In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, brought to you by Topo Athletic, in honor of Valentine's Day, we are once again putting love front and center-stage. We're joined by Annie and Jake, known on trail as Pistol and Lobo, who met at mile 166 of the Appalachian Trail in 2021 and are about to come full circle, getting married at Fontana Dam, the exact spot where they first met. We get the low down on how this romance was absolutely love at first sight, how and where things evolved from flirtation to romance to a full-blown committed relationship on trail, moving into a school bus post-trail, their attempt at recreating the magic on the PCT a few years later (spoiler alert: it was less magical), and tips to aspiring romantic hiker trash on how to find and sustain love on trail. We wrap the show with which pieces of gear a Trek Writer with more than 10,000 miles has eliminated from her pack, our internal dialogue while eating ice cream (and why maybe I have a problem), my ENEMY of the week (fitness influencer edition), and the triple crown of relationship hacks.   Topo Athletic: Use code "TREKWINTER15" at topoathletic.com. In this whimsical episode of Tangent Station, hosts dive into the hilarity of Rent a Backstory—a service that transforms mundane lives into tales of intrigue. They also poke fun at the annual tradition of Groundhog Day, where Punxsutawney Phil, America's furry oracle, predicts the weather with dubious accuracy. Amidst playful banter, they explore the influence of the 1993 Bill Murray movie and reflect on humanity's quirky obsession with predicting meteorological patterns through whimsical and often absurd traditions. Throughout, a blend of humor, nostalgia, and engaging tangents keeps listeners entertained.

The Ghost Furnace - Episode 145 "Groundhog Day"   "...Now on this February 2nd, Punxsutawney Phil, the seer of seers, the prognosticator of all prognosticators, was awakened from his wintry nap at dawn on Gobbler's Knob..." Every year in a small Pennsylvania town, thousands of people stand for hours in the predawn cold to catch a glimpse of a 100+ year old groundhog. They are not only kept warm by the ceremonial dancing, the locally brewed beer, the VFW pancakes and the company of a secret order of marmot wranglers. But chiefly by the hope, that this small brown woodchuck will gaze into the either and divine an early spring.    If you have a story you'd like to share, you can find us on Instagram, YouTube and TheGhostFurnacePodcast@gmail.com

Is Punxsutawney Phil the punchline now? Satire, scandals and why everything feels absurd

The Ohioan

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 8, 2026 2:52

What happens when serious news fatigue collides with absurd tradition? Somehow, Punxsutawney Phil ends up in the conversation — and not in a way anyone expected. In this segment, we lean fully into satire to make a bigger point about how everything feels upside down right now.We start with the reality that conversations about major scandals have become exhausting. Names get mentioned. Fingers get pointed. Nothing seems to move forward in a meaningful way. And eventually, the whole thing turns into punchlines instead of progress. That's where the joking comparison comes in — not because a groundhog is actually involved in anything sinister, but because that's how unserious the discourse has become. When everything is reduced to “mentions” and headline fodder, it starts to feel like anyone — even Punxsutawney Phil — could be dragged into the cycle. Four mentions? Thirty-eight thousand mentions? At some point, the numbers lose meaning, and outrage becomes background noise. The joke lands because it mirrors how ridiculous the conversation itself has become. We also touch on how comedians and commentators are now getting threatened over jokes that reference publicly reported information. Satire is suddenly treated like a crime, while real accountability still feels out of reach. That contrast is part of the frustration — and part of why humor becomes the release valve. From late-night comedy to social media reactions, everything feels exaggerated, reactive, and performative. Instead of clarity or closure, we get noise. Instead of justice, we get arguments about optics. And somehow, that leads us to joking about inner circles, secret files, and whether Gobbler's Knob is the next most infamous island in America.Obviously, it's all said with humor — but underneath the laughs is a real observation about how disconnected the process feels. When people stop taking the conversation seriously, satire fills the gap. And once you're joking about a weather-predicting groundhog being part of a scandal, you know something has gone off the rails.Check out my work at https://www.cleveland.com/staff/cpugh/Support the podcast at https://linktr.ee/ChrisPughEdits#PunxsutawneyPhil, #GroundhogDay, #Satire, #PoliticalHumor, #MediaCriticism, #NewsCommentary, #PodcastClip, #Absurdity, #CulturalCommentary, #LateNightComedy, #CurrentEvents, #PopCultureTalk, #HumorInNews, #MediaCycle, #OverexposedStories, #CommentaryPodcast, #AmericanTraditions, #JokesAndTruth, #NewsFatigue, #ConversationClip

