Skating Across America for Sobriety and Purpose In this week's Team Never Quit episode, Marcus and Melanie are joined by the incredible Chad Caruso — a skateboarder, YouTuber, and Guinness World Record holder who skated 3,000 miles across America in just 57 days, from Venice Beach, CA to Virginia Beach, VA. Chad didn't just break records — he used this cross-country journey to raise money for Natural High, a nonprofit youth drug prevention program, and to share his powerful story of overcoming addiction and injury. Skateboarding became more than a passion — it became a lifeline, helping Chad find sobriety, resilience, and purpose. In this episode Chad shares about: •His record-setting skate across the U.S. •What pushed him to keep going — physically, mentally, and emotionally •How skateboarding saved his life •His work raising awareness for addiction and mental health •The creation of his book, “Pushing Through America” •What's next in his mission to inspire and uplift others Chad's journey is one of grit, growth, and giving back. Whether you're a skater, in recovery, or just need a push to chase your own goals — this episode is for you. Follow Chad on Instagram: @chad_caruso Check out his book: Pushing Through America In This Episode You Will Hear: • I've been skateboarding for a little over 25 years. That's really all I've devoted my life to. (3:19) • I definitely recommend finishing school. (5:36) • It doesn't happen overnight. You go to a party here, a party there. Then you're 26, 28. The habit thing. I didn't want to be a part of the system. I was just all about rebelling. (7:40) • That was the real turning point [when facing jail time] I had to look around and say “Alright, what are you doin?” (10:02) • [I got into the Guinness Book of World Records] It was this year. (13:30) • It's nice to get the pat on the back, but ultimately, it was about much more than that. It was about giving up the drinking, focusing on something positive. I did the Skate Across America to raise money for charity. (13:40) • When you're at the start line it's all fun. Everyone's there filming, talking, it's exciting. Then you push off, and then a couple of miles in, you're like “Oh, I'm gonna be doing this for the next 2 months. (18:32) • [I completed the entire distance with] 1 board; I didn't change the wheels or the bearings, or anything. (23:56) • Even if it's way slower than you normally go, if you keep treading that ground, you're gonna make it there. (28:55) • I figured out that if I skate head-on to trucks, like tractor trailers; they're coming at me at 70 mph. If I made myself seen, I could take over the whole lane. So, I would basically play chicken with them, and wave them out of the way. (30:14) • [At the finish] The mayor put his hand up for a high five. I skated right past him, I didn't even notice. (35:23) • “If you keep pushing, you're gonna get there.” (36:17) • When you're out there alone for so many hours, all the noise of society and people's opinions kinda fades away. (36:26) • When you're left to yourself, you realize how simple life is. (36:35) • Quitting drinking and focusing on my hobby turned my life around. (41:34) • Whatever you're most interested in or gets you excited – just pursue that. (41:52) • If I can help to make this life a little bit better, that's a win. Above Photograph © Claudio Edinger When it comes to photography, Claudio Edinger has a Midas touch. Equally celebrated for his immersive photo series, the intimacy of his portraits, and his aerial views that conjure a sense of the eternal through selective focus, his compulsion for research drives adjustments to his photographic strategy from one project to the next. In today's show, we unpack the many facets of Claudio's storied career, from his arrival in New York and early documentation of Brooklyn's Hasidic community in the late 1970s to the environmental portraits he made inside Manhattan's infamous Chelsea Hotel, and beyond.  Learn the backstory to his fortuitous connection with master portraitist Philippe Halsman, and the influence this had on his photographic vocabulary. We also discuss Claudio's aerial imagery made from helicopters and drones, and debate the slippery slope between noteworthy content, image quality, and resolution. As a longtime disciple of meditation, Claudio's approach to photography is equally influenced by the underlying flow of energy essential to life on this planet, which led him to state, “I'm open to whatever the universe brings my way. But the universe has to conspire in your favor. My whole life has been like that. I've been guided. My intuition brings me to places, and the place drags me into it.” Guest: Claudio Edinger Episode Timeline: 3:03: Claudio's beginnings in photography while studying economics in Sao Paulo, and his first exhibit at the Sao Paulo Museum of Art. 4:55: A move to New York in 1976 and a two-year project on Brooklyn's Hasidic community. 8:42: Connecting with master portrait photographer Philippe Halsman, and how this expanded Claudio's vocabulary as a photographer. 15:35: A move to the Chelsea Hotel and a new photographic strategy to make environmental portraits of the building and its residents. 19:52: The influence of August Sander's work, and Claudio's pursuit of intimacy to create images with universal meaning. 25:22: The organic path of Claudio's photographic approach, and how he developed his selective focus technique.  28:15: Episode Break 29:06: The predictable visual effect of a Hasselblad's square frame, combined with a tripod and flash for portraits of patients in a Brazilian insane asylum. 33:06: Using the same techniques to capture the insanity inside an institution, as well as to photograph the institutionalized insanity of Brazilian Carnival.  37:51: Claudio's assignment work, plus his time as a New York paparazzo and the lessons this taught him.  39:28: Claudio's experience as a war photographer in El Salvador, and the urgency of living connected to war.  43:42: Shifting to a 4x5 Toyo camera to further explore the tilt-shift look of selective focus.   