10 years ago, Mother Jones investigator Shane Bauer went undercover at a private prison in Louisiana. Disguised as a prison guard, he observed the violence and neglect at Winn Correctional Center in Winnfield, Louisiana. His report drew the attention of many, including President Obama, who stated the government would discontinue sending federal inmates to private prison, which was ultimately unfulfilled when President Trump took office.10 years later, Winn is still operating. Now it serves as a processing and detention facility for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Bauer spoke with Louisiana Considered's Alana Schreiber about how he's reflected on the ten years since his investigation, and the state of the private prison industry today. The Lafon Performing Arts Center in Luling, Louisiana has built a one-of-kind program that seeks to increase arts education among students in rural areas. The Artsperience program offers kids opportunities to develop their skills in performing, visual and technical arts, while also receiving mentorship from professional artists.  The arts center also brings incredible performances, including Broadway tours, to local audiences. Lafon Arts Center executive director Ned Moore joins us with more on the importance of artistic educational opportunities. __Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Sara Henegan. Composer Katherine Bergman, one of the group's co-founders and artistic director, previously played with Wolf in a saxophone quartet.Minnesota Winds performs at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis on May 30 at 7 p.m.Ross says: What I think is really special about this is it creates that professional level experience for young students who are playing an instrument for amateur adults like myself to hear the highest level of performance on in a band concert.— Ross WolfPlein air myths and legendsFrancesca Bernardi of Minneapolis is manager at Groveland Gallery. There are lots of ways to get to know someone you like, lots of ways to date. What if your outing consisted of you painting pictures together with your friend, partner, perhaps prospective spouse? Call it a paint date. The Davis Arts Center offers a Paint Date workshop as one of its events this spring, on May 16. It's a clever idea for getting people to think about taking up a paint brush in front of an easel, plus there's a social side. What do people paint, when they have an hour to paint something, in the presence of a friend? Are there any stories here? Today on Davisville we talk with the Paint Date instructor, Roshelle Carlson, sometimes known as Miss Rainbow, and Sam King, executive director of the arts center. We'll also hear about what else the center is doing this spring, and how it's doing in this, its 67th year. King says they've come back strong from the pandemic, and she explains how they did it. Or maybe even earlier. “We’re ahead of schedule and under budget,” said City Manager Chuck Warbington. Brickwork is already going up, and the weather’s been a surprising ally—minimal rain, no freezing temps. The hotel will feature 120 rooms, meeting spaces, a chef-driven restaurant (Bellfire), and a bar (Old Nick’s). Plus, 200 new parking spots in the city-owned deck below. This project’s been a decade in the making, delayed by COVID and financing hurdles. But now, Lawrenceville’s vision of a walkable, thriving downtown is finally within reach. STORY 2: Lawrenceville resident kicks off new year by winning $1 million in the Georgia Lottery Three Georgians are starting 2026 a whole lot richer—millionaires, in fact. Among them? A lucky winner from Lawrenceville, along with two others from College Park and Grovetown. Their $1 million prizes came from the Georgia Lottery’s second-chance Georgia Millionaire drawing, announced right as the clock struck midnight on New Year’s. Talk about a way to ring in the new year. The Georgia Millionaire scratcher offers $10,000 instant prizes and a shot at the big one through second-chance entries. STORY 3: The Latest: US strikes Venezuela, captures Maduro and his wife The United States launched a military operation early Saturday, capturing Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, in a move that’s already shaking the world. By morning, he was aboard a U.S. warship, blindfolded and bound for New York to face drug trafficking charges. President Trump, speaking on Fox News, called the operation “genius” and confirmed the U.S. would oversee Venezuela’s next steps. “We’ll be involved very much,” he said. The fallout was immediate. Venezuela’s U.N. ambassador condemned the strike as a “colonial war,” while China and Russia slammed the U.S. for violating international law. Meanwhile, in South Florida, Venezuelan exiles celebrated, waving flags and chanting “Liberty!” Maduro’s capture marks a dramatic escalation in U.S.