It's Theresa and Marielena talking the art of living together on Spirituality and Politics. First up, a share about a special local happening. On Sunday, July 21, Hey Neighbor Food Club is hosting their first event at the Old Dutch Church in Kingston (4–6pm). It's a preorder-and-pickup food event featuring handmade dishes -- tamales, pupusas, empanadas -- prepared by a small group of incredible local chefs, most of whom are female immigrants launching their very first food businesses. The chefs are part of the Briico Food Academy, which helps new entrepreneurs build sustainable income, community connections, and confidence through food, without needing outside capital or formal business experience. Each meal tells a story of migration, tradition, and resilience, and proceeds go directly to the chefs.Marielena shares her experience teaching art to women incarcerated at the Ulster County Jail and the many interactions that taught her about them and their lives including surprising insights through the vision boards the women created, their creative writing exercises, and how they collaborated with one another. Through that experience she shares her thoughts about how living together in an incarcerated setting can teach us about the art of living together in a broader community. The womens' art "Voices Unbound" is currently exhibited at Unison in New Paltz now through August 31st.This weekend is Upstate Art Weekend. Send us a textSecondary music classrooms are increasingly challenged by student disengagement—especially when traditional models fail to resonate with today's learners. In this compelling episode, professional bassist and music educator Richard Frank introduces his Unison-Based Content (UBC) approach, a student-centered framework designed to revitalize music programs and re-engage learners of all skill levels.UBC shifts away from the conventional jazz band structure, offering a more inclusive model that welcomes diverse instrumentation—including non-traditional instruments—and varying skill levels from the start. By blending formal (notation and theory) and informal (playing by ear) learning traditions, Frank creates a “blended space” where all students feel validated and empowered.Educators will gain practical strategies for:Engaging mixed-skill ensembles with adaptable arrangementsIncorporating tab notation and alternative instrumentsEncouraging improvisation through simultaneous group playingPromoting student agency through choice and music analysisSupporting SEL through confidence-building collaborationConnecting classroom music to real-world performance opportunitiesIdeal for secondary educators seeking to refresh their approach or supplement existing programs, this method bridges the gap between traditional music education and contemporary student needs.Explore ready-to-use resources at PlayTheGroove.com and discover how UBC can transform your classroom into a space where all students groove—and grow.

It's our monthly conversation about Spirituality and Politics. Joining Marielena and me in the first half of the show today is Marcina Hale, Program Director at Reconsider. She was on the show back in 2019. (Check out show #52 to hear her story). She is an Executive Producer of Fantastic Fungi, Producer of Disturbing the Peace and There is Another Way, and a facilitator for Reconsider's work ”play” shop experiences, which have been held in the U.S. and internationally. Marcina spoke at TEDxKC Women about how to change the world in which we are living. Marcina's vision is to catalyze the creation of experiences that evoke thought and conversations that both challenge and inspire new ways of relating to ourselves and to life itself. There Is Another Way tells the story of a group of visionaries who refuse to surrender to violence and injustice, and in doing so show that another path is possible - for them, for us, for all of humanity. As we are all faced with essential questions about who we are, will we choose collective liberation, where the needs, rights, and safety of all are prioritized - in which our humanity comes first, knowing that no one is free until everyone is free.Combatants for Peace, nominated for two Nobel Peace Prizes, is an extraordinary bi-national group of former enemy combatants -Israelis and Palestinians - working together during an ongoing armed conflict. Faced with the devastation and escalating violence of October 7th and the war in Gaza, the very core of the movement must face great challenges and show that there is another way. The first question they have to face is their own belief... Is this possible?Reconsider is hosting a virtual screening of the film this Thursday, June 12th and an in person screening at the Rosendale Theater on July 25th.Our conversation inspires some deep reflection on what we believe is possible, and what we're doing to hold that vision for peace.Marielena shares info about the upcoming "Voices Unbound," Art Exhibit from incarcerated women at Unison