48:57: The shortcomings of large format that forced Claudio to shift to digital and then discover aerial photography.   54:17: Comparing aerial photos from a helicopter with those made from a drone, plus Claudio's thoughts on viewing the world from the point of view of eternity. Guest Bio: Claudio Edinger is one of Brazil's preeminent photographers. After studying economics at Mackenzie University in São Paulo in the early 70s, he turned his attention to photography, and he hasn't stopped since.  Edinger moved to New York City in 1976, and during the 20 years he spent in the US, he completed immersive photo essays about the Hasidic community of Brooklyn, the denizens of Manhattan's Chelsea Hotel, and habitués of LA's Venice Beach. He also freelanced for Brazilian and North American publications such as Veja, Time, Life, Rolling Stone, and The New York Times Magazine, among many others.  The author of more than twenty books, Edinger's photographs have been collected worldwide and exhibited by institutions such as New York's International Center of Photography, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Maison Europeénne de la Photographie in Paris, and the São Paulo Museum of Art, to name but a few. Edinger has received many honors for his work, including the Ernst Haas Award, the Hasselblad Award, the Higashikawa Award, and the Leica Medal of Excellence, which he received twice.  Always seeking new approaches to his work, Edinger has explored a wide range of camera formats and photographic techniques over the course of his career. In 2000, he began working with a large format camera, using selective focus to approximate human vision, and in 2015, he started an exploration of aerial photography—a theme that continues to this day. Years ago, I was on the Elite 11 quarterback camp tour and kept hearing coaches talking about QBs having the “It Factor.” It was as though everywhere I turned that phrase was being thrown around. As time would pass, it felt as though that became the most overused and undefinable phrase in football. So in the summer of 2016, a few of us set out to truly understand what it meant to have the It Factor and I would direct the film titled The It Factory. We canvassed the nation, asking premiere coaches, players and broadcasters to share their explanation of that phrase. It was fascinating as the nuances behind that phrase were so unique. The conclusion: those that have the It Factor walk into a room and people feel their presence…AND they make everyone in that room better.Dillon Gabriel is exactly that.He joined the Y-Option podcast over the weekend in our Venice Beach studio where he reflected on his record breaking year in Eugene, the impact of the Oregon staff, how he is preparing to actualize a childhood dream, his parents impact on him, and yes, to discuss his It Factor. He also accepted one of our final 4 season-ending awards in collaboration with our founding partner 76, as we named Dillon “My 5-Star QB” of the Year. The authentic nature of Dillon's personality is infectious, as I've seen him in rooms full of high school quarterbacks, in the Oregon football facility, around Heisman winners or literally in my kitchen with my family. I'd go as far to say that his It Factor is the most impressive my eyes have ever seen in 25 years around major college football. And yes, I know what I'm saying when I write that.Dillon Gabriel is a special talent and the NFL franchise that he lands at in late April will have a dynamic leader in their QB room. How do you define the It Factor? Who has it? Can you cultivate it?I'd love to hear your opinions in the comments at Y-Option.com or on social media as we truly enter the offseason in the sport we love.Much love and stay steady,YogiThis episode is executive produced by Jim Thornby and edited by Victor RenThis podcast is a Best Coast Media productionY-Option: College Football with Yogi Roth is a reader-supported publication. Welcome back to The Video Store Podcast. This week, I've curated a lineup of films that capture different aspects of Los Angeles: its humor, its struggles, its danger, and its intrigue. Whether you're a longtime fan of these movies or discovering them for the first time, I think they're worth your time. Here's what we're watching this week:L.A. Story (1991)Steve Martin stars in and wrote this quirky romantic comedy that doubles as a love letter to Los Angeles. It's full of surreal humor, like talking freeway signs, and it pokes fun at the city's obsession with image and trends. But it's also heartfelt, exploring how we connect with others in a place that can feel isolating. Keep an eye out for some great cameos, including Patrick Stewart as a hilariously serious maître d'. The film was shot all around L.A., including Griffith Park and Venice Beach, which really adds to its sense of place.Born in East L.A. (1987)Cheech Marin wrote, directed, and stars in this comedy about a Mexican-American man who gets mistakenly deported to Mexico. It's packed with laughs, but it also has a lot of heart as it explores cultural misunderstandings. Make sure to check out Paul Rodriguez and Daniel Stern both have memorable roles here, adding to the film's charm. To Live and Die in L.A. (1985)If you're into crime thrillers, this one's a must. Directed by William Friedkin (The Exorcist, The French Connection), it's a gritty and intense look at the darker side of Los Angeles. The film follows a Secret Service agent, played by William Petersen, as he becomes obsessed with catching a counterfeiter (Willem Dafoe). Friedkin's commitment to authenticity shows, especially in the car chases, which are some of the best ever put on film. The movie also features an amazing soundtrack by Wang Chung, which perfectly complements its tense, stylish vibe.L.A. Confidential (1997)Curtis Hanson's neo-noir is a masterpiece. Set in the 1950s, it dives into corruption, scandal, and ambition within the LAPD. The ensemble cast, including Kevin Spacey, Guy Pearce, Kim Basinger, and Russell Crowe, delivers some of their best work. Basinger even won an Oscar for her performance. The screenplay, co-written by Hanson and Brian Helgeland, is a brilliant adaptation of James Ellroy's novel. The production design and costumes perfectly recreate the glamour and grit of post-war Los Angeles, making it as visually striking as it is narratively gripping. That's the lineup for this week. Each of these films captures something unique about Los Angeles, from its humor and charm to its danger and complexity. If you decide to check out any of these, let me know what you think. Thanks for stopping by The Video Store Podcast, and we'll see you next time with more movies to add to your watchlist. This is a public episode. Have you listened to the FULL EPISODE yet?"Everything you are working and striving for, you already have. That so often we're working, sweating, clinging, grasping, striving to feel worthy enough. And the fundamental good news, what's called the gospel, is the announcement that you're loved exactly as you are." - Rob BellSpiritual teacher Rob Bell unveils a profound truth about the human struggle for worthiness, challenging our deeply ingrained beliefs about achievement and acceptance. Through his candid reflections, he reveals his own battle with the relentless inner voice that whispers "push, push, push," and "it's not enough," while sharing how he's learned to embrace the radical notion that we're already complete. In this episode, I'm joined by Lindsey Wilson, founder of OWL Venice, the wellness brand that transformed the way we think about bone broth and gut health. Back when bone broth wasn't a household staple, Lindsey was leading the way, crafting her signature broths and introducing people to the healing principles of Ayurveda. If you've ever wondered what makes OWL Venice's products so unique—or why bone broth has become a wellness must-have—you're in for an insightful conversation. We explore the current gut health epidemic and why so many people are struggling with digestive issues today. Lindsey explains the differences between broths, stocks, and powdered varieties you see on shelves, sharing practical tips to make the best choices for your health. She also sheds light on why juice cleanses might not be the answer and how OWL's Reset program provides a sustainable approach to healing and rejuvenation. Beyond that, we tackle important topics like the wellness trends Lindsey disagrees with, how to embrace intuitive eating as a beginner, and the habits that keep her grounded as a busy entrepreneur and mother. Lindsey also reflects on how the Venice community influenced OWL's mission and her personal evolution in the wellness space. Key Topics Covered: The benefits of bone broth and what makes OWL Venice unique Understanding gut health and common misconceptions The difference between broths, stocks, and powdered options Why OWL's Reset program stands out as a holistic approach to wellness Intuitive eating tips for beginners Lindsey's personal wellness rituals and family practices How Venice shaped OWL's mission and vision Resources:   Follow the host, Claudia, on Instagram and check out her website

In this episode of Girl, You So Random, I had the pleasure of talking with Comedian, D'Marie born and raised in LA. She's a standup comedienne whose style of comedy is observational and definitely her own! She's performed at Hollywood Improv, Ice-House Comedy Club, Pioneer Dancer Awards (honoring the legendary “Original Lockers” Dance Group, presented by The Dancer Jo Foundation), and more! Studying under the “Comedy Teacher's Teacher,” Greg Dean, as well as the comedic legend and “King of Venice Beach,” Michael Colyar, D'Marie's act can range from her family, to her relationship and slight addiction to Randy's Doughnuts, all the way to exploring why men over 75 always seem to approach her - don't ask. She may be considered a millennial, but she's got a soul of gold which allows her to reach audiences both young and old. She believes that her stage presence, honesty, transparency, and desire to have and bring fun onstage are what truly stands out in her act.   IG/TT: @TearItUpDee   FB: @dmarie.marie.129 Vocals by: Dian Sentino @belifuna Follow me on IG @drhollysfunny

The Surfer’s Journal presents Soundings with Jamie Brisick

Matt Warshaw grew up surfing in Los Angeles at a time when surf and skate culture were beginning to meet in Venice Beach and Santa Monica. After a stint as a pro surfer in the 1980s, Warshaw became the editor of Surfer magazine. In 1990, he left his editor's post at Surfer to attend UC Berkeley, where he got his BA in History in 1993. He remained in the Bay Area, parking himself in an apartment in the Sunset District and in countless Ocean Beach barrels. As if personally expanded by all those tubes, Warshaw's writing expanded into lengthy essays, profiles, and books—many books—among them Maverick's: The Story of Big-Wave Surfing, Above The Roar: 50 Surfer Interviews, Photo/Stoner, Surfriders: In Search of the Perfect Wave, Surf Movie Tonite! Surf Movie Poster Art, 1957-2005, and more. His Encyclopedia of Surfing, first released in 2003, is the most comprehensive tome of surf culture in existence, and he followed it up with 2010's The History of Surfing, a beast of a book that makes music of Warshaw's encyclopedic knowledge. His most recent venture is the EOS dot surf, which is an invaluable online resource for surf obsessives, and features the “Sunday Joint,” a reflective op-ed style email that Matt shoots out to subscribers every Sunday. In this episode of Soundings, Warshaw talks with Jamie Brisick about the golden days of Los Angeles, establishing a career as a historian, the value of exploring someone else's world, the importance of preserving history, the challenge of creating a database, his first Jeff Ho board, the Encyclopedia of Surfing, and the art of writing economically.