-Venezuela tensions. Trump dismissed criticism over bypassing Congress, calling his opponents “weak” and insisting the operation was necessary. “The tyrant is gone,” said Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: Ingles Markets STORY 4: ART BEAT: Beat those January blues with exciting Gwinnett arts events Feeling the post-holiday slump? The decorations are packed away, the parties are over, and—ugh—football season’s almost done. So now what? Here’s an idea: throw on that big coat, brave the chill, and dive into Gwinnett’s arts scene. Plays, concerts, art classes—there’s plenty to shake off the winter blahs. On Jan. 11, the Gwinnett Symphony Orchestra and Youth Orchestra team up for a concert at Discovery Theatre in Lawrenceville. Mozart, Strauss, and even Anderson’s quirky “The Typewriter” are on the program. Tickets? Head to www.tix.com. Prefer visual art? The Hudgens Center in Duluth has three exhibits running through January, including “Sketching with Buck,” a stunning collection of hand-drawn architectural sketches from around the world. Or maybe you’re itching to create? The Suwanee Arts Center offers classes like “Watercolor Landscapes” (Jan. 7 and 14) and “Drawing Basics” starting Jan. 17. Winter doesn’t stand a chance. STORY 5: Meet the first babies born in 2026 at hospitals in Gwinnett New Year’s Eve is exciting enough—countdowns, confetti, champagne. But imagine if Jan. 1 was also your birthday. That’s exactly the case for a few lucky babies born in Gwinnett hospitals as the calendar flipped to 2026. At 12:44 a.m., Julian Alessandro Sanchez made his debut at Northside Hospital Gwinnett in Lawrenceville, becoming their first baby of the year. Over at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Braselton, Brittany and Ryan Hopper of Hoschton welcomed twin boys—Koen Anthony at 4:58 a.m. and Kaden Michael at 5:14 a.m. The Hopper family even received a gift basket from the hospital’s Auxiliary and Safe Kids program. We’ll be right back. Break 3: EAGLE THEATRE Gentleman’s Guide STORY 6: Gwinnett police offering free women's basic self-defense course The Gwinnett County Police Department is hosting a self-defense program for women 16 and up, and honestly, it’s something every woman should consider. The Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) course isn’t just about learning moves—it’s about building confidence, awareness, and practical skills to stay safe. Over four sessions (Jan. 20, 22, 27, and 29, from 6–9 p.m.), participants will dive into risk awareness, avoidance strategies, and hands-on defense techniques. It wraps up with a live simulation—because practice makes perfect, right? Held at the Gwinnett Police Training Center in Lawrenceville, spots fill fast. Don’t wait. Call 678.442.6520 or visit GwinnettCounty.com/RAD to register. STORY 7: Norcross Grad Mason Kaplan Earns NCAA Elite Scholar-Athlete Award Norcross alum Mason Kaplan just added another impressive accolade to his already stacked resume. On Saturday, the Illinois State linebacker snagged the NCAA FCS Football Elite Scholar-Athlete Award—one of the most prestigious academic honors in college football. Here’s the deal: this award isn’t just about being good on the field. It’s for the student-athlete with the highest GPA at the finals site of an NCAA championship. And Kaplan? He’s rocking a 4.0 in grad school, studying the psychology of sport and physical activity. Oh, and he’s also president of ISU’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. What’s wild? Kaplan started his college career as a quarterback, playing two seasons at Valparaiso and one at Illinois State before an injury sidelined him in 2024. This year, though, he’s made a seamless (and dominant) transition to linebacker, helping lead the Redbirds to Monday’s FCS National Championship in Nashville. We’ll have closing comments after this Break 4: GCPL Passport Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today’s Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Get More LVWITHLOVE Content at LVwithLOVE.com Become a partner! Families and young people are the future of the arts, and no one knows that better than Mark Fitzgerald Wilson, Executive Director of the Zoellner Arts Center at Lehigh University. Mark joined Zoellner in 2020, bringing an eclectic background as an educator, business