In this episode of You Are Not Broken, I sit down with Susan Guidi — and this conversation is such a beautiful reminder that it is never too late to become who you were meant to be. Susan shares her journey growing up in a Cuban Catholic family, where cultural expectations around marriage, sexuality, and identity were very clear — and very rigid. We talk about how those early narratives shape the way we see ourselves as women… and how hard it can be to untangle them later in life. After a difficult divorce, Susan didn't shrink. She expanded. She reinvented herself through stand-up comedy (yes, really) and eventually stepped onto a bodybuilding stage — proving that transformation isn't reserved for the young. It's reserved for the brave. We talk about: How culture influences the stories we believe about ourselves Why comedy can be deeply therapeutic What it takes to compete in bodybuilding later in life The power of community support during major life transitions Why mindset matters more than motivation The role of nutrition in strength and longevity Redefining your identity after divorce, career shifts, or midlife change Why sharing your story can liberate someone else This episode is about empowerment — not the fluffy kind, but the earned kind. The kind that comes from taking control of your health, your body, your voice, and your future. Susan is living proof that you are not too old, too late, too divorced, too inexperienced, or too anything. You are just in the middle of becoming. If this conversation resonates, share it with a woman who needs to hear that reinvention is still on the table. Because it is. In today's episode, host James Cox—a self‑described “handicapped” presenter with cerebral palsy—welcomes the fiercely honest and soulful artist Stella Soleil (formerly Estella Asole, aka Sister Soleil). From the icy streets of Chicago to the sun‑kissed suburbs of Lexington, SC, they explore how music has been a lifeline through depression, trauma, and artistic evolution. What you'll hear:A candid back‑story: Stella's journey from ballet prodigy at three, through an indie‑rock, post‑punk Chicago scene, to the industrial‑pop persona Sister Soleil and her eventual reinvention as Stella Soleil after a turbulent stint with Universal Music. The first spark of songwriting: The acapella “Red” that finally found its shape when a late‑producer friend added piano chords, marking her true arrival as a songwriter.Music‑therapy moments: A group‑therapy Pink Floyd session that illustrated “healing frequencies,” plus a dive into divine harmonies, and how those concepts fuel her upcoming love‑and‑joy concept album.Tech & ethics: The rise of AI‑driven composition, copyright gray zones, and Stella's own workaround—a voice‑to‑MIDI tool that lets her compose without learning every instrument.Behind the scenes: The story behind her new single “Hello,” its 14‑year gestation, collaboration with producer John Fryer, and plans for a limited‑edition colored‑vinyl release.Personal quirks & inspirations: From Yorkie‑Morkie dogs that think they're pit bulls, to early‑morning meditations, true‑crime documentaries, and her all‑time favorite voices—Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins), Chino Moreno (Deftones), Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), and the haunting female vocalist on Pink Floyd's “Great Gig in the Sky.”All of this is framed by James's mission to prove that when words fall short, a well‑crafted song can lift us out of the darkness. Whether you're a struggling songwriter, a mental‑health advocate, or simply a lover of great music, this conversation offers practical insights, heartfelt anecdotes, and a reminder that you are worthy, you are heard, and you are never alone.Stay tuned, press play, and let the music speak.

