took pay cuts and time off without pay. Suddenly now with slim paychecks, Edith couldn't afford the price. She would eventually build a house near her parents' home and the “Below Zero” house would eventually be built, just not for Carlson and not in Superior. Instead, the design was used elsewhere. “She bemoaned the fact that it just wasn't her loss, she also thought of it as Superior's loss,” said Meronek. You can find that full episode at superiortelegram.com or whatever streaming service you listen to this podcast. Today, we are re-sharing Archive Dive's sixth episode, which was released in July. It is titled "Roth's department store was ahead of its time." Enjoy!
Under One Roof by Ali Hazelwood website: https://gobookmart.com Buy Now: https://amzn.to/3wdA5Lx A scientist should never cohabitate with her annoyingly hot nemesis—it leads to combustion. Mara, Sadie, and Hannah are friends first, scientists always. Though their fields of study might take them to different corners of the world, they can all agree on this universal truth: when it comes to love and science, opposites attract and rivals make you burn… As an environmental engineer, Mara knows all about the delicate nature of ecosystems. They require balance. And leaving the thermostat alone. And not stealing someone else's food. And other rules Liam, her detestable big-oil lawyer of a roommate, knows nothing about. Okay, sure, technically she's the interloper. Liam was already entrenched in his aunt's house like some glowering grumpy giant when Mara moved in, with his big muscles and kissable mouth just sitting there on the couch tempting respectable scientists to the dark side…but Helena was her mentor and Mara's not about to move out and give up her inheritance without a fight. The problem is, living with someone means getting to know them. And the more Mara finds out about Liam, the harder it is to loathe him…and the easier it is to love him. Stephen Wilson, AKA Sinukus, has a long and storied Bay Area music industry history. This discussion starts with an introduction to The Ambient Mafia DJ collective, their compilation releases, and their move to streaming during the pandemic. Greg & Stephen discuss the use of different technology platforms to "stage-manage" all the DJs involved and their ability to seamlessly move from one set to the next all while re-streaming to multiple platforms. The conversation then moves to Stephen's background in tech and how he gained notoriety in the music tech sector by developing an embedded MP3 player in the browser for Live 365 Internet Radio. This then led to him being hired by Winamp to develop a system for accessing your music collection from the cloud and then Avid, the makers of Pro Tools, where he was originally a developer for 12 years and ultimately for the past 7 years became an architect. His development at Avid started with the challenge of latency compensation and went on to Elastic Audio, clip based gain, and cloud collaboration. All this while promoting and throwing multiple monthly parties and ultimately back to his passion for Down-Tempo chill electronic music with the Below Zero broadcast radio show on Energy 92.7 FM from 2008 to 2014. The podcast ends with a discussion of the formation of the "meta-collective", Unison, which is made up of multiple Bay Area DJ collectives that have come together to support each other and raise money for multiple charities. This super-organized, tech-forward crew also developed multiple education docs for the technology they use for supporting and managing large collective live streams. The closing track is from The Ambient Mafia compilation, Chillroom Culture Vol. 1, called Frog Pond by Mo Corleone, and featuring Beau Dream. On this week's episode, Jeff talks with Mike Pierce, better known as Antarctic Mike. Mike shares how he developed his Leading at 90 Below Zero program, and his journey to running a marathon in Antarctica. They talk about the power a story can have in building connections and making change. Mike discusses the importance of discovering what you want to do and making decisions while you still have the chance. He also shares how he learned to focus on the things you can control and let go of the things you can't in the face of difficulty.Follow Mike:https://antarcticmike.com/https://www.facebook.com/Antarctic-Mike-Speaks-1617958015119843/Twitter@antarcticmikehttps://www.linkedin.com/in/antarcticmike/https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCjVFM6mNDYNiI_mdRNsqTiQFollow Living Undeterred:Facebook: @LivingUndeterredInstagram: @LivingUndeterredTwitter: @UndeterredDadPodcast: https://linktr.ee/LivingUndeterredWebsite: www.