professional, and opera singer. Originally from Iowa, he discovered the Lehigh Valley through his son's lacrosse tournaments and fell in love with the area's energy, trails, and sense of community. When he arrived at Zoellner, he noticed a missing piece in local arts programming: family experiences that were fun, welcoming, and accessible. The result was Family FUN-A-PALOOZA, an annual event that brings families together for live theater, interactive arts activities, and partnerships with local organizations. This year's Family FUN-A-PALOOZA takes place Saturday, November 1 from 10 AM to 1:30 PM, featuring Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! The Musical, based on the beloved children's book by Mo Willems. Developed by the Kennedy Center, the show promises laughter, energy, and plenty of opportunities for kids to move and make noise. “This is a non-shushing show,” Wilson says. “Kids, have fun. Parents tell us that when they hear that, the weight just lifts off their shoulders. This is for everyone. We have families with neurodivergent children, sensory-friendly audiences, and people who just want to enjoy being here together.” The event features more than 20 community and campus partners, including PBS, Lehigh University Art Galleries, and local dance groups. Visitors can take part in crafts, art projects, and pre-show performances throughout Zoellner's lobby and open spaces. Costumes are encouraged, even for parents. “It's the day after Halloween, so bring your costumes,” Wilson laughs. “Dress up, have fun, and parents, wear a costume too.” Beyond Family FUN-A-PALOOZA, Zoellner's fall and spring lineup is packed with major performances and new experiences. Wilson highlights Postmodern Jukebox, Dirty Dancing in Concert, and the Morgan Freeman Symphonic Blues Experience, along with orchestral performances from the New York Philharmonic and Philadelphia Orchestra. “We want to bring world-class artists to our stage while also connecting students to the professional world,” Wilson says. “There are so many great arts organizations in the Lehigh Valley, and each of us brings something different. For Zoellner, it's about giving people cultural experiences they might not get anywhere else.” He also points to Zoellner's new well-being concert series, which lets audiences lie onstage among musicians for a meditative, health-focused experience. “The arts are part of the ecosystem that keeps our community healthy,” Wilson explains. “Music and movement make people feel better. Across the country, doctors are prescribing the arts as part of someone's physical or mental health. That's where we're headed too.” Wilson says innovation will define the next phase of Zoellner's growth. Expect site-specific performances, partnerships with local nonprofits for community ticket programs, and more creative collaborations that bring people together in unexpected spaces. “People want experiences, not just events,” Wilson says. “Some want to sit in Baker Hall, some want to see a show outside, and some might even want to see something in a parking garage. The arts can meet people wherever they are.” Family FUN-A-PALOOZA 2025 takes place Saturday, November 1 from 10 AM to 1:30 PM at the Zoellner Arts Center on the campus of Lehigh University. Simon1025GDP Script/ Top Stories for August 26th Publish Date: August 26th PRE-ROLL: From The BG AD Group Studio, Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Tuesday, August 26th and Happy Birthday to Melissa McCarthy I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are your top stories presented by KIA Mall of Georgia Duluth's Notre Dame Academy celebrates two decades of 'seeing every student' Former Kennedy Center manager returns to Gwinnett to lead Lawrenceville Arts Center Dick Goodman remembered for support of libraries, Suwanee community All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! Break 1: Kia MOG (07.14.22 KIA MOG) STORY 1: Duluth's Notre Dame Academy celebrates two decades of 'seeing every student' For nearly 20 years, Julie Derucki has started her mornings the same way: a long commute, a quiet walk through the halls flipping on lights, and then, at 7:50 a.m., she’s at the front door, greeting every single student with warmth and intention. Rain, shine, freezing cold—it doesn’t matter. It’s her thing. Notre Dame Academy, a Marist Catholic school in Duluth, has spent 20 years building more than just academics. It’s a community—a village, really—where students are seen, known, and loved. Teacher Regan Jolley-Sherman felt it the moment she interviewed. From international