Stacy Palmer leads The Chronicle of Philanthropy, the leading journal in the world of nonprofits. In this Blue Sky conversation, she talks about the evolution of nonprofits into sophisticated organizations that do remarkable work around the world. She describes the role of donors large and small, and how they're helping address challenges created by cuts in government funding. Stacy also shares her belief that nothing gets done in this space without a healthy dose of optimism. Chapters: 02:04 Origins of the Chronicle of Philanthropy Stacy Palmer discusses the founding of The Chronicle of Philanthropy, explaining how the professionalization and growth of the nonprofit sector created a need for a dedicated publication. 05:09 Motivation and Evolution of Philanthropy Stacy shares what inspires her in philanthropy, emphasizing the drive to make a difference and adapt to new global challenges like climate change. 07:14 Mega-Philanthropists and Giving Trends Stacy discusses the significant growth of wealth and the rise of mega-philanthropists like Bill and Melinda Gates, who are making record-setting donations during their lifetimes. She also notes the concerning trend of a precipitous drop in the percentage of Americans who give to charity, now less than 50%. 09:50 Ted Turner's Impact on Giving Bill Burke recalls Ted Turner's billion-dollar donation to the UN and his challenge to other billionaires, including Bill Gates, to give more. Stacy confirms Turner's inspiration for the mega-philanthropy boom and the Chronicle's tradition of ranking top givers, an idea Ted championed. 12:15 American Philanthropy vs. Government Aid Stacy explains the strong American tradition of charitable giving and volunteering, partly due to fewer government social services compared to European countries. She addresses whether individual giving can fill gaps left by government cuts, noting that while people respond generously, philanthropic funds are tiny compared to government provisions. 14:05 Nonprofits in Media and Entrepreneurship Stacy highlights the innovation possible in nonprofits and emphasizes that optimism is crucial for founders, who are a form of entrepreneur believing change is possible even when facing long-term, complicated problems. 18:02 Optimism in Nonprofit Work She notes that almost all people in this field are optimists, tempered by reality, who believe individuals and collective efforts can make a difference. 20:09 Nonprofits Now Podcast & Burnout Stacy discusses her podcast, Nonprofits Now, which focuses on advice from nonprofit leaders to combat burnout, a common issue in the field. 25:01 Challenges and Volunteerism Stacy addresses the inherent grind of nonprofit work due to long-term, complex problems and the perception that it's not a 'serious' career. 31:37 MacKenzie Scott's Philanthropic Model Stacy details MacKenzie Scott's unique philanthropic approach, characterized by surprise, no-strings-attached gifts to often overlooked organizations. She highlights Scott's rigorous vetting process and the transformative impact of unrestricted funds, which combat nonprofit burnout caused by restrictive grants and overhead limitations. 39:39 Future Trends in Philanthropy Stacy forecasts a surge in charitable giving as communities experience the impact of service cuts, driving both individuals and foundations to step up. 45:39 Conclusion and Outreach Stacy Palmer encourages listeners to find the "Nonprofits Now" podcast and visit philanthropy.com to learn more about the Chronicle of Philanthropy. Bill Burke thanks her for her inspiring insights and commitment to optimism in the nonprofit world, urging listeners to rate and subscribe to the Blue Sky Podcast.

What if the cancer treatment that works best is the one pharmaceutical companies can't profit from? What if one of the cancer treatments that works best is the one the pharmaceutical companies can't profit from?!Dr. Katie sits down again with Professor Thomas Seyfried to explore why the medical system resists alternative approaches to a disease that claims over 1,700 lives daily in the U.S., and what's actually driving cancer at the cellular level. They reveal a specific therapeutic strategy that targets both fuels cancer cells depend on to survive.Dr. Seyfried explains how cancer isn't the genetic lottery you've been led to believe, it's a metabolic condition with a metabolic solution. You'll learn why your body's normal cells thrive on completely different fuel than cancer cells do, and how a compound called DON (a glutamine antagonist) combined with therapeutic ketosis creates conditions where healthy cells flourish while cancer cells can't survive. Crystal Skillman is an internationally award-winning playwright, fictional podcast writer, and comic book author who has written for Stories Podcast (Wondery Kids), Girl Tales, Adventure Time comics, as well as Marvel comics. In addition to Open and The Rocket Men, Crystal is the dramatist of RAIN AND ZOE SAVE THE WORLD (premiered in the UK in 2022) and the NYTimes Critics' Pick plays GEEK, CUT, and KING KIRBY which you can listen to on Broadway Podcast Network. We talk about the big issues of history, war, justice and art. We focus on her new play 'The Rocket Men.' The Rocket Men is a unique theatrical experience that carries us through time in a blink of an eye to present the story of the German "Rocket Men" who used their scientific skills to flee Nazi Germany and settle in the most unlikely of places...North Alabama. These men form the backbone of NASA's rocketry program. In this modern play, women (employees at Space Camp), step into roles playing the men focusing on Heinz- Hermann Koelle, a lesser-known young German rocketeer, who joined this "Operation Paperclip" team years later; Rocket Men explores the dynamic relationship of Wernher von Braun and Koelle as these two have set their sights on getting us to the Moon and beyond. But as the play counts down to the launch of Apollo 11, Koelle is befriended by a Jewish engineer hell-bent on exposing the truth: the Germans' technology is based on the V-2 rockets built by slave labor.Played by six female-identifying women who force us to theatrically re-examine this explosive story - still widely not known in America - “The Rocket Men” asks who gets to be remembered in the history books, and why?

Ep. 941 - There may be no better place for Kyler Murray to make his return than AT&T Stadium, where he has never lost in eight games as a starting quarterback; and that covers high school, college, and the NFL. If Murray does start - head coach Jonathan Gannon said they're preparing for just that - against the Dallas Cowboys on ‘Monday Night Football,' then that may be just the shot in the arm the Cardinals need to begin to dig themselves out of their 2-5 hole. Murray's return might not be the only return. Craig Grialou and Zach Gershman discuss the possibility of both Garrett Williams and Walter Nolen III playing this week. Also, Kyle Youmans, TV host/reporter for dallascowboys-dot-com, joins the show to further preview the matchup.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Editor David Horovitz joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. The IDF announced this morning that the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip is now once again in effect, following “a series of significant strikes” targeting dozens of Hamas targets and operatives. The strikes came after Palestinian operatives carried out an attack on troops stationed in the Rafah area of the southern Gaza Strip on Tuesday, killing soldier Master Sgt. (res.) Yona Efraim Feldbaum. This strike on IDF soldiers, along with Hamas’s failure to return the deceased Israeli hostages -- even faking the recovery of one slain hostage -- led to Israel's retaliation, which, according to the Hamas-run Health Ministry, killed over 100. Horovitz weighs in on the nature of Hamas and the White House's recognition of Israel's right to retaliate. We hear how Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu informed the US of his intention to strike, and today appears bent on continuing with the Trump-brokered ceasefire. The Haredi community in Israel is planning a massive protest at the entrance of Jerusalem tomorrow, while the High Court is hearing petitions that the IDF draft tens of thousands of ultra-Orthodox young men, and at the same time, the Knesset is working to draft a bill that will allow most of the Haredi young men to continue to avoid conscription. We learn some details of the leaked bill being discussed by the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee and hear about some of the Likud MKs who are speaking out against it.
