In this episode, Tate chats with Marcus Nuccio and Evan Weiss, the driving forces behind the band, Pet Symmetry, about their latest album Big Symmetry, released on May 2. Since August 2023, the record label, Storm Chaser, has been releasing one album every month, but Big Symmetry stands out as the label's most significant release yet. Marcus and Evan discuss the power of self-releasing music, as owning their own label allows them to make all the decisions and maintain complete control over their music. They also reflect on the incredible freedom this gives them, from writing and recording to collaborating with friends in the industry, such as Mike from Asian Man Records, who contributed to this release. The duo opens up about the unique writing process for Big Symmetry, which took place in a cabin in Southern Illinois. Over the course of just seven days, the band wrote 17 songs and immediately tracked the drums, marking a departure from their usual, more spread-out approach to songwriting. Lyrically, the band challenged themselves to write 12 love songs, a task that proved difficult for some members, but ultimately resulted in a more refined, confident sound. Marcus and Evan also discuss the evolution of their music, explaining how the process and the music itself reflect their growth as musicians since they first started playing together in 2012. With Pet Symmetry marking their fourth LP, the band finds themselves at a point where they can confidently call themselves veterans in the indie music scene. Their newfound confidence, along with their years of experience, has led to a tight, like-minded group of musicians who know exactly what they want out of their music careers. The episode offers an inside look at the band's journey, their creative process, and how their decisions along the way has allowed them to achieve everything they ever wanted in music. Whether you're a fan of the band or new to their music, this conversation provides valuable insights into the world of independent music and the freedom that comes with owning your art.

Synopsis - Dany Schifter Punk Rock (Episode 43) In this episode of Dany Schifter Punk Rock, we dive into the raw energy and rebellious spirit of punk. We kick off with Patti Smith Group's "Revenge", a poetic yet powerful track that blends introspection with punk defiance. Then, we amp up the energy with SNFU's "The King Of Skin", a fast-paced, sarcastic anthem from the Canadian hardcore scene. Discount's "History Is History" follows, delivering a melodic yet thought-provoking take on the weight of the past. We also explore the legendary Stooges, the band that ignited the punk movement with Iggy Pop's primal energy and genre-defining sound. To close, we review "Plea For Peace, Punk Rock Music CD" (Asian Man Records), a powerful compilation featuring Alkaline Trio and The Bouncing Souls, proving that punk remains a tool for resistance and change. Punk is not dead. It's alive, loud, and still shaking the system! #DanySchifterPunkRock #PunkRock #PattiSmith #SNFU #Discount #TheStooges #HardcorePunk #PleaForPeace #AsianManRecords #PunkSpirit #DIY #StayRebellious #PunkNeverDies

Mike Park is a musician, activist, and record label operator. He runs the legendary ska/punk label, Asian Man Records. I'm not fluent in the entirety of Asian Man's catalog, but Mike Park has put out some of my favorite albums, period. He's also one of the best examples out there of what it really means to be DIY and do things on your own terms. It's been an inspiration to me for, literally, most of my life at this point.

Mike Park is the only person behind Asian Man records. The label has helped break ska and punk bands including Alkaline Trio and Less Than Jake. Park recently turned down an offer to have Asian Man Records be bought out by a larger label for $3 million. He'll instead continue running it out of his mom's garage, like he has been for nearly 30 years. KEXP's Dusty Henry spoke with Park to learn more about the label's history, the ethos that's kept it alive and the bands it's worked with along the way. Scowl is one of a handful of new hardcore bands blowing up at the moment. And, more importantly, they are a band with ska roots. Specifically, their bassist Bailey Lupo, who used to play bass in San Jose ska-punk band The Caps (or CAPS). So, we brought them on to get all the deets on their ska past. Bailey told us about packing records at Asian Man Records as a teen. (They begged Mike Park to release the Scowl record in 2020, but he passed). Bailey talked about recently meeting JER in Gainsville and vowed to our audience that, one day, Scowl would collaborate with Skatune Network. And they talked about the bands that influenced The Caps: The Specials, Choking Victim and a whole slew of surf bands. But we got even deeper and talked about the late 2000s/early 2010s San Jose punk scene they came from and talked about legendary groups like Leer, Hard Girls (featuring Jeff Rosenstock's guitarist Mike Huguenor), Monstrauss (Who played ska & grunge ie Skunge), Matsuri, Stickup Kid and Point of View. And of course, we had to talk about San Jose's weirdest punk venue, Nickel City. Hyper Ska artist Eichlers wrote a song about the venue on their sophomore record. We also talk about touring with Limp Bizkit, what it was like to have thousands of kids show up to their Real Bay Shit shows, seeing Laura Stevenson at a backyard BBQ in San Jose, and we discuss the horrible Punknews comments they sifted through every day. Most importantly, we talked about Adam and Aaron's old band, Gnarboots! Support the show