Soovituseks Resident Evili seeria Steamis. Hey Friends! We are back again because Bel's life has calmed down a little bit, or at least enough to be able to reasonably make our normal recording slot. Tonight we have a whole stack of things to talk about and not enough show to fit it into. So first up we talk about R-Type Final 2 which has been bouncing for a few shows and how it is very true to the PS2 original game. From there Grace talks about her recent experience finishing Subnautica and starting the Below Zero sequel. From there we talk a bit about E3 2021 so far and most specifically further information coming out about Elden Ring. This is another Dark Souls game that is not called Dark Souls. Bel also talks a bit about how weird it is that UbiSoft is working on an Avatar game... aka the big blue people and not the great sorta-anime series. Ash talks about his experience with Chicory and we talk a bit about what it is like to survive Snowpiercer the City Sim in Frostpunk. Topics Discussed R-Type Final 2 Subnautica and Below Zero E3 2021 Wholesome Games Direct UbiSoft Forward Devolver Digital Forwarder Gearbox Showcase Elden Ring Avatar Open World Game Chicory A Colorful Tale Frostpunk

@EchoChamberFP is coming at you today with three films, ones streaming on Netflix, one's on Shudder today and the other is hitting the Festival Scene today! We've got action, fear and erotic rebirth! We start off with Lluís Quílez's new film 'Bajocero' which is streaming on Netflix. It tells the story of a policeman who transfers to a new precinct and his first duty is to transport prisoners in the dead of night on a lonely back road, what could possibly go wrong! Nora Unkel wrote & directed 'A Nightmare Wakes' which hits Shudder today. The film explores the fateful trip to Lake Geneva with her lover Percy Shelley and stepsister Claire Clairmont. During this time she suffers a miscarriage, and also the birth of her famous novel 'Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus', while trapped in an opium-fuelled fever dream where reality and the novel clash! Josie Hess and Isabel Peppard's documentary 'Morgana' is playing at the 'San Francisco Indie Fest' and documents Morgana Muse's sexual reawakening. From a dutiful housewife stuck in a loveless, sexless marriage, ready to end her life. After an encounter with a male escort, she rises up to become a celebrated sex-positive feminist porn star! Mike Pierce, or “Antarctic Mike”, is a professional speaker, author, and endurance athlete. He speaks across the US and Canada to executive teams, organizations, and sales teams on how to lead people in a way that makes them fully engaged in their work. In this episode, Mike shares how his love of polar expedition history and endurance sports led to the creation of his flagship program, Leading at 90 Below Zero, which connects the principles of the Antarctic expedition to the real world of finding, engaging, and keeping great people in today’s business world. Puss hej!

Anthem + Destiny = Anthony. Professor Devin Fernandez joins the pod this week. Topics include my strong hateful feelings towards For Honor even though I continue to play it, some praise for Subnautica and hype for it’s new stand alone expansion; Below Zero, the new DLC for Civ 6; Gathering Storm and our approach to choosing our Civs, why I won’t be covering Metro Exodus, and Devin’s preliminary 6 out of 10 rating for Anthem.
The panel has a meaty and deep 48-minute demo of Cyberpunk 2077 to go over. They talk about everything they loved, as well as some things that concern them about the game as well as CD Projekt Red. It seems that the rumors were true. Xbox has announced Xbox All-Access which allows consumers to take on a 2-year contract where they can pay monthly for either an Xbox One S or X alongside Game Pass and Live Gold. The Xbox One X plan will go for $35 a month for 2 years, whereas Xbox One S will be priced at $22 a month for two years, which was previously unknown. When everything is tallied up Xbox One S subscribers will save a total of $132 whereas Xbox One X subscribers will save around $20 off MSRP. In quickie news we had: Battlefield V has been delayed from Oct 19th to Nov. 20th, Unknown Worlds announces Subnautica standalone arctic expansion titled ‘Below Zero’, Xbox is releasing a new robot white Elite controller for $150 releasing in October, Xbox also announced a Fallout 76/Xbox One X bundle w/ the 1st white XOX model. The codename for PS5 may have been found via two console lists on the Unreal Engine 4’s backend. The codename is apparently ‘Erebus’ and fits in line with the Greek-themed codenames. Erebus, who’s described as darkness personified, is often referred to as ‘one of the first 5 to exist’. It’s believed to be an iteration of the PS4 as opposed to the PS5 considering the Greek naming convention has been used for the PS4, PSVR, and the PS4 Pro specifically.

Join Anna and Stephanie Scheller as they have a powerful interview with Mike Pierce, otherwise known as Antarctic Mike. Mike famously became one of nine people to have run a marathon on the Antarctic continent and has written a book about his experience titled Leading At 90 Below Zero.
