On this week's show, we bring you Lessons from the Foothills: Berea College and Its Unique Role in America, an address by author Gretchen Dykstra given to the Filson Historical Society in Old Louisville on January 28, 2025. In 1859, a mob of sixty-five prominent armed men rode into Berea, Kentucky, and forced the closure of its integrated one-room schoolhouse. Founded by Kentucky-born abolitionist John Gregg Fee, the school was open to anyone, regardless of their race or gender—a notion that horrified white supremacists. The mob evicted thirty-six community members, including Fee's family, but Fee and the others returned to Berea in 1864 and reestablished the institution, still committed to educating Appalachia's most vulnerable populations. In Lessons from the Foothills, Gretchen Dykstra profiles modern Berea College with its rich and beloved history. This book is the first to focus on contemporary Berea and its eight Great Commitments—the principles and practices that provide clear aspirations for the college and its community. Each chapter functions as a deep dive into the history, practice, and significance of one Great Commitment, from providing opportunity for the most marginalized, to the college's high academic standards and its commitment to environmental sustainability. The college has pledged to "provide an educational opportunity for students of all races, primarily from Appalachia, who have great promise and limited economic resources." To achieve this goal, the college eliminated tuition in 1892 and it also provides jobs for students to assist with living expenses. Drawn from interviews with a range of members of the Berea community, including alumni, students, faculty, and staff, Lessons from the Foothills is an engaging portrait of a unique and historic institution and its enduring commitment to nurture and support academic excellence and service. Gretchen Dykstra, author of Echoes from Wuhan: The Past as Prologue and Civic Pioneers: Local Stories from a Changing America, 1895–1915, and coauthor of Pinery Boys: Songs and Songcatching in the Lumberjack Era, has written articles for several publications, including the New York Times and California History. She lives in Haverford, Pennsylvania. This program was sponsored in honor of the Association for Teaching Black History in Kentucky, the Thomas D. Clark Foundation, in addition to UPK and Berea College. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Robert Blake Whitehill, author of the book Deadrise. Robert was born into a Quaker family in Mardela Springs, just outside Salisbury on Maryland's Eastern Shore peninsula. He grew up sailing the Chesapeake Bay, and one of her most beautiful tributaries, the Chester River. After graduating from Westtown School, Whitehill stayed in Pennsylvania to earn his B.A. in creative writing at Haverford and Bryn Mawr Colleges. Later he trained as an actor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, and at The Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in New York City. He is the author of the award-winning, critically acclaimed, multi-category, international Kindle bestselling Ben Blackshaw thrillers, which currently has six titles, and audiobooks in the works in German and English. Whitehill lives in New Jersey with his wife and son. When he wasn't sailing, or knocking around the sky in a Cessna 152, Whitehill published several articles about his home waters in Chesapeake Bay Magazine. He is also the managing partner of Calaveras Media LLC, a feature film and television development company. He is a member of SAG-AFTRA, International Thriller Writers, GPA Aviation Club, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, and served for a number of years as an EMT-B with the Montclair Ambulance Unit. In my book review, I stated Deadrise, a thriller, is Book #1 in The Ben Blackshaw Series. If you love a Tom Clancy kind of novel, then you will love this series. We meet Ben underwater - clamming in the Chesapeake Bay near Smith Island. However, instead of finding clams, he finds a sunken boat, 19 boxes of gold bouillon, a dirty bomb, and his dead father - a man he hasn't seen in 15 years. His clamming partner, Knocker Ellis, isn't as surprised as he should be, nor are the other inhabitants of the island. When Maynard Chalk learns his deal has gone sour, and that Ben's father is to blame, he comes to the island to get his money and the bomb - but Ben has other plans. I loved Robert's characters, and especially loved that Smith Island with all her quirky inhabitants was as much of a characters as Ben. If you love a good thriller with all the twists and turns, and great characters, then you will want to read Deadrise. In this episode, I was lucky enough to interview Adam Trachtman, Director and Owner of Lucid Circus. Adam's upbringing in Haverford, Pennsylvania, and his formative years at a creative and performing arts high school in Philadelphia laid the groundwork for his journey. With a blend of analytical precision inherited from his mother and a risk-taking spirit from his father, Adam embarked on a bold move to the Czech Republic at just 19 years old, driven by a desire to immerse himself in Europe's cultural tapestry. Upon landing in Prague, Adam's entrepreneurial instincts kicked in as he cofounded Lucid Circus with Ezra Cohen, their parallel paths converging from Philadelphia to Prague. Amid the dot-com bubble burst, they smartly combined their firms, blending design and development talents to overcome hurdles. This synergy enabled them to secure clients like AOL and MTV, setting the stage for Lucid Circus's ascent in the digital realm. Beyond the