Simon1025GDP Script/ Top Stories for August 26th Publish Date: August 26th PRE-ROLL: From The BG AD Group Studio, Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Tuesday, August 26th and Happy Birthday to Melissa McCarthy I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are your top stories presented by KIA Mall of Georgia Duluth's Notre Dame Academy celebrates two decades of 'seeing every student' Former Kennedy Center manager returns to Gwinnett to lead Lawrenceville Arts Center Dick Goodman remembered for support of libraries, Suwanee community All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! Break 1: Kia MOG (07.14.22 KIA MOG) STORY 1: Duluth's Notre Dame Academy celebrates two decades of 'seeing every student' For nearly 20 years, Julie Derucki has started her mornings the same way: a long commute, a quiet walk through the halls flipping on lights, and then, at 7:50 a.m., she’s at the front door, greeting every single student with warmth and intention. Rain, shine, freezing cold—it doesn’t matter. It’s her thing. Notre Dame Academy, a Marist Catholic school in Duluth, has spent 20 years building more than just academics. It’s a community—a village, really—where students are seen, known, and loved. Teacher Regan Jolley-Sherman felt it the moment she interviewed. From international potlucks to family picnics, Notre Dame celebrates its people. And while academics matter, Derucki’s focus is clear: raising empathetic, grounded leaders. STORY 2: Former Kennedy Center manager returns to Gwinnett to lead Lawrenceville Arts Center Daniela Esteves is coming back to Gwinnett, and this time, she’s taking the reins as complex general manager of the Lawrenceville Arts Center. Most recently with the Kennedy Center in D.C., Esteves has done it all—programming, marketing, event management, you name it. She even spent a couple of years at Gas South District in Duluth before heading north. Lawrenceville’s Arts Center isn’t just a venue—it’s a hub for connection and culture. And with Esteves at the helm, it’s poised to thrive. STORY 3: Dick Goodman remembered for support of libraries, Suwanee community Dick Goodman wore many hats in his 83 years—city councilman, PR pro, photographer, library advocate, and the first chair of Suwanee’s Public Art Commission. But more than titles, he was a storyteller, a community builder, and a man who poured his heart into everything he touched. Goodman passed away last week, leaving behind a legacy that’s woven into the fabric of Suwanee. After moving to Suwanee in 2006, it didn’t take long for him to dive in. By 2009, he was on the City Council, later chairing the Gwinnett Library Board for eight years. Today, a room at the Suwanee library bears his name—a fitting tribute for someone who championed the power of stories. Even in his final hours, Goodman was at a Suwanee planning meeting, still giving back. His family is now raising funds to make the “Novel Idea” sculpture—a granite bench shaped like books—a permanent part of the library he loved so much. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: MONSTER JAM STORY 4: Pirates of Lanier Charity Poker Run set for September For over a decade, the Pirates of Lanier Charity Poker Run has been a highlight for boaters on Lake Lanier, and this year, it’s getting a shake-up. Zach Martin, a longtime participant, is stepping in as the 2025 organizer, and he’s bringing back the big powerboats. This year’s event, running Sept. 12-13, will benefit K9s for Warriors and the Foster Care Support Foundation—causes close to Martin’s heart. The weekend will feature everything from a helicopter photoshoot to raft-ups at Cocktail Cove, with nightly stops at Margaritaville and Lanier Islands Resort. For details, visit www.lanierislands.com. STORY 5: Discount retailer Burlington opening store in Lawrenceville Lawrenceville’s about to get a new spot for bargain hunters—Burlington is opening a store at the Shoppes at Creekside, right off State Route 316 at 860 Duluth Highway. The grand opening? Sometime this fall. Burlington’s pitch? Big brands, small prices—up to 60% less than other retailers. Clothes, shoes, home decor, beauty products, baby gear, even pet toys—it’s all there. And the new store will feature their updated layout with bold signs and organized aisles, making it easier to snag those deals. This will be Burlington’s 38th Georgia location and sixth in Gwinnett. They’re hiring now—apply at BurlingtonStores.jobs. We’ll be right back. Break: MONSTER JAM STORY 6: ART BEAT: Artist-photographer Debra Barnhart launches new Instagram site filled with wildlife