following their Art Spark Program. June 21st opening from 1-5pm. The show will run through July. Sister Rosetta Tharpe was known as the ‘godmother of rock and roll' and influenced countless musicians from Elvis to Johnny Cash. Now Olivier Award-winning performer Beverley Knight is playing Sister Rosetta in a new production, Marie and Rosetta, which has just opened at the Rose Theatre in London. It tells the story of Rosetta and her singing partner, Marie Knight, described as one of the most remarkable and revolutionary duos in music history. Beverley joins Nuala McGovern in the Woman's Hour studio to discuss how the show hopes to restore these forgotten musical heroines to the spotlight. The Government has announced that care workers will no longer be recruited from overseas as part of a crackdown on visas for lower-skilled workers. The care sector has criticised the plans as "cruel" and "short-sighted". To discuss this and what good care looks like, Nuala is joined by Gavin Edwards, Head of Social Care at Unison, and care worker Kathryn Faulke, author of the memoir Every Kind of People: A Journey into the Heart of Care Work. It's thought that around 3 to 4% of people in the UK, that's one in 20, have ADHD - Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. However many women still remain undiagnosed for decades of their lives, with those in their 40s, 50s and 60s only now discovering they have it for the first time. Jo Beazley was diagnosed with ADHD just two years ago at the age of 49, after her symptoms worsened during the menopause. She joins Nuala along with Amanda Kirby, the former chair of the ADHD Foundation and a professor in the field of neurodiversity. This week we'll be hearing different perspectives on the recent Supreme Court ruling on the definition of a woman under the Equality Act, and how it could and should be interpreted on the ground. The Equality and Human Rights Commission has issued interim guidance that, in places open to the public, trans women shouldn't use women's facilities such as toilets. Today Nuala speaks to Robin Moira White, a barrister who specialises in taking discrimination cases, and who is also a trans woman. Robin transitioned in 2011 and is co-author of A Practical Guide to Transgender Law. Presenter: Nuala McGovern Producer: Sarah Jane Griffiths

Those of us who survived the 60s did have one invaluable take-away ... culture follows music.  While powerful anti-establishment lyrics did temporarily redirect the war industry, so we thought, those tumultuous times we're orchestrated to plant insidious seeds for a larger psyop that would later reveal itself. On this Alfacast we have a delightful musical talent making waves through music, but with eyes wide open.  Grant ‘Prezence' Ellman is a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and producer from Sedona, Arizona. His 2021 truth-bomb dismantling the SCAM of “covid” and “government” was censored from Spotify within a week of release. Prezence is fiercely devoted to his mission of spreading TRUTH, FREEDOM and LOVE through radio ready records, vivid videos and lucid live performances. His studio work is completely self-produced, mixed, mastered, shot, edited and promoted, with a true DIY ethos and work ethic. On stage, Prezence captivates audiences by live looping multiple instruments, singing soulful vocals & live mixing — "dubbing" his loops. His innovative Ableton Live rig pays homage to dub pioneers King Tubby & Lee "Scratch" Perry as well as modern dub masters Umberto Echo and Laurent “Tippy I” Alfred. With heavy inspiration from the modern reggae of Midnite, Protoje, Jesse Royal, Kabaka Pyramid, Grant weaves elements of funk, jazz and rock into a sonic tapestry that is uniquely, and undeniably, Prezence. In just one false election cycle, he's released three albums worth of singles, videos to boot. His empowering energy has graced main stages at Rise & Vibes, Unison, Music & Sky, Totality, Viva Iriezona, Anarchapulco, The Greater Reset, where he's supported the likes of Steel Pulse, Tribal Seeds, Kabaka Pyramid, The Elovaters, The Movement, Mike Love and Dub FX — just to name a few. Prezence is grateful to have found his life's purpose making music and sharing that gift with others.  Please join this episode as we have an insightful discussion on the present state of our world, and if we're lucky, Prezence just may entertain us with an inspiring tune. Afternoon all,I've gone solo again as I enjoyed it so much last week and Jai is still going through it. He'll be back next week.Points I covered here:* Planned protest - Made a mockery and laughing stock of Chelsea fans. Needs to be done in unison, needs some proper organisation across some polls, needs even like an independent fan board to head and organise it the right way with pro graphics etc. Does not need Racism, Xenophobia, fans bickering over the real reasons for the protests, and needs context and reason as to why it's happening. The word ‘American' or ‘Yanks' should not feature in ANY promo material for it or by anyone protesting.* Going through the latest fan Polls on owners/SDs* Can SDs/Club turn things around? * New info, SDs are under some pressure after January window weakened the squad.* Viktor Gyokeres and Marc Guehi linked - is it briefings to calm fans down or are they genuine? Gyokeres 27 in June, Guehi 25 in July. Right step forward?* Villa vs Chelsea 5.30pm Saturday - Villa could go one point behind us. Looked good against Liverpool. Thanks for stopping by!Peace, Si. Federal Tech Podcast: Listen and learn how successful companies get federal contracts