boardroom, Adam's creative vision finds expression in his graphic novel, "Immersion," a labor of love blending artistry with cutting-edge technology. Leveraging neural style transfer, Adam transforms his experiences into a visually captivating narrative, bridging languages and cultures. With "Immersion" gaining traction internationally, Adam's journey epitomizes the entrepreneurial spirit intertwined with a passion for innovation and storytelling.Step into the vibrant streets of Prague and Join us as we explore the intersection of art and technology with Adam Trachtman on The First Customer!Guest Info:LucidCircushttp://lucidcircus.comAdam Trachtman's LinkedInhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/adam10/Connect with Jay on LinkedInhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/jayaigner/The First Customer Youtube Channelhttps://www.youtube.com/@thefirstcustomerpodcastThe First Customer podcast websitehttps://www.firstcustomerpodcast.comFollow The First Customer on LinkedInhttp://www.linkedin.com/company/the-first-customer-podcast/

Doug Brunt— New York Times Best Selling Author and Historian—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss his new book: “The Mysterious Case of Rudolf Diesel: Genius, Power, and Deception on the Eve of World War I.” Brunt writes: “After rising from an impoverished European childhood, Diesel had become a multi-millionaire with his powerful engine that did not require expensive petroleum-based fuel. In doing so, he became not only an international celebrity but also the enemy of two extremely powerful men: Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany (who wanted to use the engine to power a fleet of submarines that would finally allow him to challenge Great Britain's Royal Navy) and John D. Rockefeller (the founder of Standard Oil and the richest man in the world). At the outset of this new age of electricity and oil, Europe stood on the precipice of war. Rudolf Diesel grew increasingly concerned about Germany's rising nationalism and military spending. The inventor was on his way to London to establish a new company that would help Britain improve its failing submarine program when he disappeared.” On Wednesday, October 11th Brunt will take part in a moderated conversation in Haverford, PA. The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 1: 3:05pm- On Saturday, Palestinian militants broke through barriers separating Gaza from Israel—raiding Israeli towns, killing nearly 1,000 civilians with another 150 civilians having been kidnapped by Hamas, according to estimates. President of Israel Isaac Herzog said of the attack, “not since the Holocaust have so many Jews been killed in one day.” Meanwhile, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed that in response, Israel “will exact a price that will be remembered by [Hama], and Israel's other enemies, for decades to come.” 3:20pm- According to reporting from Summer Said, Benoit Faucon, and Stephen Kalin of The Wall Street Journal, “Iranian security officials helped plan Hamas's Saturday surprise attack on Israel and gave the green light for the assault at a meeting in Beirut last Monday, according to senior members of Hamas and Hezbollah, another Iran-backed militant group. Officers of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had worked with Hamas since August to devise the air, land and sea incursions.” You can read the full report here: https://www.wsj.com/world/middle-east/iran-israel-hamas-strike-planning-bbe07b25 3:30pm- During a press conference on Tuesday, the Biden Administration's National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan was asked about the $6 billion recently given to Iran in exchange for the release of several U.S. hostages. Sullivan denied that any of the money had been spent—however, isn't money fungible? Jim Geraghty writes: “the fact that if Iran knows it is going to get access to $6 billion in frozen funds for humanitarian spending, it can reallocate money that it was going to spend on those humanitarian costs to supporting Hamas and other terror groups.” Geraghty called on the Biden Administration to “refreeze” the billions provided to Iran. 3:45pm- While speaking at a rally in Waterloo, Iowa over the weekend, Republican candidate for president Donald Trump condemned the Hamas attacks on Israel and slammed the Biden Administration for providing billions of dollars to Iran—explaining that he would not be surprised if part of the “tremendous wealth they just accumulated” went towards acts of aggression against Israel. 3:55pm- During an appearance on Fox News, Senator Lindsey Graham proposed that in response to Hamas attacks on Israel, and reports that Iran helped plan the attacks, the United States should destroy oil fields in Iran and bring “the war to the Ayatollah's backyard.” 