RJM's Ron Menelli: The MIDI Wizard Behind the Pros' Pedalboards Description Ron Menelli from RJM Music joins Blake Wyland to tell the long, nerdy, wildly practical story behind one of the most essential “behind the curtain” brands in modern guitar rigs. Ron walks through his early days building circuits from Radio Shack notebooks, studying electrical engineering and computer science, and eventually bailing on the corporate telecom world to build something of his own. That leap leads to RJM's first big breakthrough: the AmpGizmo, a solution that brought MIDI control to the era of giant channel-switching amps with giant multi-button footswitches. From there, Ron explains how RJM evolved from amp control into full rig command centers, including the RG16 and the Mastermind ecosystem, and why products like the PBC-6X became the best-selling “brain” for players who want one button to handle loops, pedal order, and MIDI commands in a single move. You also get a real talk segment on the business side: what it's like building gear for a small, pro-focused niche (where your customers are the artists everyone else watches), why Ron intentionally keeps RJM small, and what he'd tell anyone trying to start a pedal or guitar company today. Plus: a deep dive into MIDI 2.0, why it's taking forever, and why the promise of “plug and play” control could finally make MIDI less terrifying for normal humans. Then we wrap with the essentials: favorite Boss pedals (OD-1 love), a Rush-inspired tap-dance origin story… and Chicago thin-crust pizza supremacy. Episode 359: Midlife Muscle, Mindset & The M-Factor with Alicia Erickson This week on You Are Not Broken, I'm joined by the strong, grounded, and refreshingly honest Alicia Erickson for a conversation about midlife reinvention — from hormones to heavy lifting. We talk about the real-life impact of perimenopause (and why projects like The M Factor: Shredding the Silence on Menopause matter), Alicia's decision to get sober at 45, and what happens when women stop shrinking and start building — muscle, boundaries, and belief in themselves. Alicia shares her journey into strength training, progressive overload, and even stepping on a bikini competition stage — not for validation, but for growth. We break down body recomposition (yes, you can build muscle and lose fat at the same time), the critical role of sleep, and how hormone replacement therapy can dramatically shift quality of life in midlife. The production process centred on preserving the integrity of the original field recording from Lokhim, Nepal, while building a modern arrangement around it. Spectral Layers was utilised to isolate the vocal line from the background noise and original percussion, allowing the singer's performance to remain the focal point without destructive editing. Once isolated, Melodyne and a custom built MIDI analysis tool were used to map the vocal's intonation, identifying the scale to guide the new instrumentation.Structured with a traditional verse and chorus arrangement, the track blends this preserved archival audio with contemporary sound design. The rhythm was programmed with the Air DrumSynth and Synplant provides melodic textures that complement the vocal. The atmosphere is heavily shaped by a number of Eventide effects — including Blackhole, UltraTap, and Physion Mk II — with Temperance Pro transforming processed artifacts of the vocal into a background drone, all arranged in Ableton Live and finalised with iZotope Ozone.Man singing with percussion reimagined by Karhide.———Part of the project A Century of Sounds, reimagining 100 sounds covering 100 years from the collections of the Pitt Rivers Museum at the University of Oxford. This is a process-based piece, exploiting the conceptual connection with water. I applied a series of transformations to the original cassette recording, beginning with chopping and looping fragments of the sample, which I "played" back on a MIDI keyboard. I then collage the results, recording them on a multitrack cassette tape, next playing back and manipulating those recordings via a variable speed tape deck. Finally, those recordings were played back via a transducer affixed to a jug of water, and recorded with a hydrophone. The final composition slowly brings in various iterations towards the end of my composition, ending with a small unprocessed fragment of the original.Bayaka group water drumming reimagined by Joseph Sannicandro.