This conversation bridges the gap between cutting-edge biological research and ancient wisdom about the body-spirit connection, offering a fresh perspective on how our physical structure influences our ability to manifest, heal, and evolve. The discussion challenges conventional beliefs about the brain's role in our body's intelligence and introduces a new paradigm where fascia serves as the primary communication network. All to showcase just what vaginas can do. It's my assertion that the NORMAL healthy baseline for EVERY vagina is to be able to have multiple orgasms on demand, ejaculate across the room, have a ravenous libido, shoot ping pong balls and lift household furniture. Yes. This is NORMAL. EVERY vagina can. In this episode: Eliminating 20 years of urinary incontinence in one week Why are 60% of American women incontinent? Why Kegels DON'T work and what does Why are so many women deathly afraid of trampolines? Numb vagina = low libido Vaginal orgasms come easily with a strong vagina Powerful vaginas ejaculate across the room The number one physical reason for lack of lubrication Every woman can shoot vaginal ping pong balls. It picks up directly where the first volume left off in Venice Beach, California.” We discuss how the book came to be, who the characters are, and what we can expect from this creative team in the coming months. Dreams of Consciousness

Dreams of Consciousness Podcast Episode 343 features an interview with Shaun Ross of Excel. A product of the same Venice Beach punk and skateboarding community that produced Suicidal Tendencies, Excel were mainstays of the Eighties crossover/thrash scene. They went on hiatus after their third album Seeking Refuge, becoming another casualty of a shifting music industry that kept metal at arm's length. The band re-emerged in 2014 to play some reunion shows, and their first two albums were re-issued by Southern Lord Records shortly after. I spoke with bassist Shaun Ross about how doom metal pioneers Trouble influenced his music, and his intentions to keep Excel relevant to the current day. We also discussed why Seeking Refuge is considered a "lost" album, and what the next Excel album might sound like. My thanks again to Shaun for speaking with me, and to you for listening. In this episode, we dive deep into the life and legacy of Jim Morrison, exploring his extraordinary connection to the Western esoteric tradition and how it shaped his artistic journey.  As we dissect the prevailing narratives surrounding Jim Morrison, we emphasize the need to view him through a lens that transcends Hollywood's portrayals. Re-examining the common misconceptions about him reveals a man deeply rooted in intellectualism and spiritual inquiry. We discuss the concept of the "worm's eye view" versus the "bird's eye view," illustrating how a broader perspective can illuminate the complexities of Morrison's character beyond the myths created by the music industry and film representations. Central to our exploration is Morrison's inherent role as a secret teacher, someone compelled to awaken others to higher realities. The conversation highlights Morrison's spiritual struggles, particularly in the context of his upbringing and familial expectations, emphasizing how these conflicts fueled his artistic ambition. We juxtapose this with Morrison's inclination to challenge societal norms, drawing parallels to figures throughout history who sought to transcend their own limitations and awaken others. Throughout our dialogue, we touch upon the powerful symbolism inherent in Morrison's music and poetry, examining how his works serve as catalysts for awakening and self-discovery. His connection to artists like Nietzsche and Colin Wilson becomes apparent, illustrating a shared vision of consciousness expansion through art. The discussion also delves into Morrison's experiences while living in Venice Beach, where his explorations led him to artistic freedom and an expanded understanding of existence. Of course, we also reflect on Morrison's untimely death at 27 and the unanswered questions surrounding it, questioning the potential paths he could have pursued had he lived longer. Here, we consider the broader implications of his legacy—what it means in today's context of spiritual awakening amidst societal pressures. Ultimately, the episode encapsulates the timeless lessons from Jim Morrison's life and work: the importance of seeking authentic self-expression, the courage to confront societal norms, and the ceaseless pursuit of spiritual truth in a world filled with distractions.