4:00pm- Dr. Victoria Coates— Former Deputy National Security Advisor & the Vice President of the Davis Institute for National Security and Foreign Policy at The Heritage Foundation—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss the horrific weekend attacks on Israel orchestrated by Hamas terrorists. What will happen next? And at what level was Iran involved? Dr. Coates is the author of “David's Sling: A History of Democracy in Ten Works of Art.” You can find her book here: https://www.amazon.com/Davids-Sling-History-Democracy-Works/dp/1594037213 4:30pm- According to Brittany Bernstein of National Review, “[t]hen-Vice President Joe Biden's office exchanged 19,335 emails with Hunter Biden's investment firm Rosemont Seneca, a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)… The emails call into question President Biden's repeated claims that he never discussed business with his son. Former Hunter Biden business associate Devon Archer previously testified that then–Vice President Biden joined at least 20 phone calls and/or in-person meetings with Hunter's foreign business associates during their time working together.” You can Bernstein's full article here: https://www.nationalreview.com/news/then-vp-joe-bidens-office-exchanged-nearly-20000-emails-with-hunters-investment-firm/ 4:50pm- During an interview with Chris Wallace, 78-year-old Thursday Night Football play-by-play announcer Al Michaels revealed that he has never knowingly eaten a vegetable in his life! Dom welcomes Danielle Vitale, who serves on the Haverford School District Board of School Directors, to the Dom Giordano Program after she spoke out about the decision to pull To Kill a Mockingbird from district curricula. Vitale as just a member of the PTO when she found out that the book was removed during the pandemic, ran and won a seat on the school board and found that the American classic was removed after meetings with an outside consulting agency. Vitale explains that the district called in Sage Wellness after a handful of student complaints about content inside the book, claiming that it made them feel ‘uncomfortable,' which led to lessons for teachers about the book's racism and an eventual ban from the schools. Vitale takes us inside conversations shared with teachers who revealed that comments made by the district and the organization were inaccurate, taking listeners behind the shadowy curtain behind the books withdrawal from lesson plans. This is another super special interview episode for me! Jamie and I met in 2007 when I was a college soccer recruit at Haverford. We then played 4 years of soccer together, started a rec team when we both moved to Philly, both completed a PhD in different fields, and now are both working in industry. Jamie has always been a badass woman in science and someone to look up to as she reaches all of her goals. I'm proud to call her a friend and I hope you enjoy hearing about her journey and the wisdom she has garnered. Tune in wherever you get your podcasts! Cory Walts was hired as the Director of Strength & Conditioning at the University of Pennsylvania in April 2019. Walts came to Penn from nearby Haverford College, where he spent 12 years as the head strength and conditioning coach and fitness center director. During that time, he designed and implemented year-round sports performance programs for a majority of Haverford's 23 varsity sports and several club sports teams. He utilized a holistic approach to create robust individuals and teams, focusing on physiological qualities (movement skill, strength, power, speed, agility, and energy systems); psychological qualities (growth mindset, grit, and internal motivation through the use of education, autonomy and accountability); and lifestyle qualities (positive habit formation in sleep, nutrition, hydration, and mindfulness). During Walts' tenure, a number of Haverford teams reached unprecedented heights. The volleyball program won three consecutive Centennial Conference titles under Walts' guidance and reached the NCAA Regional semifinals in 2014, while men's soccer advanced to the 2015 NCAA Elite Eight. From the spring season, baseball won three conference titles, advanced to the NCAA Regionals and had two student-athletes drafted in the eighth round of the MLB Draft, while softball advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals for the first time in 2016. Haverford also had 12 student-athletes selected as National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and EAS Sports All-Americans during his last five years on campus. In addition to his work with Haverford student-athletes, Walts served as director of the Joe Schwartz '83 Memorial 3K Run/Walk, which raised more than $75,000 for ALS research and had more than 2,000 participants from the campus community. He taught multiple classes within Haverford's Physical Education program and co-created the Healthy Mind/Healthy Body and Employee Wellness Committees, multi-department initiatives aimed at enhancing student and employee wellness respectively. Walts is co-Head of the Philadelphia Area Strength & Conditioning Association, which fosters relationships and develops knowledge specific to the profession of Strength & Conditioning for those in and around the Philadelphia area. He also is a member of West Chester University's Exercise Science Advisory Board and oversees the Strength and Conditioning program for the Marian Anderson Recreation Center in South Philadelphia. In 2013, Walts was a finalist for the NSCA College Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year Award. Walts graduated magna cum laude from Ithaca College in 2005 with a major in clinical exercise science and played four years for the football program. Following internships with the strength and conditioning departments at Cornell University and the Buffalo Bills, he earned his master's degree in kinesiology from the University of Maryland in 2007. Walts also worked with the Terps' strength and conditioning department during his two years in College Park, serving as the strength and conditioning coach for men's tennis and assisted with football, men's and women's basketball, and men's and women's swimming. Walts is a Certified (with Distinction) Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and a Certified Level 1 Sports Performance Coach with USA Weightlifting. He also is Precision Nutrition Level 1 certified and certified in CPR/First Aid and AED by the American Red Cross.