———Part of the project A Century of Sounds, reimagining 100 sounds covering 100 years from the collections of the Pitt Rivers Museum at the University of Oxford. This week on You Are Not Broken, I sit down with breast oncologist and historian Dr. Elizabeth Comen to talk about her powerful book All in Her Head and the long, complicated history of how women's health has been misunderstood, minimized, and medicalized. If you've ever been told your symptoms are anxiety… stress… hormones… or just part of being a woman — this episode is for you. We explore the historical roots of dismissal in women's healthcare and how those patterns still show up today, especially in cancer care. Dr. Comen walks us through how breast cancer treatment has evolved, what we've gotten right, what we've gotten wrong, and why quality of life must be part of the conversation — not an afterthought. We also talk about: Why women's pain has historically been labeled “hysteria” How medical bias still affects diagnosis and treatment The real tension between longevity and quality of life Hormonal therapies in breast cancer — and how nuance gets lost Why advocacy matters more than ever The double-edged sword of social media and AI in health information How understanding medical history helps us build better medicine today This episode isn't about blaming the past. It's about understanding it — so we stop repeating it. Because when women are dismissed, care suffers. And when women are informed, everything changes. If you care about evidence-based medicine, health equity, and empowering women with real information — this is a must-listen. In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the debut Bat for Lashes album, Fur and Gold, we take a detailed look at how it was made. Natasha Khan had grown up in Hertfordshire, England and studied art at the University of Brighton. After graduating, she taught as a schoolteacher while writing songs and performing as Bat for Lashes. Her manager, Dick O'Dell, got her a publishing deal and connected her with producer David Kosten to work on some demos. The first Bat for Lashes single, “The Wizard” was released on her own label in early 2006. After signing with Echo, Natasha and David began working on a full-length album together at Jacobs studio in the Surrey countryside. They brought in other musicians, including Abi Fry and Caroline Weeks, who had been playing as a group with Natasha at this time. Fur and Gold was eventually released in 2006. In this episode, Natasha Khan and David Kosten have an in-depth conversation where they revisit their initial collaboration that continued long after this record. David shares how he was first asked to co-write with Natasha until he realized she had no interest in co-writing and already had a fully formed vision for this album. Natasha describes wanting to create the world of the album and use unconventional recording techniques, such as recording in a forest and under blankets, to try to achieve the sound she had imagined. Even though Natasha had a fondness for lo-fi MIDI sounds, she worked with David to craft a unique hybrid of well-recorded acoustic instruments with lower quality digital components. The result was the Mercury Prize-nominated Fur and Gold, which launched Natasha's music into the world. From a cinematic approach of method acting and practical effects, to a shared love of girl groups, to David finding a CD-R meant for another producer, to a memorable tour with Devendra Banhart, to taking inspiration from contemporaries Cat Power, Joanna Newsom and Gwen Stefani, to being averse to anything trip-hop, to having high standards and holding the vision, we'll hear the stories around how the album came together.

By his 20s, he was working as a sound designer for Akai, Roland, Emu/Ensoniq, eventually signing on exclusively with the latter. Later, due to a growing demand for software instruments and libraries, Eddie began developing libraries for various software manufacturers, including Native Instruments, Kiesel, Sound Effects Library, Rob Papen, Arturia, and Propellerheads.During this time, he trained in music production. He soon gained several prominent contracts working with some notable artistes such as Busta Rhymes, Greensleeves, 9 Bar, SFP, Sleeveless, Chris Campbell and Gam Productions. He contracted to Island Records and Chrysalis as a producer and remixer, and was commissioned to write the score for Macbeth that ran at 2 Way Mirror at Alexander Palace for the Cambridge Shakespeare Company. This led to him offering educational workshops and classes, and becoming a contributing creator and Forum moderator for Sound On Sound.Recently, he was invited by the Recording Academy to become a professional member, approved educator, and mentor for their member base. Eddie now concentrates on providing private sound design and mixing/production tuition, and creating content for Sound On Sound magazine.https://eddiebazil.co.uk/Catch more shows on our other podcast channels: https://www.soundonsound.com/sos-podcasts