In the early 2000s, Jamie Stewart wanted to go to Vietnam. They brought a rubber baby doll with them to take photos while they were there. One of those photos became the cover for Xiu Xiu's excellent A Promise album. But, for this trip to happen in the first place, Jamie needed to raise some money. For 8 months before they left, they recorded as many punk and ska bands as they could (One of the bands was Short Round). This isn't the only time that Jamie has intersected with ska. Another band they recorded, Firme, lent them their horn section for the Knife Play record. One of their old 90s bands, IBOPA (Indestructible Beat Of Palo Alto), played with a lot of ska bands since they were a fun horn-driven band (Ska was an influence, but not a style they played). Another one of their bands, Ten In The Swear Jar, released a record on Asian Man Records, and Pitchfork made a point to talk about ska in the review, despite there being NO ska on the album. We talk about all of this with Jamie, and so much more. We discuss the time period when they worked at Streetlight Records, how they discovered ska and reggae on KPFK on Sundays, how their 2nd concert ever was Pato Banton and Tippa Irie, and how they briefly played bass in a dub band. They also tell us about the time GG Allin jumped on stage and demanded they "plays some blues." They tell us stories about The Cactus Club. They tell us why Deerhoof is an amazing band. We learn who Richard Snakedick is. We discuss what it was like to perform a balloon solo as the opening act on AJJ's 2021 tour, and we find out why they once blurted out "Fred Flintstone's Lucius Dick." Plus, Jamie sings for us a Weird Al-style parody song they wrote when they were a teenager. Just imagine The Grand Illusion by Styx, but it's The Grand Fart! Support the show
Buffalo New York ska band The Abruptors formed in 2015 and came out the gate playing 2 Tone and trad ska grooves. They looked around and didn't see very many new ska bands in their region playing a similar style of the genre. That didn't bother them. They just did their thing. However, Mike Park noticed and immediately forged a relationship with them. They released their latest record, Noticeably Cheerless, on Asian Man Records on Feb 24. Today we talk with Abruptors members Mike Geraci and Toni LaMantia about their great new "upbeat bummer" record and get a sense of what the ska scene has been like in Buffalo. They had just opened for Sublime with Rome days before we recorded this interview! We also talk about their cover of Brian Fallon's "Forget Me Not" (His retweet of song was apparently his first--of many--tweets about ska), their friendship with Greg Soden (Host of Unscripted Moments: A Podcast About Propagandhi), how Chicago ska band Deal's Gone Bad completely influenced them and why the British ska band Hotknives are so awesome (and so underrated!) We also talk about the band's cool fashion sense, how shitty vinyl turnarounds pushed their album release back several times, and we dive head first into the group's history with wild stories about disgruntled former band members. Folk-punk duo AJJ was playing Mama Buzz Cafe in Oakland when they were approached by a guy named Skylar Suorez who was angling for some free records. Skylar told the Phoenix group that he worked at Asian Man Records. The group was excited at the prospect of being on the same label that released groups like Ten In The Swear Jar, Shinobu and copious ska albums. Shortly after, Asian Man signed them. On this episode, we bring on Sean and Ben from AJJ and dissect their ska roots. Ben is a much bigger fan of the genre and even played some ska in an early band called Free Delivery. While Sean admits he clowned on ska in high school (The entire golf team at his school listened to Christian ska!). However, we find out that he sang lead vocals on the ska song "ABCs" (with Mike Park and Jeff Rosenstock). He also performed at an "In Defense of Ska" event at Sojo's Donuts in Mesa, Arizona, and told the audience he was "ska-adjacent." On today's episode, we talk about all of Ben's favorite 90s and 2 Tone ska bands, how AJJ and Blue Meanies are similar, which ska bands AJJ has played with, and which grocery store in Tulsa, Oklahoma, AJJ once did a show at. We also talk about AJJ's AV Club Undercover show where they mashed up songs by Talking Heads, Neil Young, Wheatus and more. We discuss Mike Park telling the group that they were too big for Asian Man--but no other label was interested in them, and we talk at length about Jamie Stewart of Xiu Xiu, who opened for AJJ last year. And we beg him to be a guest on the podcast. The ChurchGear PodcastAre you a church tech director? In this episode we sit with Mike Park (@mikeparkmusic on Twitter) of Asian Man Records for a chat on mental health and we discuss a few tracks from his latest album with The Bruce Lee Band, "One Step Forward, Two Steps Back" www.asianmanrecords.com