potlucks to family picnics, Notre Dame celebrates its people. And while academics matter, Derucki’s focus is clear: raising empathetic, grounded leaders. STORY 2: Former Kennedy Center manager returns to Gwinnett to lead Lawrenceville Arts Center Daniela Esteves is coming back to Gwinnett, and this time, she’s taking the reins as complex general manager of the Lawrenceville Arts Center. Most recently with the Kennedy Center in D.C., Esteves has done it all—programming, marketing, event management, you name it. She even spent a couple of years at Gas South District in Duluth before heading north. Lawrenceville’s Arts Center isn’t just a venue—it’s a hub for connection and culture. And with Esteves at the helm, it’s poised to thrive. STORY 3: Dick Goodman remembered for support of libraries, Suwanee community Dick Goodman wore many hats in his 83 years—city councilman, PR pro, photographer, library advocate, and the first chair of Suwanee’s Public Art Commission. But more than titles, he was a storyteller, a community builder, and a man who poured his heart into everything he touched. Goodman passed away last week, leaving behind a legacy that’s woven into the fabric of Suwanee. After moving to Suwanee in 2006, it didn’t take long for him to dive in. By 2009, he was on the City Council, later chairing the Gwinnett Library Board for eight years. Today, a room at the Suwanee library bears his name—a fitting tribute for someone who championed the power of stories. Even in his final hours, Goodman was at a Suwanee planning meeting, still giving back. His family is now raising funds to make the “Novel Idea” sculpture—a granite bench shaped like books—a permanent part of the library he loved so much. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: MONSTER JAM STORY 4: Pirates of Lanier Charity Poker Run set for September For over a decade, the Pirates of Lanier Charity Poker Run has been a highlight for boaters on Lake Lanier, and this year, it’s getting a shake-up. Zach Martin, a longtime participant, is stepping in as the 2025 organizer, and he’s bringing back the big powerboats. This year’s event, running Sept. 12-13, will benefit K9s for Warriors and the Foster Care Support Foundation—causes close to Martin’s heart. The weekend will feature everything from a helicopter photoshoot to raft-ups at Cocktail Cove, with nightly stops at Margaritaville and Lanier Islands Resort. For details, visit www.lanierislands.com. STORY 5: Discount retailer Burlington opening store in Lawrenceville Lawrenceville’s about to get a new spot for bargain hunters—Burlington is opening a store at the Shoppes at Creekside, right off State Route 316 at 860 Duluth Highway. The grand opening? Sometime this fall. Burlington’s pitch? Big brands, small prices—up to 60% less than other retailers. Clothes, shoes, home decor, beauty products, baby gear, even pet toys—it’s all there. And the new store will feature their updated layout with bold signs and organized aisles, making it easier to snag those deals. This will be Burlington’s 38th Georgia location and sixth in Gwinnett. They’re hiring now—apply at BurlingtonStores.jobs. We’ll be right back. Break: MONSTER JAM STORY 6: ART BEAT: Artist-photographer Debra Barnhart launches new Instagram site filled with wildlife Rudyard Kipling once called Yellowstone “a howling wilderness… full of unimaginable freaks of fiery nature.” Debra Barnhart? She saw it differently. Her February trip with National Geographic wasn’t easy. Snow, ice, and heavy camera gear tested her resolve. The result? Stunning wildlife photos—bison dusted in snow, a white owl, and more. Her new Instagram, Debra Barnhart Nature Photography, showcases it all. STORY 7: Georgia Bulldogs Readying for Saturday's Season Opener The Georgia Bulldogs are easing into the 2025 season, but don’t let that fool you—things are about to get intense. First up? Marshall this Saturday at Sanford Stadium. Then it’s straight into the SEC gauntlet: Tennessee, Alabama, Kentucky, Auburn, Ole Miss. Buckle up. On offense, it’s a new era. Gunner Stockton, the Rabun County legend, finally gets his shot after Carson Beck’s transfer. Stockton? He’s ready—quiet confidence, big arm, and a fresh set of weapons, including USC transfer Zachariah Branch and Illinois’ Josh McCray. Defense? Still Georgia’s pride. Sure, they’ve got holes to fill—NFL-sized ones—but returners like C.J. Allen and Daylen Everette are stepping up. Tackling? A work in progress, Smart admits. New faces, new challenges, same Georgia standard. Let’s see how it plays out. We’ll have closing comments after this.