Moritz Simon Geist is a music producer and researcher working with sound, robotics and algorithms. Beginning his academic career in semiconductor sciences as a PhD student, Geist made a career shift to focus on art and music, where he now merges sound with robotics and algorithms. His approach to electronic music, which involves creating sound through mechanical robots, has earned him international recognition. In 2012, Geist's first work, the "Drum Robot MR-808," went viral, and he has since explored the sound making and producing of electronic music with robots and mechanics as well as releasing many influential and viral works. Geist's compositions are influenced by a broad range of musical styles, including various electronic music genres and classical music, creating a unique and experimental sound. Over the years, he has collaborated with a range of renowned artists, including Mouse On Mars, Tyondai Braxton, Robert Lippok, and Thieß Mynther. His work has been showcased at many international venues and events such as the Venice Biennale, South by Southwest (SXSW), the Philharmonie de Paris, and the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg. He has also presented his work in Japan, Australia, and South Korea. From 2017 - 2020 he held a master class at the NYU Berlin. His contributions to the field have been recognized with numerous awards, such as the ISEA Conference 2024, the Working Grant ZER01NE Seoul in 2023, German Pop Music Prize 2022, and the VIA VUT Award in 2019. Life and education Geist has a classical music education on piano, clarinet and classic music, but turned to electronic, punk and noise music in his student years. After finishing his diploma in electrical engineering and starting his PhD in a research facility, he turned to work as a freelance artist full-time in 2012. Works In 2012 Geist build his first robotic music instrument the “MR-808”, designed after the classic electronic drum machine “TR-808”. The “MR-808” features 12 drum instruments which are beaten by small robots, such as a snare, toms or bass drum. The instrument is controlled with MIDI, and can be played by the audience. The work gained a lot of attention online and was displayed at many occasions. The installation won the Cynetart Prize 2014 and is part of the touring exhibition 'Electro' by the Philharmonie de Paris alongside works of Jeff Mills and Jean-Michel Jarre. Tripods One (2017) In 2017 Geist released the installation “Tripods One”, which is a small robotic music system featuring five robotic percussive robots. In an interview for the magazine Fast Company Geist states he wanted to create DIY futuristic instruments which have something new to them, and which don't reference something that already exists. The installation won the Visual Music Award 2017 and was nominated for the design price of saxonia 2018. Album “Robotic Electronic Music” (2018) In 2018 Geist released his debut Album “Robotic Electronic Music” distributed by Kompakt Distribution and produced by Andi Thoma from the band Mouse On Mars. On the 8-Track Album, Geist used only physical instruments, and it was sold with the claim of being the first techno album entirely played by robots. Collaboration In 2014, Geist started a collaboration with the electronic duo Mouse On Mars. They played together at international occasions, such as the Moog Festival or at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg. In 2018, the Mouse on Mars Album Dimensional People was released, for which Geist built a custom made robotic music system. With this system it is possible to trigger various objects and percussion elements with MIDI. Exhibitions Since 2016, Geist has exhibited several works at museums, for example at the AIx Music exhibition at the Ars Electronica Center or at the Science Museum Milano. In 2019, Geist was nominated for the VIA/VUT Award alongside Holly Herndon, who won the title. Since 2020, Geist runs a studio also doing corporate works in Dresden, Germany

There are a few technical difficulties this week, the internet was not our friend. We appreciate your patience :)____________________________________________________________This week we're exploring Strum Plate by Gulf Coast Synthesis, a free MIDI effect that separates what you play from when you play it.Inspired by the touchplate interface of the Omnichord, Strum Plate lets you hold chords with one hand while manually strumming notes into existence using a mouse or pitch wheel. It's less about precision and more about feel, gesture, and discovering new musical behaviours.Rather than reviewing features, this episode is about experimentation. We'll be pairing Strum Plate with different synths and sounds, pushing it in unexpected directions, and seeing what kinds of rhythms, textures, and performance ideas emerge along the way.If you're curious about alternative MIDI workflows, playful sound design tools, or finding inspiration in free plugins, this one's for you.Check out the Strum Plate Here:https://www.gulfcoastsynthesis.com/strum-plate.htmlLars Haur has a new track out. This week I sit down with Autumn Calabrese to talk about fitness, mindset, and stress management—especially as they relate to women in midlife. We explore how hormonal changes can affect energy, recovery, motivation, and overall health, and why many women find that the fitness strategies that once worked no longer feel effective or sustainable. We also discuss how women's fitness culture has evolved over time, shifting away from extremes and toward a more balanced, realistic approach that prioritizes consistency over perfection. This episode highlights why managing stress is just as important as working out, and how nutrition, quality sleep, and community support play