“If the most famous groundhog in America is wrong 65% of the time… why are we still listening to him?”That's the question that kickstarts this wildly entertaining episode of The Ben and Skin Show, featuring Ben Rogers, Jeff “Skin” Wade, Kevin “KT” Turner, and Krystina Ray. And from the opening seconds, the crew wastes no time diving into one of the strangest annual American traditions — Groundhog Day. The segment launches inside KT's Cubbyhole, where the gang breaks down everything that went down at Gobbler's Knob at 6:20 a.m. — including the dramatic proclamation of “six more weeks of winter,” delivered by a man reading a scroll like he's starring in a low-budget medieval play. But the real comedy starts when KT unleashes his scorching take:“Punxsutawney Phil is one of the worst animals we've got in our entire life.”Why? Because America's favorite weather rodent sports a stunningly bad 35% accuracy rate — the kind of hit rate that would get any sports bettor, meteorologist, or carnival psychic fired instantly. Meanwhile, other lesser-known critters — like Concord Charlie and Gertie the Groundhog — are out here hitting 65–85% and getting none of the glory. But things get… darker.KT drops a bombshell: Staten Island Chuck is dead, Concord Charlie has mysteriously vanished, and the gang openly wonders if there's a groundhog conspiracy brewing across America. Is someone eliminating the competition? Are weather rodents meeting an untimely fate? “Are they coming up missing?” Krystina asks, only half joking.

This week on Beer Belly Sports, it's just Matt and Bruce, holding it down and letting it rip like the good ol' days. The guys dive headfirst into the Minnesota Twins, breaking down the latest signings and what they mean for the season ahead — plus a big conversation about Byron Buxton representing Team USA in the World Baseball Classic. Of course, Bruce had to get something off his chest and finally talk some Minnesota Vikings — it's been a few weeks, and the purple thoughts were piling up. Things take a turn when the guys read a Missed Connections that somehow gets more uncomfortable by the sentence — because nothing says sports podcast like awkward romance and second-hand embarrassment. You'll also get the Beer Belly Sports NFL Picks for the Divisional Round, because bad decisions don't make themselves, and the boys are once again trusting the vibes, the spreads, and questionable logic.Along the way, the show takes a hard left turn when you learn a shocking fact about Matt:

Send us a textFive heavy hitters enter a blind tasting; a tie forces a live tiebreak and the crown goes to Old Man Winter With a prestige French oak finish. We trade hype for flavor, argue proof vs. balance, and learn how availability shapes a worthy Scotchy Bourbon Boys “Bourbon of the year.”• sponsors thanked and distillery updates shared• lineup set for the blind: five bourbons, one wild card on the side• simple scoring rules agreed, color coding to prevent bias• first-pass notes on cola, peanut, vanilla, and fruit-forward profiles• proof chat and how it affects palate, not just heat• debate on noses vs palates, dryness vs sweetness• tally confusion resolved, two-way tie identified• audience tiebreak selects Old Man Winter as winner• value and availability weighed against rarity and price• honorable mentions and how oxidation changes bottles over timeMake sure that you leave us good feedback on Apple and iHeart and Spotify five-star rating and everything. Leave a review and then become members. What happens when you strip away labels, lock in a scoring system, and let the glass do the talking? We gathered the full crew, poured five of the year's most talked-about bourbons completely blind, and chased the truth through cola notes, peanut vibes, dessert-like vanilla, and bright, fruit-forward finishes. The lineup was stacked: Knob Creek 21, Russell's Reserve 13 (2025), A Midwinter Night's Dram, Cathedral French Oak, and Old Man Winter from Preservation. Expectations were sky high for the heavy hitters—but the scoreboard had other plans. We walk you through the tasting rules, the early favorites, and the turning point when pour number three changed the room's mood. Proof chasers met balance seekers as a silky 90s-proof contender outperformed its label, while a 110-proof nose bomb turned out more polarizing on the palate than predicted. Cathedral French Oak cast a spell on the nose. Knob 21 delivered oak-driven structure. Russell's 13 flashed that rich sweetness many love. Midwinter offered juicy fruit and charm. But the question we kept asking was simple: which glass makes you want another pour?By the end, scores tied between two colors and we pulled in a live audience to break it. The winner? Old Man Winter—an underdog that paired layered fruit, spice control, and a welcoming finish with the practical upside of being findable at retail. We dig into why availability matters for a “Bourbon of the Year,” what blind tasting reveals about our biases, and how time in the bottle can flip your rankings weeks later. Stick around for honorable mentions, lessons learned from oxidation, and a reminder that great whiskey doesn't always wear the most expensive label. If you enjoyed this blind battle, follow the show, share it with a bourbon friend, and drop your own top pick of the year in a review. Jerry returns to the show for another deep dive into the South Mountains of North Carolina—a region he calls one of the strangest “hotspot” corridors he's ever researched. Drawing from decades of local accounts, family histories, and firsthand reports, Jerry traces a chilling pattern of unexplained activity across the South Mountains, the Great Smokies, the Blue Ridge, and even the Pacific Northwest. This episode unfolds like a living archive of the weird: early-1900s stories of eerie vocalizations rolling through the hollers, barns disturbed in the dead of night, and unsettling encounters that left families questioning what really stalks those ridgelines. From Carpenter's Knob to backroads you'd never notice on a map, the stories stack up—each one different, yet threaded by the same sense of being watched, followed, or hunted. Then the episode pivots into something even darker: the black-eyed children phenomenon.Through Dave, the lifelong partner of Susan, we hear her spine-freezing encounter that followed her mother's death—a night marked by a knock at the door, a request to be let inside, and the unmistakable terror of realizing something wasn't human. Susan's experience mirrors incidents tied to her mother years earlier, raising disturbing questions about generational patterns, grief triggers, and why certain places seem to attract the unexplainable.By the end, you'll be left wondering what makes these mountains a magnet for high-strangeness—and whether some forces don't just haunt locations… but follow bloodlines.Get Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteSupport Our SponsorsEpisode Timeline00:00 – Welcome back to the South Mountains series01:35 – What makes a “hotspot”? This episode of Beyond Sunday centers on the theme of peace in the middle of chaos, as Michael Shearon and Josh Hensley are joined by counselors Adam and Kathy Glover for a thoughtful Advent conversation. Grounded in Philippians 4, the group reflects on how peace is formed through praise and prayer, protected by God's promise, and ultimately ruled by Jesus—the Prince of Peace. Along the way, the conversation weaves together Scripture, lived experience, and honest reflection on how difficult peace can feel during the holiday season. The discussion also dives into practical realities many families face—setting healthy boundaries, distinguishing concern from anxiety, and navigating relationships without carrying unnecessary emotional weight. Adam and Kathy offer wisdom on peacemaking versus peacekeeping, while the group reminds listeners that genuine peace doesn't come from controlling circumstances, but from trusting Christ and focusing our minds on what is true. The episode closes with encouragement for the Cadiz Campus launch on December 21 and an invitation for listeners to submit questions for an upcoming New Year's Q&A episode. Let all that you do be done in love.” — 1 Corinthians 16:13–14 (ESV) “Be Watchful” What does Spiritual Vigilance look like? ““Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion.” — 1 Peter 5:8 (ESV)” Being watchful means being alert — guarding your home, your marriage, your heart. Spiritual drift happens slowly; vigilance prevents it. Modern distractions (screens, busyness, comfort) dull our alertness. Thoughts on why this is the first command from Paul How can we stay spiritually awake when the world wants to lull you to sleep? “Stand Firm in the Faith” How do we stay anchored in truth and not be tossed around by opinion? “Stand firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel.” — Philippians 1:27 (ESV)” Standing firm means knowing what you believe and why.  Is it arrogance or conviction? Is it rooted in grace? The faith here is the faith. The truth revealed in scripture.  What truths have we compromised because standing firm felt uncomfortable? “Act like Men” Paul's command “act like men” means be courageous, mature, and responsible. What does that look like? “Be strong, and show yourself a man.” — 1 Kings 2:2 (ESV)” Real men don't run from responsibility, they bear it.  The call to manhood is a call to maturity.  Why does biblical masculinity get labeled as “agggression?” Why can't it be moral and spiritual bravery? What responsibilities has God placed in your life that require courage today? “Be Strong”    Godly strength is dependence on grace, not self. “Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.” — Ephesians 6:10 (ESV)” Paul isn't saying “man up” or “try harder.” He's saying “rely on God's power.”  Why do we miss this? Strength that isn't spirit-filled becomes pride. Weakness is the doorway to divine strength.  This is counter-cultural “ Let All That You Do Be Done in Love” Love is what keeps strength from becoming hardness “And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.” — Colossians 3:14 (ESV)” Love balances authority with gentleness. Real leadership is servant leadership. What does this look like? Love is not weakness, it's the might of Christ expressed in humility How can your leadership reflect both strength and tenderness?