Mike Pierce, better known as Antarctic Mike, connects the drivers and principles of Antarctic expedition history stories to the real world of finding, engaging and keeping great people in today’s business world. Mike reveals what drives him to take on ridiculously difficult goals. His advice: Don’t make assumptions about what others will find challenging. Understand what their prize is. Everyone, every day, is called on to be a leader. Key Takeaways [2:22] Mike’s program, “Leading at 90 Below Zero,” began when Mike was teaching a four-day leadership course and found inspiration in the book, The Shackleton Way. In a few minutes, he realized there would be many lessons for the real world in the account of Shackleton’s Antarctic expedition. [7:02] Ernest Shackleton picked the best people. He started by publishing an extraordinary recruitment piece. More than 5,000 applied. Selection comes down to character. Assuming you pick the right people, you have to make sure they want to go all in. The leader’s job is to be the catalyst to get the team, individually and collectively, to push all the chips into the center of the table. [14:03] One of the challenges of hiring is to find the right people. Mike thinks character is not in short supply, but it is time-consuming to find. You have to look at people one at a time. An organization needs to offer an opportunity that’s compelling and challenging enough for a candidate to say they want to learn more about it.[16:27] Most good companies have good opportunities, but they don’t showcase them very well. Don’t let your company drown in the sea of similarity. Mike uses an example to tell how a compelling story can put your company ahead.[21:10] Mike considers how the introversion of an endurance athlete, with their long periods of uninterrupted hours of training, is advantageous in a team member. Each member has to perform at the highest level. You can’t allow circumstances to become excuses. You have to overcome them or go around them to go forward. This requires the level of discipline that an endurance athlete acquires. [25:36] Mike’s book, The Penguin Principle, was born out of his frustration about mass emailings that had no bearing on him or his needs. The emperor penguin survives the Antarctic winter in teams. Each penguin is more concerned about their mate and their chick than for themselves. Mike would like salespeople to think more about him and his needs than their needs when they contact him. [28:25] Mike discusses the historical background to Shackleton’s planned Antarctic crossing. The South Pole had already been reached by a competitor, but no one had gone from one side of Antarctica to another. Ego was a big part of their setting out on an extraordinary two-year expedition. None of them lost hope and they all came back alive. Shackleton played the role of the leader very well. [34:12] Mike reveals what drives him to take on ridiculously difficult goals. He likes to do what no one else has done. He’s a disruptor. Everyone defines ‘challenge’ in a different way. Don’t make assumptions about what others will find challenging. Understand what their prize is. Everybody’s in the race for a reason. Wake them to their reason. Mike says that everyone, every day, is called to be a leader. Wake them to their reason. The companies that get and keep the best employees and customers are the ones doing things no one has done before. “People have to want to go all in.” “The advantage of being by yourself is that the discipline has to be self-imposed.” “The best teams … almost don’t need a manager … if all the team members have an inherent sense of self-discipline.” “Every person, every day is called to lead. Every employee ... has to think on their feet. They have to make decisions.” Bio Mike Pierce, better known as Antarctic Mike, works with organizations that want to find, engage and keep the best-performing people. Mike’s background professionally started in the recruiting business in 1997, working specifically to show managers and leaders exactly how to identify and recruit the best people. He now speaks across the U.S. and Canada to executive teams, organizations, associations and sales teams about how to lead people so they are fully engaged in what they do. Mike is an avid fan of polar expedition history and is an endurance athlete. In 2006, Mike became one of 9 people to run the first ever Antarctic Ice Marathon and a year later became the first American to run the Antarctic 100k, a grueling 62 miles on an ice shelf 600 miles from the South Pole. His flagship program, Leading at 90 Below Zero, connects the drivers and principles of Antarctic expedition history stories to the real world of finding, engaging and keeping great people in today’s business world. Mike has a BA from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and resides in Encinitas, CA with his wife Angela. How can you really ever know what your limits are unless you are constantly testing and challenging them? And when times are tough, how does one continue to pour hope into people? Mike Pierce, better known as “Antarctic Mike,” is a professional speaker who works with organizations that want to find, engage and keep the best-performing people. And, boy, can he ever tell a story. With a successful background in sales and recruitment, Mike had a long-held desire to speak professionally. In 2001, he came across a book called “Shackleton's Way,” which told the story of a team of 28 men trying to become the first group to attempt to cross the Antarctic on foot, back in 1914. They became stranded for over two years before finally returning home. As you’ll hear from Mike, that book and its contents had a profound effect on him and his life and career from that point forward. In the time since, Mike became one of nine people to run the first ever Antarctic Ice Marathon and later became the first American to run the Antarctic 100K, a grueling 62 miles on an ice shelf 600 miles from the South Pole. What I haven’t mentioned yet is that Mike lives in Southern California. If you lived among the swaying palm trees, would you challenge yourself to a) run a marathon and b) do it in so harsh an environment as Antarctica? And how would you even adequately prepare for change in environment like that?In this episode, Mike addresses both why and how he did those things in a very captivating fashion. His flagship program, “Leading At 90 Below Zero,” connects the principles of Antarctic expedition history to the real world of finding, engaging and keeping great people in today's business world. Mike shares all kinds of incredible wisdom and experience in this extraordinary story. Here are just three things that stood out to me: You've got to go - This is advice he received and and talk, about actually going to the Antarctic and having the experience first-hand. It's just like anything else, you can only learn so much without actually going and doing it. The greatest threat? You’re carrying it with you - We live in a culture that is quick to make excuses and point fingers. But I agree wholeheartedly with Mike when he suggests that the greatest threat to anything that you're looking to do retrieve are actually the mental threats in your own mind. Difficulty is something to run toward - Among the many great things Mike says in this episode was “I thought difficulty with something you run toward.” Over and over again, you will hear Mike talk about not knowing what to do but just moving forward anyway, running toward difficulty. This is just like facing your fear. The way to dissolve the fear is to step into it and the way to make something difficult doable is to start doing it.

Концертные альбомы, такие как "Calling Down the Sky" (2004) и "Humidity" (2000) задокументировали его уникальные импровизации. Yahia Mehamdi (Thank you for your Patience, 2003) и Daniel Colvin (Atlas Dei, 2007 - 90 минут музыки Роберта в surround-формате), а также для видеоинсталляций Michael Somoroff (Illumination, 2007). Things that Go Bump in the Night, ACID Loop Library Liquid Planet, WayOutWares TimewARP2600, и для синтезаторов Camel Audio.

A special Skype call episode where we talk to the co-founders of the Great American Pitch Fest (who are also writers themselves) Signe Olynyk and Bob Schultz. They're in the UK promoting their new feature, Below Zero and also talking about a pitchfest spin off being held at the London Screenwriters Festival. But we wanted to ask them about a controversial issue. Is it right for writers to charge other writers for events? Why do they cost so much? Could they be cheaper?

If you see a plume of black smoke rising from the crossfader then you know Smoove (a.k.a. Ian Chang) just got off the decks. That was the case again last Saturday night at “Shackled”, a rockin' up-and-coming monthly at Shine Dance Lounge (http://www.shinesf.com), where Smoove provided the perfect climax to a fantastic party with one of his signature breakbeat sets. And guess who just so happened to be there to record it for your listening enjoyment? If you've spent any length of time in the San Francisco dance scene, Smoove needs no introduction. He's been igniting packed dance floors (and wearing out crossfaders) with infectious booty-shakin' beats for almost ten years now. But if you aren't from around these parts (or don't get out that often) here's a little more background on this week's talented guest DJ..... Rising out of the 90's Drum 'n Bass scene in San Francisco, Smoove quickly became a fixture on the underground Breakz circuit in 2001 DJ'ing with The Space Cowboys and their mighty Unimog. These days his signature power-funk Breakz sound can be heard every weekend all over San Francisco's night life, from underground warehouse parties to his residencies at The End Up, 1015 and Mighty. All his hard work in the night club trenches has earned him membership in nitevibe.com's DJ Dream Team since 2004 and was voted Best DJ 2008 by the readers of the S.F. Bay Guardian in their annual "Best of the Bay" issue. Taking his sound to the airwaves, Smoove has been featured on XM Satellite Radio's Thump Funk show (XM 80) as well as Below Zero on Energy 92.7 and was a frequent guest on Future Breaks on KUSF. Currently, he can be heard on Fog City Funk every Wednesday night at 8pm PST on Nu Skool Breaks Radio (nsbradio.co.uk) In 2004 he, along with Donna Matrix, started publishing the underground magazine NewsBreakz and more recently launched NBz 2.0 (newsbreakz.com) the on-line version in late 2008. Simply put, Smoove is one of the quintessential taste makers in the San Francisco Breakz scene today and can always be relied on to bring a big party fun sound that makes the crowd go giddy on the dance floor. Smoove's mix is also available on The Gough Street Sessions podcast: http://bit.ly/goughstreet-iTunes