During Skankin' Pickle's run, Mike Park had so many songs, he tapped Less Than Jake to record an album with him. He called it The Bruce Lee Band. This record was released in 1995. A decade later, The Bruce Lee Band returned with Beautiful World, this time backed by RX Bandits. But then, nearly a decade later, The Bruce Lee Band became a solid group with Mike Park, Jeff Rosenstock, Dan Potthast and Kevin Higuchi (Though Mike Huguenor was involved in the two 2014 records). They've put out several releases. Last year they released the excellent EP Division in the Heartland. And on May 27th, they will release their full-length, One Step Forward. Two Steps Back--incredible, passionate and at times angry ska-punk. On today's episode, we talk with two members of The Bruce Lee Band: Mike Park and Jeff Rosenstock. We discuss the two's origin story--Jeff's old band Arrogant Sons of Bitches tried to play at an event Mike threw at the Oakland A's parking lot, but Mike said no. We talk about the role Chris Candy played in the two becoming friends. And we talk about the mid-to-late-2000s era at Asian Man Records, where Mike had a vibrant selection of amazing punk bands like Bomb The Music Industry, AJJ, Lemuria and Shinobu. We also discuss how drummer Kevin Higuchi went from San Jose bar band drummer to joining The Bruce Lee Band and Jeff Rosenstock's band, Mike Park smoking weed with Alkaline Trio, and the infamous Skankin' Pickle reunion shows in Japan. And of course, we dig deep into The Bruce Lee Band's excellent catalog. Support the show

Mike Park has been running Asian Man Records out of his mom's garage for over two decades with a refreshing approach that might seem unusual by today's standards: there's no advances and every release is a handshake agreement. “I do this for the love of music,” writes Park on the label's About page. “Not for capitalist gain or status recognition. I try my best to do the right things ethically and to believe in helping others instead of striving for profit over people.” Somehow its worked, with Asian Man amassing a small, but powerful catalog/community of underground music comprised of seminal third-wave ska, early Alkaline Trio records, Jeff Rosenstock, Joyce Manor, AJJ and many others. On this episode, Saxon decided to hide the crystal ball, puts away systematic analysis, and erase the galaxy brain chalk board to talk with Park about the very real highs and lows of being an indie label head on the fringes of the music industry. Along the way, the two discuss format changes, early 2K sellout culture, the role of a small label in today's ecosystem, and lament briefly about the disappearance of Myspace. Last year, singer/songwriter Brian Fallon tweeted that Slackers lead singer Vic Ruggiero is "one of the greatest songwriters and lyricists of our time." This isn't the only time that Brian tweeted about his love for ska during the pandemic. We've seen him praise Mike Park, Catbite and express his love for New York band The Abruptors' ska cover of his song "Forget Me Not." On today's episode of In Defense of Ska, we dig into Brian's past and learn about how he discovered ska, why Asian Man Records mail order was so important to him as a young music fan, and we discuss the details of his cover of Spring Heeled Jack's "Pop Song (Green)." He also tells us about seeing Laurel Aitken at Wetlands, and we find out which Slackers song Brian would cover if he was going to play one on tour. We also get the full story behind a tweet Brian sent last year about getting a surprise phone call from Bruce Springsteen and then spilling cat food everywhere during the call. One of the best things about ska is that it's such a flexible genre. You can mix it with soul music, black metal, or anything in-between. There have even been different artists that have mixed electronic music with ska over the years, but now Eichlers is taking the weirdo, Avante-Garde-meets-pop sensibilities of Hyperpop and using that as a foundation for what he's calling "Hyperska." What does hyperska (or even Hyperpop for that matter) sound like? You're going to have to listen to our interview with the subgenre's innovator to find out. We talk to Russ Wood (aka Eichlers) about his influences, which includes 100 gecs, Joan of Arc, El Ten Eleven, Johnny Foreigner, The Matches, Slapstick, Spraynard, Vantana Row, and much more. We also learn about his time in the San Jose punk scene (The same scene that Adam and Aaron used to be part of with their band Gnarboots). Russ also apologizes to Mike Park for being a picky eater while he was interning at Asian Man Records, and Adam spits a killer Boboso verse about toast. Be sure to check out Eichlers new record on Bad Time Records. It features guest appearances by Skatune Network, Tape Girl, Boboso, and even our own beloved co-host, Adam Davis.Check out Hey Coffee at heycoffeeco.com and get fresh, sustainably sourced coffee mailed to your door. For over a quarter-century, Mike Park has been releasing iconic punk, ska and more through his DIY record label Asian Man. Along with Mike's own various music projects, Asian Man helped introduce now long-tenured bands with cult followings (Alkaline Trio, Less Than Jake) to a worldwide audience, and his activism led to large tours like Ska Against Racism and Plea For Peace, aimed at educating ska and punk's growing audiences about humanitarian causes and the contributions that people of color have made to those genres. Today, Mike shares how his love for ska first blossomed, his favorite album artwork over Asian Man's history, continuing to be inspired by the 924 Gilman community, and why he's told some bands to simply avoid record labels altogether.