Rudyard Kipling once called Yellowstone “a howling wilderness… full of unimaginable freaks of fiery nature.” Debra Barnhart? She saw it differently. Her February trip with National Geographic wasn’t easy. Snow, ice, and heavy camera gear tested her resolve. The result? Stunning wildlife photos—bison dusted in snow, a white owl, and more. Her new Instagram, Debra Barnhart Nature Photography, showcases it all. STORY 7: Georgia Bulldogs Readying for Saturday's Season Opener The Georgia Bulldogs are easing into the 2025 season, but don’t let that fool you—things are about to get intense. First up? Marshall this Saturday at Sanford Stadium. Then it’s straight into the SEC gauntlet: Tennessee, Alabama, Kentucky, Auburn, Ole Miss. Buckle up. On offense, it’s a new era. Gunner Stockton, the Rabun County legend, finally gets his shot after Carson Beck’s transfer. Stockton? He’s ready—quiet confidence, big arm, and a fresh set of weapons, including USC transfer Zachariah Branch and Illinois’ Josh McCray. Defense? Still Georgia’s pride. Sure, they’ve got holes to fill—NFL-sized ones—but returners like C.J. Allen and Daylen Everette are stepping up. Tackling? A work in progress, Smart admits. New faces, new challenges, same Georgia standard. Let’s see how it plays out. We’ll have closing comments after this. About Tere Derbez Tere Derbez was born in Mexico City, has her art studio at San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, and Scottsdale, Arizona; since she was a child, she has showed her love for painting. As a teenager she began her studies at the Institute of Fine Arts of San Luis Potosí, where she cultivated a deep friendship with teacher Raúl Gamboa, a contemporary of Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, and Rufino Tamayo, and from whom she learned the basics of drawing and the secrets of painting, and whom Tere Derbez considers her mentor. However, her interest in painting and writing never ceases. Since 1995, she has dedicated her full time to her passion; painting and writing, always looking for new forms and techniques of expression. Her painting style leads towards surrealism, having Remedios Varo and Leonora Carrington as role models. She describes herself as a passionate woman who loves all her experiences, recognizing that in the face of people, essentially in their eyes, their soul is reflected. She believes that at this time Mexico needs a new stream of artists that need support to be able to dedicate themselves fully to the creation of their works. As a writer, she writes weekly in two newspapers in Mexico: El Sol de San Luis y Del Bajio, and monthly in Hominis Magazine. She has written two books of poems, and the novel «El Ángel de Sofía». She also has a foundation called «El Ángel de Sofía», which is focused on helping young people and adults from marginalized areas, to help to realize their dreams of life by promoting education, art and sports. The foundation puts special attention on the area of mental health. The show is presented by the Athens Area Council for the Arts and runs from March 24 to May 30, 2025. If you live anywhere near East Tennessee, then make the trip to Athens to check out Wayne's work. Now that Kevin has the Leica M2 he's wanted for so long, it didn't take long for him to think about adding a 35mm lens to his kit. Actually, he already has a Leica 35mm lens, but it is a screwmount Elmar f3.5. Can it be used with a Leica M camera? The answer is "yes," if you have a LTM to M mount adapter. Leica made them back in the day, and now they are made cheaply in China. But just how compatible are they. Find out in the show. it's spring, and that means time for some de-cluttering. So, Kevin is giving away a camera! It's a fully functional Minolta Maxxum XTsi with a Minolta AF 35-70mm f4 zoom lens. It's the camera Kevin used for color photography on his Alaskan cruise last September, and now it can be yours. You can enter by email at unclejonesyscameras@gmail.com. Once agaiin our listeners chime in with some great email. We'd love to hear from you, too. Happy Photography! Wayne's photography can be seen at The Arts Center in Athens, Tennessee through May 30, 2025. Connect with Sandra Wasko-FloodSandra Wasko-Flood is an artist, poet, teacher and founder of the national non-profit organization: Living Labyrinths for Peace. Elizabeth Bishop is responsible for the publishing of this, her first book of art and poetry.Wasko-Flood received a BA from UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) in English, and a Standard Secondary Teaching Credential from California State