Connect to John Gilroy on LinkedIn   https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-gilroy/ Want to listen to other episodes? www.Federaltechpodcast.com Technology comes and goes; you can call it the cloud, zero trust, or even Artificial intelligence. In early 2025, we see stress that we have not seen before. The GAO has issued a report examining the federal IT Acquisition process and concluding that it needs to strengthen oversight, implement a mature acquisition strategy, and have a capacity-capable system. Today, we sat down with Reid Jackson from Unison to discuss how to make these key acquisitions.  During the interview, he discussed Acquisition Management, Cost Engineering, Virtual Acquisition, and Project Management. Unison has been involved in federal acquisition since 1984 and has a deep and thorough understanding of the procurement process.  Reid Jackson relates that some newer organizations may have a superficial knowledge of regulations and may deploy software solutions that do not enable astute and effective decisions for federal agencies. During the interview, Reid Jackson from Unison overviews many aspects of these challenges.

The goals of the project are to: Complicate the current good vs, evil/us vs. them narrative while eliciting understanding and extracting nuances from all sides. Engage in local micro politics while placing these issues in the larger current political landscape.Create a space for hospitable democracy.Share understanding about issues affecting our communities to a broader audience.Walsh founded the experimental music and performance venue the Heinz Afterworld Lounge, and co-founded and conceived of the all women, all toy instrument ensemble Toychestra.  Walsh worked for many years as a curator and administrator at CESTA, an international art center in Czech republic, whose team created radical curatorial projects to foster cross-cultural understanding. A Good Start To 2025. On Saturday last leading trade union activists from across the island of Ireland came together in Newry for a packed Ireland's Future event in the Thomas Davis Hub. It was a wet winter morning and i was pleasantly uplifted by the turn out. The panel included ICTU assistant general secretary Gerry Murphy, Unison regional general secretary Patricia McKeown, Phil Ni Sheaghdha, general secretary of the Nurses and Midwives Organisation, Katie Morgan of FORSA, Greg Ennis of SIPTU and Gerry McCormack of the ICTU. It was a lively and informative debate which pointed to a much better future for workers in a united Ireland.Ireland's Future is for holding the referendums by 2030 and Saturday's public sectoral meeting is part of a consultation for what it believes is the ‘crucial five-year period' ahead of us.Niall Murphy, who is the secretary of Ireland's Future explained that it seeks “to continue to inform, educate and stimulate the conversation on constitutional change in the years preceding a referendum. The pace of change has quickened and we are firmly of a belief that a referendum will take place around the year 2030, therefore it is incumbent upon the political administrations in Dublin, Belfast and London to prepare, and it is also imperative that civil society, including the trade union movement, recognises the constitutional space we are now entering.”Let the Music Keep Your Spirits HighI am not a big watcher of television. When I have my way – which is usually when everyone else is out – the TV goes on only when there is something I want to watch. Other times it is a constant background noise. An intrusion. Like white noise.Sometimes I just like the silence. Or some good music.Alexia and I have become friends. I like to listen to music when I'm writing. So Radio Na Gaeltachta, Radio Fáilte, Lyric, Radio Ulster and RTE Radio1 are my broadcasters of choice. I also have tons of tunes on my phone. And an IPod loaded up with thousands of songs from Seamus Drumm who has the most expansive reservoir of ceol of anyone I know. My ambition is to listen to all Seamie's collection before I die. Listening to music on these various devices wraps me in a melodious comfort blanket of uplifting sounds. Sometimes I will even join in.A CeasefireThe ceasefire in Gaza is only a step in a long process. It is about justice, peace, and the right of the Palestinian people to have self determination.