foundational roles in long-term wellness. At its core, this conversation is an invitation to reframe fitness as a tool for resilience, strength, and vitality—not punishment—and to encourage women to embrace change, stay consistent, and prioritize their health through every season of midlife. Fitness helps support warmth, energy, and resilience, especially during winter Mindset is a major driver of sustainable fitness and health habits Stress management is essential for overall health in midlife Hormonal changes can significantly impact women's physical and mental well-being Fitness culture is evolving toward balance rather than extremes Consistency in workouts leads to better long-term health outcomes Nutrition is a cornerstone of a healthy lifestyle Quality sleep is critical for recovery and overall well-being Embracing change can transform the midlife experience Community and accountability enhance motivation and long-term commitment Autumn's IG BODI platform To my fellow clinicians: listen to the You Are Not Broken podcast on Pinnacle's network to earn FREE CME credit Listen to my Tedx Talk: Why we need adult sex ed Take my Adult Sex Ed Master Class: My Website Interested in my sexual health and hormone clinic? There are times when this option makes sense but it is important to know these hormones are different types, dosages, and come with different risk factors and are formulated for very different goals. Oftentimes they are a starting place instead of beginning HRT when a women enters perimenopause. It's important to know what your goals are during this phase of life, how birth control options may fit in and when they are clearly the wrong choice. In this episode of the You Are Not Broken podcast, Dr. Kelly Casperson sits down with Dr. Gabrielle Lyon for a powerful, science-forward conversation about why muscle is the organ of longevity—and why women have been taught to focus on the wrong things for decades. They unpack how an overemphasis on fat loss has distracted from the far more important goal of preserving and building muscle, especially as we age. Dr. Lyon explains anabolic resistance, protein needs across the lifespan, and why mindset—not willpower—is often the missing link in women's fitness and health outcomes. This episode reframes strength training, nutrition, and supplements as essential medical tools—not aesthetic choices—and delivers a clear message: women deserve better education about their bodies and the confidence to train for strength, not shrinkage. Why muscle is critical for metabolic health, protection, and aging well How the obsession with fat loss has undermined women's long-term health The role of mindset in body recomposition and sustainable fitness Why protein intake matters more than calorie restriction What anabolic resistance is—and why protein needs increase with age How the “fit fat” phenotype challenges outdated health metrics When continuous glucose monitoring is helpful (and when it's not) Why many women over 65 are protein deficient—and why that matters The role of supplements like creatine and essential amino acids Why strength training is a non-negotiable for women's health Muscle is not about appearance—it's about independence, resilience, and metabolic health. Women have been under-informed, under-fueled, and under-trained for far too long. Prioritizing strength is one of the most powerful health decisions a woman can make at any age. In this episode of the You Are Not Broken, Dr. Kelly Casperson is joined by Joanna Strober, CEO of MIDI Health, for a direct and hopeful conversation about menopause care, hormone therapy, and what women actually need from the healthcare system. Joanna shares the story behind building MIDI Health and why access, education, and properly trained providers are essential to closing the massive gaps in menopause care. Despite the data, only a small fraction of eligible women are receiving hormone therapy—leaving millions undertreated, dismissed, or told to simply “push through.” This episode tackles outdated narratives around menopause, reframes hormones as foundational to long-term health and longevity, and makes a strong case for advocacy—by clinicians, companies, and women themselves. How MIDI Health is delivering hormone therapy to 25,000 women each week Why only ~5% of women over 40 are currently using hormone therapy The critical need for education and training in menopause care How hormone therapy can help prevent downstream health issues Why menopause care doesn't end when periods stop What's broken in women's healthcare—and how to fix it Real patient success stories that show what's possible The role of hormones in longevity, vitality, and overall health Why advocacy is essential for meaningful change MIDI Health's vision to become a trusted, national brand for women's health Menopause is not the end of care—it's the beginning of a new phase that deserves attention, education, and evidence-based treatment. Hormone therapy isn't about vanity or “anti-aging”; it's about giving women access to the healthcare they've always deserved.