College, Los Angeles. After teaching Junior High School for three years, she became disappointed with the school system, and became a full time artist. She chose artistic luminaries with whom to study wherever she lived: at UCLA, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, University of Wisconsin, Madison, Smithsonian Institution Washington DC, and UNM Taos.Specializing in printmaking and art/technology labyrinths, as director of the printmaking center at the Lee Arts Center in Arlington, VA, she invited Keith Howard to teach his new safe etching methods there. She then taught Safe Etching as well as Monotype printmaking, one of the first to update this form of one copy prints, at her home studio in Alexandria, VA.An ardent feminist since college days, she was a founding member of the Washington Women's Arts Center, the Washington Printmakers Gallery, the International Labyrinth Society and the founder of the Women's Art Spirit group (discusses art and spirituality), and Living Labyrinths for Peace. She discovered labyrinths from a seminal experience in the Great Kiva Civic/Ceremonial Center in Chaco Nature National Historical Park, NM, in which she saw figures of all races and cultures ascending an underground spiral, to do a Dance of Peace on the Kiva floor, and ascend a spiral to the skies. Afterwards, she went straight to a book store and found newly published book on labyrinths. She knew a labyrinth belonged in that kiva. Returning to her Washington DC studio, she was inspired to create “Dance of the Labyrinth:” computer programmed light box image faces of people and animals (Life), mummies (Death) and icons (Spirits) that lit up to your steps.Due to an invitation from the Washington Performing Arts Society, (WPAS), based at the Kennedy Center, she conducted her “Labyrinths for Creativity and Peace” workshops in local schools. Inspired to change the school system, she related the labyrinth to all subjects or intelligences. In her soon to be published book—“The Labyrinth Instructors Handbook,” she will receive contributions from teachers in every field. This teaching experience led her to co-directing the Labyrinth Society's first project: “Labyrinths for Peace: 2000,” a labyrinth demonstration for inner peace on the East Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. Shortly afterwards, she founded Living Labyrinths for Peace (LL4P). This national organization, has the mission to inspire healing and transformation within and among people through labyrinth creation and education. Its goal is to establish a permanent LL4P center based on her vision in Chaco's Great Kiva to unite peoples of all cultures, races and beliefs. You are invited to view her art and LL4P websites:www.waskoart.comwww.livinglabyrinthsforpeace.orgContact Sandrawaskoart@gmail.comConnect with Host Terry LohrbeerIf you are a Boomer and feel you would make a great guest please email Terry with your bio and any other info you would like to share at: terry@kickassboomers.comConnect with Host Terry LohrbeerFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2658545911065461/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/terrylohrbeer/Instagram: kickassboomersTwitter: @kickassboomersWebsite: kickassboomers.comTerry's editing company:Connect to Premiere Podcast Pros for podcast editing:premierepodcastpros@gmail.com LEAVE A REVIEW and join me on my journey to become and stay a Kickass Boomer!Visit http://kickassboomers.com/ to listen to the previous episodes. The project aims to support the Cherokee County Justice Center's needs, including indigent defense and accountability courts. Renovations will include new lighting, HVAC, and updated interiors, with the former sanctuary space used for meetings and court graduations. Funded by the American Rescue Plan Act and local sales tax, the project is estimated at $5.7 million, with completion expected by early 2026. STORY 2: Raffensperger signs off on presidential election results Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger certified the presidential election results, confirming Donald Trump's victory over Kamala Harris in the state. This followed a hand count of over 700,000 ballots, which showed minor discrepancies but no changes to the outcome. Trump gained 11 votes, while Harris lost six compared to the machine count. Raffensperger declared it the most secure election in Georgia's history. With certification complete, Georgia's electors will meet on December 17 to finalize the results for Congress, where Trump secured 312 electoral votes, surpassing the 270 needed for the presidency.
