Jonah Ray lives in Los Angeles. We used to work in a record store together in Venice Beach. He's is on tour working on material for a new comedy record. He was nice enough to invite me backstage at The Fremont Abbey in Seattle to record a podcast episode. He sings a few Mel Brooks songs and a "Weird" Al cover from his new album on Asian Man Records. We talk about old days and new days and MST3K. Jonah, Cash and Neil make a podcast called Jonah Raydio that I love and you should listen to next. Thanks for listening. The 2020 election is almost a year and a half away, but the race is already on. There are two dozen Democrats, and one Republican, lining up to challenge President Donald Trump. And the news cycle is dominated by big questions about who can win, and how. So Crosscut gathered a panel of pundits from the Seattle area to weigh in on the big issues, assess the candidates and speculate on Trump’s chances for a second term. Featuring conservative talk radio host Michael Medved, former chair of the Washington State Republican Party Chris Vance, political scientist Christopher Parker and Sharon Mast, who serves as the secretary of the Western States Caucus of the Democratic National Committee. This conversation was recorded on June 13, 2019 at Fremont Abbey as part of Crosscut's News & Brews series.Note: This episode contains adult language. We recorded a live show on March 14th at the Fremont Abbey following a different format that we think you’ll enjoy. We had a panel moderated by Amanda Carter Gomes of The Fold Mag with guests Shelby Earl, and Joy Pearson of Lenore. We explored the complex, but joyous world of musician moms & shared a few tunes to boot. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, so bring a glass, or bottle, of wine, we won’t judge and enjoy the show!
Citizen University TV makes a stop at the Fremont Abbey for a special presentation of Civic Saturday. In his "civic sermon," Eric Liu reminds us, "It's a Free Country." But when he explores that notion it reveals much about who we are as a nation. As Alexis de Tocqueville noted in "Democracy in America," we are both "independent and weak." Liu adds context to that belief by discussing three themes that are deeply connected: freedom, loneliness and help. His thoughts are both eye-opening and uplifting. Civic Saturday is a civic analogue to a faith gathering that celebrates the American civic tradition with an address by Liu, readings, song and reflection. The unique civic experience aims to instill a spirit of shared purpose - with liberty, equality and self-government